cause delays at sfo airport and we will be tracking that this morning. the lunchtime temperatures and as we go through the rest of the week, we will see warmer temperatures and walk you through that in the seven-day forecast in a few minutes. brent? >> thanks a lot, a as lucky few try to get back to life as normal, we have the latest numbers on that explosion. the fire sdrid nearly 50 homes and damaged dozens of others. investigators are trying to confirm how many people died, but so far the toll is at least four with another four missing. at least 60 are injured and some of them critically. the explosion blew apart a 28-footlong pipe into the street and created a crater 167 feet long and 26 feet wide. today in the bay, bob ri dell is live with a look at what the people who live near the crater are returning to. >> you are talking about the

pipeline. the ntsb created what appears to be the culprit in the disaster. a 28 footlong steel pipeline ploen from the ground thursday night and workers until moments ago were secureing it into a massive crate on the back of a flatbed. that was within the past 5 or 10 minutes was headed for a lab in washington, d.c. for further anal dis. at 10:00, there will be a meeting to help them with living arrangement, crisis counselling and any other issues. residents whose homes were not damaged or destroyed were able to return to what turned out to be a place froze nen time. thursday night's supper as people left it as they ran for their lives that night. pg&e was in to tow to make sure power was to be turned back on. they are refusing to move back

in permanently until the home is inspectioned. the home was rocked so much, they want to get the reassurance from someone in the know like an engineer. four people are still missing including greg and his 17-year-old son who has not been seen since the explosion. william's mom is also missing and the fourth person has not been identified. speaking of that meeting, it's for people who lost homes or whose homes were damaged here in san bruno. it will be at the senior center off crystal springs drive at 10:00 a.m. live here in san bruno, today in the bay. >> thank you very much, bob. federal investigators will be out again this morning scouring the site of the explosion. the ntsb has the big job of

figuring out what caused the explosion. from the ntsb, they join us from san bruno thank you for joining us. >> how long do you expect it to take to comb through the scene for evidence and what's next after that. >> i didn't hear the question. >> how long do you expect it to take to comb through the scene for evidence and what's expected after that. >> the investigators will be there a week or 10 days to do whatever they need for the investigation. what we are trying to do is do everything we can to enable the restoration of infrastructure and we wanted to take the pipe out and not only taking that 28-foot section, but the pieces adjacent on either end. we are taking those become to washington for further analysis. >> you are not expected to have it ready for more than a year.

why does it take so long? >> the examination is exhaustive and detailed and we look at all aspects of the pipe from the installation in 1956 to the history to the operation. we look at the people involved in operating the pipe and the survival factors and the emergency preparedness system that the operator has in place and also the implementation. we will be locking at all as pecks in an effort to determine not only what caused it, but how to best sbhond this thing happens. we will make recommendations. >> some neighbors were claiming that they smelled gas a week before and had complained to pg&e. has anyone come to you with that claim? >> we heard that and are following the rumors up and have not yet been able to confirm that. we are asking people we have given an e-mail address for people to report to us

directionally or asking them to report to the authorities and report to us. anyone who smelled gas and called in a report, we would like to hear from these people. >> you instructed organizations involved in the incident like pg&e and the california public utilities commission not to talk to the media. why is that? >> when you are doing an accident investigation, we want one source and that's us. we are the only source that is unbiassed completely. anything that is not about the investigation, the other parties are free to talk to the media in terms of the investigation itself. the rules are being a party are that only one source of information will be provided. >> i understand as well, the city of san bruno had work done in that area back a few years ago. are you looking at that as well? >> we will be looking at the history of any nearby excavation. we did not see any evidence, but

we will look at the history and further exploring if there could have been any damage from the excavation. >> we know it's a job ahead of you. thank you for joining us. >> thank you for having me. >> now to the question that is on the minds of a lot of people in the bay area. do i have a major pipeline near my home? we have more on that. it's a compelling question. >> the same pipeline continues 2 1/2 miles north and pg&e said that was set to be repaired in 2012. it was deemed a high risk to fail pipeline. the good news the day after the explosion. they tested the section that runs through south san francisco and found no leaks. public documents show another high risk pipeline runs for eight miles between livermore and a four-mile section in fremont, also considered at risk. we have a map of the major gas pipelines in the area on

nbcbayarea.com. it's a link to the pipeline and hazardous material safety administration. i just checked that link. the website owned by this agency works fine. the pip line is returning irregular results. they did not expect linkage. people are wanting to know if the pipeline exists. it's a very, very small government agency. be patient. >> it's cool to look at. making oakland neighborhoods safer. there is a push to get more police officers and neighborhood patrols on oakland city streets. kristi smith is live in oakland with a plan on how will it affect neighborhoods. kristi? >> this will put 63 beat officers back on the streets of oakland. essentially restoring most of the position that is the council had to cut a couple of months ago to try and balance the

budget. it's called measure bb. voters will find it on the november ballot. i was looking at how the registrar of voters describes it and it comes at no additional cost to voters and it amens measure y and suspends the requirement that a certain amount of funding go to staff and levels from way back in 2003. this lowers the threshold of officers required to move forward here in oakland. voters have to decide whether they want to tinker with a measure they passed back in 2004. with those cut that is the council it h to make calls for service for reprioritizing and many were worried they may not get enough help from the police department. the councilmember who is also running for mior is pushing this and will be holding a press conference today at city hall at 11:30. reporting live in oakland, in the bay.

>> thanks a lot. a new wildfire is burning out of control in colorado and there is little firefighters can do until the sun comes up. a 600 acre fire is racing in colorado north of the boulder fire. this destroyed one house and several smaller buildings. 350 families have been told to evacuate. no word on what started the new fire. >> the man accused of trying to blow up a flight on christmas day is back in court. hundreds of people were on the northwest flight prosecutors tried to detonate explosives hidden in his underwear. some say that would send the wrong message. >> a waiting game for the family of a bay area hiker held in iran. tehran said they will release sarah shourd when a bail is

paid. her lawyer is waiting for confirmation when iran received that money. shourd's health is the main reason for her release. her mom said it's possible she has cancer. josh and shane who were also arrested in july of 2009 will not be released. all three were arrested when they allegedly walked across the iraq border into iran. >> workers at israel's airport is off the jobs. they are not affected by the flight to israel out of los angeles. flights are surrounded. flights that are airborne are being allowed to land, but travelers cannot collect their luggage. it's happening in the heavily traveled jewish holiday season. workers want the government to guarantee pensions. >> the obama administration will continue a push for peace. secretary of state hillary clinton and the president's

envoy to the region will arrive in egypt with two days of talks between the leaders and palestine. the most immediate issue is the housing construction on the west bank. congress returns to talk about something that will probably affect the bottom line. lawmakers debate whether or not to let the bush tax cuts expire. households making more than $200,000 a year will pay thousand more at tax time. the obama administration wants to raise the cutoff to over 250,000. republicans don't want any to expire, but may agree if the cutoff is over $1 million. with elections coming up, they are rehunt ant to do anything that makes the voters upset. >> the bay area doesn't have a permanent ceo. hp continues to go on a buying spree. >> spending while nobody is really in charge.

problems with the equipment. that may send folks with no major issues. the approach was looking smooth to the san mateo bridge. southbound 880 and that will be an issue. that is the portion where we see the slow down. slow approaching the bridge down south through hayward and in the westbound direction. eastbound 580 is unusual. not typical for the eastbound direction. we will follow it to make sure there no major issues. it may just be traffic increasing the all the yellow spees below 50 miles per hour and 18 empty drive with 19 or 20 minutes. slow all the way through livermore and a nice easy drive through the construction zone. how is it looking in the south bay? >> as you travel into san jose,

patchy low clouds and comfortable temperatures to start off monday morning. we are at 57 degrees in san jose. southeast wind at 5:00. temperatures in the 50s with lots of low clouds that. is the story for the first high. we passed the middle part of the week and things start to woman up and more 80s. 75 and san jose is 66 around the area. 70s around heelds berg and the seven-day forecast warms us up. thursday and friday are the warmest days and as you head towards the weekend, more clouds start spilling in. >> thanks, rob. the kids are likely settling into school, but are they digging into the lunches you packed? julie upjoins with us rug rat nutrition 101.

the first meal of the day is most important. >> breakfast shows that kids who eat breakfast perform better in school and out of school and less likely to be over weight. you can make a quick and easy breakfast. a whole grain serving, a fruit and a dairy serving and you are done. obviously with the whole grain, cold cereal. less than 10 grams of sugar. the other thing is oatmeal. it keeps kids fuller longer. i saw this the mix up equations. they it mix two packets. they are smaller and still get that fiber and fortified with calcium and b vitamins. >> so it's not too sugary. for lurch, we want to go with four elements. a whole grain serving and i have options here. kids get bored with bread.

use tortillas, pita pockets. hamburger buns, english muffins. as long as they are whole grain. i made a couple of options. whole wheat frozen waffles with peanut butter and fresh fruit. something different to beat the boredom. another great idea is the whole grain flour tortilla with hummus for protein. then pile on veggas. >> approximate are obviously you would wrap this off. >> haas avocados are a nutrient booster and good fat. the kids will absorb more anti-oxidants with the avocado. frud. you want to have a fruit serving. fresh fruit is fine. you can go with dried fruit. only a quarter cup cowns. that's a small amount.

francisco and 66 in oakland. a warm up in the seven-day forecast in a few minutes. parra are a lot of new developments in san bruno this morning. the ntsb is sifting through debris, trying to figure out exactly what happened. thursday's explosion destroyed nearly 50 homes and dozens of others were damaged. at least four people are dead and four others missing. at least 60 people are injured. california, the state is ordering pg&e to check all of the natural gas lines in the state for leaks. thursday's blast left a giant crater and blew a large piece of pipe out of the ground. bob is live in san bruno where investigators are at work. bob? >> good morning. they crated up and driven away what will most likely be the most telling piece of evident in the disaster. a 28-footlong section of 30-inch steel gas pipeline blown out of the ground after it ruptured.

about a half hour ago, a flat bud crated up on its back and started the drive to an ntsb lab where it will be analyzed. it was found in the middle of the neighborhood about 100 feet from where it was supposed to be. also the focus, residents reporting they smelled gas in the days leading up to the blast. pg&e check and found between september 1st and 9th, they have no reports of anyone complaining about a gas smell. for the residents whose homes were destroyed or damaged, there will be a meeting for them and this will be a chance to come up with living arrangements and crisis counseling or other issues. people whose homes were not destroyed were able to return to a place frozen in time. thursday night supper still set out in the kitchen. pg&e helped them reignite their

power lights and make sure the power was safe to go back on. they are refusing to move back until their home is inspected. the explosion rocked their house so much they want to make sure it's safe. there four people still missing including gregory and his son william seen there. they have not been heard from since the explosion. william's mom is also missing. the fourth person is not yet identified. live in san bruno, today in the bay. >> other pipelines considered at risk according to a public filing, pg&e said the pipeline is most at risk with a section through livermore and the second highest in fremont. we will take a closer look at 6:50. >> right now a check on the marks. they are open and scott has the

numbers. >> a positive start and the dow up better than 70 points and nasdaq up 22. congratulations if you own ark site. hewlett packard is buying the company and they are matching hp's offer. pacific gas and electric is publicly trade and you can buy stock in it, that stock is not doing terribly well. several analysts downgrade and shares dropped to about 8% on friday. a run-of-the-mill day, we see about three million pg&e shares traded. friday it was 30 million. >> i'm not surprised. new this morning, the long-delayed case against a bakery leader on three counts of murder. a judge delayed because the

lawyer was suffer for example a serious back problem. he and another man both 24 years old are accused of killing oakland journalist chauncy bailey in august of 2007. bailey was working on the story that the problems were founded. it will set into motion a request to move the trial out of alameda county. >> jesse jackson will be in the bay area and headed to the third baptist church to talk about interfaith unity and col rans. it's an effort to bring faith leaders and encourage solidarity. the bay area unification and solidarity breakfast starts at 10:30 this morning. >> time to get another check on the commute if you are headed out the door. >> we will take you for a look at the bay bridge. an easy drive down, but it started early because the

metering lights were turned on early. the back is up built over the overcrossing towards west grand avenue. heavy for this time of day at the toll plaza. 6:35 right now. we have heavier traffic on the lower neck as folks head out of the city with bart problems at sfo towards the east bay. as far as the lines go, expect the ripple effect. at least half hour delays and the approach to the toll plaza, that is moving from the east bay over towards the funnel across the bay into the city. we are looking at more slow downs with two accidents reported. one at a street and below 20 to 30 miles per hour. we might see more traffic from the peninsula as folks head away and possibly take the bridge over as an alternate. livermore shows slowing. westbound 20 minutes over

welcome back. 6:44 and taking a live look outside. expected highs in the bay area and fremont is 73. just about perfect across the bay. >> we also have a live look at the destruction zone in san browno and a look down the stretch of the neighborhood there. you can see where the crater is. federal investigators are on the ground trying to figure out what happened and at the same time, fire officials are continuing their grim task of searching for other victims. you will have a live report if in a few minutes. >> students are carrying a heavy class load and lifting heavy debt. live in washington, d.c., total student loan debt exceeds credit

card debt. amazing. >> it's hard to believe. $850 billion in outstanding student loan debt. we have new figures from the project on student debt. they looked at government data and analyzed it and came up with this. 3/5 are graduating after four years with an enormous amount of debt. if are those who aren't, many of them, their parents have the debt because they took out the loans for the education. in public schools, you are likely to guarduate with $20,000 worth of debt. both of those up significantly from years earlier. let's take a close look at california. in california, the situation is better. $18,000 is the average debt for student graduate for example a-year school. just under half, 48% graduate with that debt. of course community colleges are much less expensive, but believe it or not, students in community

college are asking for financial aid more often than those at public universities. >> a lot of debt to hold. thank you very much. >> coming up on 6:47, we want to check the morning commute. mikea sigalert to tell you about. >> reportedly involving a way truck. a large vehicle and a person driving may have a broken femur. a couple of lanes with the injuries and ambulance arriving on scene. the accident has cleared, but this is causing slowing all the way down towards the area through hayworth and the transition ramp. had he every slowing and restricted traffic. expect the volume to increase. a lot of folks who know the area will head over on to surface sdreets. northbound at the street, but the volume will increase as you look at the roadways.

the mild pattern we have thanks to the jet stream, morning clouts and afternoon sunshine. they will stay along the ocean-facing side and along the coast. high pressure builds in, this will boost the temperatures back into the mid 80s and not until about wednesday afternoon and thursday. 75 degrees late or once we lose the low clouds and expect patchy low clouds all day. 60 for a high there and 66 in oakland and 72 around petaluma. things are warming and we are cooling off for the weekend. >> thanks, rob. new this morning, we learn more about a push to get more police officers and neighborhood patrols on city streets in oakland. today kristi smith is live in oakland with a look at the new plant and how it would affect east way neighborhoods.

>> this would put 63 police officers back on the streets patrolling in oakland restoring most of the positions that were cut a couple of months ago by the city council. votersville to decide whether they want to act on the issue to amend a violence prevention program. this new is measure bb and comes at no additional cost to taxpayers and would basically suspend the requirement that cities levelled and established in 2 thousand 3. they had to make the tough decision to lay off officers to balance the budget and police calls had to be retprioritized. jean quan will explain much more about measure bb at a press event at 11:30 at city hall. live in oakland, kristi smith,

gas. some were allowed to move back to the neighborhood. we had them relight power lights and make sure the power was safe to be turned back on. they cleaned out the fridge for spoil food and came to grips with the destruction. you have some unscathed and others are nothing left butt foundation. the people who lived in the homes, there is a meeting at 10:00 a.m. at the senior center on crystal springs drive. it will be a chance to get help with living arrangements and crisis counseling and other issues. new document and new information came out that there other high risk gas lines that pg&e has. one is here in the bay area. we have scott to fill us in. >> there several.

in fact the same pipeline continues 2 1/2 miles north of you north of the explosion site. that was set to be repaired in 2012. it was deemed high risk to fail. after the explosion, they tested the section and it runs through south san francisco and found no leaks. they show another high risk pipeline runs for eight miles between livermore and a four-mile section considered at risk. we have maps of the pine line on our website, nbcbayarea.com. i know you were talking with the ntsb earlier. they have no record of anyone calling in if someone called in and remembered doing so, they should be contacting the ntsb so they can continue and know more about that. >> absolutely. they definitely wanted to hear from people and they will be in
