bridge. those are ominous gray skies. will they come down on us like they did yesterday? thanks so much for joining us on this sunday morning. today's meteorologist has the answer to that. i cannot believe it. >> amazing. and last night, too. i got calls this morning saying there was thunder and lightning going and belmont. lightning going through there. >> and hail. >> hail. perhaps it woke you up this morning. look at the radar. the pink you see there, just out to the east of san jose. that is mt. hamilton, of course. look at all the snow falling at mt. hamilton. we also had clouds in the valley. san francisco today, city san bruno, scattered showers. oakland and walnut creek, take you to street level. you can see the rain moving through the city right now. we get a wide perspective. yes, will is a lot of snow in the sierra. 50 and 80. you'll need the chains if headed up there. take your time.

it is coming down heavy. we'll get two to four feet above 7,000 feet. above 8,000 feet, tack on another two feet of fresh snow. all right, your daily planner, only into the 50s today. pockets of showers and thunderstorms. we'll get a few sun breaks. that afternoon heating, chris, as we know, gives us rise in the atmosphere. when that happens, you have the cold, unstable air that come over. pops little lightning and hail. so that's going to fire off again today. maybe not as heavy as yesterday. you're still going to get it today. >> okay. all right. >> good day to watch. thank you very much. >> new this morning, a stanford professor says he visited a north korea nuclear site in north korea. he tells the white house he went to a uranium enrichment site. now "the new york times" reports that he privately shared that information with the white house in just the past few days. enriched uranium can be used to make nuclear weapons. now it's not clear why north korea would give hecker access

to this site and such a facility. we'll find out soon how that shakes out. >> a warning this morning about a rash of armed robberies happening in berkeley but could happen to any of us anywhere. we see how the distraction of a cell phone can make you a victim. >> reporter: in a span of 15 minutes, we saw several people walking down the avenue in berkeley distracted by their electronic devices. but this womman was not one of them. >> a guy put a gun out on me. and the phone wasn't really necessary. not worth my life. >> reporter: since november 11th, armed robbers struck five times in north berkeley, stealing wallets, cash, and electronic devices from people walking down the street. at virginia and walnut streets on november 14th, a woman was hurt after being hit by one of two thieves who took her purse. in that case and the others, a gunman approached someone walking alone and at night in poorly lit neighborhoods.

>> they walk and look at their device while they're walking, sometimes talking on the phone but sometimes actually texting or using their device which keeps them from being able to see around them and also blind them. the light of the screen affects your night vision. >> reporter: this prompted the business association to take that warning from police out to the streets. >> we warn people not to have their iphones on and not be distracted on their phones. there have been robberies. there was one here. and for the most part, they listen. >> this man was not hurt. he said he's glad the only thing he lost was his phone and he wants his experience to be a warning to others. >> please be aware of your surroundings. >> reporter: monti francis, "today in the bay." >> police are still investigating whether all the armed robberies are connected number suspects have been identified. no one has been arrested. also in berkeley, police are searching for clues in a case

investigators are calling alarming. they say a man broke into a home on evelyn avenue early saturday morning and sexually assaulted a girl there. the suspect description is vague. the attacker is described as an hispanic man 20 to 30 years old, 6 feet tall, 190 pounds. police say he has a pronounced nose and speaks with a heavy 5:00 accident. he has short hair and a clean shaven face. it's vague. but if you know anyone that match that's description, police want to talk you to. the investigation continues this morning into an unarmed man shot and killed by oakland police earlier this month. derrick jones was buried yesterday following a funeral at oakland's church of christ where the line of mourners wrapped around the block. police officers killed the 37-year-old father last week near the barbershop that he owned. those officers say they fired only after jones reached for something that looked like a gun in his waist band. that object turned out to be a small electronic scale. his family says they were touched by the turnout for his funeral. >> everyone has come together

and supporting the family, our family. and it's a sad moment at this time but it's also an awakening in how we need to really come together. >> activists say that a pattern of police brutality links jones' killing with that of officer grant who was killed on the bart platform on new year's day 2009 by a bart police officer. decision 2010 now. three weeks after the election and one california race is still too close to call. but it could be getting a little bit closer. political experts say the san francisco pamela harris will likely keep her lead in the race for state attorney general. harris' 43,000 votes ahead of her republican opponent of southern california. even though they're about 500,000 votes left to talley, experts on both sides of the aisle expect harris will ultimately win. thanksgiving is a time to share thanks and have a nice traditional meal with friends and family.

but thousands of folks around the bay area are not able to do that without any help. so they're neighbors, friends and neighbors pitched in to make sure that even the hardest hit among us can enjoy the same holiday tradition. nbc bay area teamed up with safeway and local food banks for a massive food drive yesterday. it was a sunny day. customers bought turkeys and prepacked groceries for $10 to $15 apiece. members of the nbc bay area family rolled up their sleeves. you see tom sinkovitz and the food benefits food banks in our nine bay area counties where the request for help is up 30% in the past few years. >> right here in santa clara and san mateo, we're feeding about a quarter of a million people on a monthly basis. and you don't think anybody should go hungry, no less 250,000 people a month. so the food that is donated and the dollars that are donated through the safeway drive will immediately impact those

this weekend. take a look at all the snow just west of trucky. chains are required except for four wheel drive vehicles. tough times for drivers means good times for skiers. resorts are open for business. interstate 80 was closed for a little while last night. you won't see any snow today. you may see snow white. the annual tree light celebration is coming up. kids can write letters to santa and give hugs to their favorite disney pals. the event is free and open to the public. it is happening rain or shine. i think it's probably rain. >> stanford lays claim to three of the newest rogue scholars. 32 american men and women were chosen. the honor means the scholarships for two to three years of study in oxford in england. they include sam harris,

we're finding the beautiful spots. makes me want to get out there and jog. it's raining so i probably won't. >> yeah. i don't think so. anything to not get out there, yeah. chris, we have some rain. if it's not raining right now, it will be eventually at some point today in your neighborhood. we really got another day where it will be showers, thunderstorms. you're off the hook. next weekend it's going to be raining next weekend again. >> what about thanksgiving? >> we'll get to that. it looks great around the bay area. >> that's good. >> yeah, that will be good. what we're getting, you notice this time of the year you get three days of just wild, cold, windy rainy weather and then three days of nice weather and then you go back and forth. so that will be the cycle for us this week. start off live in san francisco. look at the flag on top of embark dario. and then there is oakland off in the distance. dark clouds ready to produce some rain. there are some sun breaks there.

you can see that will cause some afternoon heating. the heating and the cold unstable air coming up overhead, those two combined, not a good mix. we'll get the thunderstorms going this afternoon. pretty dark. a lot of rain coming through here. next shot as we head off into the south end of the bay, this is looking out towards the santa cruz mountains. look at the center of your screen. and just to the right of it, that's a little bit of white up there. that is snow on the mountain. gorgeous shot. yeah. we can finally make that out. so if you're out in the south bay, look at that. let me show you the radar. you can see mt. hamilton has some snow right now. so this is mt. hamilton. all of the mountains north of there having some snow. so you'll see those once you get the sun breaks. you'll get to look at the snow cover. nothing falling over mt. hamilton. that camera we saw was pointed in downtown san jose. so the snow you saw on the hills is right in through there. so, yeah, we have a couple

scattered showers today. notice the pockets. sometimes they'll get a little heavy. this is through hayward. once you head into newark and union city, you have a couple rain drops. danville, same story. mt. diablo will get snow today. we have san francisco clear in here. it's only 2,571 feet above sea level. it's tough to get snow there. we'll get it at the very, very peak. not a whole lot f you want good snow, you have to head to the south end of the bay. or, of course, sierra. we have two to three feet of fresh snow falling today. give us another two feet at 8,000 feet, we'll have quite a bit of snow. this is the storm right here. circling through. a lot of cold air coming in. and behind it, you've got the pockets of unsettled air. so there are some thunderstorms today. when we get those, you get gusty winds and some small hail. as far as snow levels and across the lake county, we do have some as low as 1500 feet. we talked about the south bay snow and across the sierra.

bring the chains. prepare for any delays. winter storm warning for lake county and also for the sierra. and, yeah, you have plenty of snow there. two to four feet. as soon as we get into the seven-day forecast, yeah, chris, you were talking about nice conditions for thanksgiving. there you go. 60s and sunshine next weekend, more rain. get ready for that. >> okay. thank you. >> president obama is back at the white house this morning, frurnd a trip to portugal late last night. he talked to nato leaders talking about afghanistan. afghan troops should take the lead in fighting the taliban for themselv themselves by 2014. he also took time to weigh in on the controversy surrounding the patdowns and the full body screeners being used by the tsa. protests against the measures are -- swr some folks saying that they're invasive. they are set to start this week. one of the busiest travel weeks of the year. we have more from los angeles. >> reporter: steve dreads the

long lines at los angeles international airport during the holidays and says the new stiffer security measures are adding to his stress. >> it's a silly, ridiculous waste of time. >> reporter: with 1.6 million people expected to fly, 400,000 more than last year, the new measures have people around the country talking. >> i think the entire process is invasive. >> if it keeps us safe, i'm not too worried about it. >> reporter: today, the president weighed in saying increased security is necessary, especially given recent close calls like the so-called underwear bomber who nearly brought down a delta northwest flight last christmas. >> what i've said to the tsa is that you have to constantly refine and measure whether what we're doing is the only way to make sure that passengers on planes are safe. >> march lane mccarthy is all for stiffer safety but said she had a terrible experience at the

airport. >> it is just a surprise. i felt very invaded by it. >> reporter: mccarthy, a cancer survivor says the tsa official stepped over the line with her. >> she took her two hands. she touched the prosthesis. she moved it up and down and left and right. and then she said you're okay. >> reporter: some passengers filed lawsuits. the internet is buzzing with thousands of people venting their frustrations. there's even a site that purports to post the views of tsa workers, many are anonymously saying they don't like the new rules either. one writes, it is not comfortable to come to work knowing full well that my hands will be feeling another man's private parts. but tsa officials say recent polls show about 80% of the traveling public supports the increased security and they are predicting a smooth holiday travel. >> we will be thorough in our screening to make sure that everybody gets on every flight at a high level of confidence and assurance that everybody

else around them has been screened. >> a texas man is calling some people to refuse the full body scanners and patdowns this wednesday. that could create a lot of delays at airport it's that happens. it's one of the busiest travel days of the year. south bay travelers can save money by flying out of sfo instead of san jose international. the mercury news looked at airfares between the two airports. it found that a flight from san jose to seattle is $20 more expensive than the same flight from sfo to seattle. flyers tell us that sometimes they find $100 difference in fares between the two airports. the department of transportation says fares rose 12% in san jose the last five years and fell 8% in san francisco. some airport officials say that's because the hard times hit the industry at the -- at their airport harder than san francisco. it was more difficult for them to recover. still ahead on "today in the bay," a bay area athlete helps

a big time rivalry, the new york giants and the philadelphia eagles are on sunday night football night in america. that game kicks off at 5:20. speaking of big rivalries and big time embarrassments, stanford handed the cal bears the biggest loss in 80 years. now the bears have to win the next game to become eligible for a bowl. yesterday's game had a little drama before it even started. right after the coin toss, both teams met in the middle of the field, stanford's rashaad patterson threw a punch. he was ejected before kickoff. after that, it was all stanford. the cardinal world posted a win. scott had more of the excitement and the disappointment from the stadium. >> reporter: stanford gets the act back. they can't celebrate for too long nor can cal dwell on the loss. both teams have home fifinales weekend. >> we have to pull out all the emotions. you have to let some loose.

good morning to you. take a look at the clouds hanging out above the bay area today. we're going to see bits of rain. craig has a look at your forecast including the important travel dates coming up later this week. a flood in a coal mine trapped 28 workers underground. 13 of them were able to escape. rescue workers are working around the clock and are bringing in pumps to remove the water. china's mines are the deadliest with more than 2600 people killed in coal mine accidents there last year. and also in new deal land,

toxic gases kept crewed away from trapped miners there. an explosion on friday. police say the miners are more than a mile down the main tunnel. fresh air is being pumped down an open airline. rescuers are drilling a hole 500 feet deep into the mine to check out the air quality and to lower listening devices. >> we've been in touch with them. police officers are experienced in rescue and mine disasters. they're working the scene. >> families of the miners attended a church service yesterday. the new zealand rescue efforts are different from the chilean one because the new zealand mine has two exits. the manhunt continues for a man who shot a park ranger in utah. ranger brodie young stopped the man in his vehicle friday night and then was shot in the arm, leg, and the stomach. yesterday more than 100 local, state, and federal authorities

searched for the suspect by boat, helicopter and on foot. they found the suspect's abandoned car, a rifle, backpack and a bloody shirt. the suspect is wounded and on foot and promises it is just a matter of time before they catch him. >> i'm going to catch him. yeah. we know he's still there. and there's not any way out for him. >> the 34-year-old park ranger was airlifted to a colorado hospital on friday night and is now in critical but stable condition. >> it was a rude awakening for a family when a pickup truck plowed through their bedroom wall. police say jake coleman lost control of the vehicle and sped through a field and ran directly into this house in eastern kentucky. amazingly the two people sleeping in that bedroom were able to walk away uninjured. the 19-year-old driver had to be airlifted to the university of kentucky hospital where he was listed in stable condition. so far no charges have been filed against that driver. >> today marks the 30th

. california's want more state budget cuts. most people do. a poll released last week showed that spending cutters outnumber revenue raisers by more than two to one. so how would you reduce budget deficits? that's what the question was. cut spending by 65%. raise taxes, 18% of folks said. do both said 8%. don't know said 8%. total exceeds 100% because of the grounding. today we bring in our political analyst. are you particularly surprised? i mean folks -- even just as an example all of the college students are protesting those, you know, tuition hikes. folks don't want to lose any more of their services. but they don't want taxes, right? >> no. look at polls. more than three to one. three to one in term of cutting

versus raising taxes. so it tells you just how angry the public is at the thought of raising am time are tough, chris. you know it. i know it. we all know it. those who are working, the few who are, feel taxed to death. and we know that manufacture us, they talk about 12.5%. no. when you look at all those out of the workforce, no longer looking, working part time. it's close to 20%. 20% aren't working. and they can't imagine the thought of more taxes. so, no, these are tough times. no question about it. >> you hear a lot of people saying, you know, cut the spending. let's live more efficiently. we're doing it in our household. you know, we're doing it at our companies. and now california lawmakers should do it as well. but when you ask people specifically, okay then, where? >> right. >> that's when it gets interesting. >> yeah. that's right. and the time tells us a lot about that. take a look at how the people feel about the major categories that we think about every day. prisons and transportations

things of that nature, children's health even by a two to one margin. and universities and colleges which as you said have been hit hard as far as people are concerned, they need to cut even more. but you know will is a couple of points, chris that, we want to go into beyond this data here. even if they are painful. it's almost impossible to cut prison spending. $49,000 a year per person. why? because of federal courts oversee california left and right. they're really concerned about the way we have dealt with prisoners. and public education, california already ranks near the bottom. and in public transportation, we're 50th per capita spending. this is the one area where they say let's raise spending, okay? let's get back in there. almost two to one. let's raise spending. but here's the problem. if you raise spending for the largest area of the budget, 43%, cut, cut, cut. somewhere else. >> right. right. interesting. okay. so we like the governor. we tlik blame the lawmakers for the mess that we're in. but we as voters are not without

blame. >> no. >> we want what we want. we want our cake and eat it to. >> this is the dirty little secret. that's all there is to it. nobody likes to face up to. this the fact of the matter is we have passed repeatedly proposition that's mandate the states to spend funds in certain categories such as public education, mental health, three strikes and you're out, the list goes on and on. at the same time, we've also made it harder for the legislature, we shabsolutely ma it difficult. why? you can't raise money under these circumstances or those circumstances. a couple weeks ago when we passed the propositions, we further made it difficult. you put these together and the state is in a fiscal straitjacket. that's all there is to it. we don't want to take any more taxes. we make it harder to spend money. at the same time, save public education. >> okay. so we know we have a budget. it stinks. it's not going to hold water. there are too many holes in it. where do we go from here? >> there is a deficit, right?

the annual thing. halloween, trick or treat, thanks giving and annual deficit. they all come every year. so this time around, the governor is going to say all right, let's have a special session. deal with that $6 billion hole for the rest of the fiscal year. he'll do that on december 6th. you know what? it's just hard to imagine that much if anything is going to come of this. you know, unless we do something really radical to the budget, that's hard to imagine given the public's attitude, only an improved economy is going to generate more revenues. chris, we look at all the data, all the forecasts, seems a long way off. >> i know. you know, we just did that big old food drive for the bay area food banks. and, you know, we asked some of the folks, do you think the recession is over? the economists say, you know, our need is up. we're getting a 30% increase for requests, no, it's not going to get better any time soon. >> you know saying, it's a recession when you're out of

afternoon, that day time heating, you were talking about it earlier going to create a couple thunderstorms out there. >> i didn't put two and two together. >> you think of hot air, it rises. you have cold air coming from above that. those two clash and you have a thunderstorm underneath you. a nice gusty wind. at times some hail. so we'll watch that closely. >> all right. >> exactly. we'll get to that. live right now, san francisco, look at that. >> is it blue or gray? >> well, it depends on the time of day. it's going to be a tie. it will be a draw today. we got some blue and some gray. and look at that. off in the distance, it's -- you got some rain getting ready to come on in to the bay. so the next shot as we head to the east side of the bay, we have blue winning out here. and a couple of rain drops close to the east bay inland valleys. san jose getting a little bit of rain at times. this is looking out toward fremont and off into the distance to the east. a little more cloud cover for the south end of the bay. the one hour radar loop shows you the direction of the storm.

the center of it is parked up to the north. that wraparound moisture coming down ever so slowly down into the south and southeast. so all the little pockets you see there, the little, little pockets, they look like piecemeal that, is the cold unstable air. you get sunshine and that will give us some showers. look at 17 just close to just above it. we have snow on 17. so if you're going over the hill or you expect somebody coming over to the south end of the bay, watch for snow this afternoon. also mt. hamilton, you have snows there. once you get those clear, you get to see the snow in the higher elevations above 2500 feet for the south end of the bay. livermore getting showers. you head over to san francisco, we saw that shot of san francisco. the dark clouds we just saw, it was showing all of the rain just off the coast there. got some in san rafael as well. as we go through the afternoon, if you head to the sierra, bring the chains. you have plenty of snow there. we're expecting two feet across some of the lower lying areas and by lower lying areas, i mean 3,000 feet, 4,000 feet.

that's where you get about a foot of snow or so. once you get to 6,000 feet, you look at two to four feet of snow and then about six feet plus across 8,000 feet. so the winter storm warnings are in place at least through tomorrow. across lake county, 5 to 12 inches of snow. all right, we have a time line here. this is 10:00 a.m. scattered showers. notice it's not widespread and not quite as heavy as yesterday. you know, a couple pockets coming through later this afternoon about 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. as well. by 2:00 in morning, more showers coming through. you may get a little pea sized hail moving over your home f you do, you may wake up before it's time to go to workment wednesday, look at the central part of the state. denver into the plains. and the mid-atlantic states. you have snow and some rain for the southeast. thanks giving day, that stays on the eastern half of the u.s. sunshine over the bay area. by the time we get into sunday, look what happens. if you are traveling back to the bay area, we will have rain

here. and snow across the rockies all the way up into the wasatch and into the northern plains. so expect that on sunday if you're traveling and coming back home. highs to day only into the 50s. seven-day forecast, expect more of the 50s. a couple showers and thunderstorms. and then we are clear for wednesday, thursday, friday and saturday. but sunday, the rain does come back to the bay area. >> all right. now here we have a blue moon. >> a blue moon. that's right. i forgot about. that we should be able to see it as well. we'll have enough breaks in there to see that. >> so we can -- >> a blue moob. >> we looked it up to make sure that we clearly understood what it meant. so according to space.com, there are two definitions. the most well known one is that the second full moon in one month's time. but to night's blue moon is different. it is the first one this month which brings us to the second definition, blue moon is the third full moon that happens in a season that has four. >> right. so fourth blue moon will happen on december 21st. but it's going to happen 15
