in the national league championship. in the top of the second in atlanta, the giants score when the ball gets past a guy named brooks conrad. a flyball right here. he dropped it. the giants are in the lead, 1-0. jonathan sanchez had a big night. he didn't give up a hit until the sixth inning, but he gave up 1 and it was a big one. a two-run home run and now the braves take back the lead in the ninth. aubrey huff singles and tying and then another error. guess who. it's again right through again. three errors in the game and sanchez scores on that and the giants go on to win 3-2. >> to come back like that after a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth, that can take the wind out of your sails and these guys came back and found a way

to get it done. that's a great win. >> it is and tonight's game starts after 4:30. getting the start for the giants and derek who lost game one starting for atlanta. >> more than 200 east bay homes are going up for auction. each one is the result of a foreclosure. the auction is in modesto. they hosted one yesterday and a nationwide freeze on foreclosures is gaining foot across the country. an official said the white house administration is against the idea. the federal housing administration commissioner said the market is just too fragile for the freeze. the talks continued with news that some sm banks use phony paperwork to force foreclosures. attorney generals from at least 40 states are expected to launch a joint investigation perhaps as early as tomorrow. jerry brown and meg whitman are gating ready for the final debate before the election and go head to head in san rafael. it starts at 6:30 and airs here

1964 until 1966. also new, governor schwarzenegger is in russia on a trade mission to help companies. he has a delegation of business leaders and venture capitalists with him to help establish connections in russia. >> there so many opportunities here in russia. you just look at this and say oh, my god, this is like it's almost like look at the gold mine. >> russia launched their own version of silicon valley in a moscow suburb. they will visit the town later today. >> killers on the loose in the bay area. police are looking for the shooters who killed two p tple in a san leandro golf club at 10:00 saturday night at a restaurant in the monarch bay golf club which is directly south of the oakland airport. the restaurant manager said the place was rented to people throwing a birthday party. four were shot and two died. police are asking anyone with

information to come forward. many of the witnesses scattered as police arrived. a man shot in a san francisco nightclub is expected to survive. that shooting happened in a cafe on indiana street friday night. san francisco police are still looking for the suspects. 23-year-old man went into the hospital in critical condition, but she improving. a new report said the same commission investigating the explosion fined for sfrt safety violations. they did a review and found that the california public utilities commission ignored several pg&e infractions. the commission regulates all utilities in the state. they accounted for almost 60% of probable violations between 2004 and 2009. they did not fine pg&e once during that time. >> developing news now.

great britain said an aid worker held hostage by terrorists may have been killed by her rescuers. >> we are monitoring that. >> an explosion killed her, but we are not sure who set the explosion off. her captors in eastern afghanistan set off a bomb, but there reports it could have been a hand grenade thrown by an american soldier. she was kidnapped in late september. the british foreign secretary said while the rescue attempt was extremely dangerous, it was really the only option considering what terrorists have done to hostages in the past. we don't mention it often, but the war in afghanistan is a team effort. nato said the attack was an attack on all alliances. germans and australians and greeks have been fighting. this morning the bodies of four italian soldiers returned home to honors. italy has about 3,000 troops involved in the fighting.

the blue angels roaring across the bay area skies over the weekend in honor of fleet week. the show is not over yet. san francisco's tradition continues today and the perfect weather is drawing more people. this morning, lady washington departs in oakland headed for pier 40 across the bay in san francisco. ships will be open for tourists at 9:00 and there will be a fitness anywhere challenge at 10:30 and a battle of local high school bands in golden gate park at 11:00 and tomorrow you can watch the parade of ships as they depart. >> always a lot of fun and so much to see there. >> hopefully the morning commute has proven to be an easy one. >> over the weekend, all of fleet week crowds. if you are joining us this morning, a note that late washington is arriving at pier 40. south of the ferry building where it says even numbered piers. even number and odd numbers are

good morning to you. a live look outside, it will be a warm one. temperatures expected to be a high of 79 in san francisco. 82 in oakland. a greater chance for fire danger in san jose with the greater chance of fire danger. chris? >> good morning to you. if you drive around the bay area, you will see a lot of dry

vegetation like what you see behind me. that is not going to change. we are going to see a ramp up in the temperatures and see the wins changing, particularly over the east bay and north bay hills. that means the warm dry air coming inland over the hillsides are going to dry things out and make it a bit more dangerous. it is that very combination that contributed to the oakland firestorm of 1991 that was devastating for the east bay hills. we know from history that 25 people were kill and 3300 other families lost their homes and apartments and condos. the firestorm cost this bay area $1.5 billion. here are dips if you live in the vulnerable areas. 30 feet out and particularly clear, but out to 100 feet if you live in one of the dangerous spots. if you need to clear the area,

make sure you mow early in the morning or late at night when you are less likely to spark a fire. clear the leaves out from your gutters so your roof is not vulnerable and come up with an evacuation plan. know what you are going to do in the event of a fire. the red flag warn suggest in effect and will continue through wednesday morning at 6:00 in the morning. on a side note, the hot temperatures will stick around and if there is a game five for the giants, it's going to be hot in more ways than one. >> thanks a lot, chris. >> new this morning, an elementary school where a man opened fire will reopen. two girls were shot in the arm north of san diego. the girls were treated and released. police finished their investigation and turned them back over to school leaders. the suspect is 41-year-old brendan and is in jail. an update to an amber alert.

a 24-year-old man is under arrest suspected of helping to abduct two anaheim boys. police believe the children's father and grandfather kidnapped them. police arrested david nicholas at his home in monrovia yesterday. 4-year-old jacob and 2-year-old justin were kidnapped from an alley outside their apartment complex in front of their mother. the boys are still missing and police are searching for their father, 23-year-old abraham and their father, 52-year-old luis mendoz fernandez. a republican candidate in new york is on the hot seat about what he said about homosexuality. >> don't misquote me as wanting to hurt homosexuals in any way. that would be a lie. my approach is live and let live. i just think my children and your children would be much better off and much more successful getting married and

raising a family. i don't want them to be brain washed into thinking that homosexuality is an equally valid or successful option. it isn't. >> that is karl paladi in, o in new york. he met with jewish leaders and said he would veto gay marriage or civil union bill if elected. he will explain his perspective in an interview coming up with matt lauer on the today show. you can see that at 7:05. eight people are facing charges for what officials call the most brutal hate crimes they have ever seen. the suspects were arraigned a day after the arrest for a vicious attack. the crime happened at an abandoned apartment a week ago. a gang lashed out after learning that a recruit into the gang is gay. they attacked and tortured a man over several hours.

go. pollsters say who wins may be determined by who votes. imagine that. >> the progress for peace continues in the mideast. the afghan president admits he is talking about securing peace in his country. the former afghan president is heading up a task with talking to insurgent groups. it is possible that any peace accord would include moving out of the region. >> the latest peace prize winner's wife is in an apartment building in beijing. officials lead her visit her husband in prison over the weekend. he won the peace prize for advocating democracy and the wife has been serving an 11-year sentence and not allowed to leave the apartment since she was able to come home. we are seeing more and more of the man who is supposed to be the next leader of north korea. he showed up hours after making his first public appearance at a

parade. his father, kim jung ilpromoted him to a-star general and announced him as his successor. no one knows his age, but the government thinks she younger than 26. great news for the trapped miners in chile, but the good news sparked an argument. they are arguing who will be the last to leave. the good news is they may begin leaving in a few days, not near christmas as estimated. whoever comes out last gets the world record for the longest time spent underground. they are playing the part down, saying the argument is about unselfish reasons. >> many of them mentioned that they wanted to be the last in the line. the last. number 33rd. >> they want their brothers to go first? >> that is correct. >> the miner dos not get to determine the order of who comes out when. medics will decide based on

health issues. back to the san francisco 49ers. as we mentioned, they lost another and they are 0-5. a talk with team president and the coach's job is not in jeopardy. >> jed york said mike singletary's job is not at risk no matter what the team record is. what is less clear is the future of the team's quarterback. mikeville a press conference this afternoon to discuss among other things smith's future. for jed york, a testify season. he was asked if he talks to his uncle. ed won five super bowls. >> i talk to my uncle and the others a lot of times where you call up and say okay, we are 0-4. what do you think? he gives great advice.

the national league championship series. all they have to do is win one more. today in the bay's christie smith is live in san francisco with more on giants fever. good morning. >> good morning to you. it is a fever. people this morning in san francisco act like they are recovering for something. nothing comes easy to the giants. they did find a way to come back and get it done much to the delight of giants fans. perhaps a mixture of skill and luck. this morning we are talking with fans at the flower mart up early with the nail biter in the series. all the games have been decided by a single run. that was the case yesterday. fans now coming up with all sorts of ways to cope with the roller coaster ride. how do you keep your nerves in check when you are watching the series like this? >> i pick tomatoes and i come back and i couldn't take it. i was in the back yard picking

and the flame quickly spread to a nearby brush and destroyed a building that houses the radio station. firefighters did not have the fire out until 1:30 sunday morning. they claim the engine that would have responded first was cut and a back up unit was dealing with a medical emergency. the firefighters are willing to make concessions. more than 50 firefighters are making the money working two to three days a week. excessive benefits and guaranteed pennings are more than they can afford and the union is not willing to change. jerry brown and meg whitman are 36 hours away from their final debate. brown will be backed by his latest endorsement, the san jose mercury news. meg whitman is getting support from key republicans. rudy giuliani was campaigning

for the former ceo. it will air live here on bay area and on our website, nbcbayarea.com. predebate coverage will start at 6:00 and after the debate, we will have indepth analysis. >> two east bay cities have measures on the ballot that would not only raise the sales tax, but push it to the highest amount allowed by the state. if voter approve measure r, the sales tax in union city would be 10.25%, making them the highest in contra conta county. the mayor said the measure is crucial and if it does not pass, city services will be cut. the chamber of commerce also endorse measure r. >> this would help tide them over with funding that could not be syphoned off by sacramento. it's a big source of our troubles because the state comes in and takes money away. >> the former mayor opposes measure r and said the city has

temperatures of 29 in san jose and 57 in san francisco. weather headlines talk about a warming trend that will follow us through the middle of the week. 80s and 90s inland and the dry offshore winds north of the east bay hills. a fire weather watch likely being upgraded to a red flag warning. sonoma and napa county and marin as well and the east bay hilltops. focusing in on san francisco, the sea breeze plain stops over the next couple of days. we will have an excessive heat watch for tuesday and wednesday in san francisco where temperatures may get close to 90. 85 in san jose and 90 for morgan hill and livermore. what the areas have to watch and be the hilltops, things will turn dry and breeze breezy for the afternoon. you will see through the seven-day forecast for the first half of the week looks hot and dry and warm out towards the coast. we cool off towards the weekend. back to you. >> thanks, rob. taxpayers are footing a hefty bill with college student

students who dropout. taxpayers are spending billions of dollars whenever students leave school after only one year. between 2003 and 2008, the american institutes for research said states that $6.2 billion to four-year yfrs to help pay for the education of freshmen who end up not returning for a second year. the federal government also spent $1.5 billion and states spent 1.4 billion on grants for student who is didn't start their sophomore year. >> 6:41 and the justice department is battling to save a law that makes it illegal to lie about being a war hero. government lawyers are appealing in san francisco and denver that the law is an unconstitutional restriction on free speech. the fight can go all the way to the u.s. supreme court. the stolen valor act makes it a crime to lie about having winning a medal. it's up to a year in jail.

with how much is too much time. tracie? >> the american academy of pediatrics recommends no more than two hours of screen time for children under 18 that. includes tv, videos, dvds or even computer use outside of school. most kids according to surveys are geeing twice that or more. now this new british study of 10 and 11-year-olds fines for every child who gets two hours or more of screen time a day, they are at higher risk for psychological problems. 60% higher. we are talking about emotional problems and issues with piers, hyper activity. that doubles if the screen time is mixed. apparently the members are not affected if your child gets more time outside. right now in the united states on average, kids are spending four hours a day in front of a screen. more than half of them have tvs in their bedrooms and many of

them spend more time watching than anything else but sleep. this could be dangerous for your kids. they recommend that parents spend a lot of time monitoring not only what kids are watching, but how much time they spend in front of a screen. for some it's up to six hours a day and that's not including computer time at school. a message for parents to beware. >> always a good reminder. thanks, tracie. >> are 6:46. in case you missed the report, all the kids should watch as much traffic as possible or something like that. at the east shore freeway, 19 minutes. not a lot of traffic to watch. approaching the maze, things are looking smooth. we have a blip showing up on northbound 880. i will show you that in a second. i want to show you the bay bridge toll messrs.a. look at the live shot itself. almost nobody waiting in the cash lanes.

look how light the traffic is and no metering lights. in oakland, look at the live shot. we will show you the volume of traffic. the sensors must be adjusting. i will follow these closely. something unusual is going on as far as the light volume. here's columbus day and a lot of folk dos get it off. they do have the slowing on southbound through sunol. that popped up and the east bay hills are very dry and they get windy and warmer. >> we will be watching the wins around sunol and pleasant ton and the winds going from the higher hilltops dropping down across bat i as the air warms up and dries out. that is not good news. cool this morning with 50s and 60s for most of the bay. the only sign of offshore breezes around santa rosa and the higher hilltops. above 2,000 feet and the offshore wins. this is the reason why we have the fire weather watch at 6:00

this evening for the hills of the north and east bay. it may well get upgraded to a red flag warning by tomorrow. no clouds and high pressure building in on top of us acting like a dome where the air underneath bakes. we see the warming where the air dries out as it moves from the higher hilltops. 80s and warms up into the 90s. pushes that marine air offshore. we see 70s and 80s towards the coast over the next couple of afternoons. highs are 85 in san jose and close to 90 in morgan hill and livermore. near 80 in san francisco. should see mid 80s around oakland and the north bay. highs in the 80s and 90s. today looks warm. believe it or not, tomorrow and wednesday will be very close to record breakers for san francisco. those will be the hottest days of the week. we start to cool off in time for the weekend. a dig drop in temperatures saturday and sunday. >> we keep getting out and thanks, rob. >> it is columbus day today.

a holiday that you likely only have off if you work for the government. what does is it mean for the rest of us. what you will and won't be able to do today. chris? >> good morning to you. bus drivers likely to have columbus day off. most schools around the bay are in session. we found san francisco unified that they are observing columbus day as a holiday today. if you are looking to get your errands done because you have the day off, you may be out of luck if your business takes you to the bank or federal buildings. look at the graphic. banks are going to be closed. federal government closed as well. u.s. postal service not delivering today. the good news is no junk mail at least. you have that going for you. schools will have the day off, but most are in session.

because of the fallout of that arrival on the indigenous people here, a lost folks don't like to celebrate the holiday. school districts have replaced that. here are talking points for you. if you are trying to look smarter on the water and cooler, a lot of school districts have replaced columbus day with indigenous peoples day. it's called peoples day. california is one that doesn't observe it and the other two states are hawaii and nevada. it was eliminated because of budget concerns. in tennessee, they observe columbus day in november, the day after thanksgiving. folks have a nice long holiday after the thanksgiving feast. hopefully maybe that's something that will come our way eventually down the road. i checked around and it looks like all the transportation
