secrets. the white house is on the defense and in damage control mode after thousands of classified afghan war documents were made public by an online organization called wikileaks. meanwhile the group's founder is firing back, casting aside claims that the unauthorized disclosure could put americans at risk. nbc's tracie potts is in washington, d.c., this morning with the latest. tracie, good morning. >> lynn, good morning. there are two big questions today. first of all, who leaked this info from the government to wikileaks, and also what impact it could have on the war effort. in terms of the government investigation into who leaked this information, it is bradley manning. they had already been looking at this army intelligence official, he's an analyst, for a different leak and now they are searching his computers for information about this one. apparently he was in iraq and they want to know if he had

access to these thousands of documents that were leaked. also, what affect is this having on the war. the white house, as you said, doing damage control at this appoint. they have a crisis of confidence. u.s. allies wondering if the united states can keep secrets in the middle of the war. here is what the white house spokesman had to say about that. >> besides being against the law, it has the potential to be very harmful to those that are in our military, those that are cooperating with our military, and those that are working to keep us safe. >> now, the white house had accused wikileaks of being against the war effort. the u.s. policy in afghanistan. but its founder says they scrutinized this information before releasing it. we have tried hard to make sure this material does not put innocents at harm. all the material is over seven months old, so it's of no current operational consequence.

>> reporter: and none of this expected to impact the passage of a $60 billion funding bill on capitol hill. lynn? >> tracie potts for us in washington. tracie, thank you. well, bp confirmed this morning that tony hayward is stepping down as ceo. starting on october 1st, hayward will be replaced by american bob dudley. under the terms of his contract, hayward will receive one year's salary in lieu of notice, amounting to $1.6 million. bp says it also plans on recommending hayward for a nonexecutive board position in a joint venture with russia. today's announcement was made at the same time the oil giant reported a $17 billion loss for the second quarter, a sharp reversal from the company's $6 billion earnings in the first quarter. well, singer wyclef jean. is considering running for president of haiti. that's according to his family who told reporters yesterday that jean has not made a final decision. still, the grammy-winning artist

has reportedly filled out the necessary paperwork to enter the race. there has been speculation over jean's political ambition since 2007 when he was appointed haiti's ambassador at large by the caribbean country's current president who could not seek re-election. of course, whoever wins will face the task of rebuilding the country devastated by that massive earthquake back in january. and now here's a look at some other stories making news early today in america. an oklahoma woman is facing several charges after leading police on a dangerous high-speed chase. at one point, officers say she bailed out of her car but got back in when she realized she had driven into a dead end. later on she drove into another dead end and tried to escape again before eventually surrendering. in new york a prefabricated bridge that will be replacing a century-old harlem river crossing has arrived. it took two weeks for the 350-foot replacement to make the 130-mile journey from a port

near albany on two barges. in florida, authorities are looking into what caused a 60-foot yacht to sink into the atlantic ocean. the captain of the boat said the alarm went off, so he went to look in the engine room and saw the ship was taking on water. he was able to climb into a dinghy and was helped to shore by the coast guard. and who says couch potatoes are lazy? two students in utah are certainly dispelling that myth by getting around town on their motorized couch. it was built from a motor from an old wheelchair, but forget about hitching a ride to class school officials have since placed a campus-wide ban on any type of couch transportation. glad they cleared that up. and now for a look at your national and regional weather, here's nbc's meteorologist bill karins with your weather channel forecast. you know, bill, where i went to college, those couches were usually in the front yard of all the frat houses. if we only thought to put a

motor on them, it would have been brilliant. >> we thought all the inventions were gone with einstein. it's in front of us. now we just need a refrigerator to move along with it. let's talk about headlines weather wise. we did see thunderstorms yesterday. those produced tornadoes unfortunately. last night in montana, a rural area, but one of those tornadoes hit a farmhouse and killed two people. just goes to show you, you don't need a huge outbreak, just one tornado that hits the right spot and you can have fatalities and devastation. we also had thunderstorms in the southeast. as far as what we're dealing with today, things are looking pretty nice in the west. we're going to see coastal clouds lingering here alorng the immediate coast. it was hot yesterday in a few spots in the west, too. here is the weather pattern. storm system, the one in montana responsible for severe weather in dakotas. coastal clouds linger. the high pressure over nevada, that's pretty simple. it's not going to be any big storms moving through. medford today warm and hot, 95. seattle, a beautiful day with

i'm lynn berry, and here are some of your top headlines this morning. on the anniversary of cuba's revolution, fidel castro made the latest in what's become a not-so-rare string of public appearances. the former leader laid a wreath at a monument to cuban revolutionary jose marte, but did not attend the country's main celebration marking the national holiday. a salary scandal in the southern california city of bell has residents outraged and city council members taking a 90% pay cut. just days ago it was discovered that bell city manager was bringing home nearly $800,000 a year in a town where 17% of its 40,000 working-class residents live in poverty. an incredible story of overcoming the odds out of spain where a man known only as oscar

has recovered from the world's first full face transplant. the 31-year-old farmer accidentally shot himself in the face five years ago. and it appears folks in louisiana know how to enjoy themselves. according to the u.s. bureau of labor statistics, louisiana is the laziest state in the u.s. the definition of lazy? time spent doing leisure activities that don't require a lot of physical exertion. and now here's an early look at how wall street will kick off the day. the dow opens at 10,525 after adding 100 points yesterday. the s&p gained 12, and the nasdaq went up 26. taking a look at overseas trading this morning, in tokyo the nikkei fell 6 points, but in hong kong the hang seng climbed 133. wall street continued clawing back yesterday, making headway, thanks to home sales and fedex. a surprising jump of over 23% in new home sales in june countered

some scary recession-like housing data in recent weeks. pulte group up almost 5% led home builders. stocks also got a lift from fedex after the bellwether raised its earnings outlook, sending its stock up more than 4% greeted by investors as a sign of growing economic demand. bank stocks got a late boost after an international oversight body said it will drop many proposals on capital and liquidity rules that banks and governments were resisting. bank of america was up 3%. genzyme is jumping on takeover speculation. genzyme surged almost 8% as the "wall street journal" reported glaxosmithkline is interested, while bloomberg reported genzyme turned down sanofi-aventis. united technologies will cut another 1,500 jobs this year. that's on top of 900 already eliminated this year and over 11,000 jobs cut last year. comair, a regional carrier owned

by delta, has been fined over a quarter million dollars for violating regulations on bumping passengers. comair also is fighting filing inaccurate reports on the number of passengers bumped. the european union opened two antitrust investigations against ibm monday accusing the technology giant of abusing its dominant position in the mainframe computer market. and, finally, "the hollywood reporter" reveals an unusual gift from 87-year-old viacom executive chairman sumner redstone to 29-year-old heather naylor, the lead singer of a struggling female rock band, the electric barbarellas. over $100,000 worth of his viacom stock. a spokesman for redstone who ordered mtv execs to develop a reality show about the band refused to comment on the gift. well, garza throws a no-no, haren flops with halos, and the twins gang up on the royals.

good morning. if you're just waking up, this is "early today." in sports last night, tampa bay's matt garza threw the first no-hitter in rays' history. here's nbc's fred roggin with an early look at all your sports headlines. good morning. it's been the year of the pitcher. count them. five no-hitters, two perfect games already this season. last night tampa bay rays' matt garza was the latest to enter the history books against the tigers. garza's only mistake, a walk in the second inning. did get a little help in the third. danny worth, a line drive to right. ben made a leaping grab, keeping the no-hitter intact. the tigers' matt scherzer also had a no-no going into the sixth when he lost it in a very big way. after walking, the bases loaded, matt joyce unloaded a grand slam, first hit of the game by either team. rays led, 4-0. scherzer didn't make it out of the inning. we go to the ninth. garza got ramon santiaga to fly out, and there you go. the righty faced a minimum 27 batters, struck out six for the

first no-hitter in rays history. tampa bay won it, 5-0. yankees' alex rodriguez chasing history of his own. he remains stuck on 599 home runs after going 0 for 4 against the indians. down one in the eighth. curtis granderson, a two-run shot to put the yanks ahead. he's got 112 home runs in his career if you're counting. yanks won it, 3-2. dan haren made his angel debut against the red sox. things really didn't go as planned. david ortiz took haren deep in the third for his first of two home runs boston up, 2-1. in the fifth, haren took a line drive off the forearm and had to leave the game. angels are hoping he can provide a shot in the arm, but that's not what they had in mind. apparently nobody told the twins that this is the year of the pitcher. they put up 19 runs against the royals. joe mauer was perfect at the plate. five hits, including this homer. he also had seven rbis. that's a good week for most players. twins won, 19-1. from offense to defense, the mariners and white sox, mark kotsay, a shot deep to right. ichiro calmly rolled back and then robbed kotsay of an assured

and now here's an early look at this morning's headlines in entertainment. she may not have been able to beat leonardo dicaprio this weekend at the box office, but angelina jolie is still worth every penny she makes. setting her new high with a $20 million salary for her spy thriller "salt," according to the website popeater, the talk of tinseltown is about how hard jolie is working to push the film. she appeared at the comic-con convention. she hosted a washington reception at the international spy museum. she signed autographs for over 45 minutes at the film's u.s. premiere, just did the film opening in moscow, and now she's in tokyo. one of the executives says she may now be one of the most bankable female stars in hollywood. answering questions from facebook fans, zac efron says thanks to steve carell, the tv show he'd most like to guest star on is "the office." he'd better hurry since carell leaves after the season. and, finally, congratulations goes out to 38-year-old breast cancer survivor christina applegate. she's pregnant with her first child.

this comes from our nation's capital. congressman made history in honor of the 20th anniversary of americans with disability act. yesterday the rhode island democrat became the first person in a wheelchair to preside over the house of representatives. now in his fifth term, he was paralyzed at age 16 when a police officer's gun accidentally discharged. he later vowed, quote, i may be the first quadriplegic to serve in congress, but i won't be the last. pretty inspiring, isn't it, bill? >> i just learned a lot of stuff there. i didn't realize he was in congress first off. >> exactly. >> i'm pretty impressed by that. >> and that it was the anniversary of the americans with disabilities act yesterday. we just tied that all in for you. >> i'm sure he's proud and we should all be proud. >> i'm lynn berry. this is early today, just your first stop of the day today on yor nbc station. he

in india honored their most revered goddess in one painful ritual. both men and women walk barefooted over a glowing bed of burning embers for an annual religious festival. the sport caps off a month of fasting and performing rituals of devotion which they believe shows their gratitude to a goddess for fulfilling their wishes. >> it was a hero's sendoff for sailors in denmark. fireworks lit up the sky to kick off the second leg of the annual tall ships races. 84 tall ships with 3,000 crew members set their sails for norway in a mission to compete and socialize.
