the lithium ion batteries are catching fire, and it could be because some are poorly made. overstock is no longer selling hoverboards, and it appears that amazon is pulling some of these hoverboard products until the sellers can provide documents proving they meet safety standards. one popular brand, swagway, shared a statement with a few media outlets about this, swagways cost around $400, and are cheaper than most high-end brands that can go for around $15-hundred dollars. but there are even some knockoffs being sold for $300 or $200 dollars, and you need to stay away from those. the government is now getting involved. the united states consumer product safety commission is currently investigating these products after reports of hoverboard fires. and several major us airlines are also banning it from carry-on or checked baggage, in fear of them catching fire. if you want to be safe, remember that a price that's too good to be true usually is. and you may want to buy directly from the manufacturer's website to check that it meets safety standards and if there's a warranty - the higher quality brands that go through safety checks do offer that. also watch the weight limits and don't ride if you weigh more than the limit. and if you do get one for a gift, take a slow, please.(source video: needs more practice. and there's another big tech gift

expected to cause some drama this year -- drones. if you get a drone as a gift, you'll now need to register it with the government -- and this is not just for new drones - it applies to anyone who already owns one. the federal aviation administration said that us residents must register drones online, and you can start as early as next week monday. it's free if you register by january 20th, but after that there's a $5 fee. failure to register a drone can result in a fine - even if it's a small quad-copter you only fly in the backyard. it applies to anything weighing about half a pound to 55 pounds. there are fines if you don't register. a civil penality could be as high as $27 thousnad $500 dollars. and there's a time limit. for anything purchased this week or earlier, you have until febuary 19th. and you have to renew the registration every three years - and yes, that's another $5 fee each time. the faa is doing this to keep a tighter watch on how people are using the airspace. this year, the faa had more than 11-hundred reports of potentially unsafe drone use. that's it for this tech news update, and there's more at cnet.com. from our studios in

to face the pilot shortage. the airline is launching a program to recruit students with little or no experience... and train them to fly. air shows are another way to encourage aviation careers. the breitling jet team is on its first american tour right now. c - b - s news correspondent john blackstone climbed aboard and learned first t hand how w their r performances can inspire young people to become pilots. 3 ctm script: (natsot- cockpit audio) "we line up runway 2-1" "you still want to go?"(john) ha ha, i'll come with you. another mission here. (sot john )you also want them to discover aviation.(sot thierry prissert/ president of breitling u.s.a. ) that's actually probably our number one goal. (quick-natsot) and when you see these pilots flying those planes at air shows all around the country, you inspire people. (narr 4) and that inspiration could prove critical. some in the aviation industry are predicting a pilot shortage in america within the next ten years. so recruiting young people to the profession has become paramount.(sot thierry prissert ) we want momo pilots. we'd like the aviation to flourish. we'd like the world of aviation to be a little more popular. (narr 5) it's estimated some 21,000 pilots will be turning 65 and face mandatory retirement from the four major airlines. those jobs are often filled by military fliers or younger regional pilots moving up. but these days, fewer people are pursuing careers in the cockpit...in part because of the increasing costs of education and flight time...an investment of up to $200,000 to qualify to become a commercial pilot. cbs news aviation and safety expert, captain "sully" sullenberger, says what's really needed is raising pilot wages at regional airlines. (captain "sully" sullenberger/ cbs news aviation and safety expert) it really doesn't make sense for entry level jobs in aviation to sometimes pay less than $20,000 dollars a year, or just over $20,000 a year, when it requires a lot of trainingng i think that the major airlines must bear some responsibilitytyor this current situation. (narr 6) but at air shows, the challenges of the aviation industry gets lost in the clouds. what's on display here is the joy of flight.
