7:07 am
when he's going there, it's unclear. back to you. >> he loves idaho potatoes and we'll talk to him in a moment. also, now, to another big headline. the major verdict in the erin andrews trial. the sportscaster leaving the courtroom with a huge win. a jury awarding her $55 million over the secret nude video a stalker recorded at a hotel. abc's eva pilgrim has the very latest for us from nashville this morning. good morning, eva. >> reporter: amy after two weeks of an emotional trial, centered around that naked video of erin andrews, it took the jury about six hours to make a decision. and one juror telling abc news, they wanted this verdict to send a message. >> 55 million, correct? >> yes, sir. >> reporter: erin andrews overcome with emotion as the judge read the verdict. the jury deciding the nashville marriott shares the blame for that secretly recorded naked video seen by more than 17 million people. erin andrews later tweeting this statement. i've been honored by all the support from victims around the world.
7:08 am
able to stand up and hold accountable those whose job it is to protect everyone's safety. >> it's ongoing and it's going to be ongoing for the rest of her life. >> reporter: andrews claimed the hotel made it easy for her stalker, michael barrett to get a room next door to hers and through a peephole he altered to shoot video of her getting out of the shower. the hotel claims he was a criminal who tricked them into gaining access and one juror telling abc news said the only debate for the group was how much to pay her. the $55 million payout will be split almost in half with barrett taking 51% of the fault. the hotel's management company and owner, 49%. >> an amount that high sends a pretty strong message. >> the hotel industry we just felt like they need to get the mess privacy. it's their personal life and you got to take that seriously. >> reporter: the hotel's lawyers disappointed with the outcome saying they hope to eventually talk to the jurors before deciding if they will appeal.
7:09 am
happened before and hadn't happened since. there are all kinds of measures that were undertaken after this was discovered, what mr. barrett had done. >> reporter: the hotel's lawyer say that nashville marriot has installed peoplehole covers on all of the rooms' doors to make sure this never happens again. amy. >> eva pilgrim, thanks so much. joining us now abc news chief legal analyst, dan abrams. six hours. were you surprised by such a quick and large verdict? >> i was stunned by the speed. this was a long jury with a lot of complicated legal questions. but let's be clear. this was a huge win for erin andrews. not just in terms of the number, but in terms of the way the verdict came down. meaning the concern for erin andrews was too much of this verdict will be for barrett, the guy who actually filmed it. why is that a problem? he's got no money so the real question was how much is going to be allocated to marriott so by doing this verdict at 51%
7:10 am
was clearly the guy who actually did it, but then a whole 49% for marriott, that's about as good a verdict as she could get in terms of the split. because it means not only do you have this big $55 million verdict, but you have this $26 million verdict against marriott. so all in all a really big win for erin andrews. >> do you think that the amount will hold, though, under appeal? >> the first question is going to be for the judge. the judge is going to review this verdict first and if the judge thinks that it's excessive, the judge could actually be involved in reducing it first of all even before an appeal but i think that there's very likely this verdict will stand largely even if it's >> all right, dan abrams, we appreciate it. thanks so much. and now to that bombshell announcement rocking the tennis world, maria sharapova, one of the sport's biggest stars calling a press conference admitting she failed a drug abc's ryan smith is here with the latest on that.

7:13 am
found to unintentionally fail tests without fault can get as little as no penalty. she will be provisionally suspended sunday and already nike and watch brand tag heuer cutting ties with the star. >> while the investigation continues. >> right. >> it is refreshing to have someone openly admit that. >> take that responsibility. back to the white house race. now four contests, donald trump the front-runner in all of them. he joins us now, mr. trump, thank you for joining us again this morning. you are the front-runner in the four states today but you're taking a lot of hits, as well. coming in against you and our poll shows you falling off your peak, both ted cruz and marco rubio beating you in head-to-head matchups. are you worried this pile-on is drawing blood? >> no, i think we're doing very well and we're leading in michigan and we're leading in mississippi and nationally we're leading as i think you see the cnn poll had us at 49% to 15%. but certainly they're spending tens of millions on fighting me, the establishment and, you know,
7:14 am
there. you had failed people mitt romney talking, he had one of the worst campaigns i've ever witnessed in my life and he's out there now speaking as negatively as he can. you know, where was that energy when he was fighting obama? he disappeared he was a terrible candidate so i guess, you know, i would imagine something like that could have an impact but we have a lot of loyal people. that want to see america be great again. >> nobody would call michael bloomberg a failure. here's what he said yesterday. he's not getting in because he's worried it might help you and went on to say this -- "trump has run the most divisive and demagogic presidential campaign i can remember, preying on people's prejudices and fears. abraham lincoln, the father of the republican party, appealed to our better angels. trump appeals to our worst impulses," that's from someone who's been pretty friendly to you and says he won't get in to help make sure you don't win. >> well, look, you know, i mean
7:15 am
when he had a problem with ferry point, which was a failed project in new york he called on me to solve it and i did. i made it successful and was under construction for 20 years and nobody knew what to do. he used to be a friend of mine. i guess he disagrees with what i'm saying but a lot agree. we have to be vigilant, we have to be smart, we have to strengthen our military and strengthen our borders. we have to get rid of obamacare and replace it with something good, george and, you know, i don't know about the ones you have but the ones i'm looking at, i'm way up in michigan and way up in mississippi which are going today and i'm doing well in idaho. i love their potatoes and i'm doing well in idaho and doing well in hawaii, so i just don't know what to tell you. >> meantime, the number of prominent people comparing you to adolf hitler is growing by the day. you saw over the weekend louis c.k. and glenn beck called you a dangerous man and yesterday the mexican president said you're using the same kind of language
7:16 am
i can't remember that kind of comparison being used against any other presidential candidate. does it suggest to you, you should tone down your rhetoric and tactics? >> well, maybe so but i mean, look, i have a tremendous following. we want to make america great again. it's a strong following. i don't know about the hitler comparison. i hadn't heard that but it's a terrible comparison. i'm not happy about that certainly. i don't want that comparison but, you know, we have to be strong and we have to be vigilant and people agree with that and we don't want to lose our jobs to china and we don't want to lose our jobs to mexico and japan and all of these countries that taking our jobs away from us like we're children. we don't know what we're doing. we have leaders that don't know what they're doing. we're losing so much in this country and we're losing -- we're losing the spirit and we just can't do it so i have to be -- i have to be strong and, again, i have a group of -- i have a tremendous following. you know, the republican, the biggest story in politics is how many people are going to the primaries on the republican
7:17 am
they're up 55%, 60%. some are up as much as 100%. and that hasn't happened ever. they say it's never happened. and the democrats are down 35% so, you know, something positive is happening. >> we'll wait to see what happens tonight, thanks for joining us this morning. >> thank you very much. >> all right, thank you, george. nfl superstar peyton manning made it official yesterday. announcing his retirement and ending his record-breaking career. the broncos quarterback and two-time super bowl champ known as the sheriff got emotional when he announced his decision. >> today, i retire from pro football. thank you to the indianapolis colts organization and all of the fans across this country, to all of my denver teammates, for this old quarterback and, of course, my gratitude to the broncos fans everywhere. i revere football. i love the game. so you don't have to wonder if i'll miss it, absolutely,
