shortly. but we continue with new details about a woman's tragic death in westminster. the jefferson county coroner says amanda kirshner was the woman killed. police say the operator sounded the horn, and braked, but she didn't hear it. a fort carson soldier has been killed in afghanistan. the u.s. department of defense says staff wilbur from illinois, died in kandahar friday in a non-combat incident. the 36-year-old was there as part of a mission called operation freedom sentinel. fort carson released a statement saying in part, it's always hard to lose a part of our military family. our thoughts and prayers are with staff sergeant christopher wilbur's family and friends. starting tomorrow,

the new two way bike lane. this means some changes for drivers as well. the area only has three traffic lanes. one of them was used to create the new bike lane, which also means the parking spaces have been pushed out. the change is already causing mixed feelings among business owners right in front of those new bike lanes. live on south broadway, what they're telling customers to expect tomorrow. >> reporter: the main thing they want to let drivers know is that there is still parking now not so close to the meters as they're used to. but this is not the first bike protected bike lane here in denver. we went to an area, where there's already a protected bike lane to talk to business owners and see what it's done for them. >> i really kind of wonder if it's going to be good or not. >> reporter: had stretch of south broadway isn't how it used to be. >> i don't know how the bicycle

>> reporter: bicyclests will have a two way lane all to themselves. protecting them from oncoming traffic. >> it's going to take a while for people to get used to it. >> reporter: lori gibbons is still considering how the changes may affect her business. >> on the good side, it could bring a lot of bike people. >> every person has asked me, can i park here? am i going >> reporter: other cities with protected bike lanes noticed an uptick in sales at retail stores. owners in new york so you their business nearly double. ? [ music ] ? >> reporter: we headed to 14th street in downtown denver, where there's a protected bike lane already up. we wanted to know what business owners there had to say about what to expect. >> i'd say look forward to it. >> reporter: jim can't yet tell whether the lanes have helped

he can say any concerns with parking are long gone. city leaders will wait to hear from the public before deciding how long to keep the lanes open on south broadway. in the meantime, all business owners here can do is wait. >> we'll see how it affects business. >> reporter: this city is going to give these lanes three months before they look at public input to see whether or not to extend the time they have these lanes extend the lanes all together. on the fire lert, we're keeping a close eye on the spring creek fire in mesa, and garfield counties. a new update shows the fire has grown to 621 acres. still only 21% contained. there are evacuation orders in place for people living near battle lake mesa. >> i know yesterday, they were concerned about the winds.

and near battle lake mesa, where this is burning, and house top on motain road, especially where the fire warning is in effect. we'll keep a close eye on that. but for the most part, it's been very dry across colorado. very dry for the western slope and here in denver. so we've had partly cloudy skies today. highs right around 90 degrees. we're still in the upper 80s and low 90s for the front range. we still have 70s toward blackhawk and netterland at ?his hour. tonight, we'll have 0 overnight lows in the upper 50s. partly cloudy, but big changes showing up on the seven-day forecast. i'll have all of those changes coming up in a few minutes. new video at 5:00, showing a dramatic rescue in baton rouge, louisiana, this weekend. a woman and her dog were trapped in that red car, you see sinking in the historic flood waters. rescuers tried breaking her car window, they couldn't do it.

through her cloth roof. he even dived back in to rescue her dog. leave the area. >> a night of violence in milwaukee after a deadly police shooting. today, the community is stuck cleaning up this giant mess left behind. businesses burned out, cars smashed, and charred. police identifying 23-year-old sillvan smith as the armed man they shot and killed. sparked protests and a standoff with officers in riot down, and that's when they shot him. a house in steamboat springs destroyed. just look at these photos. you can see the house was completely engulfed in flames overnight. the fire started to ignite nearby trees, so neighbors called 911. firefighters were on the scene for several hours fighting those flames, and once they got them out, she discovered natural gas had been fueling this fire. the gas was then shut off.

a dumpster outside the store at colfax and race caught fire in morning. denver fire put out the flames before they spread to a nearby building. the cause is still under investigation. denver water's new rate structure has people feeling the heat at the height of the summer long watering season. denver 7's amanda dell castilia >> i'm sure some people would be m that. but i'm not going to do that. i'm going to keep my grass green. >> reporter: sam has lived in denver for more than 30 years. he says he's used to reasonable increase. when denver was threatened with a drought, he was more conservative with his water % use. >> they said they didn't make enough money, because they didn't sell enough water, so they raised the ates. to me, that's a bit of a hypocrisy. >> reporter: denver water

3.8 revenue increase to fix pipes. people weren't anticipating the hike to be so drastic. heather has also seen a hike. >> i have to guess it's because of production. >> reporter: fewer inches of rain led to higher bills. >> what are you going to do? they have a monopoly. they have it, we want it, we pay for it. >> reporter: and now paying 25 to $30 more. i anything. i will just pay for it a little bit more each month. >> other water users tell our partners at the denver post, the new structure is leading customer who is use the least amount of water with more expensive bills. before water says those increases are because they're using more water. the spokesperson gave us this statement. there has been a 32% increase in water usage this year compared to last year and our rate structure is based on the

some people who do use a lot of water are seeing a decrease in their bill, and here's why. denver water originally had a 4 tiered billing system. people in the 1st tear use less water, and people in the 4th tear use the most. thousand there are only three tiers. they're in the 3rd, resulting in up to 30% decreases. vulgar graffiti drown around a stapleton park. we received the images denver 7 viewer. we're blurring out a lot of the images, because they're too bad to show on television. they painted racist, and homophobic pictures. >> i was actually surprised. very surprised to see it in this particular neighborhood. maybe more in the downtown area, but out here i wouldn't have expected that. >> we called police to follow up and see if those images have been covered up and if they

still waiting on a call back. denver 7 following breaking news in elizabeth. two people have been hurt in a roof collapse there. this is a look over the scene. two people were inside that small storage building, when the roof collapsed. one of those people was seriously hurt. >> reporter: yeah, critically hurt,,molly. take a look. i want to he show you what this shed looks like, or this outbuilding. two of the walls are still west wall, but the ro is laying on the ground, this building partially collapsed this afternoon. neighbors tell us that a husband and wife were out here demoing the shed. it's apparently and older shed. while they were in the process, the roof collapsed on top of the man, trapping him underneath. his wife called 911, and he had to be airlifted to an area hospital, presumably, sky ridge

but again, this building partially collapsed on top of a man, an older gentleman who lives out here, his wifeless also injured. she had minor injuries, she was transported to the hospital as well. as far as we know, right now, he's in critical condition.

a denver 7 traffic alert, sable if you can. the road is closed so crews can repa damaged wires. you can use mississippi, or chambers to get around that closure. it will be in place for a few days. there's also a closure on arapahoe road to watch out for. c-dot is closing the westbound lanes beneath i-25 tonight at 10:00. lane restrictions will start at 8:00 p.m. to prepare for that closure, that's whenofficials will also shut down the southbound i-25

bridge in that area. lanes should reopen tomorrow morning at 5:00. a new sidewalk art project has taken over parts of east colfax. take a look at this. local artists work with school students in denver's refugee unit, to paint a mural this morning. it's part of connecting the community with art project, funded by the denver arts and >> this is the funded campaign that actually was a sidewalk mural. the other campaigns have been crosswalks, intersections, buildings. so this is the first of its kind. >> the mural design includes the sate of colorado and denver flags, and columbine flower. hamburger mary's is coming

tonight, we'll continue with this dry scenario across the state. a few scattered showers well to our south. otherwise, stable air has moved in, so here around denver, it's been very quiet, just those clouds we just saw into the hills. otherwise, very quiet, and it has been, we see a few pop up showers and had one right here north of callahan. but that has disappeared. that's good news as well. a few poo up showers, then they it will be pretty much dry tonightthere around denver, then will will be warmer into tomorrow afternoon, then cooler air moves in by the end of this coming week. so we do have some changes on the seven-day forecast. but we are right around where we should be this time of the year. upper 80s for afternoon highss 57 last night for an overnight low. but the record, still 100 degrees. as you look outside now, temperatures in the upper 80s, to around 90 degrees. high pressure is going to be

high pressure, kind of dominates, spreads out, and doesn't allow any storminess to come into our area. that's what's going to be happening the next couple of days. we'll have temperatures into the 60s overnight tonight. then into the low 90s to mid-90 tomorrow afternoon in the denver area. even through tomorrow morning, it's going to be very quiet and dry here. a few high clouds moving on in. like 2:00 tomorrow afternoon, a few scattered showers trying to develop here, off to our west, into the foothills, but really come together for that. and i think we'll remain dry here in denver, but a few scattered showers developing across the eastern plains in the heat of the day tomorrow afternoon, and even into tuesday. pretty quiet weather as well. 57degrees overnight. partly cloudy skies. it will be nice with light winds, then tomorrow, highs in the low to mid-90s. it will be sunny and dry for the afternoon. for our highs tomorrow, we'll have mid-90s for the western slopes.

free lyft rides in centennial. brendaliss gonzales learned more about the test program and had a look. >> reporter: getting here to catch a ride can be a challenge. >> bus service is limited, on this side of town. >> reporter: because of the lack of bus service, jeremy depends on rtd's call in ride shuttle to get here. but service is limited, so in some cases, he >> reporter: starting next week, he may not have to. they're partnering with the denver south transportation management association to pay for your lyft ride, to and from their dry creek station. it's the first city in the nation to offer free lyft rides, and they hope the 6th month trial will have more teem riding. for now, only people within a certain radius from the station will get to use the service.

denver 7 following breaking news in elizabeth. two people have been hurt after a storage building c russell,hat have you learned about what happened? >> reporter: molly, take a look. right away i want to show you what this looks like. there's a shed that's partially collapsed right there. the north wall and the west wall are still standing, but you can see the roof is on the ground. here's what neighbors say happened. they say the wife and the husband were out here dismantling this shed. it's apparently an older shed. they were taking it apart. as they were doing that, the

critically injured, fight for life came. they had to transport him to an area hospital. again, at last word, he's in critical condition. the roof also partially hit the wife as it was coming down. she had minor injuries. neighbors describe it as a frantic scene. the wife was yelling for help, and screaming for help as this happened. again, one man transported with criticalliers. we'll keep you updated as this unfolds. >> thank you, russell. right now, the arapahoe county sheriff's office is looking for four people wanted in connection to a mariiuana dispensary robbery. this happened on east yale, near south monaco. three men and a masked woman, robbed the dispensary. a dry, warm day for us here across the front range, just a

barrier between the bicyclists and oncoming vehicles. this seems to be a concept that isn't new to denver. in fact, in other cities it seems to have worked. studies in salt lake city and new york city show an increase in retale sales at shops near protected bike lanes. while bus owners say it's too early to tell whether it's helped or lane serves its purposes. to know whether to extend it for at least another year. meanwhile, business owners here say all they can really do is wait and see. >> it's going to take a while for people to get used to it. especially a two-way lane being in the ride side. i don't know. i think that could be a little bit crazy. >> reporter: a handful of

concerned about the parking situation, worried whether or not drivers will be discouraged and head some place else. for the most part, most people around here say it's a good thing. brendaliss gonzalez, denver 7. paving work started today between i470 and the jefferson terminal. it's part of the rehabblitation work crews do most of the work will be done overnight. the project should be finished by late fall. starting tomorrow, sewer line work. westbound lanes will be closed between bannock and broadway for that work. during peak travel times, three lanes will stay open for traffic, other times, only two lanes will be open. some hope for people who

i'm denver 7 meteorologist stacey donaldson, partly cloudy skies here over the denver metro area. not much to speak of in the way of rainfall across the state. it has been very quiet as more stable air has been settling on in. at the memorial gorge bridge, very busy today, with all the nice weather in that direction. a few scattered showers well to our south, down toward the southern border of colorado.

just a few clouds into the foothills at this point. we just saw that on the camera. for our satellite radar picture, down to the south, a few scattered showers popping up, just to the west of colorado springs. otherwise, no shower activity around anymore around the limon arra. it will be dry tonight in the denver area. warmer on monday. then a cool down coming by the end of this coming week. so we'll be right around 80 degrees by the time friday. for today, we hit 89 degrees for this afternoon. 88 is ormal. 100, the record set back in 1962. so we have some 750s up into the foothills, and the higher elevations at this point. 86 for city park. 82 for parker. 89 for fort lupton. what we're going to see in the next 48 hours, high pressure, it will stay warm, and it will stay dry at least for the most part. we may have a few scattered showers slipping underneath
