today, monday, october 18th, say bieber was the actual victim today, monday, october 18th, 2010. captions paid for by nbc-universal television and good morning. welcome to "today" on a monday morning. i'm matt lauer. >> and in for meredith, i'm ann curry. good morning, everyone. this new terror warning over the weekend has led police in france to tighten security around monuments like the eiffel tower. >> it's actually the latest in a series of warnings in europe. just last month, a nonspecific threat resulted in stepped up security across the continent and warned the u.s. state department to warn americans traveling there to be on alert. that warning is still in effect. we'll get the latest on this newest situation in just a couple of minutes. and we're learning more what it was like for those miners to spend 70 days underground. some of the men opened up to "today's" natalie morales and the desperation they faced in

those terrifying early days of the disaster. a live report coming up on that. and also ahead, expectant mothers know not to drink or smoke during a pregnancy, but now scientists are saying they've discovered how other factors during that nine months before birth, even the air a woman breathes can impact a child much later in life. we'll have more on that story as well. but let's begin with this new terror alert in europe. and it's reportedly coming from the same al qaeda group that attempted to blow up a detroit-bound jet last christmas. roger cressey is an nbc news terror analyst. roger, good morning. >> good morning, ann. >> we've been hearing about this uptick in terror threats for the past month, but sunday's remarks are from france's interior minister. and he said for the first time, he linked threats to what's called al qaeda in the arabian peninsula. and this is not a branch that's known to attack specifically europe or france. what does this mean? >> that's right. aqap did attack the flight 253

attack inside the united states, but most of their attacks up to this point have been focused on yemen principally and other parts of the arabian peninsula. the terror threat we've talked about in the last several weeks emanated principally from al qaeda central in pakistan. what intelligence have told the french is they have credible information that aqap is looking to attack if not france, then europe in general. the threat picture has changed a little bit, but this just confirms how serious and credible all of the threat streams are right now. >> al qaeda in the arabian peninsula have been linked a short time ago to this nigerian man that tried to bring down a northwest airlines plane heading to detroit last christmas. and u.s. terrorism experts have called this group, quote, the most active affiliate of the al qaeda organization. what does a mean, exactly, roger? >> what's going on, ann, is that aqap was always a threat within arabian pennsylvania, but because of umar farouk abdulmutallab's attempt with flight 253, they now believe

that aqap can project power into europe and they certainly want to try again inside the united states. when we step back and think about the threat picture, we have al qaeda central being a serious threat in europe, we have aqap being a threat in europe, and other streams that officials are concerned about as well. it paints a pretty grim picture, but it's also one that law enforcement and the intelligence community is on top of. >> there's also a report out this morning, roger, quoting a senior nato official saying that osama bin laden is hiding in houses in northwest pakistan. that, quote, nobody in al qaeda is living in a cave and that some members of pakistan's intelligence services are protecting osama bin laden. are you surprised, at all, by any of this? >> not at all. the only thing that surprises me is that a nato official is making these statements. nato and the united states have believed for years that bin laden is hiding in the fattah, the northwest frontier region of pakistan, and he has several advantages. he has a population that's sympathetic to him.

its geography that's very difficult, even for u.s. intelligence, to identify specific individuals. and maybe the pakistani intelligence service is providing some support. we're going to get bin laden and his deputy, al zawahiri, when we get a little bit of luck and a little bit of good information. but we've been trying for nine years and we've failed so far. >> roger cressey, with the last word on that so far. thank you so much, this morning. >> you bet, ann. let's get a check of the rest of this morning's top stories. tamron hall is over at the news desk. good morning. >> good morning. we begin with two high-profile court cases. nine years after the death of washington intern, chandra levy, the jury trial begins in the case. and in connecticut, the penalty phase begins today for steven hayes, convicted of three murders in a home invasion case. the jury will decide if he gets life or death. parts of asia are being pounded by a so-called super

typhoon with severe flooding and winds topping 160 miles an hour. the storm is blamed for dozens of death. some people had to be rescued from raging water. hopes are fading for a miracle at a mine in china after a gas leak over the weekend left at least 30 people dead. seven miners remain missing this morning. rescuers doubt they survived. and new cpr guidelines are out from the american heart association. the group now says, when doing cpr, start with hard, fast chest compressions before giving mouth to mouth. it changed from previous guidelines pinpoint recommends 30 chest presses, then two breaths for adults and children. "the wall street journal" is reporting that ten popular facebook applications have been sending identifying information, including names and friends' names, to advertising and internet tracking companies. according to the paper, the issue even affects people who use the strictest privacy settings. among the popular applications, farmville. facebook says it will introduce new technology to fix the problem. overseas markets are mostly

lower this morning. cnbc's trish regan is at the new york stock exchange. trish, good morning. what is the focus today? >> earnings, earnings, earnings. we're really getting into the full swing of things with the earnings season and bank stocks are very much in focus. you've got citi reporting today. so that's going to have a big effect on this sector that's really been under a ton of pressure as of late, tamron, as a result of the foreclosure fias fiasco. the other thing to keep an eye on would be tech stocks with apple reporting after today's close. but overall, tamron, investors are really looking to see some topline growth. they want sales growth, revenue growth. it's not enough just to make a profit. >> trish, thank you very much. and tonight the yankees and rangers meet for game three of the american league championship series. they are tied at one each. the national league series is also game three is tomorrow, it is 7:07, back to matt, ann and al and my rangers have to come through, sorry, new york.

debate, paul refused to shake conway's hand. colorado's senate candidates debated on "meet the press." tea party endorsed republican ken buck told david gregory he supports the ban on gays serving open in the military. >> do you believe in being gay as a highway as -- >> i think beautiful we have a choice. >> reporter: and there's plenty of disagreement in that colorado race that they have been able to contain it a bit more than what we saw in kentucky. now colorado's particularly important because it is a chance for buck who prefers to call himself a grass roots candidate more than a tea party candidate a chance for republicans to pick up that seat now held by a democrat. in kentucky, the venom really is pouring out there and rand paul says this is really an attack on

his religion as well as on his background. >> kelly o'donnell thank you very much, david gregory is moderator of "meet the press," david good morning to you. let's talk about the president and the first lady campaigning together, first time since 2008, obviously they're looking to generate some of that energy and mojo from that previous campaign. how is it going to go over in your opinion? >> i think there's some signs, there's some evidence that there are more democrats around the country that are getting a little bit more interested in the race, a little bit more intense about these races around the country. that's what the president is trying to tap into. he's also issuing a warning, which is to raise the specter of republicans, particularly those associated with president bush trying to influence the campaign, trying to take a step backwards. these are the warnings the president's issuing. >> we have been hearing that the president has been become a liability to some democratic candidates in some regions of the country.

is he less of a liability with the first lady at his side? >> yes, and it also depends where they go. they went to ohio state for that rally. that's whether you have younger voters, that's where you're more likely to get part of that coalition that he built in 2008. african-americans, younger voters, traditional pillars of the democratic party that he can motivate and say this is an important election, don't sit on the sidelines. and the first lady, she's very popular, if it does raise the positive images of the '08 campaign again. >> over the summer, he said that the democrats might lose control of congress, now he's saying on your show yesterday, he thinks actually they should hold the house an the senate. is it just a better spin, or is there a better scenario developing out there. >> it's a better spin rather than a better scenario. remember, there's early voting going on in parts of the country, in colorado, in illinois. they don't want to send a

message to the white house that they think all is lost. they want to get people out there to try to mitigate the damage. >> with 15 days to go until the election, where are the parties spending the bulk of their money. >> you're going to see them work on getting out the vote, absent tee voting, and they'll look to some key senate races as well, illinois, west virginia, nevada maybe even california and washington state where they can pump some money into it. >> finally let's go into this other interview you had, the republican from colorado and you ask him if homosexuality was a choice and he said yes. clearly that's going to ruffle some feathers but in this season, the election is about jobs, jobs, jobs. >> only if the president is able

to raise the specter of social issuings and ken buck has taken positions to raise the need to ask that kind of question to clarify his views, but i have talked to democrats in colorado and what a lot of coloradoans will ask about is what the gdp to debt ratio. >> david gregory, fasten your seat belts, it's going to be an interesting couple of weeks. those 33 rescued miners in chile are beginning to open up about their 70-day ordeal under ground. >> reporter: and good morning to you, yes, it's been a weekend of celebrations, of homecomings, but also for these miners, at times some difficult adjustment. i spent some time with them this weekend. as you can see, they're very much haunted by what they have

been through. just four days out of the mine, they're seeing the museum now open in honor of the 33. it's like being there again, every moment, he says. i ask them to show me where they are in the photo of all 33, faces that now tell a story of horror, courage and survival. the first break through, what was that moment like for you? it was very emotional, as you can see by my smile, we knew something good was coming soon. victor escaped his hell in the poems he wrote every day, he shared them with his 32 brothers and now with me. physically they're okay, emotionally, they have a long way to go. when we became trapped, i screamed, we're not going to get out of here. i thought of my kids. it was very painful.

desperation set in during those first 19 days, although discovered on day 17, it took two days to get them food, they were dying and they knew it. i think for my part, i survived thanks to god. he was always with us. all have said they felt god watching over them, he was the 34th. they even wrote farewell letters to their families. you prepared yourselves? i delivered myself, i wrote two letters, they stayed below in the mine. what did you say in those letters? i told my wife to take care of my son and to give him good values. but i also told her to live her life. she's a beautiful woman. they missed their families, they missed celebrations. victor turned 34 under ground. above they threw him a party. together, but still so far apart.

finally, day 69, the capsule arrives. carlos was the 13th. for him, it was a joyride. he first saw his dad and the light of day. victor was next, he said his rebirth was like a rose about to bloom. up top he reunited with his angel. did your life change a lot, carlos? yes, it's like we have lost a part of ourselves, we still don't feel whole, we're not 100%. but the men are beginning to open up, this weekend they were on chile's version of the tonight show and i was invited to join them. i also spent time with their families, a homecoming party that lasted well into the morning where the oldest of the miners, 63-year-old mario goemds. but for carlos and victor, what

seemed unimaginable to us is their very life. >> are you going to go back to mining knowing the riskses? >> i'll go back, it's a passion. we're miners. we're proud to be miners. it's a family. some of the video you saw was licensed by nbc news, but amazing the miners say they want to go back to what they know and they really don't need to, because we're learning as of tomorrow, one of chile's wealthiest businessmen is going to offer them a million dollars. coming up, justin bieber reportedly under investigation for assault. a 12-year-old claims a singer hit him during a game of laser tag, but is bieber really the hit him during a game of laser tag, but is bieber really the victim? you know it's bad when the press asks if you'd take a lie detector test. meg whitman didn't tell the truth about not voting or about how long she lived in california.

in texas gave an emotional speech about his own experience growing up gay to help teens who are gay and who are now being bullied. we're going to talk to that councilman. as i just said, i think 1.5 million people have gone online to watch that tape. >> that's very courageous. also the wider side of the upcoming midterm elections, wild whacky and sometimes outrageous political ads of this campaign season. we'll listen to those coming up. we begin this half hour with justin bieber, the focus of a police investigation. tamron hall has the details on that. >> the investigation stems from an alleged altercation at a laser tag park between the 16-year-old pop star and a 12-year-old boy. ♪ >> reporter: he's an international superstar, teen that's right throb.

bieber fever has taken the world by storm, but now it seems the 16-year-old singing sensation may have reached a boiling point. it's been widely reported that bieber was kicked out of a laser tag center in british columbia on friday after allegedly punching a 12-year-old boy, but blogger zack taylor who broke the story says that may not be the case. >> a bunch of 12-year-olds surrounded justin inside the laser tag maze and started shooting at him and like any other kid playing laser tag, he just bolted right through the pack of kids and accidentally hit one of the 12-year-old kids around the face area. >> reporter: still the 12-year-old's father reported the incident to police saying his son was assaulted and sustained minimal injuries, though no medical attention was needed. >> staff members told me that justin and the kid, they weren't yelling at each other at all inside the maze and justin

didn't actually punch the kid or anything like that and justin admitted to the police that he accidentally might have punched the kid while he was running away and police let him go. >> reporter: police have not confirmed the identity of either boy and under canadian law do not release the names of miners. but charges may still be filed. >> all the circumstances around the situation are under investigation. >> according to reports, some kids were taunting him with homophobic remarks and it started a whole altercation. a squeaky clean image that something like this is a major problem for him. >> reporter: and while that still remains to be seeners one thing is certain, the show must go on. with bieber set to hit the stage on tuesday, he's dismissing the

offici >> reporter: officials here at the mexican consulate met with tiffany hartley for eight hours on friday. the texas sheriff handling the u.s. side of that investigation says those mexican officials are actually trying to discourage and intimidate hartley from pushing for a full investigation even asking her to participate in a re-enactment, get back on falcon lake and show them exactly what happened. it was yet another meeting with mexican investigators for tiffany hartley, for eight hours, at fbi headquarters detailing once again what she says happened more than two weeks ago as she jet skied with her husband david on falcon lake. hartley says david was shot in the head by men armed in boats. >> they wanted us to go to mexico to give this witness statement and as a family, we decided that was not a wise decision. if they wanted to come and do

the interview, they would have to come and do it over here in mcallen. >> though not getting into specifics, the mexican investigator says there's now details -- those new details are a mystery to tiffany who says her story hasn't changed. >> the story i have been telling from the beginning is the same story that i was telling then. they obviously get a little bit more in detail. the same story has been told over and over and over. >> reporter: while the investigation may still be active, by all accounts, the search for david hartley's body has ended nothing the beheading of the chief investigator in the case last week. she's still got her dog and her family. but hartley admits it been an unbearable few weeks. >> we will miss him very much. >> reporter: watching her

there are a lifetime of happy memories that you can make, if you just hang on long enough to get them. >> you spoke from the heart, you spoke from experience about the time you had been through with the young man in junior high school and high school. that incident you talk about getting roughed up by a group of kids. let me ask you what got you through that time? what was it that was different about you? where did you find the strength to keep going? >> i was fortunate that i had incredibly loving family, great parents and a lot of friends. i was fortunate to have the confidence that i think some kids don't have today or even back then. and because of that, it's helped to get me through that time. >> this idea when you talked to these other teens out there, whether they're gay or straight, but they're being bullied and you say it gets easier. what would you say to the young man or young woman out there who doesn't believe you, it can't get better, this is the worst, my life is going to be like this forever. how do you convince them that there is light at the end of the

are pregnant and those of us who have already been through pregnancy are really sobered by a lot of these findings because this really rewrites to some degree how we look at what we should be thinking about. what's your take away? >> my take away is now about adding to the anxiety and stress that pregnant women already feel, it's about thinking about pregnancy in a different way, it's a crucial time when the fetus is being molded and shaped for the world that it's going to experience on the other side of the womb. so we need to take care in what we do when we're pregnant, but i don't think this needs to add to the anxiety and worry that women feel. >> this blows open the science of it all because we have been taught for years that evolution, takes place over many, many years, many centuries, now it's perhaps something we call

this morning on take it off "today," how healthy is your yogurt. some yogurts can actually send you into sugar shock. nutritionist joy bauer is our "today" show contributor. you're helping me eat better, more energy, things like that. one of the first things you said to me was you like yogurt. >> and that's because yogurt is one of the best sources of calcium hands down, it provides 300 to 400 milligrams per cup. it also has high quality protein and it's one of the few foods that has these live cultures, they're called healthy bacteria. and they may aid in digestion.

>> i don't like the taste of plain yogurt, but i like the fruit on the bottom kind, it's a little sweeter, that's probably not the way to go in your opinion. >> the first thing is you have to buy low fat or nonfat. this is going to safe a significant a lot of calories and artery clogging fat. but when it comes to different yogurts, there's two different categories. the first are the artificially sweetened o eed yogurt. normally they say light, but there's going to be fewer calories and fewer sugar grams which may be a good option for people trying to lose weight or people having diabetes that need to curb their carbohydrate intake. >> but there are naturally sweetened yogurts. >> the problem is, even though i love natural, that's a big bonus

in my book, they could have an astronomical amount of sugar. so you have to know what you're buying. >> what's the sugar criteria, what do we need to know? first when it comes to the kids yogurts, they're going to be smaller, only four ounces, my personal criteria is no more than 14 grams of sugar. and these are two brands that meet the cup. but the regular more traditional six-ounce containers, there's a little bit more leeway because they're bigger. look on the label, no more than 20 grams of sugar per container. >> after that you're not doing yourself any good? >> it's so much sugar, you're going to get a high and then a crash. >> greek yogurt seems to be the trend of year, is it better for you. >> they strain out some of the liquid for a cleaner consistency and it has twice the protein of traditional yogurt. but all greek yogurt is not

created equal. but this is a regular full fat 7 ounce, it had the same ap of saturated, artery clogging fat. >> so i can eat the ice cream instead? >> but the good news is the very same criteria for the regular yogurt works for the greek. you want no more than 20 grams of sugar per container and all of these brands fit the bill. we picked a 2% blueberry that's fabulous. there's a dannon, there's a brown cow there,'s a lot of different vary it thes. >> in a perfect world, you could have all the control, you could start with plain, nonfat or low fat yogurt, stick with one teaspoon of either honey or

business, it may be time to think about a prenuptial agreement that can protect you from a fallout in the marriage. >> if you're married and you haven't had that conversation, you need to have that conversation because you need to not be surprised? like the woman whose husband just died. >> also recognize that it's natural to take on certain roles in the relationship financially. more oftentimes or not, someone will be the chief financial officer in the family and that's something they want to do, they'll take care of the bills, they'll be on top of all that, but as the other person in the relationship, you want to switch roles to make sure that if something happened and you have to step in, you know where all the documents are kept, you know how to pay everybody. you want to have a running list so it will look like a crib sheet of lawyers, in particular your estate planning attorney who can refer you to the will, the living well, the health care

knew that barbara was there for me, she was like that with everyone. she was the most kind and giving person, she was a philanthrop t philanthropist, she supported many, many charities and i did some charity work with her, but she was always out there helping other people. >> do you have a favorite memory? >> i said that barbara in some ways taught me manners and one of the things she did one time that i still remember is, i was a very rambunctious child, i had a lot of energy and one time we were going to a door and i was all excited, i think it was some sort of a press thing and i was going to walk out the door in front of her and i kind of brushed in front of her, and she grabbed me by these little hairs and gave me a gentle pull. and then she told me with a big smile, jerry, ladies always go first. she was just like that, she was so kind and i knew that if i ever had a problem that she

could help me with, she would be there. and she would do that for anyone. she was the nicest person you could ever meet, not june cleaver, but even nicer. >> jerry, al roker here, what's her legacy going to be do you think? >> you know, leave it to bieave is the longest running show on television history. it's been on now for 53 years. i think people will know, when it was going on, cowboys and indians and gangster movies were the only thing that the world saw, and leave it to beaver and the other shows that were situation comedy suddenly came out and i think barbara set an image. people always said, no one can live like that, no one could except barbara. barbara had a wonderful life and she was in many ways like june cleaver and not that this character was based on her or that she tried to follow it, that was the real barbara billingsley. >> you're so nice to get up early.

>> translator: it's like being there again every moment, he says. i asked them to show me where they are in the photo of all 33. faces that now tell a story of horror, courage, and survival. the first breakthrough, what was that moment like for you? >> translator: it was very emotional, as you can see by my smile, we knew something good was coming soon. victor escaped his hell in the poems he wrote every day. he shared them with his 32 brothers and now with me. physically, they're okay, emotionally, they have a long way to go. >> translator: when we became trapped i screamed, we're not going to get out of here. i thought of my kids. it was very painful. desperation set in during those first 19 days. although discovered on day 17, it took two days to get them food. they were dying and knew it.

>> translator: i think for my part i survived thanks to god. he was always with us. all have said they felt god watching over them. he was the 34th. they even wrote farewell letters to their families. did you prepare yourselves? >> translator: i delivered myself. i wrote two letters. they stayed below in the mine. >> reporter: what did you say in those letters? >> translator: i told my wife to take care of my son and to give him good values, but i also told her to live her life because she's a beautiful woman. they missed their families, they missed celebrations. victor turned 34 underground. above, they threw him a party. together but still so far apart. finally, day 69. the capsule arrives. carlos was the 13th. for him, it was a joyride. he first saw his dad and the

light of day. victor was next. he said his rebirth was like a rose about to bloom. up top he reunited with his angel. did your lives change a lot, carlos? >> translator: yes, it's like we've lost a part of ourselves. we still don't feel whole. we're not 100%. but the men are beginning to open up. this weekend they were unchile's version of the "tonight show" and i was invited to join them. i also spent time with their families. a homecoming party that lasted well into the morning for the oldest of the miners, 63-year-old mario gomez. but for the miners like carlos and victor, what seems unimaginable to us is their very life. are you going to go back to mining, knowing the risks? >> translator: i'll go back, it's a passion. we're miners. we're proud to be miners.

and now to "today's" health, an every d now to today's health. everyday ways to reduce your cancer risk. according to the national cancer institute, more than 11 million people in the u.s. live with cancer. while you can't always revent it you can lower your chances of getting it. dr. nancy snyderman is nbc's chief medical editor and robby cap low the executive editor of prevention magazine. nancy, we're going to talk about the things we don't normally think of. what are some of the basics that we need to be doing? >> the basic, the things you and i talk about that bore people to death, but they're really smart. you can't smoke, have to eat a reasonable amount of food from reasonable places and exercise. if people did those three things, you could reduce the heart disease and cancer risks in this country by half bar none. cigarettes are the only product when used as directed will kill you. >> which is not a good thing. okay. let's get started.

robbi, for those of us who like grilling meat, first thing you ought to do if you're going to grill meat, marinate meat first. >> there are cancer causing chemicals that are formed when meat is seared at high temperatures. we like to recommend as prevention that people do things, that they're smart, for instance. adding spices like rosemary and thyhe to their marinade it. >> what does it do? >> it's rich in antioxidants. research has shown they can cut formation by cancer chemicals by 87%. it's a great thing to do. >> char your food. if you marinate it and add the good stuff. if you char it you create a chemical, the cancer causing chemical. it's a reminder if you want to sere something to hold in the juices, that's one thing. once it gets charred it's no good for you and risk of cancer

of the esophagus and stomach goes up. >> is there any limit or amount you have to be eating? >> i don't think people should eat red meat more than a couple times a week. remember it's the size of the palm of your hand. that's a serving size, no more. >> next tip, robbi, snack on brazil nuts. why brazil nuts? >> brazil nuts are an incredibly great source of siliniam. there was a recent study of darth mouth, if you eat a lot in your diet it lowers your risk of bladder cancer in women. there's other research i'm sure you've seen this that indicates that high blood level of silinian is linked to lower rates of death from lung and cancer. it enhances our immune system and suppresses formation of blood vessels that can nurse tumors. >> remember, even the good nuts have a certain amount of fat in them. if you love your nuts, for me it's almonds and walnuts, i count them out.

>> they're caloriely dense. >> the next thing i find interesting, when it comes to drinking water you should use filtered tap water instead of bottled. why? >> there's been a lot of controversy about this. what has happened is there was a recent report from the president's cancer panel on how to reduce your exposure to carcinogens and said in fact home filtered tap water is safer bet than bottled water. what they have found is that in some cases the quality of bottled water is no higher than in some cases worse than water from municipal sources. >> that's a little scary. >> very scary. >> the whole bottled water thick thing is a hoax. >> you don't know where it comes from. if you like fizzy water that's one thing. regular old water, most municipalities in the united states have extraordinarily good water and you can find the standards on the epa website. if you want to go ahead and pour it into a filter in your refrigerator. great. everyone needs to just chill and

order water in a restaurant like normal people. >> mike normal people. dry cleaning. this one's interesting. >> yes. there's actually a solvent used in traditional dry cleaning. that according to the epa can be linked to certain kinds of kidney cancer. >> what about the ones you see, the environmentally safe? the green dry cleaning? is that better? >> it's hard to say. the epa is not going to tell us, look, never use a dry cleaner again. it's, of course, mostly to people who work specifically with products. >> those of us who take our clothes -- >> in the old days it was benzene and people who were really doing the work and getting liver and kidney cancer. for most of us who take the occasional article to the dry cleaner is not where the risk is. >> the people who are working. >> time finally eat the really greens. >> what gives green greens their potency is magnesium. >> what kind are we talking about? >> spinach. >> broccoli is the most perfect

this morning in "today's" kitchen, one stew that comes through as hearty and healthy, the recipe is straight from the america's test kitchen healthy family cookbook, a new healthier way to cook everything from america's most trusted test kitchen. good to see you. where did this get its name? >> shepherd's pie? no shepherds were injured in the making of this pie. this was what shepherd's made with leftover ground lamb. this is a healthy cookbook and over 800 recipes for really healthy eating. a lot of them are just drained vestige vegetables. it has to taste good, who cares if it's healthy? so we're going to make it have a third of the fat and just as good. we have a little canola oil and

a little bit of butter. then we're going to add the beef. we're using 95% lean beef, and that means you don't want to brown it. when you brown meat it gets tough. most people in america are more likely to use beef. but you use a very lean beef and just cook it until the pink goes away. and once that's done, add in some flower for thickening, and garlic and tomato paste. you have to boost up the flavor because 95% lean isn't as flavorable. then start adding more flavor. worcestershire sauce. chicken broth is a good thing to use. >> you wouldn't use beef stock? >> chicken stock had better flavor.

and beef stock, they didn't like as well. but here's the best. this is beer. >> dark beer? >> you can use dark, you can use light. it has good flavors, makes up for some of the flavor you're missing from the fat of the hamburg hamburger. this is your base all ready to go. and while that's cooking down, you're making your mashed potatoes. mashed potatoes get all their flavor from cream and butter. we still use some butter, because they went down from six tablespoons down to one. so u you have to have the flavor. this is lower fat sour cream. we tried no fat sour cream, but it wasn't good. and the same thing, lower fat, 2% milk. mash that all up, and when you're done with it, you have something like this. >> what about the peas and carrots. >> just before you put it into this thing, you have some corn,

you're a breast cancer thriver, you need to go initially and have checkups, i go once a year and do a mammogram and i also do -- when i had breast cancer, it didn't show in a mammogram, i do my regular self-breast exams. this is something i developed, it is called the live. it is a self-breast examine device for women to make it easier to do your exams. it magnifies your touch. you can put it between you and your breast and do regular motion, just circular motion. >> sometimes i have to say, when you do your own thing and i know this, you don't know what's going on in there. there are a lot of things that are happening, but you're not sure if it is something bad or something you should check out. what's your advice? if you find something that could or may not be something -- >> it is getting to know it. it is lime every time you do it, you create a database of what's normal for you because every woman's breasts are different. you go, this is normal, this is what's normal here, but this is not.

developmental delays at age 3, lower scores on iq tests and even increased behavioral problems when they were ages 6 to 8. >> reporter: and at the psychiatry department of columbia, researchers are literally putting the fetus on the couch to see how the mental state of a mother affects the baby she's carrying. results show that babies of depressed mothers are more reactive to stress than the babies of mothers who have no history of psychological problems. >> how she's doing and her emotional life is going to potentially make a different environment for that fetus in a way that would have influences on how that baby's going to develop in the future in terms of its temperament and personality. >> reporter: more evidence that pregnancy is a crucial staging ground for us for the rest of our lives. dr. nancy is here with annie murphy paul, the author of "origins: how the nine months before birth shape our lives." welcome, leadies. >> it is so interesting.

made more than 11 million trips through the airport between june and august. that's more than a 4% gain over the same period in 2009. sfo attributes the increase to more low-cost airfares and more travelers taking trips to asia and the middle east. san francisco is trying to bring in more tv and film crews to the city. the film commission is taking steps to attract more productions like the recent filming of "harvey milk." the new big productions bring in a significant amount of money to the city' economy, but the commission faces tough challenges. the new director says there's a misperception that there's a lack of facilities for films and that san francisco is too expensive. by the end of the year sprint will offer the first 4g wireless data service pour the bay area. the new service will speed downloads of web pages, e-mail and videos to sprint phones with 4g wireless antennas or cards. sprint says it will charge an extra $10 a month for data service on phones that can

i could and moved as little as possible. food for me was very much both a comfort and a solution to boredom. i would sit in my room all day playing computer games, only leaving to go to taco bell and mcdonald's. in college, my health spiraled out of control. at my heaviest i weighed 365 pounds. i knew that being obese was making me depressed but i could never muster the motivation to do anything about it. then in december of 2008 my grandmother asked me if i was really happy about my life. lying in bed that night, i realized i wasn't and that i hadn't been in a very long time. so i decided to do something about it. i called my brother who wanted to lose weight himself, and we began to run. very slowly at first, but together we finished a 5k. two months later we did a 10k and eventually ran a marathon. crossing that finish line was the proudest moment of my life.
