airline accident has involved a regional carrier very often with a major airline's logo painted on the plane. it was the crash of flight 3407 in buffalo last year that has focused a spotlight on airline code sharing arrangements. the passengers on flight 3407 bought tickets on a continental flight. but the continental flight called continental connection was really colgan air. >> i think if you were to ask them which airline he was flying, he would have said continental. >> reporter: the ntsb's findings were that the first officer and captain were in over their heads. they failed to operate air speeds causing the plane to stall and crash. now the ntsb is looking at the business of code sharing, how much it saves the airlines and

what it means for passenger safety. >> we think the public has a right to know when they're going to be changing airlines. >> this is a ticket from it? to harrisburg that says very clearly exactly what airline you are on. at all times. >> reporter: and say the regionals, they have doubled down on safety since the buffalo crash. >> we are committed to do everything possible to make sure that there is never another accident. >> reporter: regional airlines which pay their crews lower wages that the commercial airlines make up half of the flights flown every day. if the major airlines are going to paint their logos on a regional plane, they should share more responsibility. >> i would like to see the liability also flow to the major airlines as it does to the regional airlines so that there's real culpability and real responsibility.

>> reporter: the major airlines say it's up to the faa and the regionals to ensure there is in fact one level of safety at the regionals and across the entire board. an faa inspector general last year found that wasn't the case, that in fact the regionals were not necessarily as safe as the major airlines. but since then we're told that the major airlines have focused on safety and things are improving. and just ahead, it wasn't drugs after all, police now say an alcoholic beverage popular with young drinkers caused college students to pass out at a party in washington state a warning to parents about four it's just one dishonest smear after another. and another. just a dishonest politician, trying to hide his record of failure. the real brown plan? more spending on out-of-control state pensions. more favors for the big teachers union, blocking education reform.

is all the result of underaged binge drinking made worse by this product, four loko, wiz some students call black out in a can. now the university wants this banned. >> i guess i wanted to kind of say, like, sorry for the negative attention this has brought on campus. >> reporter: what sent her to the hospital was not a spiked drink as first suspected. she was one of nine students rushed to the hospital after attending an offcampus party on october 8, the students, mostly freshmen women started vomiting and passing out. >> we saw blood alcohol levels ranging from .123 to .335. i want to remind people that .3 can be considered lethal. >> no drugs were found in the sickened students but the police

report says that there was underaged drinking at the party including beer, vodka and run. police put special emphasize on four loko. >> our research shows that every one of the students that was hospitalized had drank four loko. it's equivalent to about five to six beers in a can. >> the college banned four loko from their campus after officials say it sent a handful of students there to the hospital. several washington campuses have also banned the drink and say alcohol education is crucial. >> we have been holding meetings with students and educating students about the dangers of this particular class of beverage. >> reporter: washington state attorney general thinks these drinks should be banned nationally. >> the danger of drinking a drink like this, one of the four to five beer products with caffeine is you might not be aware of how much alcohol you're

>> reporter: never imagining their sightseeing trip would explode in violation as described in tiffany's panicked call to 911. >> are you sure that your husband got shot? >> yes, in his head. >> okay was he thrown out of the jet gee that he's in the water orring? >> he was thrown off the yes ski and i couldn't pick him up to get him on mine. >> reporter: as the barrage of bullets continued, she said she made a gut wrenching decision to leave her husband behind in a bid to save herself. >> he put himself between me and the boat. he was protecting me. >> reporter: the texas sheriff investigating blamed the attacks on warring drug cartels. mexican officials initially questioned tiffany's story and then launched a search for david's body only to be called after off a few days later when a lead mexican investigator was beheaded. >> these are shells we have collected every vacation we have

gone. >> reporter: tiffany has moved back to her home state of colorado. >> how are you going to go on? you're going to start a new life back in colorado without david, how? >> i don't know. i just know i have got god's grace behind me and i know he has a plan and that's all i can stand on right now. >> reporter: a plan she says including honoring david by keeping focus on the border and just how dangerous it can be. tiffany is taking this stance at a time when no one would blame her if she just wanted to stay home and privately grieve over what has become a very public incident. >> it's been almost a month now, tiffany, how are you holding up? >> it's day by day. i mean i have my good days and i have bad days. i kind of still feel like i'm in task mode. >> task mode? >> task mode, just to get the

word out and i really haven't had that time to just kind of reflect on everything that's happened and nights are the worst. >> why are nights the worst. >> because that's when we're together and, mornings and nights we tell each other we love each other and we kiss each other and i miss it. i don't have him there to hug me and hold me anymore. >> as janet said, no one would blame you if you just privately grieved if you went away and, you know, just dealt with this privately. but you have made a decision and pam, you as well, to be out there in front of the public with the message you want to get out to the people and also to the president and the congress. what is the message. >> that we need to wake up. we need to wake up to what's going on in our backyard. i mean obviously, i support what's going on in iraq, but at the same time, this is our backyard. this is right over a river, it's not an ocean, it's a river. and we need to focus on what's going on over there.

>> what exactly is going on over there? >> wars. it's a war zone right now. especially between the cartels. and the authorities hear of the cartels and the cartel are running it. the president and the government, they don't have control of their country, it's the cartels who run the country. >> i remember right after your husband disappeared we talked to you on the air and you said at the time that you both knew that it was dangerous to be in mexico, something you had talked about. looking back now and obviously hindsight is 20/20. what do you wish you had done differently that day? >> i wish we would have stopped and talked to the locals or talked to the authorities and ask them what has happened recently and this is where we're going, what do you think about that? we don't know that was a high drug traffic area, we had no idea. we just knew there had been pirate attacks and we, you know, you don't know where exactly that is on the lake. and we didn't even have a clue

that this was high drug traffic for the drug cartels. >> and do you feel that people should stay out of mexico? would that be your advice to americans? >> yeah. i love mexico, i think it's a great country, it's got beautiful destinations, but i'm not going back for a really long time. and it's sad because i really like it and we were planning on going back over there in february. and i'm not going to -- i don't think we should support a country that's trying to hurt our people over here. >> what have the investigators over in mexico said about the status of the investigation. it was suspended after that lead investigator was found beheaded. has it been resumed? >> it doesn't surprise me that mexico has stopped the search. but i would hope that mr. obama and mrs. clinton, that if this was their child, you know,

they're saying that everything can be done -- they're doing everything that can be done, but if this was their child, would they feel everything has been done? as long as david doesn't come home, enough hasn't been done. so it's like i hope they continue to put pressure on mexico. to find david. to let us put him to peace. >> but as every day goes by, it must cross your mind that y they'll never find your husband, especially if they have stopped the investigation? >> the search has definitely stopped. sunday and monday when i did those long hours with the witness statements, that was with the federal investigators, people who in the federal area and they are -- >> these are mexican investigators? >> yeah, they're the ones that are going to be continuing the investigation, the state has exhausted their resources and now it's kind of a federal investigation. >> and do you trust those

federal investigators to do their job? you met with them for 16 hours, what was your impression? >> i think they do want to solve the case. i know at the same time it's hard to because it is in a high -- area. really they need to call in their navy and storm that area and take over all the borders and the navy is the ones that the cartel actually kind of fear and that's what i think needs to be done. but as for the investigation, they really have if ever come into the united states to meet with a victim. i mean a few times. so that's speaks highly to me and i really do hope they take it serious and want to do something about it and find him. >> we appreciate you being here "toda today, tiffany and pam, thank you very much. and we're back right after this.

left. conflict tigers usually are sent zoos, but salma's in rehab, a new scheme to recondition her to the wild, it's lating her from humans and weaning her back on to other live prey. >> we can see by the face of the tiger what is in the head of the human. once they get wary of humans. >> another female was spotted prowling through a central sumatrian village. forrestry officials quickly alerted caught the 140-pound tiger before any harm was done. she was tranquilized,

microchipped and given an identifying tattoo. she was fit and well, ready for a flight to the rehab center in a remote and protected corner of sumatra, a bumpy jungle drive ending her journey. and so begins the first day of rehab for this tiger, the hope is that she'll soon be able to be returned to the wild. the rehab center is part of a larger conservation area run by one of indonesia's richest tycoons. this corner of sumatra is already home to about 30 tigers, one making a rare appearance during our visit, grabbing a tethered pig. the key problem for tigers remains habitat lost but conservation, it is hoped, this area could provide a home for these troubled tigers.

>> chris, did you know when you were making this film, this is going to be something? i'm on to something? >> no, it was just day to day. you know, hoping everything worked out. i didn't sniff the success of the works. >> bob, this is your baby, it really was and i know when you first shopped this to the studios, disney thought it was too risque, how did you get universal to bite? >> well, it was -- actually i had to make another movie before anyone would take this seriously. unfortunate fortunately, i was able to do "romancing the stone." i thought, well, maybe this guy can make the movie work. but stephen spielberg was always

a fan, and so we took it back to him and he took it to universal. >> when you went back in time, why was it 1955? >> because we wanted marty's character to be the same age as his father. so the movie took place in 1985, so we went back exactly 20 years. >> michael j. fox, they wanted you originally, but you were tieded up? >> they mentioned it to me from early on and i couldn't do it because i was doing family ties and gary goldberg couldn't let me out and i didn't even know about it and then they made a change and they came back to me around christmas time and so it was like the december before. >> after they tried your role with eric and it didn't work out? >> so they had a really brief window to get it done. so i came in and i did the show during the daytime and the movie at night and we got it done.

>> do you even remember making this movie? >> no, i don't think i did make it. there was really big chunks that i can't remember and there are also scenes where we shot my coverage, and they had shot the coverage for the other people before, so i was seeing performances for the first time that i was supposedly in the room with, but i wasn't. >> and christopher, you didn't want this role at first of doc brown? >> i got an offer to go back to new york and do a play. and i thought, that's something i should do. the script for back to the future came in and i didn't know anybody that was involved with it. i looked at it, so i just said, hell with it, you know? and i'll go back to new york and be an artist, you know?

but then somebody said, you know, you should really at least take a look. i took a look and i was persuaded to go back and meet bob. >> thank goodness because i can't imagine another doc brown either. you're the best. >> it changed my life. along with everybody else's too. >> leah, when you told you were going to play lorraine and you're going to play her at the age of 47 and the age of 17. for 47, they had to do a lot of work on you every day? four hours of makeup every day? >> it was really funny because they would be like oh, you look so old. and now of course i'm there, but especially in back to the future 2 i was covered in plastic all the way from here to here when i was lorraine with the big boobs, that was a big dream of mine. >> what was the most fun? >> it was all a lot of work, but for me, the fun was seeing when

bob v. was appear with something we were doing, he would just giggle and it was so hard for him and it was fun to make one of his visions come true. >> you provided the music for the film, but also it was your first acting gig, right? did that come with the deal? >> it was bob's idea. >> you played a teacher. >> face it, i nailed it. in one sentence. >> was that typecasting the nerdy professor? >> it was bob's idea and we thought it would be kind of a nice inside joke if we weren't credited and sort of disguised. >> and marion, you came y you c to the future 3. it's hard to join a well established cast. were you nervous about it? >> i was nervous about the personalities accepting me into the ranks, i felt like a new kid at school. and they couldn't have been better to me.

and michael was a great leading man and host and i had wonderful love scenes with chris who was very romantic and he and i -- my very first film was in the first love scene i ever did. >> and your first onscene kiss was with mary? >> the first of my life. >> do you have a favorite moment, michael, in all of these films? >> i don't know, it's hard to separate the film actually from the experience. >> yeah. >> but in terms of like parts of the film, i love the guitar scene that was so great. and as i said, like leah said, it made he smile thinking about bob, bob would get a shot and then he would say, and he would get this look in his eye and you

think oh, my god, what's he going to do now? and it would be some ridiculous thing and you're like, wow, he should be locked up. >> and the delorean wasn't the original time machine, was it, bob? >> in the first first script it was a refrigerator because it was a whole complicated deal. but we realized if you're going to build a time machine, it should be a vehicle, you should be able to move around in it. so we came one the idea of it being a delorean because we wanted it to look like a spaceship in the '50s. >> when marty lands, the family thinks it is a spaceship in the '50s. >> a >> and president reagan actually quoted it in the state of the yuaningon address. after that point, the movies took on a different significance

culturally. >> they seemed to become part of the culture in a deeper way and they were used to explain a lot of things. the title back to the future is used a lot. >> why do you think it has resonated with people so much, these movies? >> i think it's got a great message and it's also like incredibly entertaining and, you know, beautifully written, the script was beautiful. but i think that whole idea for me, that if you just stand up for yourself in that one important moment in your life, you can change everything and that's really profound and it's a good thing to teach your kids. >> and you all have kids, and they have seen it, i assume, do they get the message? or is it like greek to them? >> it works on all kinds of audiences. >> the cultural references from the '50s, but what resonates with them is the characters and the action in terms of fun and someone said yesterday that the

irony, it's ironic the movie about time travel is that it's timeless. it had something for everybody and it was really wonderful to be part of it. >> do people still call you mcfly? >> in like butan, in the jungles of thailand. i have been in butan and a bunch of monks came by and one of them went, marty mcfly. >> i love that. that tells you something. >> all right, michael, thank you, chris, mary, leah, huey, and bob. it was great that i saw them back to back yesterday and it was a wonderful travel back in time and back to the future. again the back to the future trilogy is now on blu-ray. we are back right after this. ♪

>> you heat it up and pour in three table spoons of vinegar. it curdles, and this is what happens. you drain it, and you end up with the curd at the top and that's ricotta. you strain for 20 minutes, and you have the whole thing. i'm going to transfer it to a herb riscotta briscetto. i always need help in the kitchen. >> this part i'm good at. >> that's that. this is the wey, which you drained off. i'm going to take herbs. >> this you can get rid of. >> this is difficult, skal yons, and chives all chopped up. >> nice. >> mix it together. >> okay. >> salt and pepper just to give it lots of flavor. and then i'm going to grill some bread. i have grilled bread. you want to make the salad dressing? it's the easiest salad dressing. lemon juice, salt and pepper. you just -- >> throw the whole thing? ? >> quarter of a cup of lemon juice and olive oil and mix it

the times reporter is calling it political yant. you wrote all 14 songs, you spent two years getting this album together. what is your reaction hearing all this feedback? >> oh, my gosh, it's unbelievable. you know, when you put two years of your life into something, i mean, especially when you're writing by yourself without any co-writers, having it be like that, it's so incredible. and i spend so much of my time in the past couple of days just like dancing around. i'm so happy. because, you know, this album means a lot to me and the fact that it could possibly mean something to other people and they can apply it to their lives is a major privilege.

and when i started writing songs when i was 12 years old, i would write songs in a room about people in my life. and so as the year has gone on, i have continued to write about my life and the people in it. and i guess more people now are sort of speculating on who those people might be more so than when i was 12 but i'm always going to write about my life and people are always going to speculate on who the songs are about and i'm always going to not tell them. >> whenever you're writing these songs, it's got to be cathartic for you and you've got a big special coming out on thanksgiving? >> yes, i'm excited about that. obviously i'm excited about that. you know, it's so exciting to document the making of an album. this is an album that i made in a way that was unlike any other album i've made before and being

this morning on joy's diet s.o.s., answers to your daily diet dilemmas. joy bauer, our nbc nutritionist is talking about everything from getting past a frustrating plateau. lisa joins us via skype. how are you? >> i'm great. >> what is your question for joy? >> for those of us who are dieting and exercising to get to a healthier weight, what are the suggestions that you have to jump-start when we hit a plateau? >> typically the dreaded weight loss plateau happens for two reasons, one after the newness

of a diet sets in, you tend to relax on the food and you overshoot your calories. that would be the time to whip out those measuring cups and spoons, write down everything that you're eating and drinking, be accountable and the numbers are going to start to go down again. and the second reason is because if you have had a significant weight loss, your metabolism is going to slowly decline in response. and that would be the time to eat a little less and move a little bit more. so trim off about 200 calories from your foot intake and add ten to 15 minutes on to your exercise plan, if you're walking 30 minutes, 40 to 45 minutes and you're going to ignite those numbers on the scale and they're going to start to move downward on the trend again. >> have you lost a lot of weight, lisa? >> 3 2 pounds since starting my program in august.

of iron rish protein. but if you're not, you do want to go out of your way and befriend things like lentil and soy foods, soy nuts. because they're loaded with iron rich protein and nuts and seeds have some iron rich protein as well, but much less than the lentils and the starchy beans and the tofu. if you want much more information and you want to become a vegetarian, i would suggest meeting with a local registered dietitian in your area for a real comprehensive menu plan. and good luck. >> thank you. >> thank you, kelsey, for your question. this is coming to us from lisa in westchester, new york. and lisa writes, i have arthritis in both of my knees and i heard i should take a supplement. what is your opinion on this? >> it's a popular supplement. but i do have to say that the current research is not so encouraging. we do find that if you have moderate or severe arthritis,

two people allegedly pretending to be victims in san bruno face arrests and hefty fines after failing to appear in court. they did not show up in court yesterday. they are accused of trying to get fake i.d.s from the dmv and claiming their belongings burned in the fire in order to get free services meant for victims. the two were arrested last month

but they posted bail. taylor may already be in custody in san francisco on an unrelated charge. pg&e's extensive evaluations of its gas pipelines throughout northern california show 30 manual shutoff valves should be replaced or retrofitted. they found at least 38 gas leaks, four in high-pressure pipes like the one that ruptured in san bruno. the rest were found in distribution mains throughout northern california, including more than a dozen in the bay area. pg&e says most of its valves can only be turned off manually, including the ones that were located in that san bruno neighborhood. more local news coming up in a half an hour. you know it's bad when the press asks if you'd take a lie detector test. meg whitman didn't tell the truth about not voting or about how long she lived in california. she got caught in insider deals at goldman sachs. she changed her story about physically abusing an employee.

this morning on "today's" consumer, your makeup shelf life. some of us have drawers full of eye shadowings and blushes that you haven't used in months. how do you know when to throw them out? great to have you here. listen, this is a good topic because it's kind of scary i think for a lot of us how long we have been keeping our makeup and it's easy to forget, for example, how soon we should throw out our mascara. >> mascara is the worst, because you're introducing bacteria every time you use it. and when you put it next to your eye you can get infections, you can get all kinds of horrible

things. as much as you don't want to throw away this stuff, you need to throw it away every three months. one of the things you know is that it starts to get caky and dry, but once it starts not performing so well, it's time to throw it away. and that's a reason to get cheap mascaras. >> it will also start to smell really bad if you keep it too long. as for eye shadow. i realized as we were doing this segment that i have eye shadows that i have had for three years. and you say we should get rid of them every -- >> three months? because you're introducing bacteria into it every time you use it. >> but they're expensive. >> if you want to make it last longer, you can use disposable and indicators, but you have to dispose of them. they cost under $5, use them once and then throw them away. makeup artists do that a lot.

>> lipsticks, i always worry about keeping them too long, every normal woman, no matter how much she tries can't help but eat some of her lipstick or lip gloss, with her tea or whatever. >> there's something that says you eat like three pounds of makeup over your lifetime. >> it should be looked at by the fda. >> this can actually last about a year, one of the reasons is that lipstick and lip gloss don't have a lot of water in them. but what they do have are oils and the oils become rancid and you can usually tell by the smell. but if not, the lipsticks can get hard and lip gloss can get gloppy. >> as for foundations, is there real negative -- aside from them getting caky. >> they can cause breakouts and they can cause infections if you use foundation that's gone bad.

and you can tell by when they tend to separate and get streaky. >> what if we are really good about changing out our responses. >> a lot of it has to do with what you use to apply the product. if the product is unopened, it can last a really long time. once it opens and it's exposed to the air, and we all keep our makeup in the bathroom and it's warm and humid, that introduces lots of terrible things to your makeup. >> what about the blushes? there's the powder and there's the creamy kind. does one kind have a longer life than the others? >> powder blush really lasts a long time, it can last a couple of years. and the creamy is a little bit shorter in it's life span because it's creamy and it holds on to moisture. and the thing is, once you know that your blush has gone bad, it gets very hard and it doesn't go on very well. so usually it's the performance is matched up with the expiration date. >> okay, so that's good to know.

now one of the ways we can save money is to basically make sure we keep our utensils, i mean our brushes for example, clean, right? >> yes, which most of us don't do. after you use them, you want to run them over a tissue to make sure they're dry and free of stuff. and once or twice a week, you want to wash them in a mixture of water and soap. or you can use one of these sponges and use an anti-bacterial -- makeup artists love these because they come with a cleanser that's anti-bacterial so you can wash them and reuse. and if you use disposable makeup sponges, you have to throw them away, otherwise they're petrie dishes. >> one thing i'll never use is these little timers, some people might enjoy having a little note on their makeup to let thoem knw when they should get rid of it.

far north bay late on wednesday and spill into the rest of the bay area on thursday. supporters of a soccer field that would be named in honor of a fallen police officer are going to have to wait to find out if it will be built. the planning commission delayed the vote last night on construction of rich may field. one community member who is the only person opposed to the project said more tests and studies are needed. but delaying approval could mean that the project will lose its $250,000 grant. if the complex is built, the field will be located on bay road in east palo alto. richard may was killed in the line of duty in 2006 and his family has been trying to get that field built in his honor since his death. the "today" show returns in about a minute.

terrific director. our director tommy kail from the heights. >> your theater is in the round. and a lot of people don't -- a lot of directors don't master that genre. he uses it so beautifully. >> he really, really does. we had to come back, we did an out of town tryout in massachusetts in a stage where you had to bring the show back because the circle and the square people said yes, we want this place, the perfect place to do this. >> you got to redirect it. >> three weeks we spent with tommy redirecting the entire play. it was a huge undertaking. >> we're talking about men and women both liking it. vince lombardi has such great lines. one of them, he says something like it is so easy to fall in love with something beautiful, what's tough is falling in love with something that is difficult. and it makes you -- i don't care what you enjoy watching, you fall in love with all the little life lessons in the play. that's what i like so much, the takeaways. >> i love that you're saying that, because really and truly this play is about those sorts of things. it is about the inspiration, about a man who talked to people

in a way that was often difficult, but it was in their best interest. it was to take them with them, up to become a different person. >> the best they could be. >> and that last speech is literally vince lombardi's speech verbatim where he says it is easy to love something beautiful, bright and glamorous but takes a special person to love something imperfect. if you love that -- in that person, you will lift them up. so this play is about that. and it is about inspiration. and it is about those relationships that can often be fraught and difficult, but when you go through them, and you hang in, it is very powerful experience. a lot of women have been coming and saying, my gosh, this is not just about football this is for us too. >> it is fun to see so many men in the -- in the men's room line. you never see that on broadway. the men have to wait as long as the women do. >> i know. a lot of the men are crying. a lot of the guys who are in the show have said to me, can you see the guys that are crying? >> we live on lombardi time at

republican candidate for senate carly fiorina is in the hospital. we talked with a spokesperson from the campaign who tells us that fiorina is battling an infection. they say it is associated with the reconstructive surgery that she had following her battle with breast cancer. fiorina was scheduled to do campaign events in southern california today. the spokesperson would not confirm which hospital she is in. but she also says fiorina is looking forward to getting back in her full campaign schedule soon. we'll have continuing coverage on-air and online.

that's going to be my nest egg and they find out they have to work longer than they thought they would to make ends meet. >> of course, and we're seeing a lot more people go into retirement still carrying a mortgage. and in 1989, only about 49% of 55 to 64-year-olds still had a mortgage or home equity debt. today that number is almost two-thirds. a lot of people saying should i pay it off, what should i do? we say chip away at the balance as fast as you can while you're still working. >> with the problem, with the changes in health care and that sort of thing, that's a huge issue as well. >> well, this could actually help retirees because what if you retire at 60 and don't qualify for medicare until you're aged 65? there is a big gap there that people are trying to fill. and starting in 2014, you can know if you have some type of pre-existing condition today, maybe an individual policy is just too expensive for you or you don't even qualify, that in

2014 you will be able to buy -- >> that's four years away. what do you do in the meantime? >> in the meantime, if you have a smaller gap you need to fill, you can always stay on your company's plan, for up to 18 months through cobra. you'll have to pay the full bill unfortunately, but it is still going to be cheaper than what you can buy on your own on the individual market. it is also generally more comprehensive coverage. >> a lot of adult children aren't working. can't find jobs. they're moving back home. i think a lot of their parents are saying, i was going to retire but now i've got him or her. >> junior being home. >> tug of war with your priorities, right? what do you do? and we do -- a lot of people have underestimated, you know what will happen when their kids graduate from college, they'll go out on their own and be on their own and that is not the case today. yet you still have to focus on your own goals. so, yes, maybe your child can come move back in with you, you can offer that help, but you don't necessarily need to be helping them get their own first apartment, starting out on their own when you haven't yet secured

your nest egg for retirement. >> if you're a parent, that's all you think about is how you can help your children get to the next step. >> of course. and you figure out how that can work in your plan. there are still things that many parents are doing, maybe you can keep your 26-year-old on your health care plan, that's a great thing for people coming out of school. >> up to 26. >> yes, up to 26, i'm sorry, you're absolutely right. >> once they turn 27, then what? >> they have to be on their own. a lot of people too refinance their homes because they thought that was such a great thing and they're finding out their home again, another reason their home isn't worth what they thought it was going to be. >> one strategy they can always do is downsize. trade down. yes this was easier to do when home values were soaring. but it is still possible today. if you -- maybe you have enough equity in your home to actually buy a smaller place with cash or even if you're still years away from payinging o inoff your mor downsizing from that four

bedroom house to a two-bedroom condo, that will still drastically reduce what you have to pay out every month. >> but then you're psychologically thinking about what has been lost in life as opposed to what you have gained through years and years of hard work. it is an emotional abyss for people, you know? they get so depressed. >> of course. that's why a lot of people are simply working longer. but if you can, maybe you don't have to necessarily work longer, but just transition to semiretirement. maybe you can work a few extra hours or work as a consultant and the big difference here is for every dollar that you earn, that's a dollar that you don't have to pull out from your nest egg. your retirement fund can continue to grow and in the end, you'll ultimately need it to pay for fewer years of your living expenses. >> we don't know what we're going to pay in taxes next year because congress can't get their act together. it is very, very hard. thanks so much. >> we appreciate it. >> coming up next, the deen brothers heating up our kitchen. they're adorable, these two.
