6:00 on friday morning. >> we want to get you started with rob taking a check of your hour by hour and weekend forecast and it could be a little bit chilly and soggy. >> what's unusual about the hour by hour forecast and we put the maps into motion, numbers not changing a lot. clouds are coming in and raindrops as well. we will stay in the mid- to upper 50s anda as we saw where christie smith is, but right rain is coming in and cold air from the north that will take levels low enough to coat the higher hills around the bay area with snow. maybe small hail and showers with a full look at the changes with the forecast in a few minutes. >> the rain coming down. haven't had them for a while. you are seeing thin outs, mike. >> you are seeing a few. a big note for to you watch out. rob talked about sprinkles through oakland and the rain. that's what the chopper is seeing. they have gone up there to show

us. around 980, you see the sheen on the road. you see the water glistening. wet road there is and the latest report here. southbound 880 around 90. a spinout reported at seventh street, the second or third for the area over the last hour and a half. a little slowing and nothing major to speak of. it's light and a note for you. even though the roads are clear, keep the speeds at a manageable pace. traffic conditions are the most important thing when deciding how fast to go. that's the basic speed law. back to you. >> more police will be in several east bay schools not because the kids are bad, but because the police chief wants to keep them from falling into a life of crime. today in the bay's christie smith is live in oakland with a look at a program that will be getting under way in the east bay. >> reporter: what you are going to see is more police and more volunteers. the police chief thinks that

reaching young people is really the key to cutting the crime rate here in oakland. what he is doing is asking neighbors here in oakland to step up to the plate and volunteer. at least an hour or more a week with a child at a middle school in the new pilot program. he unveiled the plan last night at a meeting saying the city is at a critical point with a shortage of officers and a new mayor. he was brainstorming with the school chief on this. he thinks more officers will make students feel safer coming and going while adult volunteers can make sure they know all the possibilities that are out there for the future and steer them away from crime. oakland cut about 80 officers back in july and since then, the city has seen riots and killings and a spike of robberies. >> the focus was to reduce the murder and homicide rate in the city. y thought we were on target until we had to do the layoffs.

>> the four middle schools involved in the pilot program are madison, west lake, roosevelt and frick middle school in east oakland. the chief is saying if it works out, it may be expanded to all the public schools in oakland starting with all the middle schools. live in oakland, christie smith today in the bay. >> thanks for the update. . new this morning, san francisco police are looking into a crash that killed two people overnight. it happened on ocean avenue after 12:30 this morning. one person died at the scene and another thrown from a sedan and taken topihe hostal and later died. two other people are injury and are expected to be okay. right now it's not known if the driver was drinking or speeding. the intersection was closed for a couple of hours, but it's now back open. >> activists will call on the district attorney to drop all charges against dozens of people

were arrested. they will hold a news conference and rally at 3:00 this afternoon. police arrested 152 people on november 5th after the former bart police officer was sentenced to two years with credd credit for time served. they will be at the district attorney's office in oakland. >> two san jose moms are accused of embezzling money from their own children. wendy hays and jennifer vasquez took $30,000 from a group at the baldwin elementary school club. detectives say both mothers oversaw the money that went into the school club and say the women spent the money at gas stations and items at jcpenney, old navy and rented movies from september 2009 and april of this year. george kiriyama caught up with her at a curves fitness studio and hayes at home. they refused to say anything.

>> i'm at my personal residence. >> vasquez and hayes are charged with grand theft. they are to appear in court to face charges on december 16th. >> the jury is deliberating in the case of a man accused of torturing a tracy teenager. he lived next door to the home where kyle ramirez is being held captive. he testified that waiters burned, cut, and beat him unconscious. ramirez ran to a tracy gym still in shackles looking for help. three other people have agreed to plea deals and will be sentenced december sixth to 30 or more years in prison. >> 6:06 and the man known as spider dan will face the consequences of a recent protest. dan goodwin was arrested on september sixth after climbing on the outside of fran's millennium tower using suction cups. goodwin said he was trying to draw attention to the

vulnerability of skyscrapers to terrorist attacks and raise awareness about cancer. he will be charged with obstructing police among other things. all of the changes are misdemeanors. a former engineer may have to write a $1.5 million check to the city of san francisco. he stole passwords to the main commuter network and wouldn't give them back. that tied up a key network. he was convicted in august and sentenced to four years in prison. now the city is looking for nearly $1.5 million in restitution for the problems they say he caused. >> two teenages accused of setting fire to a san jose school have been scheduled to do this price before, but the hearings are getting postpone and delayed. they cause $10 million of damage and are being charged as adults. >> ferry fares will be going up on the transit system.

the board will make it official after a committee approved the increase. rates will be rising 10% starting next year. the agency had wanted to raise rates by 30% and bowed to passenger pleas. they will add about a half billion to the budget. >> we want to check the commute with mike inouye. >> there is a wet roadway and a wet commute for much of the east bay. we will look at the toll plaza and a live shot. the volume is starting to build, but slower because it's friday. we see the sheen on the roadway and off to the right, we see puddles in the wider shot. off of the 880, you can see the lights reflecting off of the slick roadways achl number of spinouts reported for oakland off of the roadway. the approach with a 19-minute drive. down to the berkeley curve itself. the slow down and this is typical for a friday. it's in antioch, the first to

start any other day as well as friday down to 13 miles per hour at the sensor and slowing now through bay point and pitsburg because slowing there as well. the fog not quite as thick. through livermore, this is a typical pattern. not so bad. a 16-minute drive around the heart of livermore and over towards the livermore airport. things start to build as it will over the next hour. we will send it back to you. >> thanks, mike. >> we want to check the forecast and see how things are right now. coming upon us quickly. >> light rain around the east bay. we have been seeing it from richmond to berkeley and oakland. just enough to wet the ground, but it may slow down in spots around 880 and colder air aloft that will do interesting things to the forecast. rain off and on and a mix of sunshine and as the cold air arrives, thundershowers with

small hail and saturday night into sunday, winds pick up at 15 to 35. midway through the weekend, it will be gusty. look at the snow levels around the bay. by the end of the weekend, north bay could see snow levels as low as 2,000 feet. mike pointed it out and we have fog with light rain and cooler through the day hour by hour. temperatures not changing a lot. mid- to upper 50s and windy and cooler for the weekend. we will see showers following us into monday of next week and drying by tuesday and wednesday. the other components to the hory. let's take you into the sierra where we see snow. this could be an epic weekend. two to three feet could be flying and let's get an expert point of view. we will go live via skype this morning with heavenly ski resort. continues up there will look good and you will be opening up things at heavenly, aren't you? >> expert might be overselling in my roll up, but look at

display kicking off tonight. good morning. how are you doing? last year you adopted the out about 300 animals. you are trying to do 320. how important is it? >> very important. our shelter is full and we have a lot of animals. we are a no kill shelter and we will keep them with us as long as it takes to find a great home, but we need homes for animals. >> do you have a lot of animals or see that -- that one wants to go home with you. do you always have a lot of animals or is this particular time of year or in history is worse than other times? >> especially with cats. there is a kitten season and a time when mother cats have kittens and this is the tail end of that. for some reason this year the cats were prolific. we have a large number of cats looking for homes. >> what are about with regard to the economy. do you see that? there was a way?

full body scanners that can see through your clothes and pat downs that travelers say are invasive and embarrassing. the tsa reacted by releasing a list of their so-called missing facts about the scanners and the pat downs. one myth, all children will get the new more invasive pat downs. the tsa said that's false. children under 12 get modified pat downs. the tsa said they only happen when a passenger sets off a metal detector or opt out of the scan. the scanners they say are not safe. you are exposed to less radiation in the scanner than two minutes on a plane. the flight is pretty long. the scanner images can be saved or transmitted? the tsa say the machines don't have the capability to do either and recording devices are not allowed in the screening rooms. the scanners are in place at sfo and oakland and at san jose's

airports. overall the volume is light and it's a friday and it's rainy and wet. we also have an unrelated issue that just popped up on the sensors here at 280. reports of an accident around wood side. near a park and ride lot. we are checking on the condition of the bicyclists and san mateo sheriff's office and the it's a hit-and-run and the person may have gone to the wrong direction on the on ramp. a lot of complicated stuff going on and the news desk is following as well. i will let you know as i find out more information for the person that was hit on the bicycle as well as the traffic flow. the sheriff as well as chp will be involved in the research. the rest of the peninsula with a lighter volume off of 92 and 92

>> i'm sure it's lovely in the coffeehouse, but out here on the street, it is downright cold and the wind, the flags stopped blowing as i mentioned. gusty winds all morning in downtown truckee. a sign of what is coming. we are starting to get the first morning light. big pillows of white clouds over donner summit. it's snowing on the other side. you can see here in town, the scene enjoy it now. a few hours from now will be different here in truckee. the forecast is calling from to two feet as and as much as four feet on the ski areas. you can see areas just east and north of col fax and blue canyon. snow falling there and we are waiting for the first band to come here through truckee and behind that, colder air and more moisture behind that. it is going to be a chilly blast in truckee.

oakland as a way to keep kids on track and intervene with at risk kids before they turn to a life of crime. he unveiled this program at a crime tracking meeting last night saying the city is really at a critical point with a shortage of police officers. theyed a off about 80 and we have a new mayor. he said the idea came from a discussion he had with the school's chief here in oakland. both think reaching young people early is a key to reducing the crime rate here in the city. police will try to increase their presence around schools to make sure kids feel safe coming and going and volunteers are being asked to spend at least an hour or more a week with a child and lead them know about the possibilities for a bright future. the pilot schools involved here are four middle schools, madison, west lake, roosevelt and frick in east oakland.

it may spread to all schools here in the bay. today is national adoption day. cowers and communities throughout the country including here in the bay area will be dedicating the day to a process of adoption paperwork to increase awareness for the need for adoptive parents and educate would be parents for how it works. it is to celebrate the local family who is opened their lives to children in need. santa clara county is performing adoptions for 50 years and 27 county judges will finalize about 50 more. >> cal bears are out for blood literally. they have the rivals for life blood drive. it's a competition to see who can get the most blood donated. they had their chance on tuesday and today it's cal's turn. it will be held at the pauley ballroom on the uc berkeley

campus. tomorrow it's finally game time. cal will host the game and kickoffs at 12:30 and stanford is the odds on favorite. 9-1 on the season. cal is 5-5. >> the warriors are back in action after a few days off. they will host the new york knicks with the warriors and he is recovering at home after being released from the hospital. he spent the past week there after an unusual injury. he accidentally elbowed wilson chandler in the mouth on november 10th. he was cut on the elbow and that led to an infection t. could be a few more weeks before he is all better. >> the raiders, nice to say for the first place raiders after a week off and take on the steelers in pittsburgh. they are looking to pick up the 40 win in a row. last week kansas city lost and the raiders beat them before the week before.

towards one of the tribes started circulating. that tribe carried out the attack wednesday morning. police arrested three people. no one died in the fight. >> we are worried about our state of mind. a new hospital did one in five adults suffers from mental illness. most people didn't get treatment. today in the bay's tracy pots is live in washington, d.c. with a look at how california and people in the bay area are faring. tracy? >> good morning, everyone. in california, 38% of those surveyed say that they believe they have dealt with a mental health issue at some point in their lives. higher than many other states we looked at. we have new information from the government agency that deals with substance abuse and mental health. they are reporting 45 million americans with mental health issues, 11 million of them serious and a million people attempting suicide with many

more thinking or planning a suicide. they are up slightly from last year and most of the increase they attribute to depression. many of them are people who are unemployed. the jobless, suicide rates and depression rates have doubled among those or are twice as much among those who don't have jobs. it's really a double whammy because many of the people lost their jobs and as a result their insurance when they are experiencing depression, they don't have insurance to do something about it. the other big concern, substance abuse. one out of five who experience mental health issues will also end up with substance abuse issues. >> thanks for the update, tracy. >> i wanted to get you updated on the morning commute. slick out there. accidents and spinouts. what's happening now? >> we are worried about the slick roads and bumpy roads because of the debris. reported around here.

yerba buena and just as i am coming on the set, this might be related to the debris as you are approaching. we have an accident and debris. that's what's causing all the slowing off of the 85 split. another incident reported in the last 10 minutes as well. this is 680 with another accident around that bend. the south bay looking already as far as the typical slow down. it's lighter for a friday, but watch the roads as they get a bit wet as well. coming off of 680 out of sunol, the southbound side starting to go a tad bit, but not a problem out of pleasanton over the hill. what may be an issue will be visibility. you see the low clouds and you can still see the traffic over to fremont. this will change definitely. >> it's interesting that you mention the low clouds. starting things off courtesy of the weather channel. if we could go to the weather maps for air delays and coming

up shortly. the worst weather airports for you. this just out for the weather channel and the holidays ahead, not a big surprise for chicago at the top of the list due to thundershowers. detroit comes in at number two. the city airports at number three. san francisco, sfo number seven on the top 10 worst weather airports. this equals flight deplays and this time of year, the slow clouds in sunol. the low clouds and winds. this time of year right now, can t can make for complicated travel around sfo and we'll see that as we go through the weekend. here's the weekend preview. we will see a chance of thunder and cold air and an unstable atmosphere. a chance of thundershowers and small hail as well. by saturday evening and sunday, this will be the most active part of the storm midway through the weekend. the winds crank up to 35 and gusts higher on the coast and around the hilltops.
