joining us. i'm laura garcia cannon. >> i'm brent cannon. we take a look at the forecast. >> the warm upstarts today. we are forecasting the temperatures to get up into the the 80s in the east bay. 60 no, sir san francisco and as we look at the forecast highs, expect to add another 15 degrees to those once we hit the weekend. the seven-day forecast is coming up. >> we are looking at the 60s and above there as well because of the freeway spees we are seeing with an easy drive. over the bay bridge, no wind advisory. it's still chilly, but keep that in mind and bring the jacket for now. we are looking at the rest of the maze. no problems for the approach, but off of highway 24, the bigger issue is the issue itself. >> developing news we are

following and a tense moment for families forced out by a gas leak. it comes on the anniversary of the san bruno explosion. christie smith is live in orinda with the latest for us. good morning. >> good morning to you. crews are out here working to cap this natural gas leak, but when we last checked it, it wasn't capped. when we crossed the freeway this set up for the live shot, we smelled natural gas there near a gas station. when you get close enough, you can hear a hissing sound near the pipe. as a result, part of downtown blocked this morning. there is fire trucks and yellow tape and heightened concern because of what happened in san bruno. i did speak with the city manager on site. she told me an outside contractor was working on a repaving project. they hit a natural gas line. there was panic because initial reports were this was a six-inch

line. turns out it was two inches. at first report, about a dozen homes were evacuated, but those families were allowed back home. if you know the area, this was near bev mo. they are trying to get it cleared up because it's popular here and you pass by to get to the bart station and highway 24. reporting live in orinda, christie smith, today in the bay. new this morning, concern is growing that pg&e will try to pass the cost of the gas line disaster on to customers in the form of rate hikes. in a few hours, state regulators will take up the possibility at the california public utilities commission meeting in san francisco. utility watch dog groups are pressuring the cpuc to make sure pg&e pays for all the costs related to the explosion. the recovery stake takes a big

step forward. heavy equipment will begin demolition and today in the bay's bob redell is live where there concerns about what is in the debris that they will be digging up. >> reporter: good morning. you can imagine the kinds of hazardous materials that are probably still on location here in san bruno. cans of paints in the homes and car batteries. asbestos in the older homes. in a few hours shlgs they will fire up back hoes and begin demolition of what's left of the homes and start hauling the debris and ash. there is a sense of urgency to get the job done sooner ran later. one for the people who live here to get their land back and start rebuilding, but we are coming up on the rainy season. the authorities don't want the wet weather to wash any toxic chemicals from the site into the bay. there is also the issue of what will be thrown up in the air

when the back hoes rumble through. workers were out here spraying down the area with water to help settle any dust that could be kicked up. this the take three to four weeks to get the neighborhood cleaned. the priority will be to remove the burned out cars to provide easier access for the clean up equipment. the county hired group to manage the clean up. that cost to be reimbursed by the homeowners by insurance, but one group that tried to coordinate all of this. the fire destroyed 37 homes. they can have it done and 25 homeowners already have agreed to join and there is at least another that will be signing up. reporting live here in san bruno, today in the bay. this morning we are following an investigation into a coast to coast cocaine ring. 22 people are changed with the

decade-long experience. 16 of those 22 are from california. eight of them from oakland, san jose, and hayward. prosecutors say timothy white who lived in this home in tracy provided most of the cocaine that was traffic friday california to pennsylvania. one of the neighbors said white seemed nice, but thought there was something suspicious too. >> your ideal neighbor, i guess. always new cars or expensive stuff. >> the neighbor said he remembers seeing another man, ruben mitchell of stockton in the neighborhood. mitchell is accused of losing 41 pounds of cocaine on a southwest airlines flight bound for pittsburgh. he filed a lost baggage claim to get it back. how did the traffickers move through airport security undetected? they flew carry on and bypassed security. most of the 22 people accused of participating are facing life

sentence. we are also following developing news out of the east bay. three people shot at an oakland club. oakland police are at the caribou club on webster. they arrived before 2:00 this morning and found two people injured inside. all three were taken to the hospital. no word if the injuries are-threatening right now. we are continue to follow this developing story this morning. a warning this morning from east bay police. a brazen bandit accused of posing as a cop is stealing cash from women. a woman was walking past mcdonald's on 14th street near 148th avenue when a cop pulled up with flashing lights and yelled for her to freeze. it happened in rush hour and the suspect then rifled through her wallet, stealing $200 before taking off. robber who is pose as cops make it tougher for the good guys to

do their job. >> we obviously want the trust of the public. when you have that doubt in people's minds t makes it that much more difficult. >> police say you should always look for badges and name tags and ask for identification if you have suspicions. a warning for parents, two men tried to lure a boy into their car. the 13-year-old was walking at the shopping center in walnut creek when two men in a dark blue chevy pulled up next to him. they said the boy's mom sent them to pick him up. they did get a good look at the men. they hope to release a sketch later today. one was bald with green eyes and a goatee. he was heavy set. a bay area transit service is cutting service. they voted to cut weekend service in half and four of the six late night lines will be

eliminat eliminated. they are expected to save about $11 million a year, but cost 90 people their jobs. they face a $56 million deficit. . we will take you to the south bay where things pick up as far as the activity. construction is clearing from 101, but we have the on ramp blocked for the next hour and likely picking up over 20 minutes. northbound 101 at julian and closed potentially until 6:00 a.m. the red and the blip there southbound 87 towards capital expressway is likely nonsense with the sensors. i will follow that or tap the computer gentry. the bayshore freeway is moving smoothly and coming down towards men low park. speeds are above the speed

limit. watch the speeds. always 65. >> thank you very much. we are officially in fall. summer is hanging on. >> the seasons can't figure out what to do. it does feel like fall and we feel cool temperatures, but winds are not as strong as they have been. let's look at the temperatures. 50 in livermore and 52 in san mateo. 48 degrees in novato. not a lot of fog being reported. currently we have 46 degrees. the highest wind speed is 14 miles per hour. that's being reported in fairfield and most of us are doing this with calm or light wind this is morning. like laura was saying, fall today, but summer this weekend. our forecast highs make it into the triple-digits in spots this weekend and into early next week. it's time to get ready for the heat. the air quality is great and seeing a lot of green. not seeing a lot of white or cloud cover. no rain to talk about for quite a while.

1-800-986-8850. we have the information on the bottom of our screen and at nbcbayarea.com. the benefit of mammograms for women may be more modest than previously thought. a new study out of norway shows women in their 50s and 60s who got mammograms every other year reduced the risk of dieing for breast cancer by 10%. that's a lot less than a task force estimated. they thought mammograms would reduce deaths by about 15. the task force is the same one that released a controversial study last year suggesting that women may not need to begin screening until 50. there may be a better way to detect breast cancer. a new 3d mammography system is being develop and would create a 3d and a 2 d image for doctors to use. women would have to undergo a higher dose of radiation to get the images. a panel of doctors review the

still cool outside this morning, but today is the official start of the warm up towards a hot weekend. 8:00 a.m., we forecast in the 50s. in livermore and 55 in fairfield. 55 degrees in san francisco and 56 in santa cruz. not a lot of fog around this morning. haven't seen a lot of low clouds as well. by the lunch hour, 70 in oakland and 78 degrees in santa rosa. a lot of sunshine forecast and a lot of blue sky reaching 80 in san jose. 82 in roy and 83 in fairfield. we have clouds in the pacific, but this weekend it's not going to be a factor in our forecast.

to talk about community concerns about racial and religious profiling. arabs and middle eastern muslim and south asian communities concerned about the reactvation of intelligence. tonight's meeting will be at city hall at 6:00. a vigil will be held for the teen killed in a car accident last week. isaac was riding in a friend's car when it crashed into a big rig on friday. he was killed. the driver of the big rig and four other teens were injured. the car's driver was charged with vehicular manslaughter and dui. the viewing and vigil will be held at our lady of lo rhetto catholic church. he will be buried tomorrow morning. the proposed airport connector is a step closer to reality. the california transportation commission unanimously approving $20 million in state funding for the elevated tram way project. work could begin in six months and should take about three to

years to finish. >> tensions running high where crews are working to cap a gas leak. it forced families out of their homes overnight. christie smith is live in orinda with the latest. christie? >> good morning. i just got off the phone with the city manager. she is on site and tells me pg&e is working on this natural leak. it is leaking right now, but the new information is they are hoping to have this capped off in about an hour. that means that parts of downtown are still closed off this morning along mo raga way due to the natural gas leak. there is heightened concern because of what happened with the san bruno explosion and fire. she told me that an outside contractor was working on a paving project late last night around 11:15 and hit the natural gas line with a back hoe. you can hear the leak if you get close enough. initial reports were this was a pretty big line.

because the governor is battling a cold. the debate is buzzing at uc berkeley to get pot legalized. students hosted a debate on proposition 19 that makes smoking marijuana legal for adults. the discussion was open to the public, but brought student groups together to discuss a hot button topic. >> worried about the economic state of california and of the country. i think that marijuana legalization can help that and we recognize it's not the the drug the older generations are telling us it is. it's not dangerous and something we should be afraid of. we should be useing it and taxing it. >> the latest poll shows supporters winning by five points. >> a new study finds two alcoholic drink can slow reactions in older adults. the blood alcohol levels of healthy men and women over the age of 80 after two mixed

drinks. although they were legally able to drive, their reactions while walking on a treadmill were impaired. they hit the obstacles twice as often as people who did not consume alcohol and the response time was also delayeded. >> i want to update ow a story out of oakland where three people have been hit by gunfire. scott joins us with the latest. >> we reported this about a half hour ago. three people were shot in an oakland club. police are at the caribou club on webster street and just arrived before 2:00 this morning and found two people inside injured. here's a map for you. all three people taken tolt hospital. no word if there life-threatening injuries. we continue to monitor this and will update you throughout the day. >> sounds good. >> meantime, it is 5:36 and we want to check the morning commute with mike. >> that's right. we have a new accident as well as the slow down we anticipated in antioch.

this may be an additional problem as things start to slow down. we see that 35 miles per hour at l street where there is the scene of a motorcycle accident. no details on the driver. an ambulance has been sent to the scene and a big concern when a motorcycle is involved. we will follow this carefully. it could cause impact for folks, but the typical pattern as far as the sensors are concerned. westbound at l street. livermore shows a normal volume of traffic through the area and southbound 680, we see slowing on the sensors approaching that interchange at highway 84 and the new express lane. that's typical. report of an accident on the side of the road where they marked. the semi truck is on the side. there will be a distraction. that shows you southbound with the tail lights, although it picked up in volume, folks should be going in the 50s and 60s through the express lane and over the hill to fremont and into the south bay.

we will catch the map as we look down past mission. both smooth and no major problems in the northbound commute. we see the sensors and we have an accident reported on southbound 880. right around the off-ramp, you will find activity that should be cleared. no injuries reported. the rest of the freeways are looking good. the speed is close to the limit. 87, 87, and 101. we might see the temperature coming up. >> that's right. triple-digits are possible this weekend. not today. we are starting out with nice weather looking at temperatures in the 50s at 8:00 a.m. low cloud cover and fog being reported around santa rosa. the lunch hour forecast with temperatures in the 60s and 70s. the temperature of 82 in los gatos. 78 degrees in napa. in the city, looking at a temperature of 68 degrees and wind pick picking up.

there will be no lifetime limits on coverage. people with expensive cancer treatments won't see benefits run out. also in effect, no preexisting conditions for kids. you won't be able to be denied coverage because your kids under 19 have that condition and preventive care is covered. things like mammograms. republicans say lots of new coverage, but it will cost you. >> premiums may go down slightly, but copayments and deductibles will go up. >> access to care goes down and you have more people and fewer doctors seeing patients. >> now, republicans are hoping to repeal this entire health reform package as part of what they call the pledge to america. they are unveiling that today. a series of steps that they say they will take if they win in november and regain control in congress. in addition health care, it

includes extending the rates for everyone. not just the middle class, but wealthy americans as well. tracie potts today in the bay. >> a reminder we will have a live interview in about a half hour. new this morning, san jose mayor chuck reed will talk about the state's public pension system. they will talk to a commission that is studying the long-term impact of current systems. the commission recommend future changes. public employee retiree costs are one of the biggest to state and local governments and they have been on the rise. from city hall to the slaler. the man accused of creating a scheme that stole millions from the city of bell in southern california is still in jail this morning. he and five other current and city officials did not make bail. two did. all eight were shackled when they appear in court for a bail hearing. they are accused of stealing $5.5 million from the blue

collar city of bell. all eight will be arraigned on october 21st. >> now the news on decision 2010. jerry brown leads meg whitman in the governor's race, but it's a dead heat. the latest poll shows brown with a three-point lead which is inside the margin of error. however it shows a dramatic 10-point swing over the last three weeks. you can hear from the candidates yourself in a bay area news special, decision 2010. brown and whitman will square off october 12th at 6:30 and tom brocaw will moderate the debate. >> barbara boxer has her first lead in the senate race against carly fiorina in two months. an eight-point swing in the last three months. mayor gavin newsom has a lead over the lieutenant governor

contractor was working on a paving project near mo raga way and a back hoe hit a natural gas line. there was panic that this was a six-inch line. neighbors were evacuated and the city manager said there is a heightened sense of awareness given the explosion in san bruno. this was a two-inch line and people were quickly allowed back in their homes. for now, mo raga way near downtown is partially impacted. live in orinda, christie smith, today in the bay. >> a busy thoroughfare in there. thank you. >> 5:53. we want to check the forecast. it is going to begin to heat up. as soon as we hit fall, we start to see warm temperatures. if you like the cool weather, looking at 52 degrees in napa that. is the 8:00 a.m. forecast. 55 degrees in san francisco. 56 degrees in santa cruz.

it's about warmer temperatures. 78 at noon in santa rosa. 76 in los gatos. 75 in livermore. 4:00, we are warping up into the 80s inland. hanging on to the 60s in san francisco. santa cruz will see 76. the reason we have the warm upcoming, high pressure. high pressure will sit on top of us. it will be weather systems to the north. warm weather makes a come back and we are talking about the possibility of temperatures reaching 100 in the east bay and the inland areas. along the coast will be the coolest with the temperatures in the 70s. that's the seven-day forecast as promised there is the hotter weather. it will hang around until tuesday. outdoor plan this is weekend, make sure they include water and shade. >> good ideas to keep in mind. the raiders have a new starting quarterback. bruce will start sunday in arizona. tom cable benched the well-paid starter jason campbell after a
