this viral video is still smoking today, friday, november this viral video is still smoking today, friday, november 5th, 2010. captions paid for by nbc-universal television and good morning, everyone. welcome to "today" on a friday morning. i'm matt lauer. >> and i'm meredith vieira. literally, the calm before the storm in port-au-prince, haiti, as now hurricane tomas bears down. >> the big, big concern this morning is the safety of the 1.3 million people who are still living in tent cities following january's earthquake there. up to 10 inches of rain is expected in some areas of that n nation. emergency crewsear that combined with high winds could produce dangerous mud slides. we're going to go live to haiti for the very latest in just a couple of minutes. then to politics. the latest fallout over that big win for republicans in tuesday. they picked up at least 60 seats

in the house and at least six in the senate, but could that number of republican gains in the senate been even higher? this woman, christine o'donnell, lost in delaware. a lot of people say the people she beat in the primary could have won. we'll talk to her a little later. and an up close and personal look at the world's most expensive. it's valued at a billion -- that's with a "b," $1 billion. now let's take a look at that hurricane taking at aim at haiti. >> reporter: the winds are calm, but the rains have been falling steadily since last night. southwestern haiti, though, is much closer to that hurricane. the fear is the rains could cause mud slides and flash floods, which is why yesterday the haitian government tried to evacuate one of the big tent camps here, but ran into trouble trying to do that. with the storm approaching, the

haitian government had hoped to clear out one of its most vulnerable tent camps, filled with 6,000 earthquake victims. but when u.n. workers offered to move the children, disabled, and elderly to a hospital for safety, they met with loud resistance from residents. the confrontation became so heated some of the aid workers had to leave the camp. >> there have been some security incidents, so our registration teams had to pull out. it's very difficult to rye to conduct these type of operations without registration. >> reporter: the residents say they're worried about losing their possessions here and are concerned about where they'll be taken and if they can come back here after the storm passes. the camp sits at the base of a mountain outside port-au-prince and is especially vulnerable to wind and flooding rains. as the hours pass, u.n. officials worried about the evacuations being delayed and assured the residents they could return here. finally, tempers cooled and the first few hundred residents lined up to be evacuated, saying

they feared mud slides and flash flooding participate they were loaded by peacekeeping forces on to united nations trucks headed to shelter. they're now among the relatively few tent camp residents across the country to be evacuated. with 1.3 million haitians now living under tarps and tents, most have nowhere to go, despite the urging of the haitian government to seek shelter with family and friends in safe housing, most of these earthquake victims now ride out the storm in rickety tents. now, health officials worry that the rain could also worsen the cholera epidemic by spreading the contaminated water, which has already killed more than 400 people here. meredith, back to you. >> mark potter, thank you very much. mr. roker, where's this storm headed, how bad is it going to be? >> the bad news is it doesn't look like it's going to get over land, so it's going to stay over the warm waters and probably continue to strengthen. it's 175 miles west of port-au-prince, haiti, 85 miles

per hour winds, moving north-northeast at 9 miles per hour. the hurricane-force winds, tropical storm-force winds extend well out into much of haiti, towards the eastern ends of haiti. you can see eastern cuba, western haiti bear the brunt of those winds and on into the turks and caicos and southeastern bahamas as well. that's going to be a big problem. rainfall amounts, we're talking the anywhere from 5 to 10 inches of rain over haiti, and of course, with the mountainous terrain, and much of it deforested, they've estimated up to 80% of the forest has been cut down for people to use for firewood, that's going to exacerbate the mud slide problems. the path of the storm continues on into the atlantic by early saturday morning and continues on as a category 1 storm. the big problem, not so much the winds, but really the rains. 10 to 15 inches of rain is going to cause massive mud slides and flooding. >> mr. roker, thank you very much. we appreciate it. let's turn to politics now, where the top republicans in

congress bolstered by tuesday's election results are promising big changes in washington. nbc's kelly o'donnell is on capitol hill. good morning to you. >> reporter: hi, matt. it's been a very rough go for democrats since tuesday night, but they do have some good news this morning. washington state, the senate race there that we've been waiting for a result, it goes to democrats. senator patty murray wins a fourth term and she beat dino rossi, who was selected by national republicans, to try to challenge her. it was one of those mail-in ballot states, so it took a little longer. and now president obama has at least one more democrat he can look to. she certainly defended all of his policies on the campaign trail. that stood out. but now mr. obama has less power and fewer votes in congress. >> people are still catching their breath from the election, the dust is still settling. >> reporter: but republicans do not appear winded. taking their aim at the top. >> i don't want the president to fail, i want him to change. >> reporter: the leading republican in the house, john boehner, also firing back in an interview with abc news. >> there seems to be some denial

on the part of the president, and other democrat leaders, the message that was sent by the american people. >> i think it's clear that the voters sent a message. which is, they want us to focus on the economy and jobs and moving this country forward. >> reporter: but boehner says it's more than that. >> when you have the most historic election in over 60, 70 years, you would think that the other party would understand that the american people have clearly repudiated the policy that they've put forward in the last two years. >> reporter: something to talk about when the president has congressional leaders over to the white house later this month. >> it's not just going to be a photo op. hopefully, it may spill over into dinner. >> some have said it was indelicate of me to suggest that our top political priority over the next two years should be to deny president obama a second term. >> reporter: speaking to a conservative audience, senate minority leader mitch mcconnell

did acknowledge that republicans still can't repeal health care reform, cut spending, and end bailouts on their own. but his solution, defeating president obama in 2012. >> the only way to do all of those things is put someone in the white house who won't veto all of these things. >> it may take some renegades going rogue to get us there. it may take folks shaking it up to get there. >> reporter: and 2012 speculation always takes off when sarah palin's political action committee launches a new video. this time with glossy images of the winning candidates she endorsed and a touch of ronald reagan. >> this is our moment, this is our morning in america. >> reporter: and it is sarah palin's home state, alaska, which is still the question mark for who wins in the senate. now, the democrat there has already conceded, but lisa murkowski, the incumbent who has been running as a write-in, she's still holding on as well as joe miller. they've got a long way to go

before they count all of those write-in ballots. and it will be a long time, a couple of weeks before the president sits down with members of congress. that's because he heads overseas today. matt? >> kelly o'donnell on capitol hill this morning, kelly, thanks, as always. karl rove served as senior adviser to president george w. bush and his book, "courage and conscious: my life as a conservative in the fight" is now out on paperback. good to have you back. >> good to be back. >> i know you worked closely with outside republicans in this election. 2004, george bush said you were the architect. were you an architect of this big win for republicans on tuesday? >> well, i don't -- look, others can apply the labels, i just had a lot of fun being involved in american crossroads and crossroads gps and our efforts to help elect more republicans. >> it was a thumping for democrats, no question about it, on tuesday, in the house, in the senate, in some governors' races across the country. i thought it was interesting what you wrote in an op-ed yesterday. let me read some of that.

republicans must not delude themselves. the voters didn't throw out the democrats because they're enraptured with the gop. the polling data suggests that many voters still remain nervous about it. republicans are on probation and whether they get off it depends on whether they do what they said they would do on the campaign trail. what do they need to do? >> they need to attack obamacare everywhere they can. they need to ratchet down the spending and attack the deficit, st extend the tax cuts and have a pro-growth agenda. it's not simply enough to say, we're going to stop doing the bad thing the american people clearly want to have stopped, but they need to lay out an agenda. >> can they attack obamacare without personally attacking obama, or do they go hand in hand? i think people vending a message, they're tired of the visit vitri vitriol. can they accomplish that? >> people talked about the facts and specifics of it, and it was

the president out there saying, we need to punish our enemies and reward our friends. of the negative ads done this year, the vast majority of the republican ads were either devoted exclusively to policy questions or policy and personnel -- personal questions, where has most of the democrat ads were aimed personally at the republicans. >> you talk about the president's indelicate use of the word "enemy," but both sides have been guilty of these things. mitch mcconnell just admitted, he should not have said, our priority number one is to make obama a one-term president. we understand what he meant. but do republicans have to send a different sign, that it's not about president obama, it's about changing course. >> it's about president obama's policies. absolutely, it's about president obama's policies. and look, there's no moral quiflty between what president obama did for months and months and months during this campaign, excoriating the republicans, and the republicans having a very focused attack on his policies. it was president obama who said, oh, we're welcome to have those republicans come along with us, but they ought to be riding in the back. anyone who says there's one

person in america who's keenly aware about a metaphor saying people should be riding in the back, that's this president of the united states. >> let me ask you a question i asked senator-elect rand paul wednesday morning. i said, the relationship between the republican party and the tea party, is it a marriage of convenience? will the honeymoon soon end? or are you guys so s soul mates? >> we'll see. there's the tea party movement, which are groups. there's an even larger tea party sentiment. the tea party sentiment has given rise to the tea party groups. if you take a look at that sentiment, it is broad. it's why 55% of independents voted for republicans, an 11-point shift from two years ago and a nearly 20-point shift from four years ago. it is why we have a lot of people who have not been republicans before who nonetheless came out and -- >> you mentioned those independents. we've learned a lot about them. they don't want to be fenced in. they'll move in either direction and they'll move rapidly. do you think they would move to the right for the foreseeable future, or for 2012, could they

move back to the center or left? >> they could move back, but it would require the republicans to fail at their task and for president to move to the middle. they were not prepared for all the spending, for the failed stimulus bill, for all the additions to the deficit. they were not prepared for obamacare. when the president ran the second most widely shown add, it said, quote, government extreme health care. >> you said christine o'donnell's loss in delaware was a lesson for republicans. what's telephonhe lesson? does she have a future? >> she had a lot of issues that came up in the local press, she handled them one way in the spring and handled them a different way in the fall. in the spring, she said, for example, that she lost her condominium in a foreclosure because of a technical error in the bank. in the fall, she did the right thing by shooting straight with people and said, i lost it because i didn't pay my mortgage. >> does she have a future? >> it's up to her and it's up to the voters of delaware. >> real quickly, at the end

here, your former boss, george. with bush, has been silent for two years since leaving the white house. he's now out with a new book. we're going to be hearing a lot about him and from him over the next couple of days and weeks. you've read his book. what do you think will surprise people most about what he's put in there? and this isn't a plug for us, by the way. >> he's shown a very personal side of his decisions and of how they affected him. and it's a very frank book. it's a very revealing book. people will be surprised how difficult and complicated and nuanced some of these situations were about which he had to make a decision. but they will be struck, i think, by the personal tone of it. >> karl rove, karl, always good to have you here. >> thanks for having me. it's 14 minutes after the hour. once again, here's meredith. >> matt, thank you. as kelly o'donnell mentioned, alaska's still undecided senate race is getting more interesting. incumbent lisa murkowski ran as a write-in and appeared on track to win, but now challenger joe miller is saying, it isn't over yet.

kristen welker has the latest. >> this race is not done until the ballots are counted. >> reporter: tea party candidate joe miller has a message for write-in candidate, lisa murkowski. >> her little victory speech that she gave several days ago may actually be premature. >> reporter: miller's hired a legal team to do battle in the alaska recount where he trails the the write-in ballots by 13,000 votes. >> frankly, i think we're going to pull ahead, at least not ahead in the 13,000 votes, but we're going to pull ahead of where we are now when those absentee ballots get counted. >> reporter: we spoke with the gop hopeful at a coffee shop in wasilla, alaska, the hometown of one of his biggest supporters, sarah palin. >> i'm excited because there are people that have been awakened, you know, obviously by sarah palin. but they've also been awakened just by common sense. >> do you think she would be a good presidential candidate? >> i think she would be. there's no doubt about it. look at who's in office right now. you do a comparison between the two, there is no comparison.

you got one person who wants to grow government, another person who wants to shrink it. to me, it's a no-brainer. >> reporter: and while palin has become a headliner for the tea party, miller is not sure if the movement has completely arrived just yet. >> we'll have to wait and see. really, i think that after these people take office, hopefully me included, depending on the outcome here, the end result will be then seen as to whether or not the gop decides to basically embrace the movement. >> reporter: but right now he's focused on his own future, as alaska waits to see which candidate actually did win this race. kristen welker, nbc news, wasilla, alaska. and now let's get a check of the rest of the morning's top stories. >> we've got ann curry waiting at the news desk. good morning to you. >> good morning, matt and meredith. good morning, everybody. in the wake of this week's election, attention is now turning today to the economy and specifically the nation's unemployment rate. cnbc's melissa francis has more on this, joining us from the new york stock exchange. >> good morning, ann. the unemployment number is front and center as the market tries

mara has details on that. >> though he can barely speak, he knows how to ask for cigarettes. when news of this smoking habit broke, government officials rushed to help. unfortunately he's not that country's only child smoker struggling with addiction. while this may look like home video of child play, it's anything but fun and games. this 2-year-old is in addiction rehab in jakarta, indonesia and if he looks familiar, there's a reason. this spring he became a viral video sensation when clips of him chain smoking hit the web. the jovial toddler started puppingpup i puffing away at only 11 months old. >> the first day he smoked half a pack. >> within five months, he was up

to four packs a day. >> i was confused, how could my child be smoking? he was still a little boy. >> i didn't know how to make him stop. >> reporter: turns out he needed professional help. embarrassed local government officials stepped in, flyi ininm to jakarta, there he wept through five weeks of intensive treatment with the national commission for child protection, tobacco rehab for a 2-year-old. he quit cold turkey and received daily play therapy trading tobacco for toys. >> i'm really happy, i'm so excited. my child behaves like other kids. >> reporter: he's rediscovering his childhood, but for so many other indonesian kids who haven't become internet sensations, theirs is going up in smoke.

the government here estimates 25% of indonesian children over the age of 3 have tried cigarettes and more than 3% are regular smokers. i feel good when i smoke, says this 9-year-old, he started last year when a friend gave him a cigarette. for some, it's a family affair. this 5-year-old kindergartner, his smoking buddy, mom. indonesia is the world's third largest tobacco consumer and kids have no trouble finding a fix. >> we're going to give her money, send her into the store and see if she can buy cigarettes and she will not be smoking or keeping any of them. less than three minutes later, she returned, cigarettes in hand. in many ways, indonesia is a haven for cigarette companies. there are virtually no

restrictions on tobacco advertising whether it's tv or in print. and sometimes it seems like the marketing is almost targeted toward children. and then there's the sponsorships. tobacco companies fund hundreds of events each year, including concerts like the recent one featuring smashing pumpkins and sporting events. the biggest player in indonesia, american company philip morris. >> does the company take responsibility for the problem? >> i don't know how we can, where we can come in is by advocating much stronger regulations. >> reporter: the company has been pushing for new laws for five years. >> we don't want kids to smoke. >> reporter: yet they are, and can't seem to quit if you want to stop, why don't you?

later he says, tomorrow. and even after five weeks of treatment, aldie struggles with kicking the habit. >> he still asks me for cigarettes, he'll say, mom, i want a cigarette. >> reporter: one of indonesia's many small children battling a big addiction. now, matt, these are some of the packs of cigarettes that we found in indonesia and packaging like this would be illegal in the u.s. the indonesian government is doing some things to fight smoking, they called for an expansion of smoke free zones, restriction of cigarette ads. but more than a year later, none of those measures has been implemented. 48 minutes after the hour, still ahead, the man who has put up with howard stern for more than 25 years. we'll talk to bah bah bouie

defeated dino rossi. doctors are hailing what they call a major break through in the fight against lung cancer, the number one cancer killer of men and women in the u.s. >> reporter: for the first time, researchers have clear evidence that a type of screening x ray called a low dose spiral ct scan can actually help reduce the death rate from lung cancer. researchers studied 53,000 smokers 55 to 74 years old. >> we will be able to pick up early cancer. >> reporter: the participants smoked a pack of day for 30 years. some got a spiral ct stan, others got a standard chest x ray, all were followed up to

another five years, there were 10% fewer deaths from lung cancer among those who got the ct scan. nbc the parent company of nbc universal is one of seven companies that manufactures the scanners. doctors say that might influence insurance companies and medicare to change their policies and cover the scan which costs $300 to $400. while doctors say the ct scan is a break through in lung cancer detection, they caution, it's not a license to smoke. federal scientists say that they have found dead and dying corals in the gulf of mexico seven miles from the blown out bp oil well. they also found a brown substance coating the corals, but say that more testing is needed to determine if it is oil from the well. and now here's brian williams, with what's coming up tonight on nbc "nightly news." >> good morning and thanks, they

but she lost leaving many wondering what's next for her. from the republican primary on, many republicans seemed to turn against you, they said you couldn't be elected dogcatcher, they predicted you were going to cost them the senate seat. were you the spoiler that they said you were going to be? >> these were excuses, rather than saying we were wrong, rather than admitting that we should have united. what's interesting is that before the primary, karl rove came to delaware and met with the policy council and said no matter what the outcome, we have got to unite around the winner of the primary, but when it came to for him to do what he was encouraging others to do, he wouldn't do it. they just couldn't stomach it to

say i was wrong. >> you were at the top of the ticket and one delaware gop strategist put it this way, she didn't just crash her own plane, there's collateral damage because of what happened at the top. in other words they're blaming you for the entire loss. >> again that sounds like bruised egos because in the six weeks we had after the primary, when the party did not come out to lend their support, we had to rebuild the establishment. >> why didn't they come out for you? >> again, it's bruised egos. we put the political process back into the hands of the people. the voters of delaware chose me as opposed to the party anointed and for decades it's all about who's been groomed by the party. >> you raised twice as much money than your opponent and you had the backing of the tea party and the big guns, sarah palin and jim demint, why wasn't that

enough? >> in just the six weeks that we had. if we didn't have that network, that machine, mechanism to plug into like other candidates did, we had to spend the time rebuilding that, establishing the grass roots network to get out the vote and also defending the accusation that even my own party was putting out. so it was too heavy of a lift for one entity. to think about, you know, it was the white house t democrat senatorial committee, the democratic national committee and my opponent, you know, the whole democratic establishment came out and if we had -- >> why didn't sarah palin come out for you? she endorsed you but she never came to the state. >> she did what a lot of other republican leadership should have. she did what cornyn and even karl rove should have, in that when the accusations, the mischaracterizations started to fling, she helped to deflect some of that in the media. she said that wasn't right.

>> but she never came to the state to coampaign. >> it's a scheduling issue. >> she went all over this country for candidates. >> and she spoke a lot on my behalf in media, she defended those accusations when it should have been the big boys in the party. >> so you don't feel she was avoiding standing next to you? >> not at all. otherwise she wouldn't have come to my defense so often. but again, what could have happened, you know, this election should have been about the issues important to the delaware voters. instead, they tried to make it personal and the leadership could have helped. that's one of the loads that they could have lifted and governor palin certainly did. >> one of the things you said many years ago, obviously with bill maher on politically incorrect when you said you dabbled in witchcraft and evolution being a myth. you're blaming a lot of other people, but does any of it fall

on you? >> the democrats can't stand on their record because nobody can afford these tax hikes. but a lot of good did come out of my candidacy, for example, the democrats are pushing for these tax hikes saying that it's only on the top 2%. but we helped to raise awareness that it's the small business owners who fall under that top 2% category and many of them in delaware have told me that if their taxes are raised, they'll be forced to close their doors. >> that i am not a witch ad, how did it get through? >> you rely on the experts and this is where the advice of the leadership comes into play, we didn't have that. there are a lot of things that we could have done but i'm very proud of what we did do. >> and what's coming next for you? everybody's wondering, are you running again? you almost hinted at it. >> i don't know if i'll say that again, but in the short-term, there's a lot of destructive

policy coming up in the lame duck session. >> how are you going to stop that? >> we have created a platform and we have been able to get a lot of issues out there, and i would like to do that at least in the short-term. real people with real stories who are genuinely concerned about what's going to happen in january. >> so in two years when the other seat comes up, is it likely we'll see you out there? >> i honestly have no clue. i'm looking at the short-term, we have a lot of opportunities from book deals that i'm exploring, but like i said, for now, i would like to continue to be an advocate for those in delaware, the farmers who have never had a voice in washington, i would like to see what i can do to help bring their issues to the spotlight. >> thank you so much for joining us. we appreciate it. up next, they call him bubba bu -- baba booey.

word out for what the reagan administration stood for. this was 1980, 30 years ago. i had a meeting with newt gingrich, he was dazzling, i had no idea what he was talking about, but i could see that he did. so that was impressive. jack kemp walked by me and says we're aware of what you're doing, keep up the good work, i had no idea what he meant about keep up the good work. eventually i got to meet with about four different staff people that were going to be in the reagan administration. i said i understand you want to cut programs, you want to have smaller government, and that's fine, but just keep in mind the first time somebody, because there's not a safety net kills themselves, it's going to really backfire on you because you have to have a safety net for people who can't protect themselves. i said this to about four groups of people. i went to the elevator with don kendall and he said it's very important that you're saying that because no one is saying that about the safety net for

people. as we were leaving, somebody came over to me, he said i need to ask you this, i really need to know this, what's it like to work with miss piggy, it's a true story. i thought i was going to be ask to join the administration. >> the interesting thing about that is that you said that 30 years ago. >> we want less programs, but you know -- >> sarah palin said something not long ago, she said how is all that hopey changey stuff doing for you? do you think there's still a chance for hope and change? >> i think part of the problem with the reporting is that nobody knows what anybody's talking about. i was watching it last night with my wife. hope, change, i'll fight for you. these are catch phrases. but nobody really knows -- like could you explain the stimulus package? could you explain the health

care plan? in other words, they're like insiders talking at a bar over drinks and you have to speak more plainly. >> i was reading a little bit about your background last night and the easy question to ask you is, you've got extraordinarily strong political views, why not run for public office? >> because i have a -- my iq is in triple figures. i'm not qualified. i don't think anybody is qualified to be president of the united states. maybe three people in my lifetime. i don't want to insult anyone, i thought eisenhower was qualified. which means i'm not qualified. i always felt that whoever was president, there should be somebody in the basement that you would go to who is really, really smart and it was a man years ago named clark clifford and he served a few administrations, and i said itds good to have clark clifford in the basement. and one day i picked up the

paper and he was indicted. you have to go out and ask people for money, i don't like to do that. you would have to travel, you would have to sit in a lot of boring meetings, you would have to want to run for office. >> we ran a segment on our show that's called is civility dead? i. >> i don't want to say what was missing from the dialogue in this election was the discussion of the two wars. people just went talking about it, but people should understand that the war in iraq and afghanistan drained the economy and that's one of the major reasons why we're in this trouble, we have spent a fortune on these two wars. all across america you have brain cancer patients who can't get treatment. i'm part of an organization children's cancer and blood foundation, they cut the children's cancer because of the wars. the shock and awe, we made so many enemies with that.

like with dresden in world war ii, we made so many enemies with that. senator web of virginia said we represent 5% of the world's population, 25% of the world's prison population. he said there's either something wrong with -- we're either the most evil people in the world or there's something wrong with our justice system. i'm telling you there's something wrong with our justice system. >> charles grodin wheith what'sn his mind today. we're going to have much more but first this is "today" on nbc. our real national pastime -- saving money.

that and slide it in there like that. >> now i'm looking at or kids and pumpkins and they don't automatically come to mind as the same -- >> they come in containers like this, and you can slide them out like that. isn't that fun? you can pull them out like this, and then what i do is take them out of -- you can tame them out of the plastic container and place them in or you can use the plastic container which is actually easier, you put them in there. >> you don't want that to show, that's so ghosh. >> isn't that a beauty? >> that's beautiful. >> we have hollowed out the pumpkins and then put the moss around the edge and tied them with some twigs. >> absolutely gorgeous. how long will these last? >> they'll last about three months. the pumpkins won't. i want you to take this home.

>> i will take that home. >> and the way you water them is you just place ice cubes, you just add orchids and put them around the top. >> what's this? >> this is what we have done over here. fake your chandelier, what i have done is i have totally trashed the chandelier out with all things out of the garden. your japanese lanterns, i started with some great vine twigs. you can begin to fill it in with rose hips and japanese lanterns and all kinds of areas. i got gourds and apples and you can use bananas if you want. then here, what we did for the centerpieces is there are five of these, we choose these little pumpkins and put a little bouquet inside of these votives. and look at these two looks, i'm so excited, finally we can get these autumn colored tulips this

a third straight month at 9.6%. hurricane tomas is strengthening this morning as it moves toward haiti where more than 1.3 million people are waiting it out in tents. nbc's mark potter in ord port-au-prince with more on the story. >> reporter: here in the capital port-au-prince, the winds are calm but the rain has been falling steadily since last night. the concern is that the rain can lead to mudslides and flash flood which is why the haitian government yesterday tried to evacuate one of its big tent camps but had some trouble doing so. with the storm approaching, the haitian government had hoped to clear out one of its most vulnerable tent camped, filled with 6,000 people. but when they tried to move them to an abandoned hospital for safety, they met with some resistance.

the confrontation became so heated, some of the aid workers had to leave the camp. >> there have been some security incidents so our registration team had to pull out. >> they're worried about losing their possessions here, and are uncertain about where they'll be taken and whether they can come back here after the storm passes. >> the camp sits at the base of a mountain outside port-au-prince and is especially vulnerable to wind and flooding rains. as the hours passed, u.s. officials worried about the evacuations being delayed and assured the residents they could return here. finally temperatures cooled and the first few hundred residents lined up to be evacuated saying they feared mudslides and flash flooding. they were loaded on to peacekeeping trucks to be taken to shelter. with 1.3 million haitians now

living under tarps and tents, most have nowhere to go. >> spreading that contaminateded water, which is has already killed more than 400 people here. ann? >> mark potter, thank. an engine started faring apart causing pieces to rain down on people below. rolls royce which makes the engine is investigating. the passengers of thursday's flight meantime finally reached their destination of sidney australia this morning. nasa has scrubbed what would have been the 39th and final launch of the shuttle discovery

"today" contributor medical editor of health magazine is here to walk us through the breakthroughs. good morning. so all of these medical break throughs are approved or about to be approved by the fda.

we have got a lot to get to so let's go through them one by one. something that can help you detect alzheimer's disease? >> currently the treatments for alzheimer's disease don't work very well because once you have symptoms of memory loss it's really too late. this can detect alzheimer's about ten years before any memory loss. >> it's a scanning device? >> it's a pet scan for the brain, but it's a new compound that's going to latch on to those plaques for alzheimer's. >> for people who have this in their family? >> it may get to the point where everyone's screened for it. >> melanoma. >> it's one of the cancers that's actually rising in incidence ant it's more deadly. any new treatment for melanoma is very welcome. it helps your own body's immune system fight the cancer.

it's very exciting for late stage melanoma. >> for prostate cancer sufferers, there's a therapeutic cancer vaccine that can help you if you're a survive? >> this is to fight off prostate cancer. it's the second leading cause of death in men for cancer deaths. so this is very important. again, once prostate cancer spreads it's very tough to treat and this is a vaccine where it takes the patient's own cells, puts them back in a boosted way. >> so that's exiting. there's a study that helps with heart disease? >> yes. >> so there's a study that shows that stattens, the cholesterol lowering drugs can actually help people in terms of prevention of heart attacks even if they have normal cholesterol. if they have an increased marker of inflammation that's called high sensitivity crp, they should talk to their doctor about getting one one of these cholesterol lowering medicines.

>> hepatitis c virus. >> right now this is a silent killer because often it doesn't produce any symptoms until it leads to really liver failure. the treatments right now are okay, but they definitely do not work for everyone. it's about a 50% effectiveness rate. there's a new drug that will be added to the conventional therapy and really boost the response to it. >> there's also some new devices when it comes to heart failure. >> heart failure can be really debilitating and often requires many hospitalizations. now there's a device that directly measures pressures in one of the major arteries that lead into the heart. it will allow the doctors to receive that information and taylor their therapy so they don't have to be readmitted every two weeks to the hospital. >> there's now a break through for a weight loss procedure? >> this is really exciting because as we know obesity is a huge problem in this country.

there are bare yack trick surgeries available. through the mouth instruments are placed, they actually create a very small touch in your stomach. so you're going to lose weight. it will eventually become a outpatient procedure. >> there's now a new way to diagnose asthma? >> right, so asthma involves as we know breathing difficulties, resistance in the airways but also inflammation, but until now we didn't have a good way of detecting that information. it will allow your doctor to really tell if you're going to have an asthma attack in the next few days and really taylor your therapy before it happens. >> there's also now an oral treatment for people with multiple sclerosis? >> multiple sclerosis is a very debilitating disease and right now it requires injectable medicines or an iv medication.

the san francisco department that handled parking enforcement is trying to close the budget gap by the end of the year and you would think that would mean one thing, more parking tickets but"examiner" reports officer issued citations than anticipated, since july

some new information from the los angeles court where the judge is expected to hand ut his sentence for former bart police officer johannes mehserle this morning. he shot and killed passenger oscar grant on a bart platform nearly two years ago. just a short time ago the judge told the courtroom he was troubled by some jury finding concerning mehserle's use of a gun. remember, there was special circumstances because of that. family members are making their statements right now. we expect mehserle to also speak for about ten minutes. nbc bay area's jody hernandez is in court and we'll pass the sentence on to you as soon as we hear it. new information concerning nancy pelosi, according to our partners at msnbc, she will try
