a 911 call from his son. they found the body of the 70-year-old inside the front room of the house with injuries that the police say could be characterized as signs of trauma. >> i really, really love this town. i think it's a very special place. >> reporter: fisk's death comes less than two months after he defeated the city's incumbent mayor in a landslide. as word of fisk's death spread on monday, so did rumors that he may have been assaulted. >> juneau is a small town. it's about 33,000 people here. and there are no roads in or out of the city. when gossip starts spreading, it's easy for things to spread quickly. >> reporter: bob king was a long-time friend and neighbor of the mayor. >> there was a recent murder here in town that had people on edge. when you have an unattended death like this people do get nervous and the like.

juneau police called the assault claims speculation and said an autopsy would be performed to determine the cause of death. they also tell cbs news there was no forced entry, no gunshot wound, no suspicion of suicide, and nothing to indicate drugs or drug use were involved. >> i do think it's unlikely, however, that foul play was involved just because he was a very popular guy. he was an outgoing person. the fact that he won an election by such a wide margin. and was discovered by his son ian, who was checking on his father after the mayor missed several meetings on monday. in a statement ian thanked the juneau community for its support and also denied suggestions of foul play, saying, "at this time we have no reason to speculate as to the cause of his death and are awaiting the results of his

in america. >> right here. >> boom, boom, boom, boom. >> upwards of 14 people that are dead. >> shots ring out at a social services facility in san bernardino. >> these guys are still at large. you know that, right? >> a manhunt is under way. >> this is crazy. there's just too many shootings. >> there are steps we can take to make americans safer. >> announcer: this is the "cbs overnight news." this is a special expanded western edition. two suspects in the massacre in san bernardino today were hunted down and killed by the police, about a mile away from the crime scene. three gunmen dressed in military gear burst into a state social services building and opened fire, shooting more than 30 people. 17 others were wounded. 10 of them are in critical

the sound of the shootout with the suspects was captured on a police scanner. >> get that and north of -- [ gunshots ]. >> just for the update, we have the suspect vehicle stopped. we'll go ahead and extract it. we can stand by, wait for the bearcat. >> copy. >> right now we have one down outside the car, one down inside the car. well, we don't know. hold on. from what we understand, one's on the run. >> all we have is a citizen that saw that guy running. we've got definitely one guy in the vehicle and one in the street. >> we're going to wait for the bearcat, move up and check on these bodies inside the car. >> have that bearcat come straight eastbound so we can move up from the rear. >> the takedown of the suspects this evening. a police officer was wounded but his injuries are not life-threatening. carter evans is in san bernardino for us.

>> reporter: i am at the scene of the first shooting, scott, at the inland regional center, but there is a second scene, and that's where that suv was confronted. inside two armed gunmen. well, perhaps i should correct myself. one of them was a woman. so both of those suspects were killed. possibly a third spokt is still on the loose. now, police do say they have another suspect in custody right now, but it is unclear if that person is connected to the crime. all of this today occurring, all of this occurring today with little warning, with actually no warning, and authorities say the suspects were armed and prepared for battle. police say the masked gunmen were wearing body armor when they entered the building just after 11:00 a.m. and started shooting. >> i turned on from -- walking outside and pa, pa, pa. and she was playing and all of a sudden boom.

then they said they're on the loose. >> i was right behind the building. and i heard all the shots. >> multiple shots. shots going off like crazy. just one right after the other. and as i came out, we had seen a black suv flying down the street. >> reporter: terry petit got a text from his daughter inside. >> shooting at my work. people shot. in the office waiting for cops. pray for us. i am locked in my office. that's it. >> reporter: what did your wife see? >> the guy outside dressed all in black with a big gun just shooting at the window. >> reporter: luis gutierrez spoke with his wife on the phone while she was trapped inside. >> reporter: what's your take on all this, man? this is your wife. >> this is my life, man.

i'll do anything to protect her. she helps her kids with autism. i don't know why anyone would do anything right there. but -- >> reporter: at least 18 people injured in the shooting were sent to area hospitals while police set up a triage area on the street. >> most of the people that were wounded, most of the victims were all centrally located in one area of the facility. >> reporter: jarrod burguan is chief of the san bernardino police department. >> they came prepared to do what they did as if they were on a mission. >> reporter: the fbi and atf were called in and police are still looking for the suspects who fled the scene in a dark-colored suv. debbie alvarado rushed to find her daughter michelle, who'd been shot. >> i called her, she texted me and she said -- she was cold. she was shot in her side. and that they were -- they were pretending to be dead. >> reporter: hundreds of people were evacuated. a total of 670 work inside. bowdich. >> is this a terrorist incident? i will tell you right now we

incident. >> reporter: and we do not have a motive for this crime as well. but we do have some new information, scott. according to several law enforcement sources, syed farook, he's an inspector with the san bernardino health department, worked in the building where these shootings occurred. tonight, scott, he's being called a possible suspect. >> carter, thanks very much. and the suv of course was the scene of the shootout earlier. a short time ago san bernardino police and the fbi gave reporters the very latest information. >> good evening, folks. so this is the second official press conference that we'll do on this. i'm not going to go through all of the details that we went through in the first press conference. but i will say this. since that time we are still working on the building here at the inland regional center. as officers were searching the building we had mentioned in the first press conference that there were some suspicious devices. one of those devices is believed

so they're taking a very cautious, very slow approach to processing that building and rendering that safe. so i would imagine we're going to be here for several hours as the bomb squad continues to work that part. on the investigative side we have followed up on some tips. that took us to a residence in the city of redlands. when officers were setting up on that residence to watch it, there was a vehicle that was seen leaving that was suspected of possibly being involved. there ended up being a pursuit of that vehicle and eventually that pursuit came back to san bernardino avenue between mountain view and richardson here in the city of san bernardino where the suspect vehicle stopped and there was an officer-involved shooting. we had multiple officers that were involved in the shooting. we have two suspects that are dead at the scene. one is a male.

we had one police officer that was wounded. he has injuries that are not considered to be life-threatening. and he is at a local hospital and is expected to be okay. of the suspects that were -- that are dead at the scene one is a male, one is a female. they were dressed in kind of assault-style clothing, i think is probably the best way to term it. they are both armed with assault rifles. they are both armed with handguns. and there's also kind of some sensitive stuff around the vehicle. we're not real sure. we're taking a very cautious approach to dealing with the vehicle in case there is more explosives there. with that i'm going to turn it over to dave bowdich with the fbi to talk about some parts of the investigation. >> thank you, chief. so first off, my name is -- >> into the mikes, please. >> my name is david bowdich. assistant director in charge of the fbi -- >> the cbs overnight news will be right back.on americans are affected by mental illness. together we can help them with three simple words.

i know one of the big questions that will come up repeatedly is is this terrorism? and i am still not willing to say that we know that for sure. we are definitely making some movements that it is a possibility. we are making some adjustments to our investigation. it is a possibility. but we don't know that yet. and we're not willing to go down that road yet. >> david, the relationship between the two dead suspects? >> unknown at this point. >> how old approximately are they? >> i do not even know that. this is -- >> what about the third suspect? there was talk of a third suspect. >> there is a third suspect. and i don't know the disposition of that suspect. i woul defer that question to the chief. what i will tell you on any indications of terrorism are this investigation, and i told a few of you already, we will go where the evidence takes us. it's possible it goes down that road. it's also possible it does not.

and when we are fairly sure we will let you know. >> david, do you have a motive -- >> is this possibly terrorism? >> there are a number of potential -- there's a few potential things, but we just don't know. and i'm not willing to go down that road. this is a very fluid active investigation. we are still gathering facts. all the heads of agencies that we have here. we are still gathering some of these facts ourselves because this scene is strewn throughout the city and into another city. and it's incredibly fluid. and that's just the way these things -- we'll get there when we get there. >> any information about the identity of the third suspect, description, age, anything? >> i should have included that in my -- when i talked a moment ago. so as i said, we had an officer-involved shooting on san bernardino avenue between mountain view and richardson. there were two people in the vehicle. both of those people are deceased. there was a third person that was seen running away. we do not know if they were involved. we have that person detained.

certainly do not know if they were involved. it's possible that they were not. in addition to that and the reason we put things out on social media that we asked for people to shelter in place in those neighborhoods is because there were some folks that called in and had reported that they heard folks -- they heard somebody jumping fences and they reported some of that activity in the neighborhood. we don't know if that was possibly responding officers, but we took a cautious approach. we locked down the neighborhood. we asked people to shelter in place. and we searched that neighborhood extensively. as of a couple minutes ago we just got word that that search has been wrapped up, no additional folks have been contacted or seen there, so we feel that that area is safe and we can lift that shelter in place order there. >> do you have any information on why this location? >> we do not have a motive. >> approximate age of the suspects. >> we do not -- i do not have that right now. keep in mind that i said there were some things that were causing the officers to take a very, very cautious approach in approaching those suspects. so we just are not that far into

>> [ inaudible ]. >> i'm sorry? may have had suicide vests or something similar? >> i don't know. i have not heard suicide vest, no. >> do you believe this situation is all clear, that people are safe, or there are still more shooters potentially out there? >> we feel confident about the neighborhood where the officer-involved shooting took place that we have secured that and there's nobody outstanding there. reasonably confident on that. on the broader scale of the investigation, as i said, early on we had information there were potentially three shooters. we are still at a point where we are tracking down that information, we're going to try to continue to identify if there was a third person involved or potentially even more people that might have been involved in the planning but we're still pretty early on that part of the investigation. >> [ inaudible ]. >> -- holiday party -- >> i can't listen to all of them. >> there's a report out that at the holiday party somebody left angrily, went out, came back with two other people, guns, and started firing.

that they were in a meeting or holiday party type event at the inland regional center. somebody did leave, but we have no idea if that is the person that came back. >> so that's a possibility then? >> somebody did leave. there was some type of dispute or something when somebody left that party, but we have no idea if those are the people that came back. >> do you have any idea what kind of weapons were recovered at the site of the shootout. you said long guns initially. >> they were assault style weapons. yeah, that type of weapon, yes. >> are there explosives near that black suv currently? >> there was a report that they potentially threw what was identified as a pipe bomb. i think we've rendered that device safe. it was not an explosive. i think we're still working on the vehicle and making sure that that is safe. >> can you give us anything on description of these suspects, their appearance, ethnicity, anything, age? >> just the way it was described to me as -- and i said this in

they came dressed and equipped and i think the people we have at the scene that are deceased are dressed in that way. they're dressed in dark kind of tactical gear is the best way i'll put it. >> ethnicity, anything like that? >> i don't know. >> since you served the search warrant, is it your understanding -- >> i didn't say we served a search warrant. >> okay. we understand you served a search warrant, we're being told. so is it your understanding they were holed up in the general area then the whole time, they never left? >> no, no. there was information on the early part of the investigation as we started to develop information, there was one particular focus area. a couple. but one particular focus area we went to, and it was one of those follow-up focus areas that led to the house in redlands that led to the pursuit that led to the active shooting. >> did they live there? was that their house? >> the address was connected to i don't know who the suspects are, nor do i know if that is where they lived.

saying he is the third suspect that they have been searching for. president obama today was being interviewed by norah o'donnell of "cbs this morning" when he he got word of the shooting. >> mr. president, it appears there's been another mass shooting in california. what do you know? >> well, we don't know that much yet. it's still an active situation. fbi is on the ground offering assistance to local officials as they need it. it does appear that there are going to be some casualties. and you know, obviously our hearts go out to the victims and the families. the one thing we do know is that we have a pattern now of mass shootings in this country that has no parallel anywhere else in the world. and there are some steps we could take not to eliminate every one of these mass shootings but to improve the odds that they don't happen as

common sense gun safety laws, stronger background checks, and for those who are concerned about terrorism, some may be aware of the fact that we have a no-fly list where people can't get on planes with you those same people who we don't allow to fly can go into a store right now in the united states and buy a firearm and there's nothing that we can do to stop them. that's a law that needs to be changed. and so my hope is that we're able to contain this particular shooting, and we don't yet know what the motives of the shooters are but what we do know is there are steps we can take to make americans safer and that we should come together on a bipartisan basis at every level of government to make these rare

is sally abdelmageed, who works at the inland regional center, the building where the attack took place. she saw the attackers enter the building, and we spoke to her by phone. >> i heard shots fired, and it was from an automatic weapon. very unusual. why would we hear shots? as we look out the window, a second set of shots goes off, and it's pop, pop, pop, pop. and we saw a man fall to the floor. then we just look and we saw three men dressed in all black military attire with vests on, holding assault rifles. and they -- soon as they opened up the doors to building 3, and one of them opened up the door to building 3. he starts to shoot all over into

that's the room we typically have conferences and we just heard more gunshots go off. i got out my phone. i reached for my phone. i called 911. and i hid under my desk. i didn't see any more. i just heard more gunshots go off as i was talking to dispatch. we went into my manager's office, locked the door, barricaded it. we heard running and things happening upstairs. about 30 minutes later someone came to the door and knocked on the door but we didn't obviously answer and another 15 minutes later someone came and took us into a secure room. >> ms. abdelmageed, can you describe to me in as much detail as you can, what did the gunman look like? >> i couldn't see his face.

here's the latest on the mass shooting in san bernardino, california. two suspects are dead. one man, one woman. thth were killed in a shshtout wiwi police, who had chased down their suv, that vehicle in the middle of the shot there. a third person is in custody, though police say he may not be involved. one officer was lightly wounded. tonight police are searching a home in neighboring redlands, california and s srching the ininnd regional center, the site of the shooting, searching both of those places for bombs. the killers, dressed in military gear, shot more than 30 people. at least 14 are dead. 17 others are wounded. 10 of them critically. the attack happened during a holiday luncheon attended by workers from the county department of health. the motive is not knknn. rrorism has not beenenuled out.

jeff pegues is following the investigation. jeff? >> scott, some of the leads that investigators are getting to this point have come because of a name that surfaced really early on in the minutes after this shooting. law enforcement sources, multiple law enforcement sources confirm for cbs news that one of the possible suspects mentioned is syed farook. he worked for the department of health. again, this is a name that has been confirmed by multiple law enforcement sources as a shooting. information abououwhat was found in the vehicle. vehicle that was described as leaving the scene of the shooting. according to law enforcement sources, an ar-15 style rifle was found in that vehicle along with two pistols as well. investigators are right now trying to trace those weapons. in addition, as the vehicle was

of the first shooting, scott at the inland regional center, but there is a second scene, and that's where that suv was confroroed. inside two armed gunmen. well, perhaps i should correct myself. one of them was a woman. so both of those suspects were killed. possibly a third spokt is still on the loose. now, police do say they have another suspect in custody right now, but it is unclear if that person is connected to the crime. all off this today occurring, all of this occurring today with little warning, with actually no warning, and authorities say the suspects were armed and prepared for battle. police say the masked gunmen were wearing body armor when they entered the building just after 11:00 a.m. and started shooting. >> i turned on from -- walking outside and pa, pa, pa. and she was playing and all of a sudden boom. right here. then they said they're on the loose. >> i was right behind the building. and i heard all the shots.

shots going off like crazy. just one right after the other. and as i came out, we had seen a black suv flying down the street. >> reporter: terry petit got a textxtrom his daughter inside. >> shooting at my work. people shot. in the office waiting for cops. pray for us. i am locked in my office. that's it. >> reporter: what did your wife see? >> the guy outside dressed all in black with a big gun just shooting at the window. >> reporter: luis gutierrez spoke with his wife on the phone while she was trapped inside. >> reporter: what's your take on all this, man? this is your wife. >> this is my life, man. i'll do anything to protect her. she helps our kids with autism.

anything right there. but -- >> reporter: at least 18 people injured in the shooting were sent to area hospitals while police set up a triage area on the street. >> most of the people that were wounded, most of the victims were all centrally located in one area of the facility. >> reporter: jarrod burguan is chief of the san bernardino police department. >> they came to do what they did as if they were on a mission. >> reporter: the fbi and atf were called in and police are still looking for the suspects who fled the scene in a dark-colored suv. debbie alvarado rushed to find her daughter michelle, who'd been shot. >> i called her, she texted me and she said -- she was cold. she was shot in her side. and that they were -- they were pretending to be dead. >> reporter: hundreds of peoeoe were evacuated. a total of 670 work inside. assistant fbi director david bowdich. >> is this a terrorist incident? i will tell you right now we done know if this is a terrorist incident.

a motive for this crime as well. but we do have some new information, scott. according to several law enforcement sources, syed farook, he's an inspector with the san bernardino health department, worked in the building where these shootings occurred. tonight, scott, he's being called a possible suspect. >> carter, thanks very much. and the suv of course was the scene of the shootout earlier. a short time ago san bernardino police and the fbi gave reporters the very latest information. >> good evening, folks. so this is the second official press conference that we'll do on this. i'm not going to go through all of the details that we went conference. but i will say this. since that time we are still working on the building here at the inland regional center. as officers were searching thehe building we had menenoned in the first press conference that devices. one of those devices is believed

device. so they're taking a very cautious, very slow approach to processing that building and rendering that safe. so i would imagine we're going to be here for several hours a a the bomb scad continueseso work that part. on the investigative side we have followed up on some tips. that took us to a residence in the city of redlands. when officers were setting up on that residence to watch it, there was a vehicle that was seen leaving that was suspected of possibly being involved. there ended up being a pursuit of that vehicle a a eventually that pursuit came back to san bernardino avenue between mountain view and richardson here in the city of san bernardino where the suspect vehicle stopped and there was an officer officer-involved shooting. we had multiple officers that were involved in the shooting. we have two suspects that are dead at the scene. one is a male. one is a female. we had one police officer that wawawounded. he has injuries that are not

life-threatening. and he is at a local hospital and is expected to be okay. of the suspects that were -- that are dead at the scene one is a male, one is a female. they were dressed in kind of assault-style clothing, i think is probably the best way to term it. they are both armed with assault rifles. they are both arard with handguns. and there's also kind of some sensitive stuff around the vehicle. we're not real sure. we're taking a very cautious approach to dealing with the vehicle in case there is more explosives there. with that i'm going to turn it over to dave bowdich with the fbi to talk about some parts of f the e vestigation. >> thankyou, chief. so first off, my name is -- >> into the makesikes, please. >> my name is david bowdich. assistant director in charge of the fbi - [ vocalizing ]

i know one of the big questions that will come up repeatedly is is this terrorism? and i am still not willing to say that we know that for sure. we are definitely making some movements that it is a possibility. we are making some adjustments to our investigation. it is a possibility. but we don't know that yet. and we're not willing to go down that road yet. >> david, the relationship between the two dead suspects? >> unknown at this point. >> how old approximately are they? >> i do not even know that. this is -- >> what about the third suspect? there was talk of a third suspect. >> there is a third suspect. and i don't know the disposition of that suspect. i would defer that question to the chief. what i will tell you on any indications of terrorism are this investigation, and i told a few of you already, we will go where the evidence takes us. it's possible it goes down that road. it's also possible it does not.

and when we are fairly sure we will let you know. >> david, do you have a motive -- >> is this possibly terrorism? >> there are a number of potential -- there's a few potential things, but we just don't know. and i'm not willing to go down that road. this is a very fluid active investigation. we are still gathering facts. all the heads of agencies that we have here. we are still gathering some of these facts ourselves because this scene is strewn throughout the city and into another city. and it's incredibly fluid. and that's just the way these things -- we'll get there when we get there. >> any information about the identity of the third suspect, description, name, anything? >> i should have included that in my -- when i talked a moment ago. so as i said, we had an officer-involved shooting on san bernardino avenue between mountain view and richardson. there were two people in the vehicle. both of those people are deceased. there was a third person that was seen running away. we do not know if they were involved. we have that person detained. i don't have any information on

certainly do not know if they were involved. it's possible that they were not. in addition to that and the reason we put things out on social media that we asked for people to shelter in place in those neighborhoods is because there were some folks that called in and had reported that they heard folks -- they heard somebody jumping fences and they reported some of that activity in the neighborhood. we don't know if that was possibly responding officers, but we took a cautious approach. we locked down the neighborhood. we asked people to shelter in place. and we searched that neighborhood extensively. as of a couple minutes ago we just gotord that that search has been wrapped up, no additional folks have been contacted or seen there, so we feel that that area is safe and we@can lift that shelter in place order there. >> do you have any information on why this location? >> we do not have a motive. >> approximate age of the suspects. >> we done -- i do not have that right now. keep in mind that i said there were some things that were causininthe officers to takak a very, very cautious approach in approaching those suspects.

the investigation yet. >> [ inaudible ]. >> i'm sorry? >> possibility these suspects may have had suicide vests or something similar? >> i don't know. i have not heard suicide vest, no. >> do you believe thth situation is all clear, t tt people are safe, or thererere still more shooters potenenally out there? >> we feel confident about the neighborhood where the officer-involved shooting took place that we have secured that and there's nobody outstanding there. reasonably confident on that. on the broader scale of the investigation. as i said, early on we had information there were potentially three shooters. we are still at a point where we are tracking down thaha formation, we're goioi to try to continue to identify if there was a third person involved or potentially even more people that might have been involved in the planning but we're still pretty early on tha part of the investigation. >> -- holiday party -- >> i can't listen to all of them. >> there's a report out that at the holiday party somebody left angrily, went out, came back with two other people, guns, and started firing. any truth to that?

thatathey were in a meeting or holiday party type event at the inland regional center. somebody did leave, but we have no idea if that is the person that came back. >> so that's a possibility then? >> somebody did leave. there was some type of dispute or something when somebody left that party,y, but w whave no idea if those are the people that came back. >> do you have any idea -- you said long guns initially. >> they were assault style weapons. yeah, that type of weapon, yes. >> are there explosives near that black suv currently? >> there was a report that they potentially threw what was identified as a pipe bomb. i think we've rendered that device safe. it was not ann exexosive. i think we're still working on the vehicle and making sure that that is safe. >> can you give us anything on description of these suspects, their appearance, ethnicity, anything, age? >> just the way it was described to me as -- and i said this in the first press conference.

and i think the people we have at the scene that are deceased are dressss in that way. they're dressed in dark kindd of tactical gear. >> ethnicity, anylhing like that? >> i don't know. >> since you served the search warrant, is it your understanding -- >> i didn't say we served a search warrant. >> okay. we understand you served a search warrant, we're being told. so is it your understanding they were holed up in the general area then the whole time, they never left? >> no, . there e s information as part of the investigation as we started to develop information, there was one particular focus area. a couple. but one particular focus area it was one of those follow-up focus areas that led to the house in redlands that led to the pursuit that led to the active shooting. >> did they live there? was that their housus >> the address was connectct to the follow-up we had. i don't know who the suspects

here's the latest on the mass shooting in san bernardino, california. two suspects are dead. one man, one woman. they were killed in a shootout with police, who had chased down their suv, that vehicle in the middle of the shot there. a third person is in custody, though police say he may not be involved. one officer was lightht wounded. tonight polili are searching home in neighboring redlands, california and searching the inland regional center, the site of the shooting, searching both of those places for bombs. the killers, dressed in military gear, shot more than 30 people. at least 14 are dead. 17 others are wounded. 10 of them itically. the attack happened duringg a holiday luncheon attended by workers from the county bepartment of health. the motive is not known. terrorism has not been ruled out. homeland security correspondent jeff pegues is following the

>> scott, some of the leads that investigators are getting to this point have come because of a name that surfaced really early onn in the minutes after this shooting. law enforcement sources, multiple law enforcement sources confirm for cbs news that one of the possible suspects mentioned is syed farook. he worked for the department of health. again, this is a name that has been confirmed by multiple law enforcement sources as a possible suspect innhis shooting. also we're getting new information about what was found in the vehicle. remember, there was this black vehicle that was described as leaving the scene of the shooting. according to law enforcement sources, an ar-15 style rifle was found in that vehicle along with two pistols as well. investigatats are righthtow trying to trace those weapons. in addition, as the vehicle was fleeing, the suspects inside,

a 911 call from his son. they found the body of the 70-year-old inside the front room of the house with injuries that the police say could be characterized as signs of trauma. >> i really, really love this town. i think it's a very special place. >> reporter: fisk's death comes less than two months after he defeated the city's incumbent mayor in a landslide. as word of fisk's death spread on monday, so did rumors that he may have been assaulted. >> juneau is a small town. it's about 33,000 people here. and there are no roads in or out of the city. when gossip starts spreading, it's easy for things to spread quickly. >> reporter: bob king was a long-time friend and neighbor of the mayor. >> there was a recent murder here in town that had people on edge. when you have an unattended death like this people do get nervous and the like. and these questions come up.

juneau police called the assault claims speculation and said an autopsy would be performrm to determine the cause of death. they also tell cbs news there was no forced entry, no gunshot wound, no suspicion of suicide, and nothing to indicate drugs or drug use were involved. >> i do think it's unlikely, however, that foul play was involved just because he was a very popular guy. he was an outgoing person. the fact that he won an election by such a wide margin. and was discovered by his son ian, who was checking on his father after the mayor msed several meetings on monday. in a statement ian thanked the juneau community for its support and also denied suggestions of foul play, saying, "at this time we have no reason to speculate as to the cause of his death and are awaitingg the results of his autopsy."

>> reporter: i am at the scene of the first shooting, scott, at the inland regional center, but there is a second scene, and that's where that suv was confronted. inside two armed gunmen. well, perhaps i should correctct myself. one of them was a woman. so both of those suspects were killed. possibly a third spokt is still on the loose. now, police do say they have another suspect in custody right now, but it is unclear if that person is connected to the crime. all of this today occurring, all of this occurring today with little warning, with actually no warning, and authorities say the suspects were armed and prepared for battle. police say the masked gunmen were wearing body armor when they entered the building just after 11:00 a.m. and started shooting. >> i turned on from -- walking outside and pa, pa, pa. and she was playing and all of a sudden boom.

then they said they're on the loose. >> i was right behind the building. and i heard all the shots. >> multiple shots. shots going off like crazy. just one right after the other. and as i came out, we had seen a black suv flying down the street. >> reporter: terry petit got a text from his daughter inside. >> shooting at my work. people shot. in the office waiting for cops. pray for us. i am locked in my office. that's it. >> reporter: what did your wife see? >> the guy outside dressed all in black with a big gun just shooting at the window. >> reporter: luis gutierrez spoke with his wife on the phone while she was trapped inside. >> reporter: what's your take on all this, man? this is your wife. >> this is my life, man.

i'll do anything to protect her. she helps her kids with autism. i don't know why anyone would do anything right there. but -- >> reporter: at least 18 people injured in the shooting were sent to area hospitals while police set up a triage area on the ststet. >> most of the people that were wounded, most of the victims were all centrally located in one area of the facility. >> reporter: jarrod burguan is chief of the san bernardino police department. >> they came prepared to do what they did as if they were on a mission. were called in and police are still looking for the suspects who fled the scene in a dark-colored suv. debbie alvarado rushed to find r daughter michelle, who'd been shot. >> i called her, she texted me and she said -- she was cold. she was shot in her side. and that they were -- they were pretending to be dead. >> reporter: hundreds of people were evacuated. a total of 670 work inside. assistant fbi director david bowdich. >> is this a terrorist incident? i will tell you right now we done know if this is a terrorist

>> reporter: and we do not have a motive for this crime as well. but we do have some new information, scott. according to several law enforcement sources, syed farook, he's an inspector with the san bernardino health department, worked in the building where these shootings occurred. tonight, scott, he's being called a possible suspect. >> carter, thanks very much. and the suv of course was the a short time ago san bernardino police and the fbi gave reporters the very latest information. >> good evening, folks. so this is the second official press conference that we'll do on this. i'm not going to go through all of the details that we went through in the first press conference. but i will say this. since that time we are still working on the building here at the inland regional center. as officers were searching the building we had mentioned in the first press conference that there were some suspicious devices. one of those devices is believed

cautious, very slow approach to processing that building and rendering that safe.e. so i would imagine we're going to be here for several hours as the bomb squad continues to work that part. on the investigative side we have followed up on some tips. that took us to a residence in the city of redlands. when officers were setting up on that residence to watch it, there was a vehicle that was seen l lving that was suspected of possibly being involved. there ended up being a pursuit of that vehicle and eventually that pursuit came back to san bernardino avenue between mountain view and richardson here in the city of san bernardino where the suspect vehicle stopped and there was an officer-involved shooting. we had multiple officers that were involved in the shooting. we have two suspectstshat are dead at the scene. one is a male.

was wounded. he has injuries that are not considered to be life-threatening. and he is at a local hospital and is expected to be okay. of the suspects that were -- that are dead at the scene one is a male, one is a female. they were drsed in kind of assault-style clothing, i think is probably the best way to term it. they are both armed with assault rifles. they are both armed with handguns. and there's also kind of some sensitive stuff around the vehicle. we're not real sure. we're taking a very cautious approach to dealing with the vehicle in case there is more explosives there. with that i'm going to turn it over to dave bowdich with the fbi to talk about some parts of the investigation. >> thank you, chief. so first off, my name is -- >> into the mikes, please. >> my name is david bowdich. assistant director in charge of the fbi -- >> the cbs overnight news will be right back. almost sixty million americans are affected by mental illness. together we can help them with three simple words.

and when we are fairly sure we will let you know. >> david, do you have a motive -- >> is this possibly terrororm? there are a number of potential -- there's a few potential things, but we just don't know. and i'm not willing to go down that road. this is a very fluid active investigation. we are still gathering facts. all the heads of agencies that we have here. we are still gathering some of these facts ourselves because this scene is strewn throughout the city and into another city. and it's incredibly fluid. and that's just the way these things -- we'll get there when we get there. >> any information about the identity of the third suspect, description, age, anything? >> i should have included that in my -- when i talked a moment ago. so as i said, we had an officer-involved shooting on san bernardino avenue between mountain view and richardson. there were two people in the vehicle. both of those people are deceased. there was a ththd person that was seen running away. we do not t ow if they were involved. we have that person detained. i don't have any information on

were involved. not. in addition to that and the reason we put things out on social media that we asked for people to shelter in place in those neighborhoods is because there were some folks that called in and had reported that they heard folks -- they heard somebody jumping fences and they reported some of that activity in the neighborhood. we don't know if that was possibly responding officers, but we took a cautious approach. we locked down the neighborhood. we asked people to shelter in place. and we searched that neighborhood extensively. as of a couple minutes ago we just got word that that search has been wrapped up, no additional folks have been contacted or seen there, so we feel that that area is safe and we can lift that shelter in place order there. >> do you have any information on why this location? >> we do not have a motive. >> approximate age of the suspects. >> we do not -- i do not have that right now. keep in mind that i said there were some things that were causing the officers to take a very, very cautious approach in approaching those suspects. so we just are not that far into

>> [ inaudible ]. is that possible? >> i'm sorry? >> possibility these suspects may have had suicide vests or something similar? >> i don't know. i have not heard suicide vest, no. >> do you believe this situation is all clear, that people are safe, or there are still more shooters potentially out there? >> we feel confident about the neighborhood where the officer-involved shooting took place that we have secured that and there's nobody outstanding there. reasonably confident on that. ononhe broader scale of the investigation, as i said, early on we had information there were potentially three shooters. we are still at a point where we are tracking down that information, we're going to try to continue to identify if there was a third person involved or potentially even more people that might have been involved in the planning but we're still pretty early on that part of the investigation. >> [ inaudible ]. >> -- holiday party -- >> i can't listen to all of them. >> there's a report out that at ththholiday party somebody left angrily, went out, c ce back with two other people, guns, and any truth to that?

that they were in a meeting or holiday party type event at the inland regional center. somebody did leave, but we have no idea if that t the person that came back. >> so that's a possibility then? >> somebody did lelee. there was s me type of dispute or something when somebody left that party, but we have no idea if those are the people that came back. >> do you have any idea what kind of weapons were recovered at the site of the shootout. you said long guns initially. >> they were assault style weapons. yeah, that type of weapon, yes. >> are there explosives near that black suv currently? >> there was a report thatathey potentially threw what was identified as a pipe bomb. i think we've rendered that device safe. it was not an explosive. i think we're still working on the vehicle and making sure that that is safe. >> can you give us anything on description of these suspects, their appearance, ethnicity, anything, age? >> just the way it was described to me as -- and i said this in

that they have been searching for. president obama today was being interviewed by norah $% o'donnell of "cbs this morning" when he he got word of the shooting. >> mr. president, it appears there's been another mass shooting in california. what do you know? >> well, we don't know that much yet. it's still an active situation. fbi is on the grouou offering assistance to local offifials as they need it. it does appear that there are going to be some casualties. and you know, obviously our hearts go out to the victims and the families. the one thing we do know is that we have a pattern now of mass shootings in this country that has no parallel anywhere else in the world. and there are soso steps we could take not to eliminate every one of these mass shootings but to improve the odds that they don't happen as frequently.

stronger background checks, and for those who are concerned about terrorism, some may be aware of the fact that we have a no-fly list where people can't get on planes with you those same people who we don't allow to fly can go into a store right now in the united states and buy a firearm and there's nothing that we can do to stop them. that's a law that needs to be changed. and so my hope is that we're able to contntn this particular shooting, and we don't yet know what the motives of the shooters are but what we do know is there are steps we can take to make americans safer and that we should come together on a bipartisan basis at every level of government to m me these rare

is sally abdelmageed, who works at the inland regional center, the building where the attack took place. she saw the attackers enenr the building, and we spoke t ther by phone. >> i heard shots fired, and it was from an automatic weapon. very unusual. why would we hear shots? as we look out the window, a second set of shots goes off, and it's pop, pop, pop, pop. and we saw a man fall to the floor. then we just look and we saw three men dressed in all black military attire with vests on, holding assault rifles. and they -- soon as they opened up the doors to building 3, and one of them opened up the door to building 3. he starts to shoot all over into

that's the room we typically have conferences and we just heard more gunshots go off. i got out my phone. i reached for my phone. i called 911. and i hid under my desk. i didn't see any more. i just heard more gunshots go off as i was talking to dispatch. we went into my manager's office, locked the door, barricaded it. we heard running and things happening upstairs. about 30 minutes later someone came to the door and knocked on the door but we didn't obviously answer and another 15 minutes later someone came and took us into a secure room. >> ms. abdelmageed, can you describe to me in as much detail as you can, what did the gunman look like? >> i couldn't see his face.

my view all i could see was just a black hat and black long-sleevevshirt, possibly gloves on. he had black cargo pants on, the kinds with zippers on the side and the big puffy pockets. he had a huge assault rifle. he had extra ammo. he was coming ready for -- he was coming ready for something. to reload. i don't know. he had m mazines. i couldn't see what else. i saw -- i just saw three dressed exactly the same. >> you're certain you saw three men? >> yes. it looked like their skin color was white. they looked like they were athletic build, and they appeared to be tall. >> and of course we've just learned that one of f e suspects was actually a woman. we'll have the latest on the san bernardino massacre e d the woman: what does it feel like when a woman is having a heart attack? chest pain, like there's a ton of weight on your chest. severe shortness of breath.

jeff pegues is following the investigation. jeff? >> scott, some of the leads that investigators are getting to this point have come because of a name thasurfaced really early on in the minutes after this shooting. law enforcement sources, multiple law enforcement sources confirm for cbs news that one of the possible suspects mentioned is syed farook. health. again, this is a name that has been confirmed by multiple law enforcement sources as a possible suspect in this also we're getting new information about what was found in the vehicle. remember, there was this black leaving the scene of the shooting. according to law enforcement sources, an arar5 style rifle with two pistols as well. investigators are right now trying to trace those weapons. in addition, as the vehicle was
