are learning about the company behind that dangerous ride. and rough night in rio. american superstar allyson felix. >> it will be tight. it will be a dive! >> beat by a photo finish. her competitor grabbing her gold with a dive over the line and in the gym, laurie hernandez snags a silver but simone biles slips on the beam. >> oh, boy. >> settling for bronze and we go one-on-one with michael phelps this morning. we ask is he really retiring, about fatherhood and he reveals the secret inside his shoe. we're live in rio with team usa. >> good morning, america. >> announcer: live in times square and rio de janeiro, this is "good morning america." that was allyson felix saying good morning to america. big night at the olympics again, the moment so many people are talking about, that photo finish on the track, david. >> i wouldn't have lost all
7:02 am
>> team usa's allyson felix considered a favorite but she was denied gold by a dive there. the world debating that silver medal this morning. felix still breaking an olympics record becoming the most decorated american woman in olympic track history. >> first to that deadly flooding in louisiana. thousands in shelters this morning, homes destroyed as rivers are on the rise. ginger will have more on where e a moment but first let's go to abc's rob marciano on the scene in livingston parish. good morning, rob. >> reporter: good morning, robin. beyond the flooded homes and neighborhoods, it's nearly impossible to get around. the good news this morning is that i-12 finally opened. the bad news is you can't get off it because the ramps and neighborhoods are still inundated with water, they're still flooded out and abandoned
7:03 am
here towns just downstream are seeing the rising water right now. overnight, fear and evacuations in sorrento, louisiana. people with boats searching in the middle of the night for neighbors who might still be trapped. the mayor saying all 1500 residents of the town will be impacted. >> we're not going to give up. we'll stay till the bloody end and if knocks us down we'll get back up and we're going to rebuild. >> reporter: the water at six times the normal level and still rising. many people spent the nit sandbagging hoping to save their homes. parts of louisiana being declared federal disaster areas and from the sky we saw just how hard it is to spot dry land. there are so many neighborhoods under water, even from the air you can't tell where the actual river should be. this remember rising 17 feet higher than flood levels after a staggering amount of rainfall. 30 inches in less than three days. >> my everything is going to damaged so i need help. i lost everything.
7:04 am
the national guard alone pulling more than 7600 people to safety. emergency shelters packed with over 12,000 people now homeless and that number expected to grow. even as waters recede, major roads still shut down. and that includes interstate 10, which is still shut down in spots. a sad statistic is that with all these homes and businesses flooded, less than 20% of them have flood insurance. the volunteer effort has been remarkable. seems like anybody with a boat has come in to help. so many volunteer boats, robin, they're being called the cajun navy. >> the volunteer cajun navy, you got that right, thank you. the weather system now on the move and northeast facing severe weather threats today and, ginger, you have more on that. >> right, and so all they need in places like louisiana is a half inch of rain and you see more flash flooding so we still have alerts there. back into san antonio flash flood watches. all that tropical moisture still
7:05 am
seven inches of rain. their wettest calendar on record ever and this morning flash flood watches that include detroit and flint. with all that energy that same low came a tornado near indianapolis and that energy is now moving to the north and east today so along i-80 in parts of new england you have a tornado threat along with damaging wind and hail. you can see where that large yellow area stretches from boston to philadelphia back to pittsburgh, all this afternoon and evening. i'll be detailing more in a couple minutes. >> all right, see you in just a few minutes. now to another natural disaster that out of control fire in northern california. a man now under arrest this morning accused of arson. sparking a blaze that's burned 4,000 acres and destroyed nearly 200 homes. abc's mary bruce is in the hard hit lower lake, california, this morning. mash mary, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, david. this is what most streets here look like, graveyards of smoldering personal belongings and scorched out cars but authorities believe the man responsible for this is

7:07 am
>> there was nothing i could do just a wall of flame. >> reporter: neighbors checking on homes. reisha spitler giving her friend the heartbreaking news. >> i'm really sad about this. her beautiful homestead so it's really hard. >> reporter: the unprecedented fire fueled by bone dry conditions and gusty winds. >> we're looking at fire conditions we haven't really seen before. it's going to be burning for another few days. >> reporter: now firefighters here are still battling this blaze from the air and the ground but this community fears there could be even more devastation still to come. robin. >> okay, m now to the race for the white house. donald trump talking tough about terror giving a major speech on monday outlining his plans for fighting extremism as hillary clinton and vice president biden team up to take on trump. abc's tom llamas is on the campaign trail. he's in pittsburgh this morning. good morning, tom. >> reporter: robin, good morning to you. as they try to maintain the peace in milwaukee, donald trump is headed there tonight where tensions are very high. law and order a big theme of his
7:08 am

7:09 am
the most dangerous and volatile regions of the world that have a history of exporting terrorism. >> reporter: and trump says he's the man for the job because hillary clinton is too unhealthy to take on terrorists. >> she also lacks the mental and physical stamina to take on isis. >> reporter: trump not providing any proof on that point as clinton herself dismissed trump's call to action. >> sometimes he says he won't tell anyone what he'll do because he wants to keep his plan, quote, secret. and then it turns out the secret is he has no plan. >> reporter: clinton on the trail for the first time with vice president joe biden, the vice president embracing clinton and not letting go for 17 seconds. then taking the fight right to trump. >> this guy doesn't care about the middle class. and i don't even blame him in a sense because he doesn't understand it. he doesn't have a clue. no, i mean he really doesn't.
7:10 am
>> reporter: now, as is tradition in general elections the clinton campaign this morning announcing their white house transition team, it will be led by former interior secretary ken salazar and he will plan and prepare for a potential clinton/kaine administration. governor chris christie still leading that effort for donald trump. david. >> tom, we appreciate it. let's get right to our chief white house correspondent, jonathan karl first, donald trump called for in his words extreme vetting of immigrants. a questionnaire with an ideological test but did we hear how it would be enforced or specific question, how they would be different from the questions already asked now? >> reporter: david, first, thgs the first time i've seen a candidate use the word extreme in an effort to provide a more moderate position, more moderate than his muslim ban, but no, there were precious few details about what questions would be asked. the basic idea here is to only allow in immigrants who share
7:11 am
there's also no detail about what would happen or what would prevent a potential terrorist from simply lying on that questionnaire. >> and bigger picture here, jon, as you know obviously this was an attempt at a major reset for donald trump after a rough week, trump's comments about second amendment people and what they could do among other things. we've seen these resets before. will this one stick? >> reporter: the republicans i spoke to were thrilled to see him stick to the script here. nobody's predicting it will last, but, david, the problem for trump is he's kind of like a football team that's been down by a couple of touchdowns because they've thrown interceptions, fumbles. it's not enough to prevent mistakes from happening. he needs to actually score some points now. >> jonathan karl with us this morning, our thanks to you as always as well. >> now to milwaukee onfollowing protests. the city enforcing a curfew overnight hoping to calm tensions after the shooting death involving a police officer. abc's eva pilgrim has the latest. >> reporter: this morning, a
7:12 am
crackdown to stop the raging protests against police, the neighborhood that was set on fire closing from dusk till dawn under a strictly enforced curfew. >> we've got to maintain the peace. >> reporter: the spark that ignited two nights of chaos and violence, the traffic stop of sylville smith, police say he was in a suspicious vehicle, the officer in that stop also black, shooting and killing smith. authorities say that police officer was wearing a body camera which they say will prove smith was holding a gun. >> i want the video released. a lot of context as to what's going on. >> reporter: however, the wisconsin department of justice now holding up the release of that video saying they are working expeditiously but are not prepared to release any of the video evidence at this time. >> i think it would be a measure of good faith to release the video because it would clearly show what happened and that's what's allowing a lot of things to fester. >> reporter: the tension leading
7:13 am
two teens hit by bullets in the chaos. >> gunfire, shots fired. >> reporter: 11 officers wounded as bricks were thrown by protesters. >> this is the police. leave the area! >> reporter: for smith's family and the community here, unanswered questions and a lot of pain. and the curfew just lifted here just a short time ago. you can see police taking no chances overnight putting up this fence around the park, people here thankful for a peaceful night. david. continued calm there, eva, thanks very much. we turn now to the olympics this morning and team usa's allyson felix sprinting into the record books becoming the most decorated track and field star of alt time but everybody is talking about this. missing gold after that dive, let's get right to t.j. at the olympics desk. how could this be? >> yeah, we saw a brand-new olympic sport last night that combines two sports, track and field and diving. yes, this track dive we saw last
7:14 am
dramatic moments we have seen at these olympics. the other dramatic moment we saw yesterday, simone biles almost fell off the balance beam but she still ended up on the medal stand. a photo finish in rio. >> here's allyson felix. >> reporter: in the women's 400-meter, the favorite, american allyson felix, in her fourth and likely final with a heart-stopping finish. >> felix alongside -- >> reporter: felix came behind and had gold within her grasp. >> here comes the finish line. >> reporter: the sprinted ended with a photo finish. >> a dive by miller for the line. >> reporter: the bahamas' shaunae miller diving her way across the line for gold, edging out felix by .7 seconds. >> these two battling, and it came down to the dive. >> reporter: that dive got swift reaction many questioning the tactic. the team usa star had to settle

7:16 am
wildfires burned just ten miles from rio's field hockey arena. >> because of the wind you see divers falling off the board. >> reporter: and strong winds plagued sailing and men's diving. as far as that dive on the track goes, it's perfectly legal. you have to remember, guys, not just what some part of the body crosses first, it has to be the torso. that's why you see sprinters do that to get across the finish line but it's perfectly legal. too bad the american missed out. >> it lit up twitter last night, about that. thank you, t.j. joining us with more of the events, olympic gold medallist dominique dawes is back with us. let's start with simone first. a rare misstep on the beam but still managed to be on the podium. >> you know, her routines are pretty difficult to do and that's why she was able to get on the podium with nearly a fall on the balance beam. a huge deduction but she doesn't care she got a bronze, more concerned about the fact that she made that mistake because that wasn't part of her game plan.
7:17 am
know, grateful for winning the bronze and grateful for her teammate being there and she's going to have another chance tonight. >> they are truly teammates and competing versus aly, the olympic reigning champion on this event, the floor exercise so they'll be neck and neck till the finish. >> love to see that camaraderie, how genuine it is. >> i love it. >> let's talk about the dive. i know it's not your sport. >> i know. >> t.j. said combined two sports, diving and track and field and people thought, can't beru >> shaunae miller knows that this is her olympic moment and if she feels as if she's running out of gas at the end and she needs to dive across that finish line, that's what you do. i love the sport of track and field because at the end of the day you have a stop watch. no one judging so she knew that was going to be her best chance to get a gold medal and beat allyson felix. >> by any means necessary. >> you'll be a judge for our "gma" games later. >> i am. very excited about that. >> you'll be fair. >> i'm going to be very fair. >> impartial. >> someone might be paying me
7:18 am
>> jesse cannot be bought off. he's going to tell us about the medal count now. >> dominique was deducting people early last week at the beginning of the games so i have some cash later on today. team usa continues its reign atop the olympic medal count leaderboard. 26 gold medals right now. 75 total medals followed by china, great britain, russia and japan. but now i've got to show you the photo that has gone viral. check this out. that's usain bolt. he is about to cross the finish line pulling away as he wins the men's 100-meter dash and the world's fastest man so far ahead he had time for this beaming smile, look at that, smiling all the way into the record books and to the bank. like the road runner and, beep, beep, sticks his tongue out and takes off. it's good to be usain bolt right now. >> i love that. take the shot. take the shot. all right. let's get right back over to ginger. a lot of extreme weather. >> i got to do a usain bolt weather.

8:15 am
comes out of a very well respected peer review journal. we're talking about one of the most commonly used medications acetaminophen that's used in pregnancy and this study found women who took it while they were pregnant went on to have children who were at increased risk for problems with conduct, hyperactivity and emotional issues. now, issues and flaws and limitations with this study. there is no data about why these women took acetaminophen in pregnancy. there's a thinking that the reason that caused them to need to take the medication could be implicated here. no data on how much they took, the dose or for how long, so more research definitely needed. >> yeah, because some doctors are saying they need a little bit more on that. so why would a pregnant woman take this? >> look, i think we have to remember that in obstetrics we have two patients here, a mother and a baby and so there can be maternal and fetal indications. pain, you're talking about anything from a headache to a
8:16 am
there's a spectrum there. fever, we know if the mother gets a fever, that is not good for a developing baby, so that could be a fetal reason, and then injury and surgery. that happens to pregnant women just like it happens to nonpregnant women so you have to weigh those. >> you've delivered, what, something like 1500 babies so you know of what you speak. so what do you recommend to your patients if they're having issues? >> this is so important. yesterday i was in touch with our national society and they came out very strongly against this study right now saying that this study and others in the past show no clear evidence that provides a direct relationship between acetaminophen and any behavioral problems. we say it over and over again on abc because it's so important. association does not equal causation. we need to have the science and the biology to show a cause and effect before we make a sweeping recommendation and right now women should not be afraid to take this if they really need it. >> are there other things that they can do if they're having certain issues? >> you know, that's the

i think what i noble and actually -- what you do seems pretty easy to me. oh, that's not in anymore. that jacket is out. >> men and women are so different. is why. >> that is the hilarious amy schumer squaring off with wintour comparing jobs when she shot her cover for the magazine and happy to have the actress, the comedienne and now author, amy schumer here. >> thank you. >> her highly anticipated book, "the girl with the lower back tattoo" out today. >> out today. >> i got an advance copy. whoo. i'm halfway through, read it by the pool this weekend. it's very much your voice. >> yes, it is. >> ooh. >> you lost your earring. >> you're getting up. >> is that okay?
8:31 am
>> no, but i'm keeping it. >> i'll go with the pirate look. you said it's not an autobiography, not a self-help but collection of your stories and things you have gone through. seems like you really enjoyed putting this together. >> i did. i've been keeping journals from age 13 to 23 and so it was really kind of crazy to go back and read them and so i took some of them and i use excerpts from them in the book with footnotes of reflection and so it was a little painful because it's embarrassing to read your thoughts as a teenager, but it >> i thought that was very creative and it made me think because i've kept journals over the years and i thought what would myself say looking back. >> right. >> and that's what you did. >> that's what i did and, yeah, it's pretty humiliating. you're like a little self-obsessed teenager but, i've been working on it for almost five years and i'm really proud of it. i can't believe it's out. >> because it really as i said it's your voice and it's very
8:32 am
>> you tell a lot of different -- i love the one-night stand. if you're going to have a one-night stand, that's the one to have. >> that's the one to have, right? don't worry. everyone is very nervous. they're like, listen, amy, it's early. >> we got kids. >> "good morning america." >> nothing, don't worry. you're in good hands. >> she picked up my earring. she's a girlfriend. >> i did try to keep it. >> from a young age you knew you wanted to do this. i love these -- when you put out on these videos these throwback videos. >> oh, gosh. mitzvah. >> look at me. >> at your bat mitza. >> i look like don rickles. i don't know how people told me i was cute. my bat mitzvah. >> burt -- but that's when you knew. >> i knew when i was five doing plays. i did "sound of music" and would come out and everybody would laugh and i would get upset but it was explained to me, no, it's good when you make people laugh. it means you make them happy so at age 5 i understood these
8:33 am
stl dance like that. >> you still bust a move like that? >> i still drop it like it's hot like that. >> you know what, i'm really looking forward to, the movie with goldie hawn. >> oh. >> you've been filming in hawaii. >> yeah. we just wrapped. >> you had to pull her into this. she wasn't sure. >> oh, yeah. >> how did you convince her? >> i just kept annoying her. about a year -- two years ago, i ran into her on a plane and at the end of the flight i went ov i'm a comedienne and actor and i really want to make this movie with you. she's like, okay, honey. she's so sweet. she'll talk to anyone for like two hours u but then she just thought i was crazy. and then, you know, we kept running into each other and she's like -- i haven't done a movie in 14 years, she said. this is the movie to do. we just had the best time. >> i bet you did. >> yeah, she's amazing. >> we cannot wait for that. >> thank you. >> hey, congratulations on all

hilarious but there's one -- they're funny but one that i want to ask you. >> okay. >> it is from -- >> i wrote one. did you see? i wrote one. >> you did? >> i said, you should ask me if i want to borrow some money. and, yes, i do. >> i thought that was a fake post. >> that's me and i've fallen on hard times. until this book clears i needed some loot. help a sister out. >> i cannot find the one from >> chris tweeted a question? >> he said something you had done a movie, you've done comedy. >> yeah. >> so next thing is a fragrance, what would you name it? >> don't ask me that and i'm supposed to not get in trouble? >> that's true. that's true. >> well, it would have to be a

will willow. >> okay, so close. >> you did this to yourself, robin. >> we were right there. >> it's a flower. >> amy schumer, ladies and gentlemen. the morning version of amy schumer. i'm telling you, and can i just say heartfelt. the way you talk about your day and your family and sister, it really shows -- >> coming from you it means a lot. >> i'm pulling for you. "the girl with the lower back tattoo," it is out now, run and get it. let's go outside to ginger. >> amy schumer, i love you. so we wanted to say a very good morning to our crowd. i'm fanning will. >> charlotte. >> charlotte, north carolina, he's 14 and he's running his mom ragged this morning. he wants to see the whole city. you're about to. the storms don't come till later this afternoon. look at this video of a fire whirl. this is in oregon. this happens in some of these wildfires where that cold air meets the warmth and the fire and just twirls right up. yes, they're dangerous but look at the red flag warnings still in place, excessive heat warnings that go all the way to the mexican border. that's the big picture.
8:37 am
>> all that weather brought to you by fruit of the loom and exciting we've got a new edition of our digital series "food forecast." you're about to see this video, the second part of napa valley wine and i'm walking through the owner there of a dry farm. that means zero irrigation. so he's beaten the drought no matter what even though most has been south and east of them. "food forecast" is streaming now on abcnews.com or the abc news app on your smartphone tablet or connected devices so that's hot but you know what else is hot, mara schiavocampo. and this story we're going to have a way to help you handle all this heat, shorts at the office. come on. one of the trendiest looks on the runway. can it work, mara? >> well, the answer is, yes, it can work.
8:38 am
creative industries tend to have a little bit more flexibility but you can beat the heat and stay professional. you also have to make sure that your shorts are workplace friendly. ah, shorts. they're the summertime staple. we've seen celebs rock them on the red carpet but can you wear them to work? lori bergamotto, style director at "good housekeeping" magazine says yes. can you really wear shorts to the office? >> you absolutely can wear for the most part the workplace is really evolving and we're seeing this shift towards a more casual environment. >> to show us how to pull off the look, we hit up their fashion closet. first up, sophie in a pleated striped skort. >> built-in shorts as you see in the pleats. this is a really good look for someone who has a body type like sophie. sophie is not particularly short. she's not particularly tall
8:39 am
proportion and a really good way to do that is with an a-line silhouette. >> are there any rules for the fabric? >> choose a fabric that's more synthetic and hastructure to it. nothing that's transparent. anything that's too flimsy in nature is going to look wrinkled and going to look less professional. >> next up, sara in a pair of silk tie front shorts. >> if you're petite like sara is, you're looking for something that has a little tiny bit more volume. kinds of shorts will work? >> a good rule of thumb is to actually follow your thumbs if you will. her longest finger is in line with the hem length of the short. if it's any shorter than that, you probably don't want to wear them to work. >> and finally, chisom rocking a more formal short suit. >> she's in our tall category. think about the equation of how much skin you're baring. she's covered down to her wrists so she can show a little bit more skin on her legs.
8:40 am
professional enough? >> you want to make sure you're marrying them with statement pieces that really feel like they're ready for the workplace. the studded earrings, top handle bag and a nice work watch that has some gravity to it. really let the shorts stay. >> now, what shoes you wear with your shorts are also going to be really important. make sure that the heel isn't too high or might look like you're headed to the club and not the office. never a good thing. opt for a chunkier heel instead of a stiletto. keeps it a little more conservative. >> i'm kind of a skirt girl but might get me here, lori bergamotto. >> a skort. >> yes, a skort. the style director of "good housekeeping" here. these are for the office? >> they really are. we dressed mara. doesn't she look beautiful? >> you did a great job. >> we kept her in a balance and wanted balance and showing a little leg and keep everything covered up. >> not just for women. >> not just for women. >> we have a special model
8:41 am
>> oh, wow. >> our favorite men. how about that on jesse. this is all from j. crew. what we did with jesse is it's really the same rules. want to make sure you're not showing more than two to three inches on the knee. you can see his knee got a nice tight shot. >> this would not be okay. >> not too much. >> we gave him a little texture with the shirt, a pop of color with the pocket square and elevated it with a summer weight suit jacket. >> any rules for manscaping if you show all this leg? just be natural. >> i appreciate this. >> i appreciate it too. >> i think you're doing a good job. >> i came au naturel. >> it's all about just the fabric that you're looking for in a short, making sure there's structure and not too short. you don't want to look like you're a von trapp family singer or going to hogwarts. >> i got to say i like the look. i think that this should be the closing ceremonies outfit for bermuda at the olympics.
8:42 am
works for everyone. the september issue of "good housekeeping" is on newsstands now and bermuda too. coming up, we're going to meet our ultimate hes. the family stepping in to a huge way to help out a teen. our big surprise for them. stick around. prise for them. stick around. david was proud to be an american soldier. and i know i'm prejudiced because he was my son, but i don't think he had a mean bone in his body. there is not a day that i don't think about david. when i saw donald trump attack another gold star mother, i felt such a sense of outrage. "she was standing there, she had nothing to say..." if donald trump cannot respect a gold star family, then why would anyone in america think he would respect them.
