the six-year draught is finally over. how the giants celebrate and as did their fans. >> a look at the san mateo bridge and the reason for the high wind advisory. if you are headed to the bay bridge, an accident that might affect the drive. i will show you where and what to avoid today in the bay. good morning to you. >> i'm kbrent cannon, straight up 6:00 on a monday morning. this is a look at the forecast. it's chilly and brisk and you might need the windshield wipers. windy at times and only 60s inland and highs near 70. mid 60s in oakland and 62 in san francisco and we are tracking intense thundershowers in the sierra. we will look at that in a few minutes.

new this morning, san jose police are looking for suspects after an apparent stabbing at an elementary school. >> a group of people beat and stabbed a 28-year-old man. officers say the victims's friends came and stabbed one of the suspects. both groups took off, but one of the get away vans hit another car. the stabbing victims are now in the hospital and police think the attacks are gang-related. if you are traveling to europe, be prepared. americans traveling to europe got a heads up from the government to be on the look out for potential terrorist attacks there. al qaeda and others may be planning attacks like the bombings and shootings in mumbai, india. do not stay home, just be on alert around trains and tourist attractions. they believe eight germans and two brothers hiding may be planning an attack sanctioned by

osama bin laden himself. >> that are has travelers feeling a bit nervous. christie smith is live at the airport with more on that story. christie? >> good morning, brent. we didn't see anything specific posted in the airport about this alert, but i can tell you most of the travelers we spoke with are aware of it. most if not all. they seem to be divided over whether they would change travel plans over this or not or do anything differently in terms of changing where they would feel safe going once they got there. a manager here told us that most of the international flights leave early overnight to places like mexico with connectors back east and on to europe. the alert stopped short of the warning not to go. here's what one traveler told us about it this morning. >> what are would you do differently? >> i don't know. maybe cancel my flight. i don't have to go over there

for any business travel. >> you hadn't heard about this? >> no, i haven't. >> the manager here told us that the threat level remains at orange as it has been for sometime. he said they are watching these alerts closely as they come out. live at oakland international airport, christie smith, today in the bay. >> a manhunt is under way in san jose for a woman and a man who allegedly kidnapped her. 18-year-old briancon fronted a couple before 8:00 yesterday morning. he allegedly stabbed the man several times and then kidnapped 18 yore old judy la. he knew one of the victims, but police are not saying which. they are not giving a motive either. the man who was stabbed is expected to survive. he may be traveling in a black

2002 lexus with license snb 6 dsj 212. >> more informs on what is a stunning situation at an east bay permanent complex. another attempted sexual assault. the fifth attack at that complex reported since july happened saturday night at the park regency apartments in walnut creek east of 680. a 43-year-old woman was grabbed while leaving her apartment. she said the man tried to force her inside, but she was able to get away. the suspect say man 5'9" inches call, white male with a meet yum build and brown hair and facial hair. police do not know if he's the same man suspected in last month's assault. they did make an arrest in connection with the first three and have that person in custody. >> a pair of off duty san jose firefighters are being called heroes after they pulled people out of a burping apartment

building. firefighters happened to be near almaden expressway. they rushed in to help families to safety even though they were not wearing protective gear. one firefighter was injured in the process. we will talk to the men about their heroic rescue. in oakland, a height row phonics superstore is expanding in a big way. an i grow store reopened as we grow. it is now a national franchise and the company leaders say they have 75 stores set to open soon across the country. they plan to build a cultivation center in oakland. opponents say public safety is being sacrificed just so the city can collect taxes from the pot-agreeing industry. >> the bay area is still a buzz this morning after a-year draft. the giants are headed to the playoffs. chris sanchez is live in san francisco with the fan reaction.

the latest. good morning, chris. >> good morning. you didn't have to be inside the stadium to feel the excitement and to feel it. i had a window cracked and could feel the favorite cheering down the street. a lot of enthusiasm and plenty of corks flying in the giants clubhouse as well as the thirst for playoff bursts with a win yesterday. the six-year drought was ended and the giants didn't celebrate alone. across the street at pete's tavern the giants fans were set brighting and the hoping and praying and all of their orange and black wearing paid off yesterday. >> i have been screaming the whole way. the last few games have been torture. this is fantastic. >> it's what san francisco needed. it's finally here. we have been officially a wading this moment. we are thrilled. thank god it happened today.

lost the series against the braves and most likely tim lincecum will be on the mound. one win and one loss this season. >> meantime, almost 6:08 and we want to check in with mike inouye. a minor injury accident and you can use the scene on to westbound 80. that's your east shore freeway. a lot of directions out of that. dlar the commute down towards richmond. a nice easy drive and 18 minutes off of the bridge and westbound 80 moving nicely. we will show you what's not moving nicely. early slow down and that showed up and that's standard right now after an early start.

about 20 mondays earlier. out of livermore and get on the roads now and you might see unusual tracks. a lot more than you typically see. bay bridge you get a live look and you see a nice flow. no major problems and you see the volume increasing and the lights turned on as scheduled. we will watch it carefully. it could cause ripple effects throughout the bay area. >> sounds good. we are on this roller coaster where we are getting hot and we are back to the cool. up and down. >> amazing that last week we were talking about the temperatures and this morning it's a different story. we have wind and drizzle and 61 degrees and a west wind at 16. nay not as windy. san francisco the winds are cranking up. i just checked the airport and we are seeing arriving flights

delayed by an hour. having trouble with the wind and reduced visibility. call ahead with the arriving flights pocket ets of drizzle and we stay breezy. not much warming today. 60s to 70s and between now and wednesday, we will be locked in and maybe a chance of hill top showers. what is happening to our east is stunning in terms of the lightning. you look at the sierra and this is a one-hour loop. instability increases and we may see pop up showers and maybe areas south into the range with the cool and breezy day. take the jacket with you and keep it on all day. 69 degrees and low 60s in san francisco. here you go. the seven-day forecast looks breezy and mild through the middle of the week. the weekend ahead, that looks warmer. 80s starting saturday.

there. mike has an eye on the commute and how it looks for the day. rob is checking out the temperatures that should be fairly mild. he will take a peek at what's in store for the forecast coming up. new this morning, the state's highest court will decide if governor schwarzenegger is allowed to send state workers home without pay. the state supreme court will issue the furlough ruling at 10:00 this morning. it affects more than 200,000 state workers who were forced to take unpaid days off in february of last year. that saved the state $3 billion. they were halted earlier this year and reinstated in august when they could not reach a budget deal. thousands of san jose school students are going on a week long fall break this morning. a month after the summer break ended. tloeds through friday, schools are closed as teachers go on furlough. district officials voted to accept one week without pay to safety district $5 million and

avoid layoffs. the u.s. supreme court will start a term that will be anything but typical with three women on the bench. elena kagan will sit out about a third of the cases to avoid conflicts stemming from her former stent at the justice department. >> eight members of the court deciding these cases. there is the chance of a tie. if that happens, the supreme court is not going to be able to decide the issue and has to come back in another case probably in either year. >> the justices will have a full docket. one of the biggest issues to decide is whether gay protesters at military funerals pror tenthed under freedom of speech. >> investigators will work to figure out the cause of a massive gulf oil spill. the hearings will be near new orleans. they killed 11 workers and led to 206 million gallons of oil

being released from bp's well. >> one cell phone carrier will give money back. verizon will pay out $90 million in refunds. they are because users were wrongly charged for data sessions or internet use. they will get about $2 to $6 credit on the october or november bill. if you are no longer with verizon, you will still get a check. look for that in the mail. >> checks of a different kind. you have 11 shopping weeks until christmas. >> scott, some new tablets might be in stockings this year. >> certainly the manufacturers hope. you have the apple i pad, one of the most popular consumer devices ever. in the past couple of weeks, we have seen a couple of new ones. the playbook doesn't have a network connection built in and

harvest. local winemakers are trying to decide the perfect time to pick the crop. >> they start today in the livermore valley. today in the bay's bob redell is live and how far behind are they? >> about three to four weeks by some estimates. different wineries are picking at different times. once the sun comes up, we had hot temps in the 100 degree temps. that boosted the sugar levels. calf and his family have been making wins forever. >> bringing in the warm temperature was great. a lot of days where we are used to seeing 92 and a lot cooler getting the days at 100 plus

two san jose firefighters are credited for helping get

people out of harm's way as the fire ripped through an apartment building. it started before 10:00 yesterday near almaden and coleman avenue. two off duty firefighters happened to be near by and saw the fire and ran up stairs to get families out to safety. the two heroes joined us live to tell us their story. thanks for being in the right place at the right time. amazing. what did you say? voting no on measure b would make it easy for the public safety services and we saw a big calming smoke and we thought we would check and make sure everybody was save . >> you started banging on doors and grabbed the garden hose?

>> we did. >> we ran to the building and made sure all the families and everyone had gotten out and one item was screaming he needed his medicine out of one of the apartments, i ran back in and got his medicine out and brought it back to him, but proceeded to clear the rest and the electricity and the gas and cleared that neighboring building in case that building was to catch on fire. we handled our business and the first arriving engineer companies arrive and saw the -- when we got there, it was heavy fire and flame coming out of the apartment that they could go right to work and put out the fire. >> you did so much of the preliminary work without having protective gear or anything. right place at the right time. you were safe as well. . >> it was hot. we had to duck down a few times. we did what we had to do. >> it was wonderful that you helped those people out.

the line that runs along the median highway 87 will shave five minutes off the total commute time. the first express train leaves the station at 7:16 this morning. people are talking this morning about the verbal sparring between meg whitman and jerry brown during this weekend's debate. accusations flew as the candidates spent less time on the issues and more time on the controver controversy. >> i didn't want to hit you on this, but when you try to evade responsibility, you are going around saying employers must be accountable for hiring unlawful people. there ought to be rates on businesses. no path to citizenship. no path. young latino who is may have lived her their whole lives and got a's in high school are barred from fresno state. >> the hardest decision i made

zulry through prayer. she was told to bring the jewelry to an abandoned house. the more show brought, the more prosperous she would be. the scammers were gone and so was her jewelry. there may be other victims as well. san diego could be the next city under investigation where massive payouts for a small number of employees. they will release information that 10 former employees will split $61 million in retirement money. part of the pension from san diego. it was sparked by the discovery where city employees allegedly took millions in loans and high paychecks from city funds. plans to bring the americas cup to san francisco could set sail today. the board could consider a deal

here in the united states and one person was arrested outside paris this morning for a bomb scare at a train station. turned out not to be anything. this was last friday. they had several of those and this all leads up to why we now have a travel alert here in the united states. if you are traveling to europe, the government, the state department said you need to be on alert. not necessarily to cancel your plans, but that if you are traveling to popular tourist a tracks or if you will be in the subway or train stations or airports or sea ports or other places where tourists tend to gather. you should be vigilant and be on the look out for anything suspicious. the government has known of a general threat and believe there germans or british citizens in afghanistan. perhaps working with osama bin laden and planning some sort of attack that is similar to what happened in india. coordinated attacks. they don't know when or where,

but they are warning americans to be on the look out. reporting live from washington, live from washington today in the bay. >> closer to home, many bay area travelers are learn being the warning. christie smith has what they are saying. good morning, christie. >> a mixed bag among travelers. people who are quite worried and others are takeing it in stride to canal a super eastern vacation. we can tell you we took a walk through both of the terminals and no specific note or warning posted for travelers about this. the manager here tells us that most of the international flights leave about 1:00 or 2:00 in the morning for places like mexico or a connector and on to europe. the alert stopped short of saying don't go. it underscores the importance of staying alert in public places.

only blocking the slow lane. the fact that someone left the scene after a person was injured. if you saw anything through the area, call it in before the chp. it will slow down around 7:20 or 7:30 in the morning. look at the northbound 87 slowing. northbound 87, the alternate for that. taking you all the way up into downtown. san mateo bridge shows the effect of the wind. i will check on that and westbound is also affected by a high wind advisory. we have gusty winds and drizzle and what else out there? >> continuing we have flight delays due to low clouds and gusty winds that right now in oakland west of 24 and 16 through san francisco and obviously those winds all the way into livermore.

mostly 50s around the bay area. weather relatively calm. the thundershowers flairing up and south of the diablo range and north bay hills, increasing instability and may be enough to bring out an isolated shower. temperatures will be cool enough to keep the jacket with you. highs near 70 and 71 for los gatos. 71 as well towards livermore. last week at this time we had high temperatures near 100. not the case this week. 73 around san francisco and 67 for oakland and low to mid 70s out towards the trivalley. between now and wednesday, we will stay unsettled, breezy and cool and a chance of a shower and for friday, high pressure should build in. towards the weekend, we are talking 80s. mild and windy especially for the next couple of mornings.
