4:00 am
making news in america this morning, a final face-off. the presidential nominees were on stage together for the last time. >> the personal attacks overshadowing policy. >> mr. trump's -- >> i think he's unfit, and he proves it every time. >> no, you are the one that's unfit. such a nasty woman. >> a moment political experts are calling unprecedented. a challenge toward tradition in american democracy. >> do you make the same commitment that you will absolutely, sir, that you will absolutely accept the result of this election? >> i will look at it at the time. >> and russian president vladimir putin's unseen presence. >> he'd rather have a puppet as president. >> no puppet. no puppet. >> and it's pretty clear. >> you're the puppet. team coverage right now on the final debate with just 19
4:01 am
and a good thursday morning to you all. we begin with that final face-to-face showdown in the battle for the white house. >> hillary clinton, donald trump, they ditched the handshakes in las vegas last night before and after the debate. they presented drastically different views on policies and, yes, they sparred over their scdals. >> they also resorted to interruptions at times, mockery and name calling. abc's david wright has more. >> reporter: one final showdown. >> she should never have bee allowed to run for the presidency. >> reporter: the dustup in the desert. >> he's denigrating. he is talking down our democracy. >> reporter: las vegas, nevada, host of plenty of prize fights but not quite like this. >> such a nasty woman. >> reporter: clinton called trump a hypocrite on the issue of saving american jobs. >> in fact, the trump hotel right here in las vegas was made with chinese steel. >> i ask a simple question. she's been doing this for 30
4:02 am
why the hell didn't you do it over the last 15, 20 years? you were very much involved -- excuse me. my turn. >> reporter: trump questioned the value of her experience. >> you do have experience. i say the one thing you have over me is experience but it's bad experience because what you've done has turned out badly. >> we all know nine women have come forward and said that you either groped them or kissed them without their consent. >> first of all, those stories have been largely debunked. those people, i don't know those people. i have a feeling how they came campaign that did it. >> well -- >> secretary clinton. >> reporter: clinton hit back. >> he held a number of big rallies where he said that he could not possibly have done those things. >> nobody has more respect for women than i do, nobody. nobody has more respect. >> please, everybody. >> reporter: russian president vladimir putin -- >> he'd rather have a puppet as president of the united states. >> no puppet. no puppet.
4:03 am
>> reporter: trump and clinton debated abortion. sharp differences. >> i am pro-life and i will be appointing pro-life judges. >> i strongly support roe v. wade, which guarantees a constitutional right to a woman. >> reporter: on other issues they went straight for the jugular, immigration, for instance. >> when it comes to the wall that donald talks about building, he went to mexico, he had a meeting with the mexican president. didn't even raise it. he choked. >> we're going to secure the border, and once the border is secured, at a later date we'll make a determination as to the rest but we have some bad hombres here and we're going to get them out. >> reporter: trump tried to use leaked e-mails from clinton's own campaign manager against her. >> john podesta said you have terrible instincts. bernie sanders said you have bad judgment. i agree with both. >> reporter: an astonishing moment. trump refused to say if he will accept the results of the election. >> i will look at it at the time. i'm not looking at anything now. i will look at it at the time. >> are you saying you're not prepared now to -- >> what i'm saying, i will tell you at the time. i'll keep you in suspense.
4:04 am
to that because that's horrifying. >> reporter: trump accused clinton of conspiring with the media against him. >> she shouldn't be allowed to run. it's crook -- she's guilty of a very, very serious crime. she should not be allowed to run and just in that respect, i say it's rigged. >> reporter: clinton suggested trump is just a sore loser by nature. >> there was even a time when he didn't get an emmy for his tv he started tweeting that the emmys were rigged again. >> should have gotten it. >> this, this is a mind-set. this is how donald thinks. and it's funny but it's also really troubling. >> reporter: david wright, abc news, new york. >> who knew that the emmys would make the presidential debate. >> i know. i did know that was going to be a topic. >> quite interesting. >> by the way, we should mention that moments ago trump landed in ohio. he sent out a tweet
4:05 am
let's take a closer look at two of the biggest moments that are making headlines this morning. >> abc's maggie rulli is live in washington for us. maggie, let's start with trump refusing to say whether or not he would accept the election results. it's getting so much attention this morning. >> reporter: yeah, kendis and diane, that moment is being called unprecedented as historically the peaceful transition of power and the acceptance of election results is seen as a fundamental aspect of our constitution and democracy. overnight we heard democratic senator harry reid calling trump's comments horrifying. immediately after the debate rnc chair reince priebus said trump will accept the results and just two hours before the debate, trump's running mate also said they would accept the results. >> and, maggie, you know, for some time overnight the term bad hombres was a top trend on twitter. the general reaction to that right now? >> reporter: well, in spanish
4:06 am
way trump used the word, it could be interpreted as offensive or derogatory and we're hearing from latinos who say they were disgusted by trump using the word and as you mentioned overnight, that lit up social media becoming one of the most talked about moments from last night's debate, kendis and diane. >> all right, and they are scheduled to appear at an event again together. but no debate happening there. so, hopefully they will keep the peace. maggie rulli, live in washington for us, maggie, thank you. tonight.event in new york city after the debate clinton said she was both relieved and very grateful. >> but before heading back to new york she made a surprise appearance at a post-debate watch party. she was joined by her husband as well as 5,000 supporters who were cheering her on. >> we are a better country than donald trump is. [ cheers and applause ] there are so many, so many things he says and does that i
4:07 am
against those today. >> clinton's campaign is also calling trump's performance erratic saying he's a bad loser and doesn't respect the democratic process. >> well, before he landed in ohio, trump took to twitter describing the debate as exciting. he said he made all of his points and posted a poll that declared him the winner. his campaign manager, kellyanne conway, praised his performance while criticizing clinton's record. >> i didn't hear much new from her today. i saw a lot of defense, and i think tonight what dond all experience is good experience. if you've been there for 30 years and yet you have millions of people in poverty, you have millions of people with no health insurance, you have so much unfinished business. >> she also went on to tell our tom llamas there that donald trump will accept the results of the election because he's going to win. well, according to polls night, so the big question is did he get it? >> abc news political director rick klein tells us how the nominees stacked up. rick, good morning.
4:08 am
and he got it. it just was the wrong kind of moment for the campaign turnaround that he needs right now. a singular moment in debate history when he said he would not necessarily respect the election results. even his own campaign supporters are questioning that very aggressively. all in all, hillary clinton prosecuted the case against donald trump, needling him, prodding him much like that first debate and i think walking away with a more and concise victory than even at that exchange. hillary clinton able to make that case and leave donald trump in a flustered position when trying to explain his past comments and trying to explain his policy positions but overall this seemed like a debate in an election already that's kind of over. both candidates wary of each other and the name-calling at the end and donald trump walking away without the game changer that he needed. diane and kendis. >> thanks. >> twitter and facebook feeds were completely filled with debate moments. >> yeah, the moment that received the most tweets when trump discussed his treatment of women.
4:09 am
moderator chris wallace clashed on trump's statements on aleppo. >> and according to googlethe most searched question during the debate, what is roe versus wade? >> interesting, all right, and take a look at this photo tweeted out by a person on a virgin american flight. nearly every passenger with the debate on their screen. >> you got one straggler. one. >> one straggler there. the caption there, democracy. just gives you a sense how interested people are in this. >> yeah, everyone was watching. and we'll have the morning's other headlines next including the woman in her 60s who just plus, the ttle for mosul and the fight against isis moving into the next phase this morning. an update from the front lines.
