person. >> marines are tough, demanding. but those under investigation at paris island are accused of a shocking degree of abuse. one muslim marine recruit recounting how he was ordered soaking wet into a large, hot clothes dryer in 2015 and asked if he was part of 9/11. the marine says the dryer was run multiple times and his neck and shoulders burned as he according to the marine, one of the two drill instructors then asked if he was still a muslim. he says when he responded yes, the dryer was run a fourth time. one marine official said it was one of those same drill instructors who this year forcefully slapped another marine, raheel sadiki who was sick and struggling.

death from a stairwell. his death was ruled a suicide by the marine corps and his family disputes that. penn state is under fire this morning for a controversial celebration planned for tomorrow's football game. the university is using the game against temple to mark the 50th anniversary of former coach paterno's first win at the school. a series of videos celebrating paterno's career will be shown at the game, but this shouldn't happen given allegations that paterno helped cover up jerry sandusky's scandal. week two of the nfl season is now under way. it got started with a heaping load of office thanks to the jets and the bills. the scar was matt forte, not bad, scoring a short touchdown there in the second quarter. then forte gave the jets the lead for good. that is late in the third. he tacked on another one just

civilian in aleppo. meanwhile, the government blames assad for blocking needed humanitarian aid. in germany now, where a group of extremists and young refugees clashed. at least 80 germans and 20 refugees attacked each other in a town near the polish border. officers were attacked with wooden sticks and bottles by the asylum seekers. police say the extremists were drunk. it's unclear who started it, but the town has been plagued by racist incidents. samsung's new smartphone now facing recalls. the safety commission ordered the company to pull 1 million 7s worldwide with 90 reports of damage from overheated phones in the u.s. the faa warned air travelers not to use note 7s on planes. >> because this product presents such a serious fire hazard, i'm urging all consumers, all consumers to take advantage of this recall right away.

phones will be in stores by next wednesday. the head of samsung america has apologized saying the company did not meet the standard of excellence customers deserved. in new york city, police opened fire on a man wielding a meat cleaver. place say the suspect attacked when won fronted and trying to remove a boot from his car. the officer slashed in the face, and the suspect was shot several times. >> reporter: a terrifying scene in the heart of new york city's midtown area, leaving three officers injured. police swarming the area after 5:00 p.m., rush hour, sirens blaring. >> suspect has been identified as j-o-d-u-e-h. >> reporter: after an officer spotted the suspect armed with a meat cleaver on 32nd street, blocks from penn station and madison square garden. officers chased the man for

the officers first discharging their tasers, then opening fire. the suspect struck. police surrounding the ambulance and placing someone on a stretcher. the aerials show a usually bustling street brought to a stand still, tourists, commuters stopped by barricades on all sides while officers investigate. one officer suffered a laceration to the head, another of have been taken to the hospital and are expected to be okay. the suspect was also taken to the same hospital and learned the suspect is in critical condition. we're learning the suspect has been arrested at least a dozen times. no doubt, this is just the start of the investigation here in midtown, manhattan. gio benitos, abc news, new york. the navy's out with the cause of a fatal blue angel crash from june. it happened in tennessee. navy's report on the incident says it was pilot error. it says the pilot lost control of his fighter because he was flying too fast and was too low to the ground for the maneuver

pilot fatigue and cloudy weather are mentioned as factors in the crash. and the bus driver in this incident has reportedly been fired. now take a look. the bus was recorded on a new jersey road driving behind a truck when the bus goes to pass the truck, the fedex driver swerves forcing the bus into the opposing lanes. luckily, no cars were coming that direction, and there were no kids on board we should note. fedex says the driver's actions are being reviewed as well. u.s. soccer star megan rapinoe may be reviewed for her protest. this is the first time she's shown support for kaepernick's stance against racial injustice in an international match. afterwards, u.s. soccer issued a statement reading in part, as part of the privilege to represent your country, we have an expectation that our players and coaches will stand and honor our flagging while the national

problem on its own, made a deal with the u.s. government. >> we're announcing the official recall. >> reporter: nearly a million phones in the u.s. are affected after 92 reports of overheating, 26 people burned, 55 pieces of property damaged, including cars and a garage, as part of the official recall and greed to offer a refund after first offering only an exchange. only 130,000 of the note 7s in the u.s. have been exchanged, which means there are more than 8000 and the federal government worried about ion batteries on aircraft, says the only one one can be taken on board is if it's shut off and disconnected from a charger, but airlines could decide to ban them entirely and subway systems warn against them too. samsung says it was only the note 7 with the defective battery, but reports of other galaxy phones of overheating,
