the giants biggest show yet to begin. see how the bay area is preparing for today's first pitch of the world series. federal authorities think they have cracked a major drug pipeline with ties to oakland, and some commuters use quite often. we'll have that story coming up, "today in the east bay." from nbc bay area, reporting what matters to you, this is "today in the east bay." good morning, everyone. i'm scott mcgrew. it is 4:30. you're about 12 hours to first pitch wednesday, october 27th.

some parts of the bay area waking up to frost, but rob m e waking up to baseball. he's live at mccovey cove. good morning, rob. >> reporter: good morning, scott. the hat is on for team support and warmth this morning in san francisco. it's chilly here. we're at about 50 degrees. napa at this hour about 35. so let's walk you through your east bay forecast. we keep a very close eye on the game time itself. coming up later on this afternoon we'll see temperatures here in san francisco actually in the low 60s. as we go through the day at that, we'll see more clouds spilling in during the afternoon, so game one here, no problems. it's going to be pretty nice, temperatures in the 60s. but starting tomorrow, that's when we'll start to see some changes, so the first pitch forecast likely in the low to mid-60s and then dropping quickly into the 50s as we go through the middle and end of the game as we go through those latter innings for game one of the world series. east bay temperatures as we go towards the afternoon, we will

see temperatures around livermore at 67 degrees. livermore right now is a chilly 42. there you see oakland and richmond in the low 60s. over toward concord and pittsburg. we'll see temperatures pretty mild. getting close to 70 in some spots for the afternoon. coming up we'll have a look at your east bay seven-day forecast and talk about the chances of rain possibly creeping in on game two. we'll have a look at that coming up in a few minutes. now back to you. >> all right, rob, thank you much. certainly, mike, there's going to be a lot of traffic around at&t park this afternoon. >> reporter: oh, yeah, even when the giants weren't in town but what we have is the big game. the bay bridge will be a lot heavier as far as the volume of traffic but it will not be necessarily at the morning commute. right now you see headlights coming into the city. we'll see some backups at the bay bridge toll plaza starting midday. right now the east shore freeway shows a nice drive all wait down to the berkeley curve so westbound 80 and southbound 680 off the benicia bridge no problems. the maze a lighter volume of

flow. expect the caldecott tunnel to see a heavy flow today. back to you, scott. >> thank you, mike. new this morning, a major drug pipeline with oakland ties shut down. police say the drug runners used amtrak to move oxycontin across state lines. christie smith is live in oakland with more on the big cross-country business. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. very big. the feds say they busted a man who was carrying pills with a street value of $126,000. they say he jumped on a coast starlight train right here in oakland and that he paid about $360 for a last-minute sleeper car ticket from oakland to seattle, washington. this was a few days ago. he was arrested at the king street station on a train similar to one you might see here. when he arrived, members of a

drug task force were waiting for him, and they say when confronted, he reeked of marijuana and he tried to run. but again, agents say he had about 1,650 pills with him. again, street value $126,000. investigators say he told them that he was actually just a courier and he would be paid $10,000 to carry the pills for someone else. apparently sent new prescribing and manufacturing rules went into effect, users are looking for the old kind of oxycontin, the ones that you crush and snort, not the new ones that are apparently crush-proof. christie smith, "today in the east bay." right now johannes mehserle's lawyers are trying to get him out of jail. they say the former bart officer should get probation and nothing more for shooting oscar grant. mehserle was convicted in july of involuntary manslaughter for

shooting passenger oscar grant at a bart station last year. mehserle's attorneys say he has already lost his career, served more than four months in custody and stands convicted of a serious felony. meantime prosecutors still want him to be sent to prison. they haven't said how long, though. involuntary manslaughter has a sentencing range up to four years. mehserle could get a total of more than 14 years because the crime involved a gun, but that is up to a judge. for the second time in a week a medical worker who helps care for inmates is the victim of an attack inside a bay area jail. a nurse was hurt monday after a man being booked into the martinez jail attacked her. the contra costa county sheriff's department says the inmate faked a seizure and when medical staff responded, he picked up a lamp and struck the nurse in the head. she remains hospitalized and her condition and name have not been released. now, the attack comes several days after police say an inmate

at napa state hospital attacked and killed a psychiatric nurse. new this morning, we should get a closer look inside tess la's fremont facility. they will officially unveil its assembly plant today. diane feen stein will join leaders at the unveiling this afternoon. company leaders will give a tour as well. tessla plans to make the four-door electric car to go along with this, its sports car, at that plant, which used to make cars for general motors and toyota. an east bay school district is jumping into solar in a huge way. the mt. diablo school board approved a contract with sun power for the solar system expected to be the second largest in the country. district staff will meet with principals to go over the plans on car ports at 51 schools and

other buildings. schools in concord and bay point will be the first to get the solar panels between june and october of next year. giants fever sweeping the bay area. a quest for the first world series title in san francisco since 1954. the giants will take on the texas rangers in game one. it starts at 4:57 this afternoon at at&t park. fans are trading in just about anything to get into the game, including intellectual talent. lifelong giants fans dan foust and his son are bursting with pride but don't have tickets. he's offering his company and exhaustive knowledge to anyone who wants to take him to the world series game. if you're still looking to score tickets, here are the latest breakdown from stub hub. giants tickets are going anywhere from 529 for third tier left field tickets, between 1300 and 3,000 for lower box and

the machine. nbcbayarea.com. now today in the east bay traffic with mike inouye. >> and it's 4:38. scott, no mystery about the machines called bart. they are running on time and running longer trains. you talked about the bart system going on and no delays right now. 17 trains on time. longer trains to get to the world series game, keep that in mind today and tomorrow or if there are rain delays, because there's going to be a lot of surface street traffic throughout the streets of san francisco. you folks know the way around, use the bart system to your advantage and avoid parking issues. bart also to the oakland coliseum because the warriors are playing tonight. 880 past the coliseum no problems north or southbound. there's flashing lights around high street. no closures scheduled but there could be construction activity in the area. from 880 over to the peninsula you may want to take the san mateo bridge if you don't have to go directly into the city

4:43. it's going to be a pretty day all across the east bay and the bay area and at&t. expect to see some major improvements as well as east bay parks. they're getting $10 million in federal money to improve trails for hikers and bikers. the project will focus on completing the gaps in the park system. nearly 200 miles of paved trails. it's hoped the improvements will make it easier for folks to commute by bicycle as well as enjoy a weekend hike. mike inouye, i've got good news for you. i was able to get you some

tickets to the warriors. >> well, that's okay, i love the warriors. am i hiding the disappointment on my face right now? i love the warriors. i'll take tickets to the warriors. they're playing tonight, scott, that's good. i like hearing about the parks and how they're improving them by paving over them. let's look at the pavement, 580 westbound coming through livermore. a chilly but easy drive. 580 eastbound, there's typically overnight construction in spots heading towards airway. a little slowing through the sunol grade but nothing as far as the volume of traffic. as you head south down into the south bay, there was a fire overnight, santa clara at 26. now, the fire is out but there might be a few fire trucks and you'll smell that as you're coming from the east bay to the south bay. as we got out of our cars, i smelled that. it's an earlier fire in san jose. back to you. let's check in with rob who is up at mccovey cove and at&t park. and it is chilly up there. chilly down here too. >> yeah. san jose right now i just

checked, about 46 degrees. that's pretty cool, because sunrise is just before 7:30. so we may get very close to the upper 30s in the santa clara valley this morning. one of the things you might want to do is bundle up or get some of this nice, new world series merchandise. but it's still locked up for us this morning. you can see major league baseball about to roll out the merchandise machine. that will be a very popular spot, i suspect, for pretty cool temperatures this afternoon. now, speaking of your east bay forecast, let's take a look at what you can expect as we take you through the next few hours here. obviously some 30s and 40s this morning. good enough for some patches of frost around the north bay. this afternoon we'll see increasing clouds. i think our temperatures may get close to 70 in some spots around the tri-valley, but tomorrow is the day we'll have to watch as the clouds thicken up. no problems for game one of the worlseries but take a nice sweatshirt or light jacket if you have a ticket. temperatures cooling off as you go through the game. your eastbound and beyond forecast, there you saw lots of

60s around the south bay andwo n francisco and to the east bay around berkeley we'll see highs in the low to mid-60s. and into the east bay hills, temperatures in the 60s. but there you go, game two we'll have to call that -- i guess we'll make that a game time decision on just how much rainfall. it looks like showers certainly for the north bay and more rain off and on through the weekend. but halloween, by the way, with our giants orange and black colors should be drying out as we head towards the evening. so a little chilly but overall pretty nice as you wrap up the weekend. we'll continue to keep you updated on the conditions here. very chilly san francisco, but as more and more folks show up, i'm sure everybody will be bundled together cheering on their giants. back to you. myspace reinventing itself. its new site debuts for users today. it includes a brand new strat joe as well. myspace lost its way in the last couple of years, lost users to facebook. the newly designed site will be available to all users by the end of november. myspace says it wants to be the

go-to social entertainment destination for generation y. house prices have been big news all week. there are some changes as well to some very important paper. for those stories let's turn to courtney reagan live at cnbc head quarters. >> reporter: futures are lower ahead of the opening bell and that's after wall street traded in negative territory much of the day yesterday. we did eek out tiny gains by the closing bell. stocks struggled as the rise in consumer confidence did little to offset home prices and earnings. asia was lower overnight. europe also a touch in the red. they have got a couple of hours left to trade. we'll get data today on durable goods as well as new home sales a bit later. the dow did finally post a five-point gain tuesday to 11,169 so that's where trade begins for the dow jones industrial average. the nasdaq was up six points to 2497. here's the big story of the

morning, the toilet paper industry is undergoing its biggest makeover in a century. it's going tubeless. they will start marketing tube-free toilet paper at walmart and sam's clubs orders. they use a special winding process and it's also environmentally friendly. the 17 billion toilet paper tubes account for 160 million pounds of trash. that's enough to stretch from here to the moon and back twice. that's an awful lot of toilet paper tubes. >> so if it's tubeless, how is it hanging up or do we know? >> reporter: because of the special winding process you still get that cylinder look in the middle but there's no tube. >> oh, there's no cardboard. >> reporter: exactly, there's no cardboard but you'll still have the opening to slip the holder into it. >> if there are more changes on commercial paper, please let us know. a long line of storms meanwhile ripping through

several states. high winds did lots of damage. this is lake michigan. look at this, the waves rose about 12 feet high, drawing hundreds of onlookers and at least a few idiots. in greenfield, indiana, high winds knocked down buildings, knocked out power as well. this line of storms stretched from mississippi to new york last night. a veteran of the political scene will miss the final push towards next tuesday's elections but she has a very good reason. she's secretary of state and she's leaving for asia and the pacific. hillary clinton will be on a two-week, seven-nation tour intended to improve relationships in a region dominated by china. clinton will stop in hawaii today to meet with the foreign minister of japan. after that her tour is built around the east asia summit in hanoi. big guns, big bucks, a lot is being spent on the election and some of the biggest names in politics busy on the campaign trail. tracie potts has a look at who's

popping up where. >> reporter: heavy hitters. bill clinton in illinois. >> have you voted yet? >> reporter: john mccain in west virginia and more than three billion in tv ads by election day. >> tv ads are obviously the way that policy has now moved and campaigns are won and lost. >> 28 years in washington and barbara boxer works hard for a title? >> reporter: california republican carly fiorina is hospitalized with an infection, but still on tv. the latest poll has the former hp executive within six points of beating senator barbara boxer. >> she almost brought the company totally down. you did, she did all this, and the company went to half its value and they had to fire her. >> reporter: as president obama casts his absentee vote for illinois's governor, connecticut's candidates sparred over the economy last night. >> we simply have to provide employers with more support in connecticut. we have to make them feel welcome. >> we've had republican governors of this state for the last 20 years. it's time to try something

scott. >> thank you very much. when it comes to cars that cause the least trouble, honda and toyota are still tops. the two automakers still build the most problem-free cars and trucks. now, they'll need to keep an eye on the rear view mirror because consumer reports says ford is closing in fast and general motors has made improvements. hyundai and kia are also showing gains. the magazine bases its ratings on surveys returned by 960,000 subscribers. more passengers are getting dropped off in oakland. federal drug agents say they have shut down a major drug pipeline that ran through the city. christie smith is live in oakland with how they uncovered that operation. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. well, oxycontin is certainly big business. investigators say the man they arrested was carrying pills with a street value of $126,000. the theory is with more agents patrolling the borders and the

freeways, it looks like drugs may be hitting the rails. now agents say an ex-con, lennel massey, bought a last-minute ticket on an amtrak train a few days ago from oakland to seattle. they say he paid $360 cash for a sleeper car. members of a drug task force were waiting for him at the king street station on the other side on a train very much like this. they say he reeked of marijuana and he tried to bolt, but they were able to catch him. they say he had about 1600 pills with him. oxycontin is a pain killer. he told them, though, apparently that he was just a courier and would be paid ten grand to carry the pills with him. investigators believe this may be indicative of a larger rippinring but how big they're just not sure yet. christie smith, today in the east bay. >> thank you much, christie.

now "today in the bay" weather. >> reporter: hello here from at&t park on a very chilly morning. we've got the big fall classic about to get under way just about 11 hours from now, and it feels quite like fall. right now in san francisco chilly temperatures around the bay area. some patches of frost around the north bay as you wake up this morning. let's get into the forecast which you can expect around the east bay and beyond as we show you some of our weather headlines this morning. you'll notice, yes, it's a very chilly start. you may have to scrape your windshields this morning. now during the afternoon the temperatures are going to be pretty nice. we will see increasing clouds in areas from sonoma county northward. there you see the game one forecast. san francisco temperatures around first pitch should be in the low 60s. cooling quickly as we head through the evening. we're looking at 50s as we go through game time. temperatures, you saw 60s and maybe 70 south of san jose
