in morgan hill where a lot of people were willing to give back. they met in local food banks about 9,000 bags of groceries and 1400 turkeys. safeway is collecting food. you can drop by your local safeway and buy a bag. it will go to local families in need. >> as charitable organizations around the bay are prepared to feed and clothe the homeless, 1 o san francisco institution has launched curbside donations and it needs a special item. st. anthony's is collecting scarves to be handed out to people who arrive for a christmas meal. they collected more than 1,000, but thousands more are needed. st. anthonys has been helping to feed and clothe the needy. >> it's difficult for to you help the homeless. there is another way you can help. give blood. today through wednesday, blood centers and in vision aring up.

in vision will make a monetary donation to provide a homeless person with a bed for the night. they are loerked at 7333 hill view and welch road, both in palo alto. it's also located at 515 south drive in mountain view. a walnut creek father has not seen his children in 13 years and he is taking the search to the internet hoping to find them and send a message. >> i love you and miss you. i want to see you. >> michael smith last saw his children chelsea and zachary in december of 1997. he said his ex-wife abductioned them in a custody battle. she accused him of sexual, verbal and physical abuse, but he was cleared of all allegation. he claims as he was seeking full custody, his ex-wife left with

the kids. chelsea would be 19 and zachary 23. the video had 2100 hits. >> giving final approval to licensing all tobacco retailers. a distributor will stage a rally to protect smokers's rights. outside the mission pipe shop and the alameda happens before superviseors vote on a proposed licensing ordinance tomorrow. the licensing program was spurred by a two-year grant for smoking reduction. san jose leaders could approve a similar law december 14th. >> two taxpayers hope to attain a temporary restraining order to block the sale of 11 state-owned buildings. there will be a hearing at 11:00 this morning in superior court. last week the state public works board decided to retire the bonds on several buildings that paves the way for california to sell them quickly. it would raise an estimated $2.3

student from uc irvine is a scholar. that university's first scholar. >> with cold temperatures upon us, homeless shelters are getting biz e. even without the winder weather, shelters are busier than ever. chris sanchez is live in san jose with how many bay area people are now homeless. chris? >> good morning to you. this already this morning you have been talking about the need for food assistance and we know from the food banks the request for food assistance is up about 30% in san francisco. donations are down. a lot of the folk who is depend on assistance have noplace to live. we talked with one homeless advocate in san jose. they tell us that all of their 88 bes are spoken for and the need is exponentially greater. they service about 27,000 people in transitional and temporary housing and there plenty of

agencies in the same position. in this area, it's over 7,000 people out there per night. they have noplace to go. >> at first christian church, the shelter that was a last safety net for families had to close their doors because of a lack of funding. now all they can offer it is a warm meal on a cold day. the requests for the meals are up by about 20%. if you necessary a position to offer assistance and like to do something for the holidays, you can reach out to any bay area aid and assistance programs and they would be happy to take your help. >> thanks a lot. it's beginning to feel more like christmas. at the san francisco zoo, this morning marks the start of the annual reindeer romp. you can meet santa's reindeer in training today. holly, velvet and peppermint.

high levels of a chemical was found that was found in rocket fuel. it impacted homes and hotels and public restrooms. people are being asked to run their tap several minutes before they turn on the drinking water. >> this morning officials at the vatican say pope benedict xvi's comments with condom use is nothing revolutionary. for some people like male prostitutes, using them could be a first step in assuming moral responsibility in the intention of reducing the risk of infection. the vatican's ban on contraception remains. pope benedict xvi chose to make an statement in an interview with a german journalist. a new study finds a link between hormone therapy and dementia. researchers found women who began therapy late in life at 65 or older had a 48% increased risk of dementia compared to women never on hormone therapy. taking the therapy early seems

santa's watching. 5:17 right now. don't mess with the main elf. it happens earlier and earlier every year, stores launching christmas and tauning with decorations and big sales enough to draw you in. consumer advocates are beginning to complain it's the greedy rush to cash in on christmas and thanksgiving hasn't even started yet. some say it means thanksgiving gets overlooked. >> you should not be slave any longer to the retailers shopping schedule. i think you should own yore own thanksgiving. >> own your own thanksgiving. at nordstrom no sign of holiday cheer just yet. they wait until the day after thanksgiving to debut christmas decorations. >> good for them. gadgets are always a favorite gift in the holiday season, especially cameras. digital photography changed things a lot. when you go shopping for a

camera, here are things should you watch for. do not focus on pixel size. instead make zoom cape ability your top priority. >> you want something with optical zoom rather than digital zoom. look for that on the lens. that means it will get in close to the photo. >> another consideration is start up time. point and shoot loaded up with features are sometimes slow to fire up. >> you don't want to delay when trying to get that shot. with triplets they are. let's check in with mike for a look at the morning commute. how are we starting off. >> despite wet roadways, the wind farm and it is windmills might be generating more this morning. the roadway is generating about the normal amount of traffic. 15 minute drive in the westbound commute out of the pass in livermore. that's the first sign of the commute time starting to build and no major slowing here. walnut creek and highway 24, the

welcome back. this is around truckee and interstate 80. you need the snow chains this morning. snow continues to fly there. as you saw this weekend, it's unusual to get snow level this is low this early in the season. close to 3,000 feet. as skies clear, look for the

white capped peaks around the bay area. it's chilly outside. 40s and 50s right now and a few widely scattered showers, but today cool sunshine for the most part tomorrow morning. another chance of seeing rain dropping in. a bit breezy and weather headlines for you this morning with a chilly start. we will see a few showers. today's forecast will look a lot like yesterday. mostly sunny and showers rowing on through. tomorrow morning with more rain with the system dropping out of canada. that will bring a case of air conditioning our way. temperatures dropping off around the bay area. you are heading to the high country and snow this morning. the showers have started to back off and a few here along the coast. that will be the trend. most of the showers will be along the shoreline. the next batch of rain will drop in from the north as we head into tomorrow. mainly tonight into the first half of tuesday. another chance of rain and this

will probably do it for the rest of this short workweek. a rainy start followed up by clearing for tuesday afternoon. this will set the stage for very chilly temperatures. clear dry air right out of canada and up into the bay area for wednesday morning. if the winds back off enough wednesday, we could see 20s. thursday morning there is upper 20s and 30s around the valleys. another cool afternoon. sunshine and a few widely scattered showers. highs in the 50s just like we saw yesterday. late today increasing clouds and another chance of rain into tuesday. the real headline as the numbers right there, you will see on the bottom of the screen, patchy frost and icy conditions on wednesday morning and the next chance of rain will arrive midway through the weekend. >> the popular snuggy is offering a new spark in bedrooms. it's a trend called snuggie

the need for food assistance is up by 30% and could be worse nationwide. >> are your hour by hour forecast and time saver traffic on today in the bi. good monday morning and thanks for joining us. >> i'm laura garcia cannon. let's get started with a look at the forecast. should we bundle up? >> keep the umbrella on stand by for a few times. may see a few showers and the main headline with the cool temperatures and mixed in with sunshine. highs in the mid 50s around the bay and few scattered showers possible for this morning along the coast. the real headline mid-week is 20s and 30s for lows.

it's possible around the bay area. we will show you why in a few minutes. >> 5:30 and police are searching for the person who opened fire on a group of people in an oakland neighborhood. it happened just after 8:30 on east 28th street. the victims drove themselves to the hospital, but one person died on the way. as of last report, two others were in critical condition. a manhunt for a man suspected of sexually assaulting a girl in a home invasion at berkeley. omar sosa drives through an unlocked window in north berkeley after 6:00. they say he raped a girl who was sleeping in her room. detectives believe that sosa has left the bay area and could be headed for mexico. he is said to have a heavy spanish accent and a prominent

nose. >> investigators have not said how old the girl is, but was take tone highland hospital where she was treat and released. police believe that sosa is driving a gray 1997 ford ranger pick up with a double cab and a white camper shell. if you have information, call crimestoppers at 1-800-222-tips. police say sosa may have injuries to his hands and fingers. >> this weekend nbc bay area and safeway partner up for a food drive to help families put a holiday meal on the table. chris sanchez is live with how much we collected and how much more bay area food banks need. >> i was at the willow glen safeway and you were at the morgan hill safeway and it was nice to connect with folk who is were feeling the pressure. just the desire to help folks who are less fortunate. we selected about 1400 turkeys at 9,000 bags of groceries for

the holiday. while we are certainly proud of that, it's a drop in the bucket in terms of the need. a 30% increase in the request for assistance. not surprising certaining the assistance that one in six americans is at risk of hunger. the new report shows that 50 million americans don't know where their next meal will come from. they call it being food insecure. 17 million of those are children. always more difficult when school is out because many children get free or reduced meals at school. though economists say the recession is over, i talked with the folks at the food bank and won't consider this over until the lines dwindle and they don't think it will be happening any time soon. "for assistance up 30% over last year at the san francisco food bank. here at the food bank that services santa clara and san

mateo counties. they are reporting an increase over two years and an 8% drop in donations. perhaps folks think the recession is over and they feel more positively, but the most vulnerable needing assistance. you have time to donate. many of the local aid facilities offer that option online. you can do it with a couple of clicks of a mouse. it is tax deductible. today in the bay. >> good to remember. >> thank you very much. >> bay area charities are seeing a drop in contribution this is holiday, but the need is becoming greater. charities say the demand for food before thanksgiving is usually a good indicator of what the rest of the season will look like. second harvest food bank is the largest food bank and they only collected $1.4 million and have been shooting for 11 million in fund-raising this year. charities say after the economy went bust, people are a little too scared for their own welfare to give the way they used to.

>> the work of one of the bay area's most well-known humanitarians continues. the mother wright foundation is holding their foundation on market street near 31st. they're giving chickens instead of turkeys because they are too expensive. mother wright died in may of 2009 and we have file video of her. she spent decades feeding the homeless and hungry. her daughter picked up her mother to continue her vision. >> the highway patrol will team up with students to package food donations for the food bank of ront ra costa and solana county. they are teaming up to prep the goods at 9:00 this morning at the high school in vallejo. >> thanksgiving three days away, the homeless are trying to figure out where they will sleep and eat. the faces of the homeless are changing.

system and they caught a gust or two. >> the mid-span in the bay bridge and breezy outside. use caution across the bridge as you can see, a chilly start. 45 degrees and isolated showers along the coast. 49 in san francisco and into oakland. and southwest wind at 9 miles per hour. if you are heading to the sierra, the snow is flying there and not so much happening. a few scattered showers heading towards santa cruz in the next half hour. a few showers dropping in along highway 101 around healdsberg. just like we had sunday. widely scattered mixed with cool sunshine and a canadian cold front that will drop down tonight into tuesday. that will bring chilly rain and really bottom out. morning temperatures towards the middle of the week. we should see highs in the mid 50s and sunshine mixed with a few widely scattered showers and

forced to undergo this new pat down. it would possibly cause a lot of people to miss their flights. the government is saying don't do it. it's not a good idea. clearly people are upset about the new aggressive pat down procedures. the new head of tsa said this is for your security. they are trying to balance privacy and security, but bottom line in order to make sure that people don't hide bombs in their underwear which is what we saw last christmas less than a year ago, they have to be a lot more aggressive about how they search people who refuse to go through the full body scanners that are at many airports around the country. at first he said the procedures would not be changing and hours later and again this morning on the "today" show, he said as situations evolve, s evolve and we get intelligence, we will take a look at that. we want to be sensitive to

denies wrong-doing and the money swap was legal. the jury is expected to get the case later this week. sad news out of new zealand. 29 miners trapped underground since friday may not have survived. unstable conditions are preventing crews from trying to find them. there has been no contact and experts are preparing a military robot to get in the mine and take pictures. . >> it's 5:46 and a little bit of slowing. just a tad bit north of the 680 interchange. the speed sensor happens to be at the speed limit right at the interchange. keep this in mind. this shows the early slow down which we see at 87. that starts to show a slow down and this southbound 17 should start to clear.

the lower bayshore no problem as far as 280 goes. 101 with a nice speed as well. it's about 7:00 or 7:30 when the volume increases. you can beat the back up as you go along the peninsula and the dumbarton and san mateo bridge. a nice easy drive. either direction from the peninsula to hayward and vice-versa, in the commute direction for a nice easy drive. at hayward at the mountain, no major wind. >> the roadway looks dry. to the south along the coast, scattered showers offshore and a few more through helds berg and santa rosa. a few of these pop up showers in the afternoon as we see temperatures today only in the 50s. a next chance of rain will come in later and this is what we call a cold front from north to south. the rain is moving through your tuesday morning commute. after we get through the system, chilly temperatures ahead for the mornings.
