you today in the east bay. >> good morning. scott has thanksgiving day off, but rob has a look at the forecast. it's a frosty 1 to start. >> good morning. we are off to a new low this morning in oakland around 34 degrees. that breaks a record low in downtown and oakland airport. temperatures this morning 34 right now. the winds are light and other spots around the east bay in the upper 20s. we will see more of that come friday with the next chance of rain for saturday. you saw it there. today and tomorrow looks fine, but a chilly afternoon around the east bay. low 50s and mid 50s as we get

>> laptops and tvs. >> i will watch my tv inside in the warm. >> stay warm and have fun. new this morning, the oakland teenagers whose liver transplant saved his life is giving back. the 13-year-old received a transplant in 2008 and he and his family want to pay back his gift of life. miky's meals will feed more than 200 people in oakland from 9:00 until noon. it is in memory of malik grayson, a berkeley student who became an oregon donor earlier this month. if you don't plan to cook, but you want a free meal, you can stop by the spice monkey restaurant who will host the day of giving. you get a complimentary dinner if you bring 10 canned goods for the community food bank. reservations are on a first come

first serve basis. it gets started at 4:00 this afternoon until 6:45 this evening. one of the biggest events other than getting the turkey to the table is a macy's thanksgiving day parade. the big balloons all 125 of them, the bands, the lavish floats will make their way down fifth street to new york in a couple of hours. this is the 24th year of the parade, one of the best in the world. we have live pictures for you as they are lined up and ready to roll. you can watch it right here on nbc bay area starting at 9:00. we will have live previews. we will have that and a look at the preparations and new additions for the lineup. the fun doesn't stop after the parade. the dog show will air right after noon and a little behind the scenes video there.

it is one of the oldest and most prestigious sporting events in america. the competition features more than 2,000 of the leading dogs representing 150 breeds. always a fun one. grammy award winning musician taylor swift is joining the lineup tonight with a musical special called taylor swift speak now from new york city to l.a. with concerts in various locations including central park and on top of a tour bus in hollywood. swift is excited about the opportunity to be part of people's lives on an important holiday. >> thanksgiving is about comfort. there is this sound of football from another room, the low

volume football game and cooking going on and having a thanksgiving special and being a part of people's lives on such an important holiday. it's wonderful. i'm really excited about it. >> taylor swift speaks now. it's right here on nbc bay area. >> are flags are flying at half-staff as the show of sympathy. the miners were declared dead yesterday after a second explosion ripped through the mine. new zealand police said it's not save to enter to try to get the bodies out. an investigation is under way to determine what caused any of the explosions in the first place. tensions remain high on the korean peninsula. the south korea president met

with his team in seoul to assess the impact. he vows to boost troops on the island and nearby islands as well. north korea is warning there will be retaliation if south korea carries out reckless military provocations. u.s.-south korean drills are stoat begin sunday that is sure to anger the north even more. a ferryboat carrying media and rescue boats arrived at the island. most of the people have left, but there were a few left behind. the mayor-elect is more than six weeks from taking office and already getting the boot. jean quan's parked car got booted after she failed to pay 1400 in parking fines. she was not available to answer questions, but released a statement saying when i learned of the tickets on tuesday, i

are spread over into the bay area that should keep the temperatures up, but in the meantime this air conditioning really doing a number to our temperatures. 20s and 30s in spots this morning and we are looking at 40s and 50s into the afternoon. heading into the weekend, a chance of rain dropping in. a good bet by saturday morning. snow levels close to 4,000 feet, but that cold air trapped in the north bay valleys north of santa rosa, a little bit of low snow. around the bay area, temperatures in the mid 50s. close to 55 degrees in san jose. only 52 in livermore after the temperatures in the 20s to start the day. in richmond and over to concord pofr. 55 in fairfield. the seven-day forecast shows temperatures cool, but won't be as cool when the moisture comes in and a chance of a few showers. we clear up and warm up towards

it changes the function of the card and you swipe it and it's rewards. the banks are using it to give customers features and a way to save money at the time they are making purchases at their favorite restaurants or stores. many will be looking for great deals on line, but be warned. shopping online could put personal information at risk. security experts say scam artists will try to make their businesses look legitimate, but you have to be careful to make sure they are or are not. you have to make sure you shop familiar websites and don't fall for sites you never heard of like unsolicited e-mail. >> if someone gets an e-mail like i pad $150 or free for filling out a survey. nothing is really free. >> when you look through your e-mail, watch out for links with special offers even if it claims

to be from a name brand company. if you plan to buy online, make sure it's a secure site. look for https on the address bar showing the site is protecting your transaction. when you pull out the plastic, it might be wise to have a credit or debit just for online shopping with a low limit on it. that way if they get your number, they can't charge a lot of stuff. the great mall in milpitas will be open at midnight tonight. in the past two years starting at 2:00 in the morning, nearly all 700 parking spaces have been full. black friday shoppers will get a ton of special offers throughout the day and the holidays as well. we want to take a look at what's coming up late or on today in the bay. laura has the latest on what we will be doing coming up. >> how much money is being saved by not shopping.

what kind of bargain ds do they hope to get? >> they are looking for laptops and tvs and shopping online being a danger to your identity. this will be dangerous to your health. it is cold out here. not below freezing, but close to that. people in the front end were here at 9:00 at night and they did it last year and felt it was worth it and decided to do it again. best buy, 24-hours from now, they have 24-hours to go. we will talk to them and find out what keeps their minds ticking as these hours slowly go by. brent? >> thanks a lot. bob is out there in the cold. a lot of people camping out in the cold. what kind of temperatures are they facing? >> bob had a good temperature there. not freezing, but close. 34 degrees in san jose and look to the south. we are at 26 in gilroy.

morgan hill close to the upper 20s as well. 29 in livermore and 33 in fairfield. closer to the water, it's 46 degrees and the temperature in oakland. 34 is a new record low for the day. you can see off to the west, we have changes and this is part of a weather system that will bring us a chance of rain and will hold off until early saturday. if you are heading up to the sierra or down south in southern california. travel times should be fine with no weather really getting in the way. high temperatures will be running cool. low to mid 50s and san jose 55 degrees and 54 in richmond and the hilltops in the low to mid 50s. a quick check of the seven-day forecast shows today and tomorrow will be dry and more raindrops in as we kickoff the weekend. brent? >> today in new york city the floats and balloons are going to make their way from central park to harold square for the 84th

annual thanksgiving day parade. we had a peek a couple of minutes ago and michelle franzen is live with a preview of this famous and always fun holiday parade. happy thanksgiving, michelle. >> happy thanksgiving to you, brent. that's right. take a look behind me. so much activity right now. a behind-the-scenes look at the start of the parade and we're zooming up to snoopy. one of 15 giant helium balloons that will grace the route today. two newcomer balloons. diary of a wimpy kid as well as "kung fu panda." great favorites along with the old favorites like dora and kermit the frog. about 27 themed floats and 12 marching bands, clear leaders and clowns in all about 10,000 volunteers. along this route, 3.5 million
