feeling the heat this morning. did the network make a bad call? we'll get straight into that in a couple of minutes. also ahead, the chilling confession of canada's so-called killer colonel. the former air force officer was sentenced to the life in prison thursday for a disturbing series of crimes, incoming two murders. we'll have the very latest and hear part of his confession, coming up. on a much, much lighter note, hard to make the turn from that story, but we'll talk to the rolling stones guitarist, keith richards. he's coming out with a new memoir. and one headline that's been picked up is his description of mick jagger as unbearable. so what is the real state of their relationship? we'll hear from the one and only keith richards in just a little bit. >> that had to be an interesting interview. could you understand anything he said? >> absolutely. a cool guy. i like him. let's get a check of this morning's top stories. tamron hall is in for ann at the news desk. >> we begin with a dire prediction from the ccd. up to one third of u.s. adults

could have diabetes by 2050. calling the numbers alarming, the cdc says americans need to eat less and exercise more. a desperate search is under way for possible survivors after a passenger ferry capsized following a collision with a cargo ship. it happened in the netherlands. the ferry is floating upside down in the water. it is not clear how many people may have been on board. a massive rock slide hit a tourist bus thursday in taiwan. 16 people inside escaped serious injury, but about 400 other people are trapped on a coastal highway. a california man is in custody after police say he barricaded himself inside a shopping mall and started a fire. a s.w.a.t. team moved in and the man was arrested. part of the mall was destroyed. overseas markets are mostly lower this morning. cnbc's trish regan is at the new york stock exchange. trish, good morning. what's the focus there today? >> well, tamron, yet again, earnings. we are in the midst of earnings season and investors are watching this very, very carefully. now, thus far, we've actually

seen some pretty good reports from a lot of these companies. overall, they are making their numbers. many are beating their numbers, but one of the big issues that keeps getting raised over and over again is just exactly how much are they seeing in terms of sales, in terms of revenue. yes, they are making profits, but a lot of that is coming from cost cutting, which doesn't necessarily bode well for the future. so that's the issue, keep an eye on it. >> will do. thanks, trish. tonight, game six of the american league championship series with the rangers leading the yankees three games to two. last night the phillies beat the giants 4-2. giants lead that national league series three games to two with game six tomorrow. police in california are looking for at least six people who robbed a jewelry store thursday. when they realized robbers were unarmed, store employees threw chairs and whatever else they could find to chase them away. it is 7:04. back to, matt, natalie and al. crime does not pay.

honest discussion. >> reporter: a leaked internal memo, npr says they fired williams because news analysts may not take personal public positions on controversial issues. >> it is not compatible with the news analyst. >> reporter: scliler later apologized for her comments. the right has long accused npr for liberal bias. there was also support from the left. whoop who whoopi agrees with him. >> it was a total mistake and it sends the wrong message.

>> williams is just the latest personality dumped for comments on race and religion. >> any time there is this public intersection of debate about the role of muslims and terrorism, it is a real fear in our society right now. >> reporter: now williams is no worse off after his firing from npr, in fact, fox has announced it is expanding his role and giving him a fat raise, a three-year contract for nearly $2 million. >> lou dobbs is a nationally syndicated radio host, are you? >> you left cnn about a year ago after being outspoken on a lot of issues including immigration problems in this country. you heard what juan williams said, not on npr, but on fox, but the firing justified? >> the firinging is not only not justified, it should call into question the entire board of npr

and what their ceo is doing. last year i was saying nothing last year that national main stream media has not begun to say now. they're actually applying critical judgment to the policies of this administration. what we are watching is the authoritarian left trying not to win an argument, they're trying to stifle and shut down dissenting voices in this country. and alarm bells should be going off across the country. >> here's what npr had so say, we offer views of all kinds on our air every day, but those views are expressed by the people we interview, not our reporters and analysts. is perhaps the problem here that juan was occupying two very different roles simultaneously? >> you could make that argument, but i think the real problem was that he was expressing an

opinion and vivian hiller, the ceo of npr didn't like it. instead of standing behind expression of free speech in the public arena, which npr should stand for, for crying out loud, not be stifling, they fired this young man. i thi i. >> let me give you a different example. i'm the host of the "today" show, m my job is to sit here and interview people in an unbiassed way, if i leave this job and i have another job and i go over there and i give my opinion on those same opinions as heard here, does nbc have the

right to say hey, pick one or the other? >> they have already acceded to that arrangement and only a fool in management would act as viv jan shiller did. in each one of those cliffs, you did not hear juan go on and be sympathetic to any of those muslims. >> he says actually, i was pointing out these fears simply to make the case that nobody should make rash judgments about people of any faith. it's not the comments, those i think are being taken out of context. it's really this idea is he allowed to state one thing on one net work and occupy another role on another network? >> the question is why did vivian shiller become -- we need -- we have npr for crying

chance, at least that's their spin for the house, they do talk about holding on to democratic majority in the senate. he's trying to help barbara boxer in california and harry reid in nevada. he's got to turn out the traditional base of the democratic party. closing arguments very simply, be afraid of change, don't buy into the republican argument, they want to take away some of the things we have accomplished. that's going to be a very impressive argument. he ties it to all the outside money coming in and saying they just want to go backwards. >> focus in specifically, pennsylvania, a new quinnipiac shows joe sestak closing in on pat toomey there. what has helped sestak just in the last few weeks? >> i have talked to democrats and republicans not only in

philadelphia but around the country. you have democrats that are coming home in those blue states, in those democratic states, more democrats getting interested in the race, they're getting fired up, there's more intensity. and also what's going on in delaware, christine o'donnell getting so many headlines, she's not really in that race, she's way behind, but a lot of independent voters are looking a at what she's saying, i'm not sure i trust the republican brand from the tea party right now. it's actually helping sestak in his race. >> and with the christine o'donnell an the tea party effect, is she helping our hurting? >> the reality is that that's only going to work so far, because the fae party movement is a legitimate movement, it is energizing voters around the

country. but as democrats cast this as a freak show going on on the right around the country and they're going to use that and in some cases it will work and in some cases not. sharon angle makes some controversial statements about latinos, that could hurt in a state where you've got high latino voters. >> really quickly, david in california, the gubernatorial race, and most polls democratic jerry brown now leading meg whitman. what is going to be the factor in that race. >> undecided voters, there's some disaffected democrats who don't like jerry brown. remember undecided voters could throw up their hands and not vote in a midterm election cycle where they don't have quite as much energy in turning out.

investigators for ten hours, and he's be thursday the decorated pilot received two life sentences for a laundry list of crimes including the savage murders of two women. >> he won't see the light of day. >> i don't care what stipulation he has on him. >> an air base commander, he flew with dignitaries, including the queen of england, williams, who's married, kept a meticulous journal of his double life, his gruesome crimes. williams broke into homes and stole underwear from women and little girls, photographing his keepsakes and posing for pictures in lingerie while still in their rooms. >> this is somebody who had a problem that got progressively worse as time went on.

>> reporter: williams confessed to the rapes and murderers of two women, videotaping the brutal attacks and the desperate pleas of his victim. >> what this demonstrated is that the justice system could deal with even the most horrific of crimes in a dignified ways. >> saying he deeply regret what is he did. once a decorated commander of canada's military brass is now responsible for a dark chapter in the country's history. . >> it is 7:19, once again here's natalee. there's an undefeated college football team in new york, and these players have a special reason to act sell. the coach is being deployed to afghanistan.

also ahead, troubled actress lindsay lohan is set to appear before a judge this morning and she could be sent to jail for failing a court ordered drug test. plus fathers who are bonding with their daughters in the most unexpected arena, we're talking about the beauty pageant. they do it all, they sew the n costumes and help them with their routines. shaean o'keefe is speaking t about how he survived that plane crash that killed his friend former senator ted stevens. >> reporter: in alaska there's nothing unusual about taking a plane to go fishing. but on august 9, a fishing trip

turned into a story of searing loss and gritty survival. this an experienced pilot in the cockpit, and seven friends and fishing guests took off into cloudy skies. among the eight passengers was former nasa chief sean o'keefe, a long time friends of senator stevens and his son kevin. >> reporter: 15 minute into the flight, the cabin was quiet. >> and then? >> with no notice, so evasive n maneuv maneuvers, no log. >> the plane crashed into a mountain.

>> reporter: o'keefe blacked out coming to in a state of hazy confusion. >> i was spitting out shards of teeth. >> reporter: he was bewildered. so you're looking where you think your son is and he's not there? >> that's right. >> reporter: sean started shouting his name. with a severely broken ankle, broken ribs, a dislocated hip, deep cuts to his head, sean could feel himself giving in. then the magnitude of the disaster set in. senator stevens was sitting next to me, i felt for his pulse, i realized that my friend had passed away. >> reporter: and sean himself had to hold on, had to know if his son was still alive.

>> i couldn't imagine surviving through this experience if he were not here. >> sean o'keefe, we always say to our guests it's good to have you here, but it takes on a different meaning, it's good to have you here. >> thank you very much. >> there was a light hearted exchange. she looked at you and said, make sure you bring him back in one piece. referring to my son kevin. >> after that plane hit the mountain side, you went in and out of consciousness, you talked about how the plane didn't look anything like it looked before the crash and you're desperate to find your son, and you're yelling for kevin. and you realize, based on the fact that this plane has been jumbled, he's right in front of you. what condition was he in?

>> he was in the seat right next to the pilot. so he was behind the bulkhead or the cockpit of the aircraft. and apparently the seat he was in moved to the left. and the harnesses were extended from the roof of the aircraft, he moved to the left. so it was a surreal look of him there. >> still in the harness? >> yes. >> and not moving? >> he was unconscious and he came to a few moments later. >> can you describe what you felt when you heard him for the first time? >> relief. i can't imagine how difficult this would have been to persevere through had he not been able to respond. >> how injured is he? >> he dislocated his right hip, broke his jaw, so he was in the wires and all that for the last couple of months. had a few lacerations here and

there. but by and large, he came through it without major injuries. >> i'm trying to imagine the situation there's some of you in that plane who have survived and you are amidst those who are not. you ended up right next to stevens, you talked to about ann feeling for his pulse and you didn't find one. you had known him for over 30 years. >> the degree of separation between survival and not was a fraction of what you would ever imagine. it could have been anybody. the randomness of this whole experience, that any doubt you have about divine intervention goes away. that's the only thing that separated it. >> a guy named bill phillips was on the plane with his 13-year-old son willie. willie survived and he began yelling for his father, where's

my dad? where's my dad? you were able to know that his dad did not survive. and you had to be the one in this wreckage to tell this boy that his father had passed away. >> he's an incredibly courageous young man, he matured in an instant, there's no question about that. >> what do you mean. >> he recognized the severity of what was going on, he came to realize, our wives of those of us who had survived it were really hanging in the balance. he was the only one of the four of us who was mobile, could actually walk around. he moved outside the airplane, tried to look for some means of communications, he was an incredibly, incredibly mature kid. >> you talk about the moments after the crash, you're not out of the woods just because you have survived the impact. you talk about it being

completely quiet, except for the rain that was falling and in some cases coming through the fuselage, and you started to think we could have survived the crash but die of exposure? >> it's a common circumstance, given the huge expanse of the state of alaska and the wilderness there that many of the collisions, accidents, crashes that occur, and maybe survives, but they may not return because it just takes so long to recover and see where that accident may have occurred. in this particular case, we were 15 or 20 minutes away from the lodge we were staying at on our way to a comp that was the same pattern we had flown day in and day out. >> you knew there would be some flyovers and with willie able to move around outside that wreckage, when they did fly over, they knew there were survives which made it more sure negligent for them to get down

to you. describe your rescue? >> it was several hours, because weather would not permit the search and rescue helicopters to come in until early this next morning. and seeing the recovery basket come through the haze and the clouds, you could hear the helicopters overhead, but you couldn't see it was nothing short of miraculous to know we're about to get out of here. but there was several hours before we realized that anybody was going to spot us. the courage that willie demonstrated out there trying to findi find if there was any way to communicate. >> you referred to it a couple of minutes ago, sean, to inches. but you can't go through something like this and not ask yourself why you lived and why others didn't live. how do you go about answering

the question? >> it's a question i have ask so many times and i suspect i probably will never reach an answer. the randomness of this is so unbelievable. senator stephens was just right next to me and by the time the impact occurred, he had moved the full length of the aircraft to the left side of me. i moved forward and managed to avoid whatever the impact was that he encountered, just by sheer circumstance. so it's -- and bill phillips, he was in the very back of the aircraft, it was one of those cases where you wonder and i'll continue to wonder i think until my last breath, i'm sure, he said if i was closer, it have fought death, too. >> how is bill? >> the injuries he did sustain, he reported to school on the first day of the fall semester

to get into this? did she want to get into this? >> she was actually a baby and we were walking through the mall and saw a mall pageant. and we said, well, every little girl does this, i guess. it started off from there and he enjoyed it. >> ava, do you like wearing pretty dresses? >> yes. >> and when we talk about the pageant world and we have all seen tiaras and toddlers, and there's some ideas about that show. you say that you came away from this whole piece that you worked on with a completely different viewpoint, what was that. >> i was really impressed by just the family nature of the whole thing and the bonding experience that these guys go through with their daughters and it was really a lot of fun. i spent a weekend at a pageant with lan and halea and the kids were really enjoying it. >> was it odd for you to see

yumpk girls wearing makeup and dressed up like this? how do you explain to people what that's all about. >> they consider it playing dressup. maybe it's more extreme than what some kids have in their closets at home. >> and to people who question and say you're exploiting your daughter by doing this, what is your answer? >> i think this is what they want to do, we're not pressuring them, we're not forcing them, this is what they enjoy doing, and as soon as they don't prooesh appreciate it and they don't want to do it, but as long as they're happy, we'll continue and let them think what they want. >> and david, what do you think of that question as well. >> i don't think i'm exploiting her. i think i'm giving her outlets for her to see what she enjoys doing. right now it could be a beauty pageant, later on it could be softball.

sort of manage things. and that's what makes a resilient adult. >> but how do you know if it's fear or it's something more serious and it's a full-on phobia at that point. >> fears are something, this makes me a little scared, but if it's important, i'll manage, i'll do it anyway, i'll go to school, i'll go to camp, i'll go visit this aunt who has this dog that i'm afraid of. >> go into a dark room. >> exactly, because it's important, and i can sleep through the night. but a phobia is, you really avoid thing. you start just avoiding important things in life that really changes your life function. and you really feel the kind of fear that's just sort of overwhelming. >> and maybe in children, you see anxiety and other signs. >> you know, a quarter of all children will have an anxiety disorder at some point. it's eminently treatable, but it's important for parents to know when it is a time to bring a child in for treatment. >> let's take a look at some comments, fear of the dark, how do you deal with that? >> this is so common. but the point is not to belittle your child's fear.

you don't want to say, yes, there are terrible things in the dark, but you don't want to say, come on, that's just ridiculous. you want to be empathetic. what can we do to make you more comfortable? nightlights are helpful. you don't need to make your children sleep in the dark, particularly when they're very little. usually they grow out of this by early adolescence. if they don't and they won't go on sleepovers or camp because of this kind of fear, you might want to check in with somebody about it. but usually that's not the case. >> what about the fear of make-believe monsters? >> at this time of year, this is just torture for some children. it makes them miserable. do not force your child to engage with these kind of things if this is really scary for them. you want to be a little sympathetic and talk to them about the difference between real and make-believe. because all these things are make-believe, but --

>> it can be really scary. that mask from the movie "scream," every time i see someone in that, it scares me, and i'm not a kid. >> i understand. and if you had a child, they'd be scared too, because they tend to run in families. so be sympathetic, but let them talk about their fears. that helps them. >> what about loud noises? a lot of decorations you see on lawns right now, when you walk by, they make a sound. >> and little children are more likely to be afraid of loud sounds, vacuums, ambulances. but these things that make crazy noises. >> fear of dogs and cats? most children seem to love -- >> hugely common. especially if they've had a negative experience. don't force them to pet the dog or be with the dog. introduce them little by little, start with pictures. then find someone who has a small, very calm, very friendly dog, and ask your child if they could pet it. >> real quick, fear of death. that's a big one. >> this is huge. and you know, unfortunately, death is ultimately undeniable.

different categories, there's western wear and talent. >> it's very much like what we would see in a miss america or miss usa type pageant? >> yes. >> from watching toddlers and tiaras, i have seen a lot of the pageant contestants have meltdowns. sometimes i am disappointed by the mother's response. do you think as fathers you handle these inevitable moments differently? what do you do to keep them from happening? >> i have had quite a few meltdowns, she's like any child, they get tired, like right now, she's asleep. but as a parent, i think it's different to see a father out, you know, out there in the pageants of course. but where she sees me as kind of

like the main disciplinarian as the family. she pretty much knows if she sees me, she cools down a little bit. >> you wrote the article in "people" magazine out this week, did you see a difference between stage moms and pageant dads? >> i think we're used to seeing moms and daughters together, when you see the dads, they definitely have a different kind of relationship with their daughter. pageant directors have said that these dads are more laid back than the moms and the dads are having fun with the girls, and the dads are so cool with their daughters and the girls really like it. >> and i know you handle a lot of ava's make up and costumes. gina asks where did you learn to make these dresses and what inspired you to get involved with your daughter's pageant instead of other activities? >> my mom was a seamstress,

night dinners in a flash. robin miller is host of the food network's quick fix meals. and it's not going to break the bank. we're starting off with skirt steak, which is an economical piece of meet. >> i want to cook once and i want to get a second meal out of it. i have this resting, you want to start with room temperature meat, so the outside doesn't burn while the inside stays rare. i'm going to season with salt and pepper. >> and this cooks pretty quickly because it's such a thin cut of meet. >> maybe four minutes per side. i'm going to get that on there. and i'll do the other side. of course i already have some resting. >> sure, we'll get to that other batch, but here's what you want to do to make it fancy.

you have got to use flank steak and london broil. we're going to do some black pepper butter. a little bit of butter in a tiny sauce pan, and you put in a little bit of black pepper. you want to infuse the black pepper into the butter. this is carry over cooking, so you want to make sure that you rest it. so it stays nice and moist and beautiful. cross the grain, that way you don't get what feels like a big piece of bubble gum in your mouth. so you cut across the grain so it's beautiful. get it right to the plate. and you can serve it with some steamed vegetables. >> very simple. >> very simple. and we're going to pour over the black pepper butter. here's the trick, i make an
