and beyond. things have dried out and isolated showers possible around the hilltops and along the coast. back to you. >> now let's go to today in the bay's christie smith to show us the trouble they are causing. >> reporter: good morning. lingering problems over on highway 84 that will be going on for sometime. i will get to that in a minute. i wanted to mention the good news happening this morning for bart riders. that is that the 12th street bart station here in downtown oakland is fully functioning this morning after the lights went out for sometime yesterday. both here and at the lake merit bart station. this is no short-term outage. it went on for six long hours and the storm trains would roll through and could not stop actually while the power was up. that led to system-wide delays. this all downtown also where the oakland fire department won. that's the dispatch center and

they had to use a generator to restore power there. the police department over on seventh and broadway went dark. no impact on 911, but at least 15,000 customers lost power. all of that restored this morning according to pg&e. also new this morning, back to highway 84, a pg&e transformer blew and knocked down a pole. live wires across the road. our camera couldn't get past the roadblock due to the closure and the danger from the live wire. pg&e expected to have that reopened sometime around 8:00 this morning. live in oakland, christie smith today in the bay. >> thanks, christie. >> we want this check in with mike. you might find water standing and trees down. all kinds of stuff that could affect the commute. >> you are right. as more folks hit the road, you woor likely to get the reports because they discover what's going on.

leave a little early and even for bart which as christie said no delays and stations have been any problems. no delays reported for 47 trains and get to the station early and you will expect an adjustment with the folks from last night. getting used to the things and 12th street station is open. the driff to the similar area looks nice and you see slowing through emeryville on westbound 80 off of the east shore freeway. as well as out of the tunnel for 45 minutes and heading past highway 13. that's an earlier start for the slow down than we see. i will point that out. jumping up to the north, another type of story christy is talking about, a tree down across all lanes. it took about 40 minutes to clear, but that reopened. highway 101 shows slowing through the santa rosa area. reports of flooding throughout the area. a nice drive for highway 101 itself. just eight minutes for highway

37 down towards 580, the richmond bridge. we watch lucky drive. that's a typical spot and the rain is easing off. back to you. new this morning, the first lady is expected to pay a visit to the bay area today. michelle obama will be in san francisco for a fund-raiser for a local democratic candidate. she will be joined by nancy pelosi. the event will be held at the fairmont hotel. it is expected to wrap up around 8:00. >> two teens accused of setting fire to a san jose school could enter a plea. the 16-year-old and 17-year-old are accused of starting the fire in july. it caused $10 million in damage. both teens are held without bail. today is the third day of deliberations in the murder for hire trial. the jury could not come up with a verdict before the weekend. paul garcia is accused of a

we want to check the morning commute and see how things are rolling. >> the volume is picking up and we are likely to see problems as folks figure out what fell on the roadway. be careful about that. brent gave another warning for folks crossing over the bridge. you will see that construction work going on well hit up. we will try to get you a live shot over the hour. you will see construction going on with the new portion of the tower. it will rise past the car level of the bridge and it will be a distraction. we will show you the pictures and check them on the website. don't be interacted. focus on the road. an issue we did find out about affecting the tunnel itself and the surrounding homes, a power outage in the area and no light through the tunnel from what i understand. both westbound are open for the morning commute. surrounding homes are experiencing up to 5,000 customers are experiencing outages. that may be an issue as you travel as well.

westbound 24 is slow heading over to the maze, slowing down the berkeley curve. no metering lights and a slow down through livermore and 580 with a couple of accidents near first. maybe what's causing this latest slow down. we see it bunching up. we will follow it safely. >> we watch the weather for you, 55 degrees currently? n san jose and not much rain, but patchy clouds around the santa clara valley. 56 degrees in oakland and the winds at 5, down from the 20 to 30 mile per hour wind wees had yesterday. 56 degrees and a northwest wind at close to 6 miles per hour. not much rain to worry about. maybe stray showers around the hilltops and the sierra is a different story. we are heading up to lake tahoe and you want to bring the chains and snow cables. we have chain control.

a man determined to be criminally insane is accused of killing a concord woman. it happened at the state hospital in napa on the highway. the deputies say somebody found the girl dead in a courtyard in the hospital. she had worked there for 14 years. the suspect is a 37-year-old man committed to the hospital in 1993. he now faces murder and robbery charges. >> people in haiti are dealing with more than 3,000 cases of cholera. it's sweeping through the island country while the people are rebuilding from january's earthquake. the hate yen government and aid organizations are trying to contain the disease. they are worried it could get worse as it strikes tent camps in port-au-prince. >> we are trying to inform the people of the camp because clearly they have more for the

they spent most of the sunday in the dark for at least six hours. the power outage went on for quite sometime meaning that trains rolled through and they did not stop. broadway was dark and also the oakland fire department dispatch had to reloi on generators and there were glitches turning them on. oakland police department on seventh and broadway lost power for six hours at the height. about 1500 pg&e customers in oakland were in the dark. those customers back on this morning. over on highway 84, problems lingering near skyline boulevard. a transformer blew down, shut down 84. it was so dangerous our cameras couldn't get close enough to it. pg&e expecting it to have it cleared up sometime around 8:00 this morning. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, today in the bay.

state budget cuts are crippling my classroom, so i can't believe the sacramento politicians cut a backroom deal that will give our state's wealthiest corporations a new billion dollar tax give-away, a new handout that can only mean larger class sizes and even more teacher layoffs. but passing prop 24 can change all that. prop 24 repeals the unfair corporate give-away and puts our priorities first. vote yes on prop 24, because it's time to give our schools a break, not the big corporations.

hot spots in schools to expect the germs to congregate. they are the cafeteria table where your kids are eating lunch today, the computer mouse, paper towel handles, water fountains and sink faucets, the very places where kid guess to clean up while at school. what to do about it? here's what the author suggests. staff and teachers should wipe off the areas with disinfectant throughout the day. in the morning about 13% of the surfaces they swabbed were filled with germs, but by the afternoon it was 50%. it's a good idea for parents to send hand sanitizer and wipes to school with their wis and teach them not to touch the surfaces in bathrooms. instead when they turn on the faucet, use a paper towel. those are public bathrooms and schools just like anywhere else you would go. live fra from capitol hill, today in the bay.

on the right into san francisco and on the left across the lower deck. there will be slowing, but we have shown you what's going on. you focus on the roadway and drive defensively. throughout some of the wet roadways as well and things might be fighting in puddles and trees and watch for that on the morning commute. the slowing that increases and coming down the east shore freeway, about 21 minutes off the bridge down to the berkeley curve. we see good slowing and the back up goes become to west front avenue. slow through the tunnel and the power is out in the tunnel itself. both directions reporting a slow drive between orinda and the oakland side. slow through livermore jammed out of the pass and an earlier accident involving four cars at first and caused the early slow down. the average travel time is 30 minutes from the pass to the interchange. we have a live shot as well.

880 is starting to pick up and that's holding up as far as the speeds go. you can clearly see the city lights in the background. >> enough rain did fall to keep bonding on the roadways. the rain moved on. it's chilly outside and mostly 50s. not all that windy, not like yesterday with gusts up to 50 around the east bay hills. not so bad. light wins and in terms of the showers, we see a few on the coastline. not a lot around the bay area. most of the moisture moved on to the east. one more batch of moisture that will swing on through that may kickoff a few isolated showers. after lunchtime, a decent day on the cool side. 65 for san jose and 61 in sfron. upper 60s on the coast through at least wednesday evening. things look dry. stay tuned. midday rain rolling in and off and on showers throughout the
