several things from e-mails to tax returns. abc's stephanie ramos is at hofstra university on long island, new york, where it all went down. stephanie, good morning. >> reporter: kendis and diane, good morning. this may have been the highest rated reality show ever. hillary clinton and donald trump disagreeing over race, jobs, terrorism and temperament. the candidates, hillary clinton and donald trump, walking out on the debate stage shaking hands and taking a fighting stance. their first general election face-off turning contentious and personal quick. >> i have a feeling that by the end of this evening, i'm going to be blamed for everything that's ever happened. >> why not. >> why not, yeah, why not. >> reporter: it was a spirited debate full of interruptions. >> donald, i know you live in your own reality but that is not the facts. >> but you have no plan. >> oh, i do. >> reporter: slamming each other on issues like climate change, trade, to stop and
4:02 am
>> the argument, it's a form of racial profileing. >> no, the argument is that we have to take the guns away from these people that have them and that are bad people that shouldn't have them. >> stop and frisk was found to be unconstitutional and in part because it was ineffective. >> reporter: trump continuing to blast clinton on her stamina and strength but clinton shutting down that line of attack. >> well, as soon as he travels to 112 countries and negottes a peace deal, a cease-fire, a release of dissidents, an opening of new opportunities and nations around the world or even spends 11 hours testifying in front of a congressional committee, he can talk to me about stamina. >> reporter: this marked the first time both clinton and trump shared the same stage side by side as they try to prove to voters they're the best person to lead the country. >> you decided to stay home and that's okay. >> i think donald just

this debate, and, yes, i did, and you know what else i prepared for, i prepared to be president, and i think that's a good thing. [ applause ] >> reporter: one debate down and two more to go. the second presidential debate between hillary clinton and donald trump is set for october 9th in st. louis, missouri. kendis, diane. >> and, stephanie, what were campaigns saying after the debate in the spin room? >> reporter: so right after the debate some campaign aides for the clinton camp came into the spin room d holding back on how they thought the debate went last night saying that donald trump was unhinged. they called him unhinged during the debate and they also said that he was easily provoked as well as totally unprepared. senior campaign officials felt trump was quickly rattled, even more than they expected him to be. >> and normally you have those
4:04 am
the spin room, not normally that you have a presidential candidate himself, but trump talked about what he said he didn't address on stage right there in the spin room. what's that all about? >> reporter: yeah, kendis, and you said it. this is something we haven't seen before, but it's been an unconventional convention. donald trump walking into the spin room last night and telling abc news he didn't bring up bill clinton's infidelities because he says chelsea clinton was in the debate hall last night. but here's what trump had to say last night in the spin room right after the debate. here it is. >> i thought it was great. i mean, i got everything i wanted to say, i got it out other than the transgressions of bill because, you know, she takes all these commercials spending literally hundreds of millions of dollars on commercials and they're lies. they're lies. but i thought -- and i didn't want to do it with chelsea who i think is a very wonderful young lady. i didn't want to say what i was going to say with chelsea in the room. >> reporter: unclear if a sign that trump -- about how trump felt he did last night, a

he was supposed to go to last night he opted out of. back over to you, guys. >> oh, well, that's pretty controversial there, and hillary clinton did go to a rally right afterwards. stephanie ramos in hampstead, new york, this morning. stephanie, thank you. and early polls do indicate that most voters believe hillary clinton won that debate. >> but reaction was mixed across the country with many people sticking with the same candidate that they supported ahead of the debate. >> it's obvious that hillary won that debate. i think that trump was a liar and a person that is trying to divide >> unfortunately, i thought she was very robotic. donald was very appealing, a man of action, real, definitely came across as a change agent. >> flat out she won. i mean, unbelievable. trump had everything to say wrong. he was so nervous, he was scripted. he wasn't as talented as he said he was. >> the reaction from many voters who watched the debate but those people already had the
4:06 am
going into it, and as you saw there in stephanie's piece from the beginning trump and clinton dropped the pleasantries and came out swinging. >> so just how did each candidate fare according to the analysts? well, for more on that, let's turn to abc news political director rick klein. rick. >> diane and kendis, a tale of two donald trumps. in the first half of the debate, he was able to parry the attacks from hillary clinton and turn them back on her, make it about the broader argument around the status quo turning all of her attacks into an attack on the political establishment. that was the good side from the bad side coming out later in the debate when she's -- he ends up feuding with her over her fitness for the office, her look for the office, and just, generally speaking, you saw a candidate for whom is able to get under the skin. and i think hillary clinton is able to walk away from this debate saying i know where the weak spots are. i know how to prosecute the case. donald trump on particularly shaky ground when he talked about the birther movement or when he talked about what he said in the past about the iraq war, a false claim that he always opposed the iraq war.
4:07 am
over and over again. i think two candidates showing that they know how to prosecute the case. no one, though, closing the deal. diane and kendis. >> all right, our thanks to rick klein there. well, hillary clinton is calling the debate an amazing experience. >> shortly after getting off the stage, she stopped by a nearby debate watch party with her husband greeting more than 500 supporters with her hands in the air. >> now, clinton is campaigning in raleigh, north carolina, today, and this evening donald trump holds a rally in melbourne, florida. >> and he's alsoou his own performance on social media as well. meanwhile, there was another presidential candidate not at the debate. that was green party's dr. jill stein. she was escorted actually off hofstra's campus for not having the right security credentials. stein then took to twitter to get her message out. >> now, stephanie kind of mentioned earlier that clinton and trump's second debate is on sunday, october 9th. the vice presidential debate is october 4th. >> and stay tuned for "good morning america" for analysis of last night's showdown from our full political team.

...what we're building together... ...and could this happen again? i was given warfarin in the hospital, but wondered, was this the best treatment for me? i spoke to my doctor and she told me about eliquis. eliquis treats dvt and pe blood clots and reduces the risk of them happening again. not only does eliquis treat dvt and pe blood clots. but eliquis also had significantly less major bleeding than the standard treatment. knowing eliquis had both... ...turned around my thinking. eliquis can cause serious, and in rare cases, fatal bleeding. don't take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. if you had a spinal injection while on eliquis call your doctor right away if you have tingling, numbness, or muscle weakness. while taking eliquis, you may bruise more easily... and it may take longer than usual for bleeding to stop. seek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding, like unusual bruising. eliquis may increase your bleeding risk if you take certain medicines.

? it is time for "the pulse." and as you might expect, it is all about last night's presidential debate. >> yes, so hillary clinton and donald trump on stage for the first time. while many millions monitored the proceedings on social media so what moment got twitter going the most? >> coming in third the candidates' plans to defeat isis. trumps comments about the policing policy stop and frisk came in second, and the most tweeted moment of the night came when trump said he has a good temperament. >> so, apparently this was the most tweeted about debate ever. at the time during it 62% on twitter were tweeting about this debate. >> breaking records all around. and it's always interesting to see what kind of issues social
