by an ordinance. it came a part of the city charter and doing away with it would be difficult. a little earlier protesters gathered outside the city and county building asking members to do the right thing and the office reviews investigations related to access the police force and misconduct and makes recommendations. >> it has been difficult in the past for the office to make findings on investigations didn't have all the facts. they have been having problems getting body camera footage and things like that.>>reporter: denver city council recently strengthened the ordinance requiring the denver police turn over records in a timely manner. alex of the denver justice products says he would also like to see the office of independent monitor be given investigative authority and a bigger budget. he would also like the public

office. the denver sheriff says he will not tolerate excessive force and he has fired three deputies ingests two weeks. theyll worked at the downtown detention center. this adams county deputy in that up behind bars, police arrested him earlier this month on charges of domestic violencee arrest reports rel ground and slammed her head to the floor. he is not administratively. and online petition to impeach a judge involved in a high-profile rape case worlds. the judge sentenced the man to work release and 20 years probation. advocates call that a slap on the risk thing the only way to get rid of the guys -- judges through impeachment.

while asking us for help. she sent us this video of residence shoveling out trash from their government subsidized apartment building in denver. trash pile so high the smell is making people sick. they say management just wouldn't listen. but when we started at the -- started asking questions we got quick actions.>>reporter: smell was nauseating. you can see where this dumpster is overflowing, that was all trash that they moved outside after we started making calls. you can see they is still quite an issue. you have mattresses and furniture piled up. people who live. say they are cries for help have gone unheard. people living in courthouse sq., apartments and outside today to escape the smell.>> it smells like a dead body. >>reporter: inside, they show us the trash room.

the third floor, but this weekend it as worse. this cell phone video showing residents shoveling trash out of the rooms themselves because of the smell. >> this was filled up to the fifth floor on the weekend. >>reporter: people here tell us order is in their only concern. >> someone throws a cigarette bobbed -- cigarette butt in there and it is up in flames.>>reporter: second floor flies are everywhere and roaches. >> how would you like to live here or have your mother living here? >>reporter: she tells us management is usually out to lunch so we tried calling. we even went to the denver office not long after we started investigating a group of men showed up. and cleaned out the trash room, something people living here

our son caleb was born with a rare form of cystic fibrosis. it means every day mucus builds up on his lungs, making it very hard for caleb to breathe. doctors told us that caleb's life expectancy was about 35 years of age. but then a new medication was invented that not only treated the symptoms of cystic fibrosis, but targeted the disease. the only problem was is that it wasn't approved to be used in the united states. but michael bennet changed that. michael bennet wrote a law to get medicine and treatments approved quicker. caleb just celebrated 5 years being hospital-free. he doesn't have to think about his disease every day. as a mom, michael bennet gave me a future with my son. i'm able to see him in the future getting married, graduating from college. those were dreams that we hoped for, but now i see them as a reality. i feel very fortunate to have somebody representing us

and that is part one of our special series. the city council will meet wednesday to discuss the affordable housing project. imagine fighting a massive wildfire and spotting this..it happened yesterday. it reached more than 36,000 acres and is 44% contained. firefighters did not expect to have that number up until the end of october. nice to see a little moisture out there to help. we have a few showers around us. some of those came down onto the plains moving into the denver area this afternoon. for the most part, just a spin of rank, gusty winds and a couple rumbles of thunder. this is what it looks like right now. you can see that activity off to the east. none of it has been severe today.

over but we've got news on what's going on with some of team usa when they return home from rio. on "the top of the list," post-olympic pandemonium is number one. team usa going from rio to your breakfast table. special k is kicking wheaties to the curb in order to feature the final five on the gold medal edition of special k red berry. and how about michael phelps. >> it's the end of my career, it's the start of something new. that's something i look forward to. >> the winner of 23 gold medals will be heading to arizona state university where he'll be an assistant coach for their swim and dive team. wait, assistant? so the coach is somehow better than fell s? looks like every one of the olympic swimmers just found their new school of choice. >> the interest that people have in swimming and asu program, it's insane. another sport, soccer.
