looking at the transamerican pyramid for halloween. i'm kris sanchez. thanks so much for joining us on "today in the bay." craig herrera is here with a look at the forecast. >> i like halloween. that's my favorite time of the year. you have the halloween movies going. 52, san francisco. factor in some of the windchill and humidity. it feels cooler than that. some 40s for the north end of the bay. you know the fog is back. it is strong. it is going to cool us off today. we have really enjoyed a lot of warmer weather this last week as we go through the weekend. things have all changed. by noon, we are sitting with some 70s in spots and a couple

of low 80s in spots. only a couple of them. the clouds have struck. the breeze gets stronger. a chance for a couple of sprinkles. we probably won't see much at s sunrise. we will have the seven-day forecast in a bit. >> we want to know about the weekend and the giants game once they come back home. >> tuesday. thank you very much, craig. we begin with breaking news out of san jose where several families are out of their homes awakened by sirens after a car clipped a gas meter at a house causing a gas leak there. this happened on barona way in the city's east side about 45 minutes ago. it appears two homes in the neighborhood have been evacuated. police are still looking for the driver who appears to have fled the scene after the crash. we had a crew swing by. we got some details there. fortunately, no one was injured. though, this could have been a very serious situation. that driver just clipped the gas meter. it could have been much worse.

we all know the gas meters are right attached to the house. counting their lucky stars in east san jose. we are also following developing news from the site of another mine disaster. 21 coal miners are dead and 16 more trapped underground in central china after an early morning explosion at a state-owned mind. state work safety administrators say it is too early to tell right now how far underground those workers are trapped or what sparked that explosion. so far, rescue crews got to 239 mine workers and they are now safe. the explosion comes just days after china announced it closed more than 1300 coal mines this year in an effort to improve safety standards. 11,000 small coal mines still operate in that country. china is the world's largest producer and consumer of coal. the rapist next door. an east bay man is accused of raping a woman at the the apartment complex he, himself,

calls home. this is the second in a series of attack at the park regency complex in walnut creek. will there may still be in danger. this morning, security officers continue to check every car driving into and out of that apartment complex. the county sheriff deputies arrested 51-year-old william yokum in connection with a sexual assault that happened last month. another man was arrested in august in connection with three other attacks. neighbors say the latest arrest puts them at ease but only somewhat. >> i'm feeling more secure knowing that the law enforcement are doing what they need to do and that management might be taking care of the problem a little bit better than they say they were. >> take a look at this sketch. the sketch of a third man detectives twoont talk to about an attack that happened at the complex a couple of weeks ago. in that assault, the victim says she fought the attacker off after he tried to put her in her

apartment. still reason to be careful in walnut creek. this morning, a south bay man suspected of committing lewd acts against a child is being held on $1 million bail. officers say 40-year-old john keith wilson's alleged victim is under the age of 40. the detectives say they arrested wilson without incident because of an anonymous tip. detectives served search warrants at his home in los altos and another home in cal gar ras county. police won't say what they found. we checked the database. wilson does not appear to be on it. you can always check megan'slaw.ca.org. a south bay marijuana dispensary is facing charges by illegally making noin by providing marijuana to sick patients. the angel's cooperative is shut

down this morning. agents from the santa clara county special enforcement team seized about 100 pounds of pot after two freezers full of marijuana edibles yesterday. they reportedly froze a $75,000 bank account linked to the dispensary. marijuana clubs are required to be nonprofit agencies under state law. this is the third task force raid in santa clara county within the past few weeks. some speculate this is the way the federal government may choose to deal with medical marijuana in california. if you see teams of officers storming into bay area buildings with guns drawn, don't worry. it is likely part of a large anti-terrorism drill called urban shield. good thing to know about that one. from the transamerican pyramid in san francisco to livermore, hundreds of officers will practice ways to save hostages during locked terror attacks. bay area police department, the fbi and special police forces from jordan, israel and bahrain

are all going to participate. two teenage boyce are facing. >> life in prison for allegedly torching a san jose elementary school. the 16 and 17-year-olds are expected to enter their pleas on wednesday. they were charged as adults with aggravated arson, which carries a sentence of ten years to life behind bars. it's district attorney says the teens are not going to get a break because of the severity of this crime which caused more than $10 million of damage to the elementary school. neither of the suspects attended trace elementary. they will turn over hundreds of pages of internal documents related to the deadly pipeline explosion in san bruno. pg&e says they will give them to the investigations committee. they previously refused to turn over the papers. the documents include inspection reports and gas pine line maintenance memos. it is unclear whether pg&e will

be able to turn over the documents by tuesday's state senate hearing on the explosion. in the meantime, communities are working together to help pick up the pieces in the aftermath of the san bruno blast. today, the historical 23 club in brisbane is hosting a benefit for fire victims. a $10 barbecue and live music, including an open night for musicians who want to participate. the event starts at 6:00 at 23 visitation avenue in brisbane. 100% of the proceeds will go to the red cross. if you are planning on taking b.a.r.t. this weekend, make sure you get to the station early. east bay b.a.r.t. riders are facing major delays this morning and the wait won't be over until tomorrow afternoon. crews are putting the finishing touches on the central contra county's cross over project, trained running between the lafayette and pittsburgh, bay stations are running about 30 minutes late. the crossover project will add two new tracks between pleasant

hill and walnut creek station. the project should be finished by the end of the year, hopefully. it is day four of traffic headaches for people who commute across the san mateo bridge and the bridge fix is not over yet. cal tran says that the repair work won't wrap up until tomorrow. that means a westbound lane will remain closed through the weekend white crews make emergency repairs to a damaged support beam. inspectors found a ten-inch crack in the bridge support during a scheduled inspection. still ahead on "today in the bay," is this the face of the zodiac killer. new leads in a case that's baffled investigators for more than 40 years. that's coming up on "today in the bay." we will check in with craig, the expert, on such things. he sparked panic throughout the bay area, taunted the media with letters and alluded police for more than four decades. 40 years later shall the tip is still poring in. now, a new twist. today, monte bay reports on a new lead in the zodiac kill lgs. >> reporter: edward wayne edwards has a long history violence and is now in prison for slaying and murdering his own foster son. a 207-page report concludes he is the zodiac killer responsible for the deaths of at least seven people in northern california in the late 1960s. retired police detective, john cameron, sent his findings to the san francisco chronicle along with at least a dozen law enforcement agencies including the sfpd. >> any leads that come in, we really wouldn't release details

of those, because it still is an active investigation. >> reporter: this latest claim doesn't appear to come with hard he evidence. the report points out that edward spent years traveling from coast to coast and was adept at changing his identity and hiding from police. edwards even wrote a book about his numerous robberies, thefts and acts of arson. at one point, was on the fbi's ten most wanted list. the mystery of the zodiac killer has been the subject of movies and books. countless he can experts have studied the krip particular letters to the media and police. san francisco police say there are at least a half a dozen leads they are working on in the case, including a claim that a san francisco woman's now-deceased father was the zodiac father. >> i kept telling him he was sick. he killed many, many people. >> reporter: monty francis, nbc bay area news. >> the latest report that was

first mailed to the chronicle. so far the san francisco police department says it has not received it yet. once they do, they say the lead investigator will thoroughly look into the claims. facebook is taking a stand against cyber bullies. they are working to cut down the amount of hate speech on the turf. they are working with the palo alto alliance to make changes after a flood of internet bullies, bullies that flooded a facebook page set up to honor gay teenagers who recently killed themselves. >> facebook has dedicated extra resources to monitoring this page an making sure these violent images and comments that promoted violence against gay and lesbian teenagers are removed immediately. >> facebook says that it takes down hateful posts as soon as possible but the company also said it wants is users to be able to access and express up popular opinions. hundreds of people are up

raindrops, not a whole lot, not real measurable but just a couple. 53, san francisco. 56, san jose. look at the 40s for the north end of the bay. napa, nevada right through san rafael. a couple of 50s into the east bay inland valleys conquered through walnut creek and livermore. we have one storm starting to develop right about here. you have another one passing up into the north and one right in through there. the dormers are starting to open up so the colder air starts to come on through this weekend. this is the one we watch closer to the weekend. all the cloud cover gets closer as we go through the afternoon hours. while we will start off and get a little bit of sunshine later this afternoon. what happens here, this storm is just off the coast. wraparound moisture will give us more cloud cover. some rain gets closer to the south end of the bay. most goes into the central san joaquin sally. expect a couple of light

drivers who appears to have fled the scene after the crash. to break it down, here is what happened. driver loses control for whatever reason. ends up clipping the gas meter on the side of one of the houses have the gas smell and evacuation of two homes. families feeling a little lucky that the car didn't smash into one of the homes this morning. this weekend, it is a power couple lineup in the bay area. former president, bill clinton, is stumping for state candidates, just as secretary of state hillary clinton makes a stop in the bay area as well. why not vacation together here? in southern california, bill clinton is campaigning for democrat, jerry brown and gavin newsome. he heads here for a rally and then a fund-raiser for brown and newsome in los altos. last night, hillary clinton spoke to a sold-out crowd. her focus, american innovation and the empowerment of women around the world. this is only the third speaking engagement in the u.s. since

they took over the secretary of state office. pretty cool it was here. in just a few hours, thousands of people are expected at the alameda county fairgrounds for a tea party election rally. several candidates will speak. more than 70 are on the november ballots. the tea party has the democrats faring fearing that 2010 could be the reverse of 2008 when 50 million first-time voters helped democrats win control of the white house and congress. is. federal prosecutors have unveiled their perjury case against barry bonds. they outlined a string of witnesses they plan to call. those witnesses include bonds' ex mistress, kimberly bell, and a number of current and former major league baseball players, jason and jeremy bee ondy and

randy vel lar day and three of his former joints' teammates. the 46-year-old slugger was indicted more than three years ago on charges of lying to a federal grand jury in 2003. bonds has pleaded not guilty to ten counts of perjury and one count of obstructing justice. duty, honor and country, those are the hall marks of the payne family. tonight shall the hispanic foundation of silicon valley is honoring them. military duty and service goes hand in hand for the brothers. frank payne served in desert storm. his brother, dan, helped to develop and deploy the pate tree ut missile. their brother, ron, works at nasa's wind tunnel program. they say community service is their calling. it is all thanks to the example of their father, frank. the man who went to school at night so he could work during the day. sadly, frank payne died last year. there are those who say he is here watching his family being

against roy halladay much the game starts just before 5:00 tonight and, of course, our sports team will be watching that one and bringing to you highlights a little bit later on today. an update on a developing news story this morning. a gas explosion in central china which left 21 people dead and 16 workers trapped underground in a coal mine. 276 workers were in the mine when the early morning blast happened. rescuers have located the 16 chinese miners but must clear tons and tons of coal dust from the mine shaft in order to reach them. the gas level inside the mine was at 40%, which is way higher than the normal level of 1%. the explosion comes after china announced it closed more than 1300 coal mines this year. china's mining industry is one of the most dangerous in the world. 2600 people were killed in mining accidents just last year

alone. the china mine explosion comes on the heels of a successful mine rescue in chile. 31 of the 33 chilean miners have now been released from the hospital. victor sa goef ya, the 15th miner, may already have a book in the making. he wrote dozens of pages and says there were fights between the men in the mine but nothing serious. the fights were the result of people spending too much time together. we see that the achris mass time every year. still ahead on "today in the bay," an end to the suffering of chronic joint pain and your family tree. how the two are linked in helping people find relief. as we start the weekend, live right now over the golden gate brindge, a little bit of fog. maybe the chance of a couple of

are able to see part of the sunrise this morning. you can see the sunshine there. we will manage closer to the mid and upper 70s for the east side of the bay, inland valleys. south end of the bay. there is san jose downtown and we will get up into the 70s to near 80 to the south end of the bay. we are waking up mostly to 40s and 50s. look at the 50s once you get into livermore and hayward. 56 degrees. as we go through tonight and into tomorrow, expect big changes, cold changes, maybe a couple of wet changes here. we have a storm right in through here getting closer to us. it will sit just off the coast today. it will push in a lot of cooler air. you will notice the big difference in temperatures dropping with the cold air dropping. through tomorrow, it moves down to the south, the south end of the bay and the east bay has a good chance to get in a couple of scattered raindrops. they drop into the 60s and 70s.
