homelessness and others. with yesterday's announcement that they are going to jack the tuition up again by 15.5% in a year, they decided to add that on to the list of issues they wanted to bring attention to. you are a sociology professor. this is the fifth year. i'm curious what message or lesson you want them to walk away with. >> i think the lesson is that this is a student-run event. they wanted to bring attention that there was a bailout given to the american corporation. $3 trillion. you hear about the t.a.r.p. bailout and there was a bailout given to the mega witch firms. where is the bailout for the regular people who seem to

happen to the middle and working class that they are called upon to continually give and hit with taxes or in this case fee increases? what are they saying? >> they are outraged and see themselves as piggy banks to the state. when there is a need for increase, they go to them rather than having a broader conversation about how to fund education. in years it's gone up 240%. when i was a student at csu my fees and that's what they were called and they changed to tuition. we have tuition that was outlawed under the master plan as a denial of equity. now we have fees and i could not have been a college professor. my fees were $500 a semester. these students will be $5,000.

>> fall of 2011 which will be a year from now. live here at san jose state, today in the bay. the little tugboats that could. people stranded on a carnival cruise line are closer to dry land. they are expected to to the ship to shore very soon. it lost power early monday when an engineer room fire triggered a shut down. carnival delivered food and supplies to passengers. carnival said the ship will dock and passengers will be let off by noon. a san jose fam family said they feel the pain of losing their teen son a year after being killed. dozens of friends and classmates joined the family for a candlelight vigil at frost elementary school. the sophomore was found dead in his back yard.

presbyterian church. they will connect to a tower on the roof of el camino hospital. parent who is send their church are worried about radiation coming off the tower. the company said the radiation will be very minimal. the tower should be ready by january. >> today is veteran's day and there plenty of events to help you say thank you. >> san jose will hold their parade with an opening ceremony at 11:00 this morning. the parade itself begins at noon and highway 87 and east santa clara streets and then ends at san carlos street. retired marine danny weiss berger will lead the parade. >> there will be a veteran's day celebration that starts at 8:00 a.m. they will be honored on civic drive. >> in the north bay, a salute to the air men and some of them

will be on hand. there will be a special recognition of marin city and sausalito veterans and that starts at manz nitta recreation center at 11:00. there will be community receptions afterwards as well. >> if you can't make it, here are things you can do. make a point to observe a moment of silence for a veteran. if you see a vet, thank him or her for their service and send a letter to the troops. there is a link on the differently defense website, defense.gov. think about donating to a group that helps veterans and troops overseas. the uso, veteran legion or veterans of foreign wars or display an american flag. >> little things count. nbc bay area is teaming up with the city to get into the holiday spirit. walnut creek on ice will start at 5:30. the rink will be open through january 17th and the bay area is

bay. supporters of a barber shot and killed by oakland police will march in his memory. live in oakland with what you will see. >> good morning to you. supporters say they are going to gather here in front of the barbershop where derek jones worked. they will walk from here all the way to the bart station, the site of another high profile police-related shooting. this morning we are learning more about derek jones, the father of one killed monday night by oakland police. friends suggested he was shot in the back, but an independent autopsy suggest she was shot in the front. friends describe a caring man who would not carry a weapon. police described a violent parolee with a criminal record. it started with reports he was assaulting a woman at a nearby

laundromat and he fled on foot. they ordered him to stop and instead saw him reaching if are the waist band that officers thought he might have a weapon there. one thought he saw a metal object. they shot jones, but it turns out he did not actually have a gun or a knife. police also apparently tried to stun him with the tazer, but that didn't work. the civil rights attorney said they contacted him and he's looking into it to see if the officers did anything wrong. supporters plan to gather at 3:00. christie smith today in the bay. >> thank you very much, christie. >> investigators are trying to figure out what caused a power outage that forced a refinery to release flame into the air. a shelter reported that is canceled. health advisories were posted

for port chicago and all of the areas near the plant. smoke poured into the air for several hours after a power outage caused the plant to shut down. the burn off from the six stacks sent hydro carbons into the air. >> they did what they were supposed to do. they released pressure from the system due to sudden power outage when had which we are trying to understand where and how that occurred. >> according to the refinery, the system worked exactly as it was supposed to, but they want to know what caused the power outage. >> this morning, jean quan is declaring victory in the race for mayor, but it appears the challenger is not going down without a fight. he plans to have a news conference at 10:00 to address a watch article about voter confusion in the rank choice voting system. he was considered the front-runner, but the method put in the lead.

good thursday morning. this is a live look from arlington national cemetery where we are of course honoring our nation's veterans on this veteran's day. joe biden will be at the cemetery laying a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier. >> a carnival ship has been stranded at sea and tugboats are beginning to pull it into port. today in the bay's stephanie stanton is in san diego with a look at the latest on a long rescue effort. >> good morning. passengers certainly can't wait to escape the nightmare on the high seas. the ship is outside the harbor

about six or seven miles offshore. take a look at a live picture. you can see what's happening. the ship is being towed by two tugboats. four vessels are going out to meet the 113,000 ton ship. once the sun comes up, they will maneuver the ship into port. it is expected to be here as early easy 7:00 a.m. local time. at that point passengers will begin the process of dis-em bashing. one of the reporters from one affiliate in bakersfield, california was speaking to one of the passengers on the cell phone. she was explaining that each passenger is being given a number and they will be going in groups in an orderly fashion to get off of the ship. as you can imagine, that can't happen soon enough. they lost power when a fire broke out in the engine room. a power with a generator. it has been drifting offshore.

they have been without air conditioning, hot food or telephone service. some of the persons began getting cell service, calling home and talking about the ordeal. mean saying they have been making the best of the situation, getting by on bread and water and food supplied by the navy including spam and pop tarts. these passengers probably cannot get off the ship soon enough. we are here at the harbor and following every step of the way as we hopefully get to speak to the passengers when they get off. that is the latest live in san diego. back to you. >> nothing says nice cruise more than spam and pop tarts. >> yum, yum. >> all you can eat. new this morning, the economy is make headlines. on capitol hill, they are stirring up controversy. world leaders will join the president for the g20 summit.

bob redell is live where students are sleeping for a cause. >> there is about a dozen at the present times and 50 students spending the night in the chilly air out here. they are protesting a couple of things. one as you mentioned, csu announced a 15.5% increase that will go into effect fall of 2011. they were out here, this is an event planned prior to the announcement. they happened to work hand in hand for poverty under the stars to bring attention to the problems. this is the fifth year they have done it. by sleeping outside they want to experience what it will be like for someone who doesn't have a solid roof over their head. there was a tuition hike on top of a 30 plus percent tuition hike. you have been a student here. what has it done for you or against you? >> i worked two jobs now and i

worked with autistic children for most of the week and the weekends i work as a photographer for the studio and i basically work 42 hours and i still have to struggle to pay my bills. >> and keep up with your studies on top of that? >> yeah. the times i study i'm on the bus studying. on the trolley. it seems like i'm always busy and i don't rest. >> what did you take away from tonight's protest? >> just say it's good not to be hungry and cold. i never slept in my life without a roof on top of my head. that is a experience i will always take away. i'm glad i wasn't hungry tonight. >> thanks for speebing with us. i understand your plan is to try to graduate in december. congratulations. >> thank you. >> one of about 50 students and faculty.
