nicer where anne is than here. but they're getting better in the denver area. scattered snow continues in the foothills. it's dry out to the north of us. to the east, much, much temperatures other main story. now it's getting cold. it's 19 out there. 3 up in conifer. behind the storm just some very chilly temperatures. tonight. and you still can't get to kansas on i-70. closed. the roads could be worse by morning. molly anderson is out looking for those trouble spots. >> reporter: right now we are on washington. it took us about to get here from the tech center.

but it's the side streets that are the problem areas. there's a lot of slushy snow that pulls your tires in different directions. we're about to hop onto i-25 to show you what we're about. about -- seeing there. conditions already improving hopping onto the on-ramp. and most of i-25 is pretty dry. it is wet in spots, and the further south you travel, we're travelling north, the further south you go, conditions get a little worse. but just really answer some slush on the roadways. so just take it slow if you're headed out and watch for the slick spots on bridges and overpasses. back to you. >> certainly a concern with the temps dipping tonight. thanks, molly. and denver 7 was on the tarmac this morning as dia worked hard

year as they should -- air as they could. travel was much easier today. 146 flights were canceled. 300 were delayed. a big storm for snow totals. 2 feet for nederland to el dorado springs. 16 just northwest of boulder. louisville had 15. 14 in arvada. and the list goes o. this was a big dumper for snow. with the cold temperatures, it's gonna stick around for a while. there's an effort today to get that snow off your street, but the real danger is right under it. >> reporter: right. the small plows they use, i want to show you, they really inches of snow. they don't get down to the pavement, which can create a real icy mess sometimes in the days after the storm. denver had 80 plows out this morning.

normally it takes a foot of snow to bring these out, but denver made an exception today. crews do one pass down the center of the road. a 12-hour shift costs about $50,000 in overtime and fuel. denver says they were able to clear the sites during a normal 8-hour shift. >> these plows don't bring the streets to bare pavement. they make the streets more passable, prevent deep rutting and is help eem navigate residential streets more easily. >> reporter: aurora, lakewood, and fort collins are also plowing their residential roads. lakewood tells me it costs them a minimum of $75,000 to clear their side streets. chances are you're going to have to do this again tonight. he woke up early this morning to shovel the walks. for many of you, there was no

this snow day did cause headaches for some parents. mark boyle caught up with some families today. some parents just had to take the day off work! >> reporter: vacations day so they could get out sledding with their kids. others found out ways to work from home and is spend more time with their children. >> reporter: from enterprises. >> selling hot chocolate. and i thought that it would be a good idea. >> reporter: for those just looking for the quickest way down the hill. these smiles clearly spell out just how kids feel about snow days and the efforts some will make to ensure one. >> we also pushed three ice cubes down the toilet, and every time we do that, it makes a snow day. >> reporter: every time

grab the sleds. just county as well, denver public schools have had two snow days this year. in cherry creek in douglas county, they hhve had three. >> you can see all the kids, having a great time with their family, hit the sleds and just go with it. >> reporter: for parents, balancing work and vacation days came a little tricky. most don't seem too concerned taking the occasion day off. >> taking them sledding, take the day off. >> reporter: of the districts we spoke with, jefferson county will have to make a day up because their mountain schools have three days off. for cherry creek, they're not too worried.

and anne trujillo out in warmer san francisco. even though it's only in the 50s. super bowltivities are really picking up there. just five days away from the big game! >> reporter: i know, and the excitement is definitely building! i have orange on. we're definitely seeing a lot more orange and blue on the streets of san francisco. and the broncos also getting involved by organizing activities for the fans that are coming out here. today though we checked out the one area in san francisco not preparing for the game. it was a busy day in china and the architecture and else! you can get just about anything you want, including chicken hanging in the windows. different reason. bowl game? party?

if there was a super bowl rty, it would be here. but this is for the chinese new year right now. >> reporter: chinese new year is next monday. that's what families are busy preparing for right now. final preparations issuing made at levv stadium. marshall is live in santa clara. you got access to the field. that's actually the last time we'll be able to get inside. >> reporter: and from the field level, it felt small. about 70,000 feet, capacity for the super bowl. compare that to the afc championship game, 77,000 at %- home in denver. but there are some amenities here that are not yet available at mile high. >> reporter: levi stadium is now under watch and locked down. even though the sfaum has not hosted a game since january 3rd, it's still not ready.

we're gonna have to finish off our media areas. run tabling throughout the building. >> reporter: the nfl has been adding to the stadium for a month, still installing the goal post cam, testing the graphics, and putting up equal panthers logos. >> we try to make this as much of a home game for both teams as we can. >> reporter: and will broncos made a special request that the but not for the players. >> it's just having the place for thunder to go, the right food available for thunder. lot more. that's it from santa clara and levi stadium. avalanche danger is higher with this recent storm we just had. a warning was just canceled a few hours ago. ski patrols are getting prepared. these dogs are set to go onto a rescue. the danger is already high across most of the state. >> reporter: that's right. if you like to venture out into the back country, here's something you can benefit from. go to the information center website. they have a match that outlines where the avalanche danger highs. and you never know how good you are when you head out to the backcountry.

>> reporter: the last two days in the backcountry have been quiet. >> i think a lot of people are staying inside. >> reporter: a change from an already busy year. so far two people have died in avalanches in our state. she responded to one of those. >> anytime you hear on the radio that someone is found and they won't be walking home to their family that night is a sad situation. >> reporter: that's more prevalent in colorado. in the last 65 years, colorado has had nearly twice as many avalanche deaths as alaska. colorado leads the nation in avalanche deaths. why? experts say it's because the mountains are easy to access. so if you want to venturute in the country -- venture out in the country, be prepared. >> look at a slope, and if it looks like it's not safe, don't be tempted. it's not worth death. >> reporter: always let someone know where you're
