good morning, everybody. we've made it to friday. i'm kendis gibson. >> yes, happy friday to you. i'm adrienne bankert in for diane macedo. we begin with president-elect donald trump heaping praise on supporters wrapping up a day-long victory lap with a fiery rally in ohio. >> trump highlighting his agenda bragging about defeating hillary clinton and slamming the media. abc's janai norman is in washington, d.c. with details of what by all appearances was a presidential campaign event. good morning, janai. >> reporter: good morning, adrienne and kendis. so his first stop was in indiana to talk about saving jobs there, though he didn't save all the jobs the company carrier planned to ship to mexico, about 1,300 still being sent across the border. if the 17 days trump spent campaigning in ohio after clinching the nomination was the road show, this was the reunion. >> i love you, ohio. this is a great place. >> reporter: in cincinnati

million in tax incentives. trump saying he sent a very loud message to companies wanting to leave. >> there will be consequences meaning they will be taxed very heavily at the border if they want to leave, fire all their people, leave. >> reporter: and senator bernie sanders criticizing the deal saying carrier took trump hostage and won, adding the president-elect signaled to corporations they can now threaten to offshore jobs in exchange for tax incentives. kendis and adrienne. >> all right, janai norman live in washington, thank you so much. we'll be hearing more about the campaign rallies but donald trump also using this particular rally to make a big announcement revealing his pick to head the pentagon. >> trump says he's naming retired marine general james mattis as secretary of defense calling him the closest thing we have to george patton. a defense secretary, though, must be out of uniform for

he retired in 2013 so congress would have to waive that requirement in order to get him confirmed. one more note, new jersey governor chris christie may be interested in becoming the next chairman of the republican national committee. donald trump's transition team is reportedly encouraging christie to go for that job to replace reince priebus who will be the next white house chief of staff. now, the rnc role would put christie in a high-profile position, and it doesn't require confirmation from the senate. >> the trump campaign has filed an objection to the election recount in michigan delaying it instead state election officials will hear arguments from trump's attorneys including a claim that the petition was not properly signed. green party candidate jill stein who kicked off the recount called the objection shameful. recount efforts in wisconsin started yesterday. a long simmering feud between staffers from the clinton and trump presidential campaigns came to a boil overnight erupting in a war of words. >> this has been a very personal campaign season.

now we're expecting the highs near the norm for this time of year but they'll drop drastically. with gusty winds and feel like 10 to 15 degrees below the norm for this time of the year. for the weekend a double dose of high pressure that is going to literally stairstep the cold air from canada right across portions of the northeast. so it's going to dramatically change things, and the dry air is going to make it feel colder as well. adrienne, kendis. >> ooh, paul, thank you. it's like feel the brrr a massive cleap through parts of the south. more than 30 twisters confirmed in eight states. at least seven deaths have been reported, four in tennessee, three in alabama. gusty winds damaged homes and toppled trees knocking out power to thousands. and a miracle from the storm in tennessee. amber newman just days from her delivery date hid in her bathroom during the storm. her house tossed in the air and flipped several times before landing more than 200 feet away. rescue crews took her to the hospital where little ava was

church services, a charity bike ride and the dedication of a peace garden at a local pledge campus. the obama administration has come out in favor of having women register for the military draft. the white house says as more women become incorporated into the male dominated military, it only makes sense they should be required to register for the draft just as men do. the national christmas tree in washington is now officially lit. for the first time president obama threw the switch at the white house. it was his eighth time at the ceremony and the 94th ceremony overall. >> he was accompanied by first lady michelle obama and lady michelle obama and daughter sasha. performers at the the ceremony included james taylor, marc anthony, garth brooks and chance the rapper. a veritable melting pot of music. still ahead, he has an estimated net worth of more than $3 billion and now this ceo stepping down. and a former nfl player shot and killed during a traffic

well, it seemed like a beautiful nighttime launch and then went horribly wrong. within minutes this unmanned russian cargo spaceship exploded over siberia. the cargo craft was to deliver supplies including fuel, water and food to the international space station. the nfl this morning mourning the death of former running back joe mcknight shot and killed in what appears to be a case of road rage. investigators say mcknight was

when another driver opened fire. mcknight died at the scene. the shooter surrendering to police. mcknight played for the jets and chiefs and in college for usc. what could have been another tragic outcome in a long string of deadly school shootings ended with just one bullet fired and nobody injured. a 15-year-old boy walked into a classroom at his utah middle school armed with two guns and threatening students. amazingly the boy's own parents were the ones who disa police say they rushed to the school after noticing he was acting strangely. then realized he had broken into their gun safe. they fear he had taken the weapons to school. they were right. thankfully nobody was hurt. the teen is now in custody. hundreds attended vigils last night for a washington state police officer killed in the line of duty. jake gutierrez shot during a domestic violence call as he walked up the stairs to talk with the suspect.

>> keith papini says that he's still wrestling with the guilt of not being able to help his wife. his exclusive interview airs tonight on "20/20." a florida man is in custody after holding 11 people at gunpoint threatening to kill them inside a credit union. investigators say he walked into the jacksonville building with his dog demanding money after an incredibly tense standoff the s.w.a.t. team was able to rush in and rescue the frightened hostages. authorities in philadelphia are searching for a motive and a suspect after a bomb attack that left one man injured. the person who delivered the makeshift device was caught on camera and they're now trying to track him down. here's abc's linsey davis. >> reporter: this morning, philadelphia police, the fbi and the bureau of explosives are searching for this man, a person of interest who dropped off a package they say contained a homemade explosive device that left a man with serious injuries. >> this person did, in fact,

>> reporter: in this newly released surveillance video believed to be related t believed to be related to the package bombing incident last week, you can see the man put something on the doorstep and then casually walk down the treat for several blocks. police describe the man as possibly asian, late teens to early 30s, wearing a lumberjack elmer fudd style hat with ear flaps down and a baseball hat underneath. police have not yet found a motive but say the package was addressed to 60-year-old jim alden. in this photo from his hospital bed, you can see injuries from the shrapnel on his face, chest and arms. linsey davis, abc news, new york. a rhode island man is recovering after a horrific car crash that played out on social media. the man live streamed himself on facebook recklessly speeding through traffic at 115 miles an hour. of course, he lost control. this is along route 6 plowing into the back of a garbage truck

barrier there. you see the result. >> at least he survived after that stunt. former astronaut buzz aldrin is in stable condition in a new zealand hospital. the 86-year-old was visiting the south pole as a tourist when he became ill. his assistant posting several photos showing aldrin touring the u.s. research base on the antarctic coast. the assistant says he's in good spirits. the second man to walk on the moon has had a very active schedule in recent months living it up. >> i would say so hitting the south pole. it's not unusual to see jail birds in mug shots but not this kind. this suspect had brought his parrot to court not knowing he'd be arrested for violating the terms of his release on multiple misdemeanor charges. when he was booked he said he left the pet outside and asked to get it, and the court deputy agreed. the parrot was picked up shortly by a friend. the bird's owner stayed in jail. >> but i still don't understand why you get to take a picture with the bird on your shoulder. >> because it's cool. >> okay.
