4 degrees at lieman. 3 up at laramy. a cold weekend, i'll et you know whhn we finally thaw out coming up in a few minutes. >> we have team coverage tonight. molly is tracking the slick roads outside our studios, but first, we are starting with corey north of the metro. and corey, the snow stopped where you are. >> reporter: yeah, just got a few light flurries here in west minster. we are down to 20 degrees here in west minster. on our way to single digit temperatures for most of the denver metro area tonight. keep in mind, watch when you are driving for icy patches on the roads. watch the bridges and overpasses. you can see these free up quick. the air on top from the top down and the air below. freezzng from the top up, so we are going to see temperatures, keep those in mind as we are going out tonight and those side streets are going to freeze up.

overpasses. thanks a lot, corey, and mmlly is ootside our denver studios, 3 it is cold and slick out there as well. >> it is cold, and proof of that, look no further than the snow. you can't pack a good snowball,, but the good news is along speier avenue, it is moving smoothly. the roads are dry, but you can bet that as we get later into the night, some of this is going to freeze up on some of those side streets where it is snowy and icy. the big problem area is the walkway and driveway. both of my photographer and i times. you can see it is sheer ice. to show you how icy it is s. i'm going to slide on my belly. but folks, be careful because it is slick. % especially the sidewalks. we are live in denver tonight, molly hendrikson, denver 7. >> maybe we can do the belly slide at 7:00. airport operations are normal. the storm didn't affect too many flights here. only 24 were canceled out of 1500 that were scheduled.

has more than 250 pieces of snow removal equipment. here is some of them at work this morning. we are told the toughest part about your air travel today, may be the drive to the airport. and mike, you're not seeing much more snow in the future. >> no, we should go back out to molly. snow is mostly done. the cold is what follows. so the snow ending, colder tonight. areas of fog may develop on the plains and in denver by morning. a chilly weekend, a gradual warming trend. which days get back to the 40s 3 coming up. >> thanks, mike. we know a man who died after an altercation at the denver jail was killed by deputies. michael marshall died because he couldn't breathe while he was being restrained. denver 7 reporter, lance hernandez talking to the marshall family today. family members say thee are angry and hurt. >> reporter: they are demanding justice.. they are also demanding to see the jailhouse video of what % happened inside here.

secured section of that jail when he became agitated. deputies tried to restrain him. now according to the autopsy report, he was being restrained on the floor when he became more agitated and vomited. he couldn't breathe. he suffered blunt force trauma to his head, shoulders, back, and extremities. family members say they want the deputies involved charged. >> you know, we need justice. % i'm just asking for justice. if they did nothing wrong, how come we can'ttsee what happened? >> reporter: now the mayor's office issued a statement a little bit earlier this evening saying that the administration ii committed to an accountable process and a thorough investigation. the mayor expects that it will be done in a timely manner. the city has said in the past that they will release that video of what happened as soon as the investigation is complete. in denver, lance hernandez, denver 7. >> obviously, it's too early for litigation, but it's important to note. denver paid out nearly $13

cases dealing with law enforcement. jamal hunter who was tortured waa paid $2.53 million. the family of emily rice who pled to death was paid $3 million. and marvin booker's family wass paid $6 million after he was custody. we're learning more about the new body cameras rolling out within the denver police department. 800 officers will soon be wearing that rollout started this week. police say this is all an effort in transparency. police tell us they hope it will improve the quality of evidence in cases where n officer is a witness. we asked what happens if an purpose. >> if somebody came in and there was no use of force reported and they didn't turn on their camera and yet we have a clear understanding that that happened, that would be a real serious consequence for the officer. >> police tell us since this s a learning process, policies will change over time. academies including the air

springs are surging. according to new documents, they went up 50% to 91. complaints also spiked. defense officials claim the higher number is because % students are reporting sex assaults more. >> first responders were busy overnight. firefighters knocked down this fire in larks. a garage went up in flames, but luckily, it didn't spread to the home. firefighters tell us everyone made it out safely. early morning commuters got stuck behind this. there was a multicar crash on i- 25 near castle rock and this injuries. luckily tonight, your commute is looking a lot better. `> a would be car thief was surpriiingly very polite. grand junction police say this man tried to steal a car, he apologized to the victim. a woman called police saying she left her car and went inside her home and came out to find bras hahn nonsitting in the driver's seat. he hit the curb and spun out. the victim aproffed him and

he apologized and ran off. he was later caught by police a short time later. another dumb criminal story to tell you about. a smash and grab burglar left a trail of footprints leading them right to the partment where the guy was staying. when they knocked on the door, a man answered saying he spent the night at his home. his wet shoes told a different story, so they arrested him. police think the man hit three businesses in all. one is on hamden, the other two on broadway. one of the business owners laughed when we explained how >> yes. that is so smart of police. really. >> there have been more than three dozen smash and grab area in just the past month. we were in the area of the most recent smash and grabs in engelwood when we found one business owner getting ahead of the crime. michelle wilson owns a dog grooming shop. she was planning to enhance her security system. because of last night's crimes,

>> so i'm getting security cameras tonight, to help keep everything under surveillance. i'm in the back a lot, and so i just feel more secure with getting some cameras going. >> wilson says she saw similar crimes a year ago in the same area. a fort morgan meat packing plant says it's changing its rehiring policy after 150 muslim workers were fired over a prayyr dispute. the workers say they weren't allowed to leave to pray. they were fired when they failed to show up for work for several days in a row. cargil changed their hiring policy. so those fired over attendance violations can be rehired within 30 days. the rhino district of denver is booming. we found the popular area of town has plenty of people, but not many sidewalks. denver 7's marshall is live along walnut street. and sometimes it's a game of chicken out there. >> reporter: walnut street

probably not what shell silverstein had in mind. >> annoying, there's no sidewalks. i had to walk down the middle of the road with snow and cars coming. >> the edge of the traffic lane is the sidewalk on many blocks. the river north neighborhood between coors field and the stock show. >> this is just a one-way street. most people wear black in the wintertime. if it's night, they will get hit by a car. >> new apartments and warehouses turned into bars and restaurants have new sidewalks, but inbetween, old warehouses have parking right up to the building. just below the loading docks with stairs on each end. >> it looks a little shady. >> especially at night. i wouldn't want to walk up there. >> add to the rhino, not having sidewalks from place to place. >> andrew owns a number of businesses. like the events center, which is a new sidewalk right up from %- another warehouse that doesn't.. >> we change the use. so when it changed from being a warehouse to an event center nightclub. the obligation as on us as the landowner, developer, to add sidewalks.

the revived standards for school lunches are working. new research out this week, calories are down and protein and fiber are up in meals for students. guidelines. to pull it off, denver public schools had to make a lot of food from scratch. >> we're looking at things like levels. trying to decrease the sodium levels that kids are eating unless it's a refined white grains. >> students also have access to salad and fruit bars at lunchtime.

used to. a colorado rape survivor took center stage at the president's virginia. kimberly corbin was assaulted when she was a college student in greeley. >> i have been unspeakably victimized once already and i refuse to let that happen again to myself or my kids. why can't your administration see these restrictions you are putting to make it harder for me to own a gun or harder for me to take that where i need to safe. >> the president responded saying there's nothing he proposed that would prevent her from buying a firearm. the new proposals would prevent her assailant from doing the same thing to another woman. the president is throwing his support behind smart gun technology and a colorado teenager is developing a prototype. ky's smart gun has a built in fingerprint sensor and only fire if t recognizes the fingerprint on the user. he says his technology will

weapons. it could also prevent kids from firing their parent's gun. >> there's 21,000 firearm suicides every year. many of them by teenagers who use a parent's gun. this is an opportunity to prevent that. >> 3d printed plastic. he is trying to raise the money to develop a metal prototype that could be used on a working weapon. a new poll suggests many americans support president obama's recent executive actions on guns. the cnn orc poll shows 67% of those surveyed say they favor the changes the president announced last week. but 57% of those polled say they don't think the executive actions will be effective in reducing gun related deaths in the u.s. >> the power ball jackpot is at a record high. $800 million. it is the biggest jackpot in u.s. history. the next drawing is set for this saturday night. we know the odds aren't really in your favor, but if you did win, you would have more money

might get patchy dense fog forming early in the morning on saturday. it's going to be a chiller down to degrees in denver. 10 at aurora and bennett. looking at readings around 7 degrees up at frazier, georgetown, and dillon. front range numbers are going to be warmer than they will in the mountains. minus 4 at gunnson. skies tomorrow, foggy in the morning. a few flurries expected in the mountain, but nothing significant across the state for tomorrow. quieter day and a cold one. highs mostly in the 20s over northern colorrdo. some 30s down over the southeast. only 14 up at steam boat. jet stream winds going to keep it cold for awhile. we have a pretty strong and northwesterly flow aloft and that's helping pull a lot of cold air down from central canada. across the central and eastern united states. the strongest jet streaa winds are further off to the south and east. the pacific storms are going to hang back for awhile. we'll be quieter here, but just chilly, at least for the weekend and a slow warmingg trend early next week.

and a low of 8. tomorrow the high temperature just 25. the fog early and then a chilly day. stays on the cold through the weekend with temperatures expected in the single digits and the 20s again sunday. mid 30s by monday. and by the time we get to the middle of the week, we'll see some light snow coming up by the time we get to thursday into friday. first, it will be 40s, and a chance of snow. eric looking ahead, not this sunday, but the following sunday when the broncos are playing here at home against to be determined, it looks like it could be cold and snowy. >> we'll see. kind of like the frozen tundra bowl that we watched when we were growing up. thanks. coming up in sport, the nfl's aal pro team was announced. you might be surprised how few brrncos made that list. and the avs are aiming for a third ssraight win. hear what dutchy had to say

welcome to sports extra and happy anniversary. four years ago today, tim tebow hit dt in overtime. yes, the catch and release that stunned the steelers. now i know what you're wild card weekend hasn't been the same aroond here, because the broncos have earned first round byes every year since. they would have a hard time feeling a team this week. including brock osweiler. the big news, bond miller made the first time. chris harris, jr., a second team selection and that was it. only two players from the league's top rated defense.
