announcement. just minutes ago buckingham ballas announced the details for the wedding of prince william and kate middleton. the couple's wedding will take place on friday, april 29th of next year, held in london's westminster abbey, the most famous church, first built around the year 1050 by ing edward the confessor. all wedding costs aside from security paid for by the royal family and the middletons. kate and william are said to be in the process of drawing of you a guest list between a mixture of heads of state and family and friends. the funeral of william's mother diana was held there. charles and diana married in saint paul because it provided more seating than westminster abbey, watched by more than an audience of 3 billion viewers. william and kate will likely

play to a bigger audience in kate's version of the fairy tale wedding. and the president of south korea is vowing a firm response ar north korea fired dozens of rounds of artillery on to south korea's yong pa wyoeonpyeong is. eruptions in flames and residents rush teed evacuate. plumes of smoke rose above the island, home to over 3,000 people. two south korean marine was killed and at least 17 soldiers and 3 civilians have been hurt. according to south korean media, the incident prompted south korea to scramble they're fighter jets. without elaborating, the north later claimed that the south began firing first. the white house ish issued a statement strongly condemning the attacks urging the north to halt mts "belligerent action."

and here at home, packing suitcases for this week's traffic rush. security officials are largely sticking by controversial airport screening methods. nbc's steve handelsman reports. >> reporter: with the peak travel day looming wednesday, tsa said it will pick fewer passengers for pat-downs, hoping traveler dos not protest. by refusing body scans and demanding time-consuming physical inspections. >> let's not tie up those peep who just want to go home and spend time with loved ones. >> reporter: many travelers are angry. this was atlanta. >> i don't believe tsa has ever found a terrorist. >> reporter: tom sawyer says his agent wouldn't listen. >> totally ignored my three requests to tell him my medical conditions. >> reporter: so tom says the agent pressed too hard on a bag tom wears to collect his urine and the bag leaked. >> so embarrassing and so humiliating. i wasn't prepared. >> reporter: tsa says the public is getting a distorted view,

that most fliers are getting pat-downs when in fact it's 1 in every 100 and janet napolitano today, homeland security secretary, is not backing down. tsa might refine its body scans and to a few less pat-downs but it won't drop them. >> we've got to make sure that we are doing what we can and should to adequately screen passengers. >> reporter: napolitano notes, it was just last year's busy holiday season when the accused underwear bomber got on a plane way bomb on his body. i'm steve handelsman, nbc news, washington. now here's a look at other stories making news early today in america -- a rare late november tornado ripped through northern illinois yesterday. amateur video shows the fast-moving funnel sweeping through the area knocking down power lines and causing major infrastructural damage. more than 42,000 homes lost power. also, five kids in a bus were injured during that storm

fantastic. an unbelievable storm. radar map out west never does these storms justice, because the radar beams can't go through the mountains. it ruins the view of the radar. in general, just a big storm producing a lot of wind. very cold temperatures. the weather out west right now, it feels like we're more like, i'd say, january or february. this storm that's coming down, cold blasts of air down through washington, oregon, and once this cold front goes through california, those temperature, going to plunge. already very heavy snow up near interstate 80 especially around tahoe. winter watches and warnings and blizzard warnings in the mountains of colorado. almost off of utah, southern portions of idaho. spokane a blizzard warning in effect and everywhere in the pink, winter storm warnings. everybody with a higher elevation dealing with a good sized storm. highest in the mountains of utah and especially the central portions of california. notice interstate 80 here coming up on sacramento, heavy snow around truckee now and squaw

good morning, and welcome back to "early today." i'm lynn berry. here are some of your top headlines this morning. a day of mourning in cambodia following a celebration that turned into utter panic on a narrow bridge in that country's capital. at least 378 people killed and several hundred nor injured in what's being called the world's worst stampede in the past 20 years. authorities are trying to determine what exactly triggered the deadly rush. this morning's "new york times" reports a man claiming to be a senior taliban commander in secret peace talks with the afghan government was, in fact, an impostor. just last month, both american and afghan officials held high hopes for the negotiations, but this latest revelation sets back efforts to find a political resolution to the nine-year war.

according to the "wall street journal," iran's parliament recently plans to impeach president mahmoud ahmadinejad but held back on the country's supreme leader. media reported lawmakers collect add motion to collect the 74 signatures needed to open a debate about impeachment. and joe miller in alaska is challenging the apparent victory of lisa murkowski. in a lawsuit miller claims election officials violated state law by interpreting write-in ballots as votes for murkowski, despite spelling and handwriting mistakes. this comes after a federal judge ordered a stay on the election certification ruling miller raised serious constitutional questions that should be handled by the state. and now here's an early look at how wall street kicks af the day. the dow opens at 11,178 after falling 28 points yesterday. the s&p shed 1 point. nasdaq gained 13. taking a look at overseas

trading this morning, in tokyo, the nikkei rose 92 points. hong kong, the hang seng tumbled 627. worries swept across the street yesterday over what could be the nation's largest ever case of insider trading. bank stocks suffered after the fbi raided the offices of three large hedge funds. dragging shares of goldman sachs and bank of america down 3%. a broad federal probe into widespread alleged misconduct could take down an unprecedented portion of the $1.7 trillion hedge fund industry. and ireland's government, tapping down on a crushing debt. u.s. listed shares of bank of ireland tumbled 17%. tech stocks led the nasdaq to modest gains thanks in part to an upgrade for chipmaker sandisk. and netflix shared jumped over a new subscription offering unlimited streaming video for $8 a month.

good morning. if you're just waking up, this is "early today." and in sports when a team proves to be a huge disappointment, like this season's minnesota vikings, it is usually the coach who is first to go. here's nbc's fred roggin with an early look at all your sports headlines. good morning. i don't think anybody can argue it has been a season of mistakes for the vikings. from brett favre to randy moss, nothing has gone right in minnesota and now their head coach is taking the fall. brad childress fired yesterday amid turmoil. once a super bowl contender, the vikings are 3-7. leslie frazier will serve as interim head coach. from being fired to a guy who was on fire, the chargers's philip rivers had his way with the broncos. here we go to the third and it's rivers. watch him go. 57 yards for the score. chargers started the season

well, picking a baby name is never easy, so an australian zoo got some help. they asked people to vote online and the winning name for the 3-month-old panda was happy tiger. he is europe's first baby panda in 30 years and receive a lot of attention. 25,000 people weighed in on the name. which beat out the second choice, vienna's joy. paris is giving a green light for the holiday season. the city of love has officially kicked off the start of the season by turning on its holiday decorations. twinkling streetlights stretched along the center of the city giving it a snowing effect. while the city is shining in white, it's also green. this year's decorations are notably energy efficient. one story in denmark will
