5:03 am
treatments could have contributed to that infection. fiorina's hospitalization comes just as she was gaining momentum in her race against democratic senator barbara boxer. she was scheduled to be at google headquarters today but her campaign is not saying whether she will make it. victims of identity theft are about to get more help. san francisco will launch an identity theft council at 10:00 this morning at ft. mason center. it is a grassroots project meant to help identity theft victims pie giving free support and recovery help. more than two dozen cities and police departments are taking part in san francisco's council. statistics show some 11 million adults were victims of identity theft just last year. meantime giants fever is heating up again. there are less than 12 hours until the first pitch of game one of the world series at at&t park. >> pretty exciting. kris sanchez is live at at&t park with a look at how san francisco is showing its big giants pride. good morning. >> reporter: oh, i'm showing my
5:04 am
big giants pride. i dug in one out. you thought orange was just for halloween. no way. it is absolutely all about giants fever. already this morning we've seen folks heading off to work wearing their giants gear very proudly and bundled up because it is very cold as rob mayeda said. this is the start of giants pride week. mayor gavin newsom made that declaration yesterday. it's going to run from today through the end of the world series. this is a way that newsom is trying to urge local businesses to show giants pride. he wants to see signs, he wants to see flags over businesses. he's flying a giants flag over san francisco city hall. we also noticed some other landmarks are wearing their orange nice and proud. coit tower was lit up bright and orange. civic center plaza along with city hall are orange and we also saw orange at the ferry building. we also saw the giants flag flying proudly over the ferry building as well. mayor gavin newsom will be at
5:05 am
the game tonight. he has pride on the line. he also has a bet. you know those friendly mayoral wagers? he has one with the mayor of arlington, texas. the loser in this deal is going to have to put on the victor's jersey and wear that while they do community service in the other person's hometown. there's also a food wager as well. we can show you that. the traditional bet of the local goods and fares. newsom gets barbecue. that's the end of that. of course we have so many other things to offer. we have crab, sourdough bread, that gharidelli chocolate. now, you may be wondering who is on the mound. tim lincecum will go up against cliff lee. arguably both of these pitchers are the best that each team has to offer, but lee does have a small advantage, only statistically speaking, of course. lee has never lost a playoff game.
5:06 am
he is that good. he has seven career starts, seven wins. lee earned a 1.26 e.r.a. lincecum is no slouch. he has two wins in three starts. he has a 1.93 e.r.a. while he trails lee in that department, he does lead in one category. he has two cy young awards. cliff lee only has one. coming up, we'll show you the lengths to which some fans are going to just see the game and get close to all of the action and we'll also show you how you can show your giants pride while also helping out your local animal shelters. i'm here in mccovey cove. kris sanchez for "today in the bay." >> thanks, kris. meantime giants fans are doing everything they can to try to shake up the rangers. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell is live with an unusual wakeup call that's in the works. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura and brent. you know, san francisco does have a very rich musical history. so out of the kindness of their

5:08 am
least a thousand people. authorities are also going to try to limit the number of people in mccovey cove. there had been talk of putting up big screen tvs like they did during the world cup soccer tournament at the civic center plaza with the big screen tvs. that was discussed earlier in the week but we have not heard anything since on that. you also know there's the knot hole. well, the gated fence in the back of right field, they call it the knot hole on the promenade. you can go there. they'll be opening up three hours before game time. first pitch again tonight at 4:57. what you do is you go in there and you're asked to rotate every few innings. i did that during the last world series in '02 and it was at least an opportunity to see a little bit of the game. it beats a kick in the head, i guess, as far as just standing out here and not being able to see it. so those are some of your options. your best bet will cost you a lot of money. reporting live, bob redell,

see some clouds spilling in as we head through the afternoon, but today game one of the world series will be dry, so that's no problem. it's tomorrow, though, we'll see more clouds spilling in and that could lead to some changes. as we go hour by hour, yes, a very chilly start will not rule out patchy frost on a few windshields. as we head toward the afternoon, not all that bad. areas south of san jose, out towards morgan hill and gilroy will be very close to 70 degrees so a pretty pleasant forecast for the afternoon. the seven-day forecast keeps a close eye on tomorrow's weather as we'll see a chance of showers. halloween as well, sunday morning may see a few showers early and we clear out for trick-or-treat time. i checked the forecast for arlingt arlington, texas. about 82 degrees today. compare that to 62 in san francisco. we call this pitcher's weather. cooler, dense air, the ball does not carry as far so that should help our pitching staff taking on one of the hottest hitting teams in san francisco. let's send it back to you in the

you're smelling in the air. the peninsula moving nicely but caltrain a great option into the city because you don't have to worry about parking. >> sounds good. thanks a lot. we want to check in with rob and take a look at the forecast. >> reporter: yeah, and you know here's one of the few places in the bay area you've got your merchandise booth all set up, no line, but it's not open yet. you've got nowhere -- everywhere around here, 24 willie mays plaza, merchandise for the world series just can't escape your field of vision this morning. once these open up, you're going to want a nice giants sweatshirt or jacket. it is cold this morning, the coldest morning so far we've seen this fall around the bay area. let's show you the forecast. as we go through the day today we'll see temperatures around game time likely in the 60s. cooling quickly, though. we don't have to worry about rain today. any showers we see we suspect will be north of sonoma county. it's tomorrow where you start to see changes. your hour by hour forecast, very chilly start.
5:40 am
as we jump towards lunchtime you'll see temperatures start to climb to the upper 60s to near 70. here we go, your seven-day forecast today just fine, it is tomorrow we'll see the chance of showers maybe impacting game two. as we head through halloween, showers end just in time for trick-or-treat time. so an overall decent at least second half of the weekend forecast. that's how things look here at at&t park. now back to you in the nice, warm studio. >> i know. i'm feeling a little guilty. thanks. it's 5:40 right now. decision 20 ten, we're going to break down some of the ballot propositions you may not have heard too much about. and charging you to get your own money. we're going to have a live report on how much bank fees are costing you these days. and getting to know your giants this morning. this map is edgar renteria. he plays shortstop for the orange and black. renteria is one of the only players on the team with a world series ring already. he won back in 1997 when he was with the florida marlins. let's hope he brings some of
5:41 am
that world series magic to san francisco. in game seven of the '97 world series, renteria knocked in the series-winning run ceiling the championship for the marlins. reporting what matters to you, you're watching "today in the bay" with laura garcia-cannon, brent cannon, business and technology with scott mcgrew, and traffic with mike inouye.
5:42 am
5:43 am
the excitement is truly building at at&t park this morning and across the bay area as giants fans get ready for game one of the world series. these are some expected highs across the bay area. not too bad. cold start to the day. 66 in palo alto, milpitas 68, hayward 65. banks are charging record fees these days. in fact fees for checking accounts are at an all-time
5:44 am
high. they are trying to recover fees they lost. tracie potts is live in washington, d.c., this morning and that's one of the places where they are seeing some of the highest fees these days. >> reporter: brent, good morning. good morning, everyone. bankrate.com looked at the ten largest banks and thrifts in 25 different cities around the country. what they found is that fees are at an all-time high. overdraft your account, that's $30 for each transaction. if you fail to maintain the minimum balance, that's $13 a month and atm fees now averaging $2.33. it may not include the fee for the other bank. free checking accounts down 10% over the last year because many banks aren't offering them anymore. they're trying to recoup funds because the federal reserve has said they can't automatically give you overdraft protection. banks were making $37 billion a year from that. also interest rates are low, which is good for consumers, but
5:45 am
bad for banks because they're trying to get a high rate of return when they lend that money. bottom line, if you want to save money, you need to stay within your atm network and don't overdraft your account. you could save over $600 a year. brent and laura, back to you. >> some good information. thanks a lot. time now 5:45. good morning, everybody. thanks for joining us. i'm brent cannon. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. we'll get to traffic and weather in about two minutes, but first decision 2010. this morning a new poll shows that support to legalize marijuana no longer growing like a weed in california. reuters reports 53% of likely voters now oppose proposition 19, up 10% from july. among democrats, 54% support 19 -- proposition 19 compared to 45% who oppose it. among republicans, 66% oppose proposition 19 while 30% support it. >> we want to check in with our political analyst, larry gersten.
5:46 am
good morning, thanks for coming by, appreciate it. always good to see you. so why does support seem to be decreasing right now? it seemed like there was a fevered pitch and a lot of support earlier but now the polls have reversed and people are owe possessesed. >> early enthusiasm but we didn't see the money coming in for this like the last time around when they tried to legalize it two or three years ago. because of that that was an early indicator something wasn't going right. what people begin to think as we get closer to the election process is, you know, what's going to happen, how is this going to affect law enforcement, what kind of controls are we going to have. we already see lots of problems in the cities trying to control how many of these dispensaries we have just for medical marijuana. all these uncertainties begin to grow. when people are uncertain, no matter what the issue, they tend to vote no. it's the conservative side of us, and i mean that with a small c. >> and you say even if it passes, victory will literally
5:47 am
go up in smoke. >> that is the federal government preempts the states on this issue. when it comes to dealing with any kind of drug, and marijuana, cannabis, call it what you want, has been declared a drug by the fda, the congress has the right to go ahead and determine what's going to happen. congress authorizes the fda to control the drugs. this is a drug. so a lot of people may be unhappy about that, but the fact of the matter is it is within the hands of the federal government. you know, people have looked around right now when it comes to the 14 states that have medical marijuana. well, the federal government has sort of looked the other way because they figure, well, maybe there's a medical reason. once you legalize it altogether, the feds would swoop in like that. >> and that's been of the thing, they have been kind of stand-offish in some places, but they may change that stance and become more aggressive. and the pro prop 19 camp just got a big donation from a billionaire. >> yeah.
5:48 am
he gave a million dollars, which boy the way is nothing compared to what he gave last time. last time he was a real leading proponent. a lot of people have held back and said you know what, even with what you think would be a more friendly administration, no, you can't flaunt the courts, you can't flaunt congress, you can't flaunt the federal government because they don't like it. >> thanks, larry. now, "today in the bay" traffic with mike inouye. >> all right. 5:48. with all the activity in the area let's not forget the warriors are also playing tonight. oakland 880 a great option, getting there also is bart. 880 not crowded now but it will be later on. also taking bart into the city, longer trains because of the world series. traffic and congestion, bart is giving longer trains as well. that will get you in to the ballpark. keep in mind after the game they typically close streets starting
5:49 am
at the seventh inning. so that might be an issue for you. san mateo bridge will take you over to the peninsula from the east bay. you can take caltrain up the peninsula to the ballpark as an option as well. back to you guys. >> that was me. i told larry he had enough time to go. >> we're checking in with rob this morning taking a peek at the forecast. man, i don't know what it's like out there, but it's warm in here. >> come on! >> reporter: it is really cold out. even this san francisco. folks from out of town, they come to san francisco and probably say, oh, we're going to get just nothing but fog around the city. but i can tell you we've got stars over san francisco, the moon is out, it is cold. when we lose the fog on nights like this, it's like sleeping without a blanket. all the heat from the day before goes back into space and we cool down big-time. some spots, especially around the north bay, in the 30s and 40s. so let's get right to the game
5:50 am
time forecast. we're talking 60s for the afternoon, so not all that bad, but it will be cooling quickly as we go through the later innings or any extra innings we might see, temperatures quickly dropping into the 50s. so hour by hour don't be surprised to find patchy fog or frost maybe on your windshield but clear skies elsewhere. in the south bay temperatures later on this afternoon as warm, getting close to 70 around morgan hill and gilroy, low to mid-60s around san francisco. today weather is not an issue other than it's bone-chilling cold this morning out here. but tomorrow stay tuned, we may see showers as we approach game two and then more showers as we kick off the weekend. that's the story here from at&t park. chilly this morning. accepted send it back to you in the heat andy warmer studio there in san jose. >> we've opened all the doors and windows here, rob, just so you won't feel too bad. the big guns are also out and the big bucks on the
5:51 am
campaign trail. this is the final push before the november elections. we have seen all across california reasonly when the races are tight, the big names and heavy hitters come out and it's the same across the country. bill clinton will be in illinois, john mccain will be in west virginia. analysts say by election day, more than $3 billion toetal wil be spent in television ads. >> it's obviously the way that pal s policy has moved and campaigns are won and lost. carly fiorina is in the infection. she has an infection associated with reconstructive surgery from breast cancer. the latest polls show her within six points of unseating barbara boxer. a new nook fills a niche. scott mcgrew joins us from the news room. >> barnes & noble announced an all color nook e-reader at a press conference last night. why color? because magazines and children's
5:52 am
books are no fun on this, the bhak and white version. the nook obviously taking on the ipad. you can order this new one starting today with shipping expected middle of next month. good news/bad news on wall street. durable good orders are up. bad news, a growing suspicion that the fed might not dedicate as much money as expected to buying up debt. just a few hundred billion dollars. and you know the world is strange when i say just a few hundred billion. now economists call what we expect the fed to do quantitative easing. you'd call it printing money. that's actually what happens. the fed just creates money out of nowhere and uses that to buy up government debt or mortgages, injecting money into the system. hopefully, laura, to get things going. >> all right, thank you very much. you'd think that after 56-year world series win drought fans would have their stress management routines down pat. this week fans are dealing with a different brand of torture.
5:53 am
>> bob redell continues our live coverage at willie mays plaza outside at&t park. the giants play the type of game that makes fans afraid to leave their seat. you cannot leave to go get some popcorn, you've got to stay put and watch. >> reporter: yeah, good morning. it isn't torture yet because the giants are here. remember, game one tonight against the texas rangers. now, if you want to get over here to see the game and don't have tickets, there are some other options. you can rent a kayak and go into mccovey cove. there's an orn wner of a kayak rental place that says they expect about a thousand tonight. authorities will keep a lid on that number. you've also got the knot hole, the wire gate there, the metal gate there, iron gate at right field. it's on the promenade between mccov
5:54 am
mccovey cove and right field. you have to rotate every few innings. and there's also talk, the city also had talk of possibly putting up a big screen tv somewhere in some central location like they did for world cup soccer. and of course you can try to buy a ticket. they're available on websites like stubhub.com but they're averaging around $800. so it would cost you to come out here to see that first pitch tonight at 4:57 here at at&t park. there's some other ways you can get your hands on tickets, creative ways, mind you. that's why we have kris sanchez just down the street to fill us in on that. >> reporter: good morning to you, bob. people get very creative around this time of year when their favorite sports team makes it into the finals. as the giants are headed to the world series, the first game tonight, we saw some very creative offers on craigslist, obviously. one of them we saw was two bleacher seats for a world series game in exchange to three
5:55 am
home games, 50 yard line tickets to three 49er games. i'm not sure that one will pay off for you. somebody else is offering a stay at the golden gate king suite at the lodge in sausalito. that would be a gorgeous stay, obviously. some folks are enjoying -- offering dental services. one person is offering up their suv. so how do you get to the game? five nights at a four-bedroom home in hawaii. now, the fans obviously think that the giants are going to go all the way, but what do the professional bookies think? we checked in on las vegas, and las vegas sports consultants are picking the rangers to win it. they give the rangers an edge. money is as high as $140, and that means that betting -- rather the money line is as high as $140. that means that the betting on the giants is the bigger payoff.
5:56 am
the "examiner" reports for every $1 you bet, you could win $1.20. obviously gambling is illegal in california so you would have to go to nevada to set your wagers. nbc sports picked the rangers to win it in six but what do those stinking guys in new york know? not this nbc station. we are picking the san francisco giants. now, we do have a resident astrologyist who is going counter to what manager bruce bochy is doing. she said she wouldn't have started tim lincecum in game one, she would have started him in game two. here's why. >> i think i would have started him for game number two because matt cane's chart who i also prepared looks a tiny bit stronger. i think i would have given timmy ailing extra day. >> reporter: the bay area woman says matt cane's birth chart has
5:57 am
an edge over lincecum's birth chart today but either way the giants are going to do great and win it tonight. coming up we'll talk about the pitching matchup that we'll see tonight. arguably each of the best pitchers on each team will be on the mound tonight. we'll talk about that and also talk about how the bay area is celebrating the week that is now san francisco giants pride week. back to you. >> a lot of fun. thanks so much. we're not even close to wrapping up our giants fever coverage. another hour of live reports from at&t park next. and we'll take a look at how the bay area is celebrating the giants trip to the world series. look at the orange there. plus a drug pipeline is derailed. see how feds says drug oh rougt. his drugs through the east bay.
