the u.s. is condemning attacks on south korea. the latest details are coming up. >> getting through airport security could be chaotic tomorrow. we will see how sfo plans to handle things. a bay area county will vote on a smoking ban. see what could change. a look at the bay bridge. it is 6:00 straight up on nbc in the bay. >> are good tuesday morning. >> we begin with jennifer hill in for rob with a look at the hour by hour forecast. things will be changing. >> this morning we are dealing with rain at the higher elevations and it's all about snow. then we will be dealing with colder air in tonight because this low is dragging with it a cold front.

rain ends and clearing and cool tonight with freeze warnings. we will take a look at the thanksgiving forecast. a little chilly. >>ar a new accident and slick roadways. a number of spinouts reported. we have southbound 101 at broadway. we are closed in the two slow lanes and chp is doing that because fire crews are arriving to provide assistance. a light volume keeps things moving smoothly along the peninsula and a sigalert continues for westbound 80. we have two lanes blocked and a fire department is clearing debris as well as waiting for special to trucks. one car needs a special to truck. slowing for hercules down to the scene down towards the bay bridge toll plaza. back to the desk.

>> be careful out there. developing news overnight. two south korean marines are dead, they died after they shelled an island. >> scott is in the newsroom. he is following the details and a lost tension. everybody is on edge. >> america has an interest. 28,000 troops in south corae. the white house demanding north korea stand down. two dead and 30 hurt after the north shelled a small island in the yellow sea. this is the same area where in march they torpedos a war ship, killing at least 40. now north korea and south korea exchanged gunfire regularly, but it makes the world sense. north korea has nuclear weapons. even with conventional weapons, the capital of seoul is well within artillery range of north korea. >> we will be checking in with you. the tsa is making small changes to airport security.

it released a public service announcement with advice for travelers. they say only 3% of passengers will get pat downs. the number of people picked at random for those pat downs will also be reduced. screeners have been told to be more sensitive when performing the pat downs. sfo does not use tsa agents, but private security instead. >> all of the rules still apply. we are joined by the spoke person for san francisco international airport. >> my pleasure. good morning. >> a lot of talk about people asking for pat downs with the big back up for security screenings during thanksgiving. it's so busy. that is that making any plans to deal with it? >> we are working with the tsa to make sure that everything goes smoothly tomorrow. people want to get through security and on to their gates. we will have over 100,000 people traveling in and out of the

gate. we don't think we will have an issue with anyone who wants to protest. >> we heard the tsa making these public service announcements that they will make these subtle changes to make the process less painful for people. since you guys use the private company, are they going to do the same? will they follow suit? >> they have to. the screeners are under contract to the tsa nationally and follow all the same procedures and policies and protocols like the regular screener. >> do you have suggestions for travelers like what kind of clothing might help the process? >> dress in layers and carry as little as possible. if you want to pack the keys so you don't have to worry about setting off the metal detector, all these things will ease you. >> as you mentioned, so many travelers that you see coming in this year, i want to do whatever you can to help the process.

in this case there folks who want to slow it down. are you guys geared up and ready to handle whatever comes your way? >> do you have separate people dealing with the people who try to slow it down? >> i can't comment on that right now. that's a tsa issue. as i said before, the airport's number one goal is to make sure the people who want to get through, get through security. >> do you have extra security? >> we are fully staff and ready to go for the holiday. >> thank you for joining us live from san francisco international airport. >> my pleasure. >> one airline is looking into refunding anyone scared off by airport security. delta said they are hanning out refunds on a case by case basis

to customers who cancel flights because of security. other airlines will only refund persons money if they buy a refundable ticket. >> new tobacco laws could go forward late or today. supervisors are expected to approve the most restrictive ordinances in the country. the new rules are needed because of growing evidence of dangers of nonsmokers from secondhand smoke. the law would impact parts of unincorporated santa clara and prohibit smoking in all apartments, condos and town houses. smoking would be banned in all county parks and at the county fairground and outdoor seating areas for restaurants and bars. hotels and motels could be smoke-free. >> the supervisors are expected to reject gavin newsom's veto later today of a ban on fast fool meals that include toys for kids. they passed a ban with the toys

unless they meet certain nutritional standards. the mayor vetoed the ban, but they can vote to override the veto. it's a tool to combat childhood obesity. >> two deaths in a few months. another student death this morning. 16-year-old cheerleader jordan michelle west died in a car accident on highway 101 early sunday morning. the chp said west and four other teens in the car had been drinking. west's death happened 12 months after michael russell was stabbed to death in his family back yard. the suspects are fellow classmates. one south bay psychologist said death can be a painful lesson about for most teens. >> it's important to have a sense of vulnerability. one situation that makes people grow up a little faster than they feel comfortable with. >> cheerleaders will honor and

celebrate her at the first home basketball game in january. the 17-year-old driver is expected to face dui manslaughter charges. >> time for a look at the morning commute and how slick the roadways can be. i have to take it easy. >> definitely. despite the lighter volume, lower the speeds because of the conditions. southbound 101, two lanes are block and they reopened. chp is on the scene. 101 at brought way and the slow lane is closed. 101 is not really a problem. 280 northbound and an earlier disabled vehicle cleared from the lanes out of daley city and debris on the great highway southbound side is closed as is the tradition. any time a storm comes through, sand and debris between slow and lincoln. they know the sunset is a good alternate. here no alternate needed. it is a slow drive heading out of hercules all the way down.

we see snow falling and on i-80, we have a closure for eastbound traffic around applegate. people are spinning out because of all that snow. >> about to rain in santa rosa. expect internittent rain showers. going through oakland and danville, we see the heaviest band of rain. over towards livermore and expect a bit of rain for the next 15 minutes. we will get a break with more rain coming through. more rain towards san jose and we will see that along 101 and 680 along 280. the forecast for 12:00 around noon, temperatures in the 50 skptz 40s. rain showers coming to an end and peeks of sunshine. we are still only in the 50s. no sign of the 60s and thanks to the cold front coming through and behind that, colder air.

looking at the seven-day forecast, there it is. highs staying in the 50s. it will be cold tonight and tomorrow as well. >> as you mentioned, the bay area facing the first freeze of the season. it's a great time to remind you how to protect your home. they can cause pipes to crack. if they're underground or within the home, they should be fine. exposed pipes outside are at risk. wrap them with rags or old t-shirts and make sure it's tight. drain hoses of water and even disconnect them from the spiggot and hurricane on the heat. swing small plant indoors or wrap them with a blanket. for sit krus, string up christmas lights. that little warmth makes a difference. >> president obama said the billions in bailouts have worked. he will highlight how the economy has picked up.

arrest people who have a small amount on them. >> 6:16. if you caught the buzz about electric car, you might be curious to try one out. it's nice. >> definitely car rental agencies say when the nissan leap comes out, they will have it. hertz and enterprise saying they will offer the car as well as an electric car called the koda. the epa this morning has a mileage estimate. they say it's equivalent to 99 miles per gallon. if you compare the electricity and the energy in it with gas, you end up with 99 mpg. the total range of the car, the leaf is 73 miles. san jose to san francisco and not all the way back to san jose. the "wall street journal" report that is a drug made in foster city may help the spread of hiv. it is used to treat hiv, but healthy people who take the pill

>> rob chose a good day this morning. rain to talk about and snow at the upper elevations. it's not going to be a warm day at all. here's the highs for today only making it into the 50s and some cases the 40s. it will get cold. freeze warning in effect for tonight and then we are looking at a freeze watch for tomorrow. a look at the seven-day forecast and it's not a warm one at all. >> turn on the heater too. let's check in with mike. >> as jen was talking about, slick roadways because of the rain and of course watch the overnight freezing conditions for the north bay. here we are looking at a recovering situation. the sigalert canceled here and are now making their way towards the bay bridge. that will double your travel time and for the next 20 minutes to a half hour, an impact on the drive, the metering lights have been going back.

they panic and fell over the side into a river. they say it began to sway and that's when the panic happened. people tried to pull the victims out, but they couldn't even get them out. they are literally stuck in there. cambodia's is saying this is the country's worst tragedy in almost 40 years. >> a reminder to lock your doors and windows. berkeley police are search for example a man who is headed towards the mexican border after raping a young girl in her bedroom. chris sanchez is live in berkeley where the girlfriend of the suspect is speaking out. >> everybody is shocked he could be capable of this because he has a young daughter of his own. he is on the run and police believe on his way to mexico the

victim in this case helped police to identify him, but if she was brave his girlfriend would say the opposite of the suspect who is a father of her 2-year-old daughter. >> that is the mother of his 2-year-old daughter who urges him to do the right thing and said rewent with your heart and remember your daughter. they believe he fled the bay area and may be headed south to mexico. he could be driving a 1997 ford ranger gray pick up with a white camper shell. at the same time police are praising the young victim for having the wherewithal to remember what he look like and be able to help them identify him. they say they are also hoping to work with southern california law enforcement to make sure they can bring omara to justice. today in the bay. >> let's hope they catch him. >> a joint safety patrol between

uc berkeley and city police is making a difference on reducing crime and violence. leaders say three months after the program rolled out, emergency calls south of the uc berkeley campus were reduced by nearly 2/3. the joint patrol is made up of two uc berkeley police and city officers. they patrol streets from 10:00 at night to 2:00 in the morning thursday through saturday and before and after all home football games. a man is stranded for days on the delta because he failed to use a key piece of equipment. we have the photos after the coast guard found him on a tiny island in the bay. his raft began to leak and he spend days before finally deciding to use his cell phone. when he called for help, the coast guard used the set signal to pinpoint him. he said he didn't call 911 because he didn't want to spend taxpayer money.

he survived eating vitamins and flowers. >> the city will be serving up thanksgiving dinner. people in need and the homeless are invited to the downtown marriott on broadway for the annual meal. it will be from 11:00 this morning until 2:00 in the afternoon. volunteers expect to feed some 2500 people. donations are still being accepted to the city of oakland hunger program. meanwhile the 49ers are trying to help the hungry in san jose. they will be at the window at st. joseph the worker. the team staff and family will help them celebrate this week. the players are expected to arrive at about 11:30 this morning. time now is 6:36. if you are hosting thanksgiving dinner or you are the that is asked to bring the wine, we will help you choose. >> a good argument could be on the menu for a lot of families. why things can get testy around the turkey coming up in a live report. >> it's all about a rainy

50s and 40s. we look at the rain falling this morning and then we see clearing this afternoon and then tonight it gets cold. there is a freeze warning and a freeze watch in effect for tomorrow night. we are looking at snow falling this morning at the upper elevations that has caused closures on i-80. if you are heading up towards tahoe, wait a while. we are wait figure are that to open thanks to spinouts scattered in nature. 4:00 highs, that is in t. 50s and 40s for the forecast highs. then tonight the cold air moves on in. take a look at the forecast lows around freezing and then colder than that for thanksgiving morning. forecast highs in the 50s. sorry to bring in the cold air. >> there will be enough hot air in the house. >> hot air in the studio. here's mike.

>> here i am. welcome to the morning. don't be encouraged. the reds and yell owes not temperatures. this is traffic flow. don't be discouraged because it continues to improve. all lanes have cleared. we had an earlier sigalert with a couple of lane blocked. we are adding about 15 to 20 minutes after of the bridge spreading down the freeway heading towards the bibraj. the lights have been turned on because of the volume of traffic. all lanes filled here, but closer to the 880, we don't have the full stop we typically see. a slower build for tuesday. it's a vacation week and there is a lighter volume. 880 gives you a look at the traffic flow. nimitz freeway not showing an impact for accidents or issues. that's great news, but the rain as the water kicks up here. livermore is a slower drive. remember as jen said we are

>> good morning. a live look outside. the roadways could be slick this morning. we had a lot of rain overnight. be careful and leave extra time to your morning commute. we will check traffic and see where there is back ups with mike. >> things may get heated around the dinner table. a new poll shows a whopping 65% of people expect family disagreements. tracie potts is live this morning in washington, d.c. with some of the top thanksgiving complaints. tracy? >> brent, good morning. it's not just traveling or getting all the groceries or the house in order that is causing all this stress. it's the people around the dinner table according to the latest poll by ivillage. 65% said they expect some sort of family disagreement this year. 68% say they expect someone at the thanksgiving feast to get on their nerves. most often they site in-laws. brothers and sisters included. the top complaints, having to spend time with family and eating or drinking too much and cooking alone and no choice in what to watch on tv. a lot of people say they are prepared for the holiday. under a quarter say they are not rel doing anything. someone else is hosting. another third haven't thought about it and 14% say they are panicked. a lot of stress going into the holiday. it's supposed to be abouting this and family and friends. >> i understand. we are hosting the big gala at our house and i can understand what people are going through. >> two days away and you may be wondering what wine goes best with turkey. maybe a bubbly champagne.

we are having inclement weather and near there, northbound 101. a new accident should be clearing quickly, but you never know until it's cleared. heading up in the connector between 101 and 280. 101 and 280 looking already. no reports of any flooding. typically through this area, we have southbound great highway. that is closed between lincoln. the sand and debris have come out. we are looking here and a slow drive as well. double time because of earlier sigalert and things continue to smooth out where the back up builds heading towards west grand avenue. the lights are on and let me get you a live look at sunol. slowing approaching the express lane and we had a slow drive in

through sunol. i guess it's somehow weather-related. >> yeah. it's not looking so great out there. all this rain this morning. chilly outside and snow falling at the higher elevations. i 80 is loezed around applegate eastbound due to spinouts. it was heavy earlier and the closer you get, the heavier it is. to the north, spotty shower activity and livermore with heavy right now. it will come to an end in the next few minutes with a light shower. down through los gatos. heavy rain and more about to come through. expect more rain on 17. all this as part of a big weather system. the cold rain will sweep through and as it does, the rain will clear this afternoon and it's cold tonight.

the mother of the 2-year-old daughter is absolutely beside herself. he might be capable of something like this. this is who we are talking about. omar sosa is on the run and police believe may be headed to mexico. the victim in the case helped police to identify him. if she was brave, his girlfriend said that it's the opposite case of when she is talking about the man who is the father of her 2-year-old daughter. >> she told us last night she wants him to repent with all of his heart and think of his daughter and turn himself in. do the right thing. she can't believe he might be capable of something like this. police believe he fled the bay area after that early saturday morning attack and may be headed south to mexico. he could be driving a ford ranger double cap with a white camp every shell. berkeley police are praising the

for the resort this morning. >> a lot of people are nervous about security screenings at the airport as they get ready to fly. we are checking in with traveler heading to the south bay this morning. my mom. she is flying out of denver. are you here? >> i'm here. good morning. >> how is it going so far? >> well, it took the eight minutes to go through disneyland and about three minutes to get my stuff in the tub and the whole process was about 25 minutes from the time i arrived at security until i was on the train. >> you have been through. how did it go. did you go for a pat down or the x-ray? what was your choice? >> i went through the regular scanner thing and no problems. >> you can look a little suspicious at times. >> the guys in front of me got pat downs.

>> what were people's sentiments? were people grumbling or were they satisfied or happy with the process? >> it seemed like let's get this done. people were concentrating on getting it done. >> as you know, it's a big hub and a lot of folks go through there. you mentioned about 25 minutes to go through the whole thing. >> yes. i was through the train and ready to have coffee. i will say there was a large tsa presence in the security area, but it did not seem they were tin tim dating in any way. they were doing their jobs. i did see one man receive the pat down. >> that's what the tsa was saying if you can avoid metal. if you set it off, that's one of the ways you get a pat down.

off of the off-ramps. getting an airport exit for sfo and near san jose international. oakland as you get off and taking bart to the terminal is a good option as well. keep it in mind and it's flowing nicely. the wet roads are an issue. the wet roads and slick conditions and the interstate 80 commute, the upper east shore impacted by the earlier sigalert, some improvement, but double your tim off of the bridge. slowing and getting better through berkeley and emeryville. oakland with the northbound side, let's look past the col see um. a lighter volume, but the southbound side is heavier than we see. a shift for holiday travel and midday to afternoon will be the heavy one. >> i was thinking about how cold it will be as the plane comes in. mom could look out the window and see snow and think they never left. >> she will say wait a minute!
