two deputies injured are still on the maryland. >> everyone we spoke with said most of all carrigan's smiling school. >> everyone is speaking so highly of him. >> reporter: that's right. they say he was just a charismatic humble kind of guy that would walk into anywhere in ttwn and talk to everybody in the room. now those in town are starting to come to a realization that are over. connected. everybody is really having a difficult time today. >> reporter: memory and stories are all that this bailey community and school district has left of deputy nate carrigan. >> one of our students who just competed quite well at the state wrestling tournament and nate pulled his car up next to this student and roll down the window and hey, you really represented us well. >> reporter: connected is an understatement. carrigan was a school bus driver while training to be a deputy.

officer and a long time football and baseball coach. his players, you can imagine, are heartbroken. >> our coach, we can play for him and try to continue on what he would have wanted us to do. >> reporter: of course, every officer nate carrigan no different had their favorite lunch spot here inside the rustic station where he ordered the green chili all the time. >> we'd tease him about what he's going to eat today and stuff like that. they all were very, very sweet, just a very kindhearted man and he's going to be dearly missed. >> reporter: those here talk about those memories and stories of nate with a big smile on their face, the same big smile they say nate always had on his face. it's an especially tough time around the school right now because he's been visiting a lot because baseball season is coming up. the season starts on monday. we're live in bailey mark boyle, denver7. >> thank you, mark. after the shooting yesterday there was a lot of

patrol deputy colby martin. he was shot several times. he's still in serious condition in the hospital, but the clark county sheriff told us deputy martin is now up and around. after sheriff wagner talked about the deputies he gave us more details about what happened at the home yesterday. he stressed they knew it was a dangerous situation because of past run-ins with martin wirth, but said they never thought it would escalate to what it did yesterday. >> we did not force a violent confrontation yesterday. mr. wirth did. we simply responded to the situation that was presented to us. >> sheriff wagner said back in 2014 they had the exact same call with wirth and no one was hurt then.. so going into yesterday's call they had no suspicion to think it would end the way it did. today the sheriff talked about a recent encounter wirth had with jefferson county sheriff's deputies according to a report obtained by denver7. >> wirth told an employee at an insurance agency something to the effect of i should just et my gun and shoot the first cop i see.

sheriff's office there to alert them of those remarks and later that same day when clark county deputies tried to talk to him about it, he got tackled in the driveway of his home after he wouldn't stop to discuss it with them. >> you spoke to people who consider wirth friend. >> they paint an entirely different picture of wirth than the one coming to light saying plant they knew was generous and helped the homeless -- the man they knew was generous and helped the homeless. >> reporter: tim holland said it's difficult to talk about martin wirth of what happened. >> i feel sympathy all around. i feel bad for the police officers that were killed. we here in denver who loved martin, we fool a tremendous sense of loss for -- feel a tremendous sense of loss for our friend. >> reporter: holland said he met wirth in 2011 when occupy denver was getting underway. he described twwlight as a

wirth as a bernie sanders popu list and said he knew nothing of wirth shooting a man awry. wirth was acquitted in that face. wirth posted on facebook some police know they need to be abolished. still wirth was an intelligent man friends say who worked as an engineer. >> you get to be 50 and suddenly you're an expendable member of the workforce. >> i did not pay mortgage to a bunch of crooks known as nation star mortgage. >> reporter: in this youtube video wirth said making payments to his mortgage company was like contributing to criminal behavior. >> they're really trying to paint it like he was some waco maniac and he was not like that. he was a good guy. >> reporter: and holland told me he understands that many people will always think of wirth as a cop killer, but he said wirth was also a friend to many people.

field here before the big hockey game begins tomorrow night. chief meteorologist mike nelson joins us now. how does the first alert forecast look for these big games? >> better for baseball than hockey, highs in the 40s, much warmer the next couple days, currently holding in the 40s at city park, 30s in the foothills. radar is clean, no precipitation coming our way the next couple days. what we have is a cool night tonight, a really nice day on friday, then a 70-degree temperature coming up for that hockey game followed by a chance of some snow. annelementary pe teacher is in jail and parents are outraged their kids' teacher was arrested for sexual exploitation of a child. denver7 reporter sally mamdooh has been following this story all day. >> reporter: parents received an e-mail alerting them to this situation back in em does, but

in december, but that gym teacher lucas young was arrested. he was charged with three counts of sexual exploitation of a child. a student i spoke with just a few moments ago tells me she's just in disbelief, but the allegations in ttis 50 page incident report paints a different man. the investigation as i mentioned began back in december when he told police child pornography images accidentally popped up on his computer. further investigation revealed that young had images on his personal e-mail and his district issued computer. during the investigation he was placed on leave by the school and was prevented from teaching in lafayette. mother of two stella peterson is shocked to hear that about she said her daughter is surprised as well because he students. >> she was sad. she really thinks very highly of mr. young and is still in

she does not quite understand what's going on. >> reporter: right now young is on administrative leave without pay. the district tells me if he's convicted on those charges he's now facing, he will definitely be let go. for now we're live in arvada, sally mamdooh, denver7. an inmate at the denver jail was mistakenly let out this morning. he has a long rap sheet including assault, resisting arrest and violating parole. once the jail found out about the mistake, it took about three hours to find him. this isn't the first time it's happened at the denver jail. in 2014 five inmates were let out early. how safe is your child's helmet on the football field? it has nothing to do with the price. parents think if it's more expensive, it must be safer. researchers at cu found that is not true. extra money does not pay for extra protection. you really need to look for this seal that shows it has been approved by a national committee.

better through glenwood canyon now one lane of traffic open in each direction. work continues to clean up this rockslide that closed down the interstate just over a week ago. since then only one lane of traffic has been open during the evenings. new tonight at 6:00 a bug about the size of a dime is setting cities across the metro area back thousands of dollars. >> it's because these insects can kill giant trees. the problem is now moving from mountains into boulder, even broomfield where brendaliss gonzalez joins us with the latest effort to stop these insects from spreading, brenda. >> reporter: i want you to see just how much damage this insect can cause. look at this tree up here. you can see the trail it's left behind killing that part of this ash tree. thing is if this thing keeps spreading, we're talking about more than 1 million trees in danger in denver alone. pretty bad shape. >> reporter: at first glance.

>> reporter: josh moran can already tell what's wrong with this ash tree. >> you can see there's this s- shaped gallery. >> reporter: what caused this kind of damage? >> it's actually a pretty insect. >> reporter: this is an emerald ash borer in its final phase. it causes the most damage when it's a larva. about the insect is already spreading around boulder. >> -- the insect is already spreading around boulder. >> we're forecasting we'll have to remove more and more trees as this spread. >> reporter: so now in a city 10 miles away tom wells is inspecting ash bark around broomfield just in case. the city is investing close to $200,000 to treat existing trees and plant new ones. >> this will be what, a 1/4 of the ash population that we hope to save. >> reporter: an investment wells thinks is worth every penny. >> not only it cleans your air and all this sort of stuff, it

distance, denver beautiful with just a few clouds. this is a little different view from our downtown camera looking off, the same view off to the west, 45 at dia, 38 and humidity 33% with light easterly winds. as far as conditions today, we hit 48 officially at dia. 17 was our low this morning, chilly low, the normals 409 and 21 and the records are 74 and -- 49 and 21 and the records are 74 and 14 below. we'll have mild weather the next couple of days. stormy in the east still, no more severe weather, but these two low pressure systems are combined to produce snow from maine into tennessee this evening. the warmer air will come our way because the jet stream wind show, this little bump here is a ridge in the upper the trough, the colder air moving east of us. as we get into friday and saturday this ridge coming in here means quiet weather, lighter winds and milder temperatures across the state.

the high country, single digits and teens expected, 27 in grand junction, 25 in denver and eastern plains. tomorrow plenty of sunshine all day long, 57 in den, 58 at colorado springs, some mid-60s down over southeastern colorado and 40s to near 50 expected in most of the mountains. front range lows tonight cold up in the mountains and foothills with some of the readings dropping into the teens there, 14 grand lake and winter park, 25 denver, 24 on the plains at fort morgan. for tomorrow it's upper 50s to low 60s with sunshine, mountains a spring skiing type day with temperatures in the 40s under sunny skies. light winds. tomorrow the high temperature is expected to climb up to the upper 50s, mostly sunny, very pleasant conditions. it gets even warmer on saturday with a high temperature reaching 70 degrees under mostly sunny skies. that's our bright spot. a minor front comes through sunday, cooler, maybe a few sprinkles of rain on the
