to a hail mary. why this is one weekend college football fans will never forget. and good evening. thanks for joining us on this sunday. i'm tom llamas. and we begin with the race for the white house and a major development involving donald trump's taxes. the "new york times" obtaining information that donald trump claimed a loss of more than $900 million in 1995. potentially setting up years without paying income tax. as trump's supporters defend what they say is the candidate's genius, the clinton campaign is hitting trump hard. with the second presidential debate one week from tonight. mary bruce gets us started. >> reporter: tonight, an october surprise for donald trump. >> you don't learn that much from tax returns.

>> reporter: now we're learning donald trump could have paid no interest taxes for years. records sent by an anonymous tipster to the "new york times" show in 1995, trump reported a jaw-dropping $916 million loss, the apparent result of the collapse of his atlantic city casinos, his airline and the purchase of new york's plaza hotel. a loss so large, he could have legally avoided paying federal income taxes for up to 18 years, a strategy h about at last week's debate. >> maybe he doesn't want the american people, all of you watching tonight, that know that he's paid nothing in federal taxes. >> that makes me smart. >> reporter: tonight, trump's campaign isn't denying the report. trump himself tweeting, i know our complex tax laws better than

impacts to the u.s. are not out of the question. rob marciano with the storm path in a moment, but first, gio benitez. reporting tonight from jamaica. >> reporter: tonight, hurricane matthew barreling through the caribbean, shifting east, now taking direct aim on haiti. the massive storm packing 140 miles-per-hour winds, expected to trigger flooding and mudslides. this orphanage, boarding up. bracing for the worst. >> you can definitely tell that it's coming. >> reporter: heavy rain in colombia. and here in jamaica, they're battening down the hatches and stockpiling supplies. the first bands started rolling in just a half an hour ago. already, we've got serious flooding here. the monster storm, already deadly. killing a 16-year-old on the island of st. vincent as it slowly marches north. gaining strength.

could be the strongest hurricane to hit haiti in decades, a country still rebuilding after the devastating earthquake in 2010, and tropical storm isaac in 2012. but tonight, all of the caribbean islands are on high alert. from here in jamaica, all the way to the bahamas, the state department is urging all americans to get out now. before matthew hits. saying there's limited time for a safe departure. tom? >> gio, thank you. let's bring in rob marciano. >> it's been since the 1960s since a storm like this hit in haiti, and thousands died. so, a very dangerous situation. here's the storm, 145-mile-an-hour winds. here's a computer model showing landfall in western haiti, probably sometime tomorrow night. likely as a major category storm. likely with rainfall over 20 inches. here's the official track.

the bahamas. and by thursday and friday, it's abreast of the u.s. too soon to give the all-clear, but as of now, the cone of uncertainty is grazing the shorelines. we'll be watching it very, very closely throughout the week. tom? >> rob, thanks. next to an update about the deadly commuter train crash in new jersey. federal investigators releasing these photos of mangled wreckage inside the terminal. and revealing what the engineer said about what happened just before the crash. here's eva pilgrim. >> reporter: tonight, for the first time, the engineers account of what happened in the moments before that train full of commuters crashed into this platform, killing one person, injuring 114 others. >> he looked at his watch and noticed his train was about six minutes late arriving hoboken. he said that when he checked the speedometer, he was operating at ten miles per hour when entering the station track.

the 48-year-old engineer, says he has no memory of the accident. only waking up on the floor of can cab. and another setback in the search for answers, this event recorder recovered from the back of the train wasn't working. >> we want to get in and get the exact speed of the train. >> reporter: new jersey transit had been under investigation by the federal railroad administration for the past five years, finding 183 safety violations, some related to employee drug and alcohol use, and almost $5 million in damage to tracks and equipment. the train is required by law to have a working front event recorder so investigators are hopeful that front car will hold some much needed answers when they are able to get in there. tom? >> eva, thank you. next to the potential cyber threat that may cast a shadow over the upcoming election. will your vote count in november? here's pierre thomas. with the new warnings tonight. >> reporter: homeland security secretary jeh johnson

election officials in 21 states have requested help in blocking cyber-attacks. sources tell abc news that investigators believe the hacking has been tied to the highest levels of the russian government. >> we're doing an awful lot of work to understand just what mischief is russia up to in connection with our election. >> reporter: concerns mounting after abc news first reported this week that hackers believed to be tied to russia had targeted the voter registration computers of at least 20 states. russia with a cyber-attack of some sort, we could get into a spiral that would be a cyber-war. >> reporter: abc news has learned that in four cases, hackers actually got inside those voter registration databases and likely copied information about thousands of voters. >> potentially, the presidential election could be manipulated by an outside threat. i never thought i would live to see that day. >> reporter: while there's no

concern going forward. imagine a situation where there's a question about the eligibility of thousands of voters in a battleground state because of a hack. tom? >> pierre, thank you. next to a new arrest in an alleged murder for hire plot in florida. the suspect facing a murder charge for her role in the shooting of a professor. marci gonzalez with what police are saying tonight. >> reporter: tonight, this woman behind bars, charged with first gr connection to the killing of a prominent law professor at florida state university. the murder coming after his marriage to wendy adelson ended. >> the working theory of the case is that the reason for this homicide was due to the bitter divorce that was ongoing.

not been charged and deny any connection. >> even my family who felt like i'd been mistreated would never do something like this. never. >> reporter: but police allege that katherine mbanua, arrested saturday, is the link between the adelson family and the alleged hitmen. investigators claiming in this affidavit that she had past romantic relationships with one of the accused hitmen, as well as adelson's brother, charlie. the family telling abc news magbanua was an employee. police also hitmen's first call after the murder was to magbanua, her attorney telling us she has no prior convictions, and their priority is getting her out on bond. while tonight, police aren't saying whether there could still be more arrests. marci gonzalez, abc news, new york. >> we thank marci for that report. staying in florida, authorities confirming a new

now to the scary moments inside a school bus packed with students as it flipped over into a ditch. here's clayton sandell. >> reporter: tonight, new video of a terrifying, unscheduled stop for students on this houston area school bus. wa school kids go flying when their bus veers off the road, flipping onto its side. >> all units on scene, school bus rollover. multiple patients. >> reporter: 25-year veteran driver, brenda armster, briefly looks in the mirror to ask a question. >> does anybody get off here? >> reporter: in that split-second distraction, the school district says armster failed to see a truck stopped ahead making a left turn. >> are you okay? >> the bus started just gliding
