enforcement to protect, not take life. >> it is our prayer that they allow us to see the justice system at work by giving him the maximum of 14 years. >> not even the max numb they say would be enough. they don't believe the shooting was unintentional and don't think mehserle is remorseful. >> we haven't had an apology. he has been in hiding, in court and national television and still hasn't expressed condolences for our loss for his so-called mistake. should we be entitled to an apology? >> he cried his eyes out talking about seeing oscar grant with a bullet in his back and i don't see how anyone could say he is not remorseful. >> mehserle's attorney said he

plans to apologize in open court. >> he is going to make a clear statement to the grant family of how sorry he is that his actions took the life of oscar grant. that's going to be clear and emphatic. >> no matter what the sentence, mehserle will live in a prison of his own making for the rest of his life. it's his open he will be releaseed from jail soon. >> i hope he and i walk out arm and arm. this young man should not serve another day in jail. >> he said his client is ready to face whatever happens today oscar grant's family will certainly have an emotional day as well. his aunts, uncles, mother and girlfriend plan to make statements in court, telling the judge how much they have been impacted by it all. in los angeles, i'm jody hernandez for today in the bay. >> oakland police will be ready
