morning to you. welcome to our viewers across the nation inclouding those in the pacific time zone. i'm veronica de la cruz. today we begin with a compromise. president obama took the stage of a summit today. where finding ground on the economic front was no easy task. incomes's kristen dahlgren joins us now from washington with details. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, venk kaw. veronica. many fear the disagreements could spark and international trade war. a couple places where the president did come up short of what he hoped to accomplish there. he didn't reach a trade agreement with south korea. also, the g-20 refused to call on countries to stop undervaluing currency. the president and the u.s. accused china of manipulating its occurrence toy make its exports more attractive. ironically many of the international leaders say that's exactly what the u.s. has done. the president, though, tried to

downplay the disagreements. >> there's a -- an instinct to focus on the disagreements, because otherwise these summits might not be very exciting. it's just a bunch of world leaders sitting around intervening. and so, you know, there's a search for drama. >> reporter: the president insisted that the global economy is back on a path to recovery. he is now in japan for a summit there. he'll be meeting with japanese and australian leaders before he heads back leer to d.c. >> kristen dahlgren, thank you. 4,500 passengers and crew are happy to be back on dry land with reach of hot food, electricity and especially working showers and toilets. nbc's stephanie stanton has more. >> reporter: the site that thousands at sea and thousands more on shore waited for. the carnival "splendor" pulled into port in san diego.

hours later the crippled ship was at the dock and thousands of weary passengers set foot on dry land. the 3,300 passengers spent four daunting days at sea. early monday morning, an engine room fire knocked out power. this amateur video captured some of the harrowing moments. >> absolutely the -- [ inaudible ]. >> reporter: no injuries report but the fire left passengers without electricity, hot water and hot food, and for some, bad memories of what could have been a happy vacation at sea. >> i think the worst part about the whole thing was the food and the smells from the toilets and also from the rotting food. >> reporter: many gave high marks to the ship's crew for hospitality during four days with few comforts. >> the crew was fabulous. they went out of their way. what they had to go through is beyond words. >> reporter: all passenger on the "splendor" will receive a full refund and a free future

cruise, if they want to try again. stephanie stanton, nbc news, san diego. now here's a look at other stories making news early today in america -- an ed elderly ohio woman is recovering after a purse snatch incident. grabbed the purse and drove off dragsing the woman alanguage. the suspect may have been targeting the elderly. a mississippi high school coach face as lawsuit after allegedly whipping his players with what they describe as a heavy leather belt normally used by weight lifters. cell phone video shows one of the reported incidents. the players say they were afraid to report the beatings which they claim have been going on since september. the coach has been suspended 20 days without pay. a massachusetts transit worker is without a job after her violent outburst against a commute perp the commuter claims he received bad directions and

challenging write-in ballots to drag out the heated senate race there. among the disputed ballots are those who say lisa murkowski, republican. quote, lisa. about 80% of write-in ballots have been cleanly counted for murkowski. recent results of a dna test on a strand of hair show a texas man may have been wrongly executed ten years ago by then governor george w. bush for a liquor store murder. hair was the only piece of evidence linking him to the crime scene. the new analysis found it wasn't his. bush's staff failed to tell him. he was requesting a genetic analysis of the hair. the u.s. army has graduated its first sikh man in years after granting a rare exemption for his turban and beard. he was recruited under a special program, speakers of two indian languages. he'll be a combat medic.

hey, good morning. if you're just waking up, this is "early today." in sports -- two of the nfl's best teams went at it in atlanta and as expected, the game went down to the wire. here's nbc's fred roggin with an early look at all your sports headlines. good morning. if this was a possible super bowl preview, we're in for one heck of game in february. falcons and ravens. baltimore down. soaring back. joe flacco's third touchdown of the game put the ravens up 21-20. but not enough. under 30 seconds to play. matt ryan to a wide open white. white took it for the game winning score. falcons won it in a thriller. 26-21, they're now 7-2. now around the nba, rondo may only be 6'1", but he can flat out fly monster dunk. celts up 15 at the half. embarrassing moment for lebron james in the third. air ball to three. pat riley was not impressed.

but ray allen had no problem hitting the long ball. seven from beyond the arc. celts beat the heat for the second time this season 112-107. now to chicago, even though the mascot benny was putting down shots. rose to the rim. bulls up 16. rose had 22. they ran away with it in the second. the rebound, bucket and the bulls blew away the warriors 120-90. elsewhere, the nuggets are no longer unbeaten. denver up, 108-105. a minute layer, carmelo anthony, the fadeaway over derek fisher. the nuggets hand the lakers their first loss of the season. 118-112. finally, crazy moments on a soccer goal in iowa. the goalie made the save, ran up and booted the ball off his teammate. it ricocheted off his teammate over his head and into the net. i don't know what's worse.

holiday shopping, tree up and christmas lights? >> i do my shopping in july. >> figured as much. >> christmas in july now. >> okay, bill. this morning's headlines in entertainment -- it is one of those increasingly rare weekends where there will be a battle at the box office. denzel washington and up and comer chris cline is an action thriller about a run away freight train carrying toxic chemicals. some experts say it will finish on top with up to $25 million. but others expect a big second weekend from last week's champ "megamind." it could finish first with around $30 million. seen as a spoiler without a real shot at number one, the debut of "morning glory." featuring harrison ford, diane keaton, and it will draw older audiences, but only about $15 million worth. also debuting, the alien invasion offering "skyline" expected to draw $15 million.

finally, a second weekend from the rogue comedy "due date" could prove the be the ultimate spoiler for denzel's top of the box office hopes. i've heard that isn't very good. definitely will be going to see "morning glory," i understand you are seeing it with me. >> yeah. the cartoon movies do much better than they think. >> wa-wa-wa. this comes to us from philadelphia, pennsylvania, where in nearby lawrenceville, new jersey, one school permitted an all-out school fight for a good cause, of course. over 1,500 custard pies were hurled into faces as students and faculty participated in a massive pie fight. the sanctioned messy madness helped the school raise more than $10,000 for charity. also set a guinness world record for the biggest custard pie fight. that looks like so much fun.

here is one story to keep in mind the next time you are clearing out your attic. a brother and sister in london discovered a chinese porcelain vase after clearing out the family home. expected to sell at auction for $1.5 million or so, it went for a whooping $69 million. the all-time record for chinese art sold at auction. whew. one unusual school in turkey keeps its students living in the past. it's a gladiator school. well, it's really a show hoping to attract tourists to a town where the ancient swordsmen may
