crisis. michigan's republican governor rick snyder has lawyered up at state expense to assist with civil representation of the case. residents of flint got help from the federal government yesterday through expanded medicaid coverage but a $200 million aid package is stuck in the senate because of procedural issues. also a mother who testified to congress about the crisis is now suing firms hired to evaluate the city's water and several officials. maryland's highest court considering whether a police officer in the freddie gray case must be forced to testify against fellow officers. six baltimore officers have been charged with the arrest and death of gray, who died after being in police custody. the hearing involved officer william porter. he's the only one who has gone to trial. that case ended in a hung jury. now that three suspects are in custody, investigators are

-- seven other robbers who broke into a houston gun store and stole dozens high-power weapons. video shows the smash and grab operation that took less than two minutes. question now is, where are all those guns in abc's phillip mena has the latest from houston. >> reporter: authorities in texas remain on the hunt for the brazen thieves seen here in this dramatic nick surveillance video, smashing into a houston gun store in less than 90 seconds. using a chain tied to a pickup truck to yank the steel doors right off their hinges. seven of the ten suspects who poured in and pillaged the store, still on the run. authorities making three arrests late wednesday, following a two-day manhunt. the thieves wasted no time using hammers to smash display cases. this one swiping 18 handguns in 30 seconds. >> we've got people right now, pounding the pavement, on the street, looking for those guns. >> reporter: in just under three minutes, the thieves got away with more than 50 firearms, including assault rifles. >> these guns can be used to commit more robberies or other sorts of criminal activity.

has dismissed oscar pistorius's appeal of his murder conviction. he had appealed saying another court made a mistake when it overturned a manslaughter conviction and declared pistorious guilty of murdering his girlfriend reva steenkamp. the court's dismissal of that appeal clears the way for him to be sentenced next month. a white police officer in alabama is now charged for the murder for the death of a black man. lawyers for officer aaron smith say the charges are politically motivated but the dead man's family is calling for justice. abc's steve osunsami reports. from montgomery. >> reporter: this is the face of a young white police officer arrested in montgomery, charged with murdering a black man. 58-year-old greg gunn. police say 23-year-old aaron smith was working third shift last thursday, patrolling a black neighborhood, when he stopped mr. gunn, who was unarmed, and walking home from a card game. >> there was a slight struggle that continued for about a block or so, at which time the officer fired and shot and killed the suspect. >> reporter: smith's lawyer says

because, he says, gunn was beating the officer with some sort of pipe or baton. he thinks the arrest is all politics. >> we believe that these charges were brought to prevent public unrest. >> reporter: it's not lost on city leaders that this is considered the birthplace of the modern civil rights movement. the march from selma to montgomery in '65 passed right through the neighborhood where gunn was killed. >> it really is trying our soul, as a community. >> reporter: we're learning that gunn's father was one of this city's first black police officers. his mother, who he lived with, was happy to see law enforcement move so quickly. >> all i want is justice. >> reporter: gunn was killed right here, literally just a few feet from his home. he had almost made it. this city remains divided. it was a group of police officers who came up with the money for officer smith's bail. steve osunsami, abc news, montgomery. also in the south, investigators in mississippi are widening their search for an escaped inmate facing capital murder charges.

the latest now the latest now in efforts to battle the zika virus. scientists in brazil say a second more common mosquito may also carry the virus. if true, that would complicate work to get rid of the virus. google says half a dozen of its engineers are helping to track the spread of the virus by writing programs to predict where it might spread next. new research linking aspirin to reduced risk of person cancers. doctors found that people who take low-dose aspirin every day had a 19% lower chance of developing colon cancer. they also found a 3% lower risk of cancer overall for those taking low dose aspirin at least twice a week. but doctors warn aspirin is no substitute for colon cancer screening. >> it's amazing. they've always talked little baby aspirins and what they can do.

in alabama, a white police officer is now charged with the murder for the death of a black man. lawyers for officer aaron smith say that the charges are politically motivated but the dead man's family is calling for justice. here's abc's elizabeth hur. >> reporter: for nellie gunn, an arrest in the shooting death of her son is an answer to her prayers. >> god turned it around and make it good. i don't care how a man do, god's got the -- >> reporter: charged with murdering greg gunn of montgomery, alabama, is 23-year-old officer aaron smith, who through his attorney, is fighting to clear his name. >> mr. gunn fled and used force against this officer, threatened the life of this officer and the citizens of this community. >> reporter: the lawyer maintains smith was confronted by a dangerous suspect. according to police, smith shot and killed gunn following an altercation last week. >> there was a slight struggle.

they also say mccloud took the guard's radio and car keys and swapped clothes with him, which he wore just long enough to get away. >> we did recover the pants that he was wearing last night, the green guard pants that he took from the jail guard. people also should understand that he could have changed his appearance. he could be much more clean shaven than he was. >> and they also warn that mccloud is armed and dangerous. he was awaiting trial on charges of raping and killing a 69-year-old woman last year. a roman catholic bishop in central pennsylvania is promising action after a scathing report about priest sexual abuse against children. that report says two former bishops either covered up or didn't do enough to respond to hundreds of abuse allegations over several decades. the current bishop says he's taking steps including putting a list of all priests who are the subject of credible allegations online. >> worse things have happened throughout the centuries in the

that's not to excuse what's going on and what we're dealing with at the present moment. not at all. >> he's also promising a full review of child protection policies. a hot line that's been set up to receive information from additional victims has received more than 100 calls in just the last couple of days. public health investigators in wisconsin are testing water, skin care products and medications following a deadly bacterial outbreak. that outbreak in the southern part of the state has made 44 people sick. it may be linked to 18 deaths. but investigators can't find the source right now. most of the victims have been elderly people with underlying health issues. we're getting new clues in the battle against the zika virus. scientists in brazil say a second more common mosquito may also carry the virus. if that's true, that would complicate efforts to wipe out zika. two people on the caribbean island of martinique have suffered paralysis after being infected by zika.
