people are gathering to rally against the arizona immigration law. in about an hour, the ninth circuit court of appeals to hear arguments for and against senate bill 1070. that's the attempt to crack down on illegal immigration in the state. president obama took the arizona law to court last summer, claiming the legislation interferes with federal immigration prerogatives and violates the u.s. constitution. the case is being held in san francisco because the ninth circuit court handles appeals in cases with western states. another update in a half hour.

politics. and what we're saying to the culture at large is that you will be rewarded if you are mean and if you're nasty and you're hurtful. >> the question i think a lot of people are asking, have we already fallen so far down that slippery slope that there's no way we can claw our way back to a time of civility? what to you think about that? >> i think we can get back, the internet has been one of the main things here. >> why the internet, because we can be rude and anonymous at the same time. >> you're allowed to be vitriol and there's no consequence. >> but the people we just saw in the piece are using their real names and they're doing it in public. we'll adapt, we always adapt to new technologies and it's still

early days for the internet, it really is. so people, it's a global need, you can -- your words go everywhere. and we never have those opportunities before, to me, human nature hasn't changed. people are fundamentally the same. it's the opportunity, so in the old days, you might be sort of uncivil to an immediate friend or a neighbor on the next farm, today it's the whole world. we now have an opportunity to be this way but we have learned to control it. >> what do you say to parents who are trying to create civility and instill manners and things like that and yet everywhere the kids look, they see this sort of thing. >> for one thing, you have to model, that is parents have got to be civil. and with an almost 50%, 40% divorce rate, there's a lot of incivility in the home. we have got domestic violence, all of those things, so parents have to be civil if they want

and during the period of time that i was recovering from both events, going through some of her possessions brought up the past and apparently, everything i threw away, she kept. >> the good mother she was. >> the good mother, she must have followed behind me and gathered all these things. because it was through those wonderful photographs and her diaries that i was able to relive a part of my life they put aside. >> you refer to her as the source for all stability and fun. is she the one that encouraged you to get into acting? >> she was the ballast in my ship, so to speak. she had always been behind me no matter what i wanted to do, but as i was a child bouncing around the house in toe shoes, she thought maybe it would be a good idea if she gave me some lessons. >> you took lessons in hollywood and two of your classmates were

natalee wood and who would have known you would have end up married to robert wagner. >> but it was also the part of some of the things that i was uncovering through my mother's diaries was how different -- we always hear about how different life was, but how small a community california was and los angeles in particular. and how all of our lives crisscrossed and how what we would call coincidence really wasn't because the community was so small. now that the community is larger, now that the corporate world has taken over the motion picture industry, we're much more privately by our operators and we don't seem to -- our lives, the personal part of our lives doesn't seem to criscross as much. >> you talk about your relationship with actor lynn

income, what was the finding? >> 63% of the retires parents say, of course my kids know, but when the adult children were ask, only 42% said they had the same conversation. and we saw the same thing when it came to expenses to a smaller degree. more parents said they know and fewer children said they know. maybe the parents think they are conveying the information but they're not saying exactly what they think they're saying. but on the side of the adult children, none of us like to think that our parents are getting older, none of us like to think that our parents may be failing in any way, so maybe we're not listening as well as we should be. >> so all that's not good, but it's even more alarming to you? why is this alarming to you? >> it's alarming because if we don't pay attention and our parents start to fail, they could not be taking care of themselves as far as their health goes and they could be

neglecting their own basic needs. and we're seeing alarming numbers of seniors falling into debt and bankruptcy. >> and why is that happening because of the economy? >> this is the second year in a row that seniors are not going to get a basic cost of living increase in their social security payments at the same time the cost of their prescriptions and other things are going up. you'll see 73% of adults 55 and over have revolving credit card balances and the number of adults in that age group going into bankruptcy has gone up 1 1% in the last two decades. >> we need to get involved but this is a generation that -- >> this is the generation that was raised to think that talking about money was rude. and if you try to broach the conversation with your parents and they're not inclined to have them, you need to think about craftier strategies like bringing their lawyer, their accountant, their financial planner into the conversation to tell them why this is important. >> there are a couple of things

you say we should be talking about with our parents and one of them is the income, you say, hey, mom and dad, listen, i just want to make sure you're good. >> i want to make sure that whatever you're bringing in, you're spending less than that so that there's some sort of a safety net. i also want to make sure i know where everything, a list of important legal documents, a list of accountants and all of those things. so if i ever have to follow the bread crumbs i can do it. there was a story yesterday about the lack of ability to handle money and credit is one of the very first signs of dementia and alzheimer's it can cause incredible problems. >> so you're saying if we're not paying attention, we're going to miss some of the signs. >> and it will fall on us later. >> what you didn't msnbc is your your -- didn't mention is insurance.

practical chic and it was for modern women of her day and we're still benefiting from her vision today. she also had a very advanced view of the business, handbags, costume jewelry and of course fragrance. there were some sleepy periods for channel along the way, but that ended in 1983 when carl came in. he was already a notorious fakn fashion star and what he did was reinvent all of cocoa channel's photography and doing it not with excessive reverence. because excessive reverence can kill a fashion house. >> the bikini which came on in 1962 and designer denim, the jeans which came about in the late '70s. >> the bikini, our focus on the issue is one of its boldested a mirrors. who in 1962, he did a very clunky tricked out two-piece

version in wool, two years later, he made it a model kini, and a lot of people saw the picture of peggie mop pet in a topless swimsuit. our editor at the time said it was fabulous, she just loved it and two days later the paper retreated from that, and said it was a bust. the pun was intended. >> let's take a look at some important designers, halston in the '70s and bill blass in the '80s. >> halston did so much, he was a combination of midwest where he was raised and new york city. in the midwest he got his pragmatism. he made suede a household world. and from new york he got the glamour and living on the edge. the look was chic but plain and simple and bold. also for designers of today, we're doing the high low thing. what happened with him, he

signed a long-term contract with jcpenn jcpenney, at the time it so infuriated his luxury retail he lost his business. >> you talk about the influence of for working women, liz claibor claiborne, donna karen, ralph lauren, calvin klein. let's get to some of the name s outside of the fashion world. first of all the first ladies who had a flare for fashion and you start out with jackie onassis. jacqueline kennedy was an on obsession some would say from the time she was a young senator's wife and we followed her relentlessly. to a point to cross over to stocking. but obsessively. every woman did and she was so chic, she was so -- she was just so elegant. she was such a new vision in the white house. and we also covered the

your morning commute. >> we have an accident on the south bay what's sticking around here on the northbound side, just cleared from the slowing, but it took about a half an hour for that to happen. the rest of the south bay, including 87 and 85, that's one of the last to pick itself up there. we do have some delays for b.a.r.t, ten minute delays, heading toward s.f.o. daily in san francisco. minor delays there, but if you're outside, i guess that's improving. >> and sunshine for most of the bay area today, close to 71 degrees in san francisco, even 73 around santa cruz, but look out along the coast, next couple of days we're going to see some waves coming in, 13 to 15-foot swells by wednesday morning. so big surf coming on in, but no worries about rain obviously through the end of the week. temperatures in the 70s and 80s.

60s and 70s along the coast. investigators are trying to figure out what sparked a four-alarm fire in the south bay early this morning. it happened at san jose metals which is a recycling shop. the smoke drifted across highway 101. crews were working to put out the hot spots, now the center recycles plastic and metals but flames burned the back of both buildings. city leaders will announce the creation of more than 1,000 new jobs. the four season is a local oakland company that makes sunroofs and other home products and today's announcement will happen at 2:30 this afternoon. more local news in a half an hour and we return to the "today" show in just a minute. hi! welcome to progressive.com.

u.s. ninth circuit court of appeals in session right now in san francisco. the court is hearing arguments for and against arizona's comprehensive immigration bill. president obama took arizona to court last summer claiming it interferes with federal immigration prerogatives and violated the u.s. constitution. the case is being held in san francisco because the ninth circuit court of appeals handless cases in nine western states. the game is being played in texas but you can still join thousands of giants fans watching the game at civic's center plaza in san francisco. the city will air tonight's game on big screen tv. you should show up early and use public transportation to get there.

body odor. it is that time in between, right. and we notice also that men have more body odor than women do. >> yes. >> why is that? >> they have larger glands and secrete more sweat. >> people are embarrassed to tell someone that they have b.o. we don't say the word, we have to use the initials. what is the right way to tell someone? >> i think if it is becoming enough of an issue that it is affecting your relationship with someone you have to speak up, it is a kind thing to do to include them in on what's going on. key things, be kind about it, do it in private always, and make sure you make it clear that if the situation were reversed you would want them to tell you. >> what if someone sits next to you in the cubicle really is rank, and you want to say something, but you have to -- you're not -- it is like 24/7, but it's enough. >> in an office setting it is a little more difficult than friend to friend or with a family member. i would talk to your boss and

"look at me now, the joy fit club" and the newest member about to be induetectived. >> it is melissa. >> i've been overweight since i was 6. in third grade i had to go to physical therapy for gross motor issues. i couldn't skip like the other kids, and i never learned how to ride a bike. i was aware of getting bigger and bigger, but i tried to hide it. the most painful part of being overweight was the loneliness. i was not able to keep up with the preschoolers that i teach, and could not love myself enough to be in a dating relationship. food was a possession and a comfort. at my heaviest i was 340 pounds. i was on blood pressure medicine, i had horrible asthma and i was dying a slow death. one morning i woke up and was tired of living in pain and decided that i would change my life. i wanted to do it all in the public eye, posting it every

she measures portions, and she has continued to lose an amazing amount of weight. >> i was so moved by what she said about the loneliness is the hardest part of it. >> she's loving life now. she started this journey a little over two years ago and she is just full speed ahead. >> let's check out the portions. >> one of the common things she was overeating was cereal. and she would have four servings of cereal in the morning. she is still eating the same foods, the same cereal, but whipping out a measuring cup and she's measuring one serving of cereal. >> that looks crazy big to me. >> it does. >> you think it is healthy, you're going to eat more of it. >> let's go to the other two and then we'll bring her out. >> potato chips, eating out of the bag, going through 11 ervings. she goes for the bake version now but portions out one serving. in terms of popcorn, instead of the large bag of popcorn, she's buying smaller bags and also she's buying the 94% reduced fast. from three servings to one serving. >> you get used to it.
