good morning. i'm chris sanchez. next at 7:00 on "today in the bay" a sketch of a man a 10-year-old says tried to snatch her and her baby sister. we'll show you who police are looking for now and the details on that. and the giants will try to take a lead in their series with the atlanta braves. what the players are saying and who's taking the mound today. plus a south bay soldier, one of the last out of iraq, is home and he shares his story with us. this is "today in the bay." good sunday morning. take a live look from our san bruno mountain camera toward the city, a little bit of fog there,

man threatened to shoot their family if they didn't get into his car. the girls stay the man has a gray goatee and that he's missing one of his top teeth. the attempted abduction happefr afternoon when the girls were walking their dog. police say the man grabbed the 5-year-old by her shirt but her 10-year-old sister yanked the girl away from him. they managed to run away. the man managed to drive away. the girls tell police he was driving a green older four door jeep with a tire mounted on the back and say the left headlight could be damaged and had a blue and white license plate with the letter "g" in it and a number 5. if any of this sounds familiar, you should call pinole police. a fire destroyed a local radio station and at one point threatened the famed eggo factory in san jose. fire fighters got it out just before 1:30 this morning, but it started around 5:00 yesterday afternoon. near highway 101 and mckee road in san jose. it started as a car fire which spread along the brush along the

highway and event vily to ksjx which is 1500 a.m. people inside the eggo factory, the kellogg's factory, had to evacuate because of intense smoke and wind. the factory did reopen last night. fire fighters say it took a while to contain the flames because there was a possibility that hazardous materials were inside the factory. no deaths or injuries are reported. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. giants fever will spike again this afternoon. game three against the atlanta braves starts around 1:30. the giants got ready with a light workout in atlanta yesterday. the series is now tied at one game apiece and the giants say they are ready to bounce back. >> realistically, our jobs don't change. we come out, we're ready to rock. they're competitive. we knew they were going to fight us. they got us yesterday. we'll see where it takes us. >> jonathan sanchez will face

>> meg whitman told the crowd she can't win the election without the latino vote. no mention, though, of her illegal maid scandal from last week. a reminder tuesday evening we are airing the governor's debate between meg whitman and democrat jerry brown. coverage starts at 6:00 on air and on-line. you can always get our latest election coverage on our website, nbcbayarea.com. click on prop 0. more than 200 east bay homes will be on the auction block at oakland convention center this morning. each one of them the result of a foreclosure. this morning louder rumblings of an investigation into the foreclosure crisis. attorneys jenle from 40 u.s. states may probe banks whether they allowed faulty paperwork in those proceedings. a source says an official announcement could come on tuesday. iowa's attorney general will likely lead that investigation. we are still working to find out

whether california is one of the 40 states said to be involved. the investigation could put more pressure on banks to suspend foreclosures, which what is bank of america did on friday. it was the first bank to do so. how about that for a thrill. fleet week sails on today. that was just a taste of the blue angels which took to the sky yesterday. hundreds of thousands of people packed san francisco's waterfront for a little glimpse of the parade of ships and the air show. if you missed it you do have another chance. there is another air show this afternoon starting at 1:00. the blue angels are due to fly from 3:00 to 4:00. also on tap today, all of the ships will open for tours starting at 9:00 this morning. and the first marin division band will perform in san francisco's huntington park at 6:00 tonight. still ahead on "today in the bay" three gay men tortured and police are rounding up gang members they say are

good morning to you. take a live look at san jose, the sun is starting to rise. the is going to be a nice day the rest of the week is warming. we'll check with craig herrera in a little bit. uc berkeley graduate released from an iranian prison is back home in the east bay and although sarah shourd is no longer a captive she says she is still not free. nbc bay area's kim hberly terry has her story and plea for help. >> free all three. free all three. free all three. >> reporter: sarah shourd says while she is physically free, emotionally she is trapped in iran where her fiance and friend are still being detained. >> the image of them sitting in

their cell side by side, is very -- is something that is with me every moment. >> reporter: in her first public appearance in the bay area since her release september 14th, shourd called on iranian officials to let shane bauer and josh fattal go. the three uc berkeley graduates were arrested in july of 2009 near the iran/iraq border. iranian authorities accuse them of illegally crossing the border and spying. shourd, denies the allegations. she says she was told she was being released for diplomatic reasons and now feels she must be the voice for shane and josh. >> a lot of ways i'm experime experimenting what the families have been experiencing throughout this entire ordeal. now ale i'm on the other side a there's no second i don't think about shane and josh and their situation. there's so many ways i'm carrying the prison walls inside of me and that my separation from shane and josh is an extension of the punishment i experienced when i was still

there. >> she can't enjoy her freedom without them and is working every day to procure their release. today shourd and her family and friends gathered to write the two men letters. >> my dearest friend josh. >> dear shane. >> i know you'll come back and i'll see you again but it's never soon enough when it should be today. it should be today. >> you deserve to be free and you deserve to be reunited with sarah. >> i know how you must be longing to see her again and i'm sure that's the hope that keeps you going day to day. >> reporter: these letters will be sent to shane and josh but it's unclear how many of them will actually get to them. shourd says only a fraction of the letters and books sent to her during her detainment were actually received. but copies have been made of each letter so the men can read them when and if they return home. kemberly terry. bay area news. coming up next the giants are back on the field today. see how they're getting ready for game three against the braves, coming up. live right now over san francisco. look at that, a little bit of

let's sing a little song that's a little quiet for us this morning. thanks for -- >> air guitar. >> thanks for joining us this morning. you will like the forecast especially if you like warm temperatures because they're coming. >> exactly. it's october. sometimes we warm up nicely. a couple 90s by the time we get into wednesday and thursday some of the warmer spots. today the big story if you're visiting, welcome. look at this, this is a great shot. we'll start off in san francisco. a lot of people in town for the football games today, also for fleet week. yeah, we'll get rid of some of this fog in a matter of hours and then we are looking at plenty of sunshine around the bay area. there's a little bit of haze right over oakland there, as we look out live over the east side of the bay. same for the south end of the bay. we have a couple high clouds drifting overhead and that's been basically the story. a live shot for san jose

downtown. now temperatures at this hour have been in the 40s and 50s. some of those 40s have been into the north end of the bay. most of us are in the 50s. relative humidity little higher right now and as we go through the afternoon enjoy that sunshine. we'll actually manage a couple 80s today. this being the satellite, the storm track headed well into the north into the pacific northwest and north of there into bc. a lot of cold air with this storm but notice the line going up. a ridge of high pressure right there. every time we get that around california especially this time of year we get the offshore winds. most of those are into southern california, central and southern california. we're getting enough northerly wind to push the fog out of the area, not really forming. breezy at times right along the immediate coast. we'll manage mid and upper 60s along the coast. 70s and 80s around the rim, it's those inland spots that get closer to the mid 80s today, tomorrow, tack on a few more degrees and those of you still waiting to hold on to some of the summer sunshine it was a mild summer around the bay area

we'll manage close to 90 by the time we get into tuesday and wednesday. nice day ahead. here's the forecast for the afternoon. 73 in san francisco, hitting 70s, low 70s there yesterday. then as we get right around the rim of the bay, you're got some low and mid 80s and then closer to livermore and antioch a couple low to mid 80s, concord and walnut creek, napa and sotomayor m sonoma. sun set 6:39 today. we've got the fleet week forecast for you. just gorgeous. it's this time of year when you can get quite a bit of fog. not the case this year. no cancellations. i don't see any. that's really going to be the story through monday and tuesday. here's the seven-day forecast. we talk about this warmer weather. maybe some people calling in sick on tuesday and wednesday to go to the beach. why not. we have 70s out there close to 90 on tuesday and wednesday, cool office a little next week. look at that, nice. >> a lot for fleet week and the eagles game against the 49ers and the chargers against the

raiders. >> picture-perfect weather. yesterday you had stanford at home, a lot of the southern california people here. >> they're going this looks like southern california. >> exactly. >> thanks. also new this morning, eight people are in custody in new york in connection with a horrific anti-gay gang attack that happened in the bronx this week. police still looking for a ninth suspect. reporter glen zimmerman from our new york affiliate shows us what state, city and community leaders are doing to end the violence. >> your son here. >> reporter: 17-year-old boy is one of the nine suspected gang members who are accused of extreme acts of violence fueled by anti-gay hate. >> hyou talked to him about it. >> nothing about that. >> reporter: he waited outside of the bronx criminal courthouse with his son's wife who is five months pregnant. >> he was with me that day. >> all day?

>> yeah, all day. >> however when pressed she could not remember which day it was. one thing is clear, local leaders are speaking out after a recent rash of hate crimes have plagued the city from staten island to the stone wall in at the heart of the gay movement in greenwich village. >> nothing can justify that mindless, vicious violence. >> reporter: outside of the apartment building where the nine suspected gang members reportedly tortured gay men, governor paterson joined christine quinn and others to make a stand. >> you are attacking our new york city society. you are attacking the right to be an american. >> think of what you are robbed of if you can't walk down the street without fear of the fact that the way god made you, is going to move someone else to violence. >> reporter: in talking to police officers, you get a sense that this may not be an established gang, but more of a group of people who gather from the neighborhood who refer to themselves as the latin king

rangers or the tampa bay rays. the giants have to win two more games to throw their own party and they get a chance to win one of those games today. nbc bay area's lauren scott has that and also some pretty exciting college football highlights in your morning sports. >> a very good morning to you. the giants are ready to rebound in atlanta. game three against the braves and laura filed this report late last night from atlanta to bring us the very latest. >> reporter: thanks. it's been a wild 24 hours for the giants. first there was the extra inning heartbreaking loss last night at at&t park and then bright and early this morning they flew across the country here to atlanta and as soon as they landed they headed straight to turner field so they could hit the field for a workout. what a light workout it was, which makes sense because we're dealing with a little jet lag here. they hit the field for only 30 minutes this evening, one of the shortest workouts this season. the biggest challenge right now besides the fatigue factor is

from atlanta throughout the evening starting after the 49ers sunday night game against the eagles which is also right here on nbc bay area. big day yesterday in college football. number one alabama falls at south carolina while on the farm, stanford looking to beat usc for the first time in the past four seasons. watching trojans take a lead in the fourth quarter that cardinals would take back as nate whitaker boots home the game winner and stanford improves to 5-1 with the 37-35 win. cal hosting ucla at strawberry canyon. bears quarterback riley had one touchdown rushing and one passing. here, to freshman keenan allen from ten yards out. the bears run away with it, blasting the browns 35-7. cal now 3-2 with their first conference win. san jose state on the road, facing number 21 nevada. keeping it close into the third quarter. but the wolfpack brandished their pistol and pull away for the 35-13 victory.

all right. with a win in d.c. last night, the san jose earthquakes are headed to the mls playoffs while in stockholm sweden, the sharks going back to back against columbus and who knew pippi longstocking was still popular in nordic country. tied at 2 goes into overtime. in goal in the blue jackets get one past them for the game winner, 3-2, columbus takes it. the sharks head home for their opener at the tank, that is next saturday. all right. that is a look at sports. have yourself a great day. >> i stayed up too late watching that usc game. it was exciting, though. the raiders take on the chargers today. that starts at 1:15 at the coliseum. the raiders will try to end a very long losing streak against the san diego chargers. they have lost 14 straight times to the chargers. dating back to september of 2003. come on, raiders. let's change that up. federal air marshals and barts police officers will patrol the b.a.r.t. station

to be warm everywhere else. i'll have the details in just a bit. new this morning we are getting our first look at the sketch of a man police say tried to kidnap two little girls in pinole. we keep telling you about this it happened on friday because he is still at large. the girls say the man looked like this, they say he threatened them, threatened it to shoot their family. the girls told the police the man has a goatee that is graying and he has a missing upper tooth. the attempted abduction happened friday afternoon. the girls were walking near sunnyview and knob hill avenue. the man eventually grabbed a 5-year-old girl by her shirt but her 10-year-old sister yanked her away from him. they ran. the man drove away. the girls tell police the man drives an older green four-door jeep with a tire mounted on the back. the left headlight could be damaged. they say it had a blue and white license plate with a letter "g" and number 5 in it. if any of this sounds familiar, you should call pinole police.

afternoon near highway 101 and mckey road in san jose. it started as a car fire which spread to the brush along the highway. then eventually to the asian language radio station ksjx. people inside the kelloggs factory had to evacuate because of intense smoke and wind. the factory did reopen last night. no deaths or injuries are reported and the cause of the fire still being pinpointed, still under investigation. pg&e crews worked through the night on a cable failure that caused an underground explosion in san francisco. the explosion happened at sacramento and battery streets at the corner of embarcadero around 4:00 yesterday afternoon. reportedly blew a manhole cover straight into the air. the force of the blast broke a few windows in nearby restaurants and blew out power to more than a dozen businesses in the financial district. though electricity was restored overnight, no one was injured in the incident. a bay area soldier who got some national attention is back home from iraq. he was on the last convoy out of

that country. when it left, it brought an end to combat mission troops for u.s. soldiers. >> do you want to open up the umbrella? >> reporter: on a peaceful day the dewit family prepares a welcome home party for a soldier who witnessed history. >> we're going home. >> reporter: on august 18th lieutenant dewit was on the last military convoy out of iraq. his journey broadcast live to the world. >> the mood initially was just let's get home, let's get this over with. you know, there's 360 miles between us and being home. >> reporter: then somewhere along that desert highway the main supply route in and out of baghdad, the realization that it wasn't just a journey home for dewit and his men but a journey out of iraq for the united states. >> that's one you're like this is something a little more than just driving out. >> reporter: he says the ride was so uneventful, almost boring, he and his men had a hard time staying awake. there were restless nights for

those who loved this soldier. >> i tried not to think about it every day, but it was every so often, what would i do if, if that knock on the door came. you know, and you just can't imagine how you deal with it. >> reporter: the dewits did not get that knock, but the families of nearly 5,000 other u.s. military men and women did, which makes the simple pleasures all the more meaningful. >> it's the difference from leaping sleeping on a cot to a nice mattress at night. being able to wake up in the morning and seeing my wife instead of having to call her on skype. those things are nice adjustments but it does take time. >> reporter: one month after dewit and his wife married they were in iraq. two weeks after his first wedding anniversary he was on the convoy headed home. >> i was so proud that they had accomplished so much this year and the year had finally you know had finally come to an end and i remember seeing on tv and just feeling like that's my baby! >> reporter: in the year ahead

dewit will enjoy time with his wife and their new puppy and then he expects to be back in training after christmas and to be redeployed within a year or two, a commitment he feels good about today. >> i know what we did change iraq for the better. lieutenant dewit the examines he will likely head to the conflict in afghanistan as an assignment and he is ready for that when the time comes. coming up next on "today in the bay" a major investigation is under way into a bus crash that injured dozens of people. we'll show you what happened coming up next. also the wait is almost over. find out when crews hope to pull 33 chilean miners up to the surface, next. over the bay and over the city of san francisco on a lovely start to this sunday morning. the rescue of 33 chilean miners trapped since august will start on wednesday. yesterday crews in chile reached the small room where the men have been living since that mine collapsed on august 5th. an american driller led that operation and he celebrated yesterday after the sirens went off, signaling the start of the last phase of the rescue. >> we made it into the gallery. that's incredible. the whole place exploded. it was great. >> rescuers will now lower steel cages down the drilled shaft and they will start raising each miner one by one and then they'll head to the hospital. pakistan reopened a main supply route in afghanistan overnight. it's the route that nato uses to get supplies to u.s. forces and their allies fighting the taliban. militants took advantage of the black cade and -- blockade and torched several trucks. pakistan closed the border to nato on september 30th.

apparently it was a protest of a u.s. helicopter strike that killed two pakistani soldiers. also this morning, the u.s. announced it killed eight people with two drone strikes in pakistan. the area of the strikes is home to a militant group which has been known to attack nato troops. a big parade and big news in north korea this morning. leader kim jong-il and his heir apparent kim jong un appeared together at a parade. kim jong un's most public appearance so far. his father announced he will be the next leader of north korea. that announcement two weeks ago. the parade was to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the workers party. hope this homeowner in montana had insurance. take a look at this. a huge boulder broke off from a hill above and crashed right into this house in billings. the homeowner was inside at the time but was not injured. no estimate on the damage just yet. heavy rain left the rocks

this happened overnight. getting more details for you later on today. dozens of people are injured this morning. a bus packed with 75 people ran off the road in chicago and crashed into a tree. christian far shows us what investigators are looking for. >> reporte >> the bus just crashed. >> reporter: a scary situation fort 70 passengers traveling on cta's bus saturday evening. for some reason the driver lost control and crashed into several trees along lakeshore drive. sending more than half of its passengers to the hospital. >> people were kind of toppling over each other. >> had the trees not abouten there and we all not on the bus to distribute the weight, it would have flipped. >> reporter: the number 6 jackson express was heading southbound on lake shore when it ended up in the trees near the 31st street exit. within minutes the chicago fire department was on the scene of the crash with 21 ambulances, transported 37 passengers to

various hospitals, four in critical condition. >> apparently the pole and her didn't get along on the bus drive. the pole, her leg went into the pole. >> multiple contusions, possible fractures. normal injuries you sustain in a motor vehicle accident. >> reporter: cta officials say it is too early in their investigation to figure out what happened. passengers have already started to speculate about how and why this driver lost control. >> we didn't know that up front someone was holding on to the wheel with her to help her. apparently a lot. she was pressing the brake, the bus driver and the bus wouldn't stop. >> the operator has been spoken to. we're not done having our interview with her. we'll gather all that information and be able to better understand what it is that may have caused it. >> investigators will look at the bus's black box to figure out whether that driver was speeding before the crash.

for the game today. the raiders, yeah, raiders in town and we should have a nice afternoon for a game. sunscreen needed everywhere. not only at the beaches and inland but across the south end of the bay. san jose, there you go. that is city hall and more sunshine there. currently we are sitting with mostly 50s around most of the bay area. we had 70s and 80s yesterday. today we'll see more of those. in fact, today's going to be about two to almost five degrees warmer than it was yesterday. yesterday was gorgeous around here. 56 in san francisco, low 50s for the north end of the bay. and a couple of mid and upper 50s for the south end of the bay. this afternoon, we see a couple of high clouds streaming up overhead, most of it is coming from the tail end of this storm moving into the pacific northwest. not going to come our direction at all. a couple high clouds during the evening hours but the sunshine is in place, the rain is going to all of our friends in seattle. so they will be dealing with the rain today and tomorrow. for us more sunshine, the ridge gets stronger each day. we go from the upper 60s, mid

and upper 60s along the beaches to the low and mid 70s by the time we get into tuesday and wednesday. around the rim of the bay near 80 degrees. we're in the mid 80s by the time we get into that tuesday/wednesday time frame and then a little warmer, close to 90 degrees in in some of the waerm spots. los angeles, 89 degrees. those offshore winds are a little stronger once you get into the central part of the state. closer to monterey bay, caramel by the sea, over enjoying some sunshine there. we're in the 70 degree range in redding, through sacramento, mid 80s to near 90. 73 san francisco, 81 in san jose, low 80s, low to mid 80s for the north end of the bay. same for san ramon. 85 livermore, sun set 6:39. also we've got fleet week, it's been a gorgeous sta rts to it and we continue with it through the end, near 70. mid 70s across san francisco. and wanted to tell you the halloween is so much fun.
