community. this year we tried to identify folks that are shut ins. they may not even be greeting anybody besides our volunteers who are delivering the meal this is morning. a significant need. this is a time to pitch in and help out. >> how many meals are we talking about? >> 4500 meals, a ton of turkeys. >> that's a lot of turkey. >> a lot of turkey. we are fortunate to have 500 volunteers helping with the packing and the delivery and the preparation. quite a show. >> as far as how you are getting the food. have you gotten a lot of donations? more or less this year. >> the donations, we are blessed with the help of the community at this time of year. san francisco say generous community. aaa donated dozens of turkeys and the food bank helped us out and individuals. >> for those watching at home,

they can still help out. >> absolutely. we have 500 volunteers helping. we are a few drivers short. if you are not doing anything this morning around 9:00, grab a friend and help us deliver meals. >> come on down to ninth and harrison if you want to help out. live in san francisco, today in the bay. this morning people are braving the cold on san francisco streets to lineup for a hot meal. church leaders say the number of people that have shown up is skyrocketing due to the recession. this year he has seen an up tick in the number of middle class people due to unexpected job losses. >> it's cold. it's difficult. people are trying to make sure they make ends meet and make sure they also have at least some comfort and good cheer. that's what we have. a responsibility. at this thanksgiving time.

alive and have each other, but pg&e may increase the pressure in two pipelines near the that blew up. they will inform residents and the media before they increase the pressure. >> american indian activists are staging a protest on the rock. the sunrise gathering on alcatraz island started about an hour ago and they will continue until about 9:00 this morning. activists will commemorate the bay area's american indian heritage and protest american colonization. government records show alcatraz was used by american indians as a hiding place trying to escape the mission system. it was a military base and a federal prison. bringing the americas cup to the bay. moving the regatta further north on the waterfront would save san francisco tens of millions of dollars. a new plan would move the regatta to piers 10 through 29

instead of using pier 50. they say they should not be spending millions in the midst of a shortfall. runners will have a chance to burn off calories before the feast. the turkey trot kicks off at guadalupe river park. the races include the 5 k run, 10-k run and fun run for kids. 10,000 people are expected. organizers hope to raise $350,000 for three local charities including the food bank. our own bob redell will have a preview later this morning. >> today is say national holiday and local transportation will operate on a holiday schedule. caltrain will operate a sunday schedule.

my favorite thanksgiving memory is this. i have two cousin who is are a-year-older and a year younger and we all have december birthdays. they lived on this big farm and not even big enough for mcdonald's. we all get onning this and celebrate our birthdays because we were all born in december and that was the only time we were all together. well, imagine this. a 7 and 8 and 9-year-old all celebrating their birthday and of course all blowing out the candles on the cake one after another. the 7-year-old would go and he blows out his candles and they add a candle and the 8-year-old, that was me, blows out the candles and the 9-year-old did the same. you can imagine the moisture on the cake. thus was invented the spit cake. no one ate it other than the

>> good morning. once again, a live-looking shot from the south bay. still looks cold out there. you can tell looking at it. it's about 29 degrees. >> meteorologist, not. >> this is amazing video out of los angeles this morning. a fire burning out of control at a commercial building. this was shot last night with the flame shooting out of the building. there were at least two explosions heard and the roof fell into the building. they are not sure what caused the fire or the explosions. at least one firefighter was injured. the l.a. times is reporting it may have been from heat exhaustion. the fire was knocked down about an hour and a half later after crews arrived on the scene. >> new zealand is honoring the 29 miner who is died in a mining disaster this week.

flags are flying on top of sydney's harbor bridge as a show of sympathy in australia. the miners were declared dead after a second explosion ripped through the mine yesterday. it is still not to go in to retrieve the bodies. an investigation is under way to determine what caused the explosions. >> oakland mayor is up to six week away from taking office. jean quan's parked car got booted on tuesday after the mayor-elect failed to pay $1400 in parking fines. quan was available to answer the questions, but released a statement saying when i learned of the outstanding ticket on tuesday, i paid them all immediately. the neighbors say they are not giving her a break. >> she deserved it. i pay all my tickets. i never had my car booted. >> doesn't matter who you are. if you don't pay your tickets,

the san francisco police department issued these tips. be alert of your surroundings and be wary of strangers that look like they are following you and have your keys in hand. keep packages locked while in your trunk while shopping and shop with someone else, especially after dark. keep your wallet in a hard to reach place to deter pick pockets. immediately report the incident to police. the sf police said it will have horse-mounted police and plain cloaks officers and traffic enforcement throughout the holiday season. >> there several traditions on tv today. they include football games, the macy's parade and the national dog show. it features more than 2,000 of the nation's leading canines representing 150 breeds. it's one of the only remaining where the public can interact with the show dogs. you can watch the show at noon on nbc bay area and watch it on

mat bray suffered a life-threatening injury. he and his father talked with damian trujillo about the long journey back. >> matt was a star running back. it was his father who was also an assistant coach who helped save his life. both say there lots of reasons to be thankful. >> the rivalry dates back to world war ii. the lions and the bulldogs on thanksgiving day. matt and his family won't soon forget this. he was hit in an interception, his head hitting the artificial turf. the stadium fell silent as his father who was also a coach desperately tried to keep his boy alive. >> squeeze my hand when i told him you are not going away from me.

after a life-saving transplant. michael cara way jr. received the transplant in 2008 and he and his family want to give back by feeding more than 200 people in need at fitzgerald park from 9:30 until noon. this is in memory of 14-year-old malik gray son who became an organ donor earlier this month. in san jose, the just breakfast restaurant is giving away free thanksgiving dinner because they do more than breakfast. it's from 12:00 to 5:00 today or until the food runs out. volunteers are welcome to help out and the customers provide the food. some people are picking up dinners to give away. >> if you are not all about holiday shopping at the mall, you can check out one of the largest indoor craft shows on the west coast. san jose harvest festival is happening tomorrow through sunday. it's back and you can browse

thanksgiving. i was alone in a small market and her goal was to make a nice thanksgiving meal for me and he was going to cook it and have it ready so when i woke up i would smell the smell of turkey. i smell the smell of turkey and i said let's take a peek and she said i can't. i locked it in the afternoon. i said you did what? she said i locked it and it's in there. that's the cleaning mechanism. it super heats the oven to like 5,000 degrees. i had to take it apart with a wrench to get it to unhook and save the turkey. 3q

to get nearly 5,000 meals out the door into the hands of people who need them. >> it's more than a meal they provide. >> absolutely. these folks who for whatever reason, life circumstances or considerations can't get out the door. we know this is a holiday that is very much family oriented and a chance for them to have interaction. the volunteers hand deliver them to the door to the individuals. it's that contact. it's checking in and seeing how are you doing? the sense that i belong to a bigger community. it's important stuff. >> this is provided through donation. when we see the red kettles out at the turp markets, this is where the money goes to. >> absolutely. they help us carry out the programs all year. this is part of a whole continuum of service we provide in meals throughout the course of a year. we every week in the city of san francisco deliver about 20,000

drinks. if you or somebody you know needs help cooking that turkey, you can call the butterball hotline. it opens at 6:00 which is about 10 minutes from now and stays open until 6:00 at night every weekday through december. all you have to do is call 1-800-butterball to help with thanksgiving and operators can help you with everything from what pan you have to use to how to know when the turkey is done. no matter how you cook your turkey this thanksgiving, you want to play it safe as well. the fire protection agency said is the leading day for cooking fires with three times as many as the average day. here are a few safety tips. if you plan to fry, grill, or broil your food, do not leave the kitchen even for a short time. do not leave your home if you

are doing any cooking at all. keep a lid nearby so if you have a grease fire, you can smother it. with an oven fire, turn off the heat, but keep the door closed. if you have a fire, get out of the house and make sure you are safe and close the door to contain the flame. >> when it comes to thanksgiving, burning a turkey is not as bad as burning bridges with your relatives. psychologists say you need a game plan. keep your expectations low. feel free to assign seats and anticipate problems from outspoken relatives and be ready with topics to diffuse heated situations. good news about your job or a new hobby. >> you might say you know what, i'm going to get along with them the best i can. i'm not planning on having a perfect absolutely amazing day. i will just have a nice day. >> maybe it could be great. things do get tough.

take a time out or go for a walk or alone time. >> before you dive into the turkey and pumpkin pie, you might want to digest a health warning. a large meal can increase the chances of a heart attack in people who have heart disease even if they don't know they have it. that's because big meals change your blood flow. a lot of your blood has to go to the stomach to help with digestion. to avoid a trip to the hospital, magazine guys suggest skipping the appetizers and start with a salad. limit your alcohol to one drink and drink at least one full glass of water. hopefully any other dinner discomfort is heartburn, but that can be miserable as well. doctors generally recommend settling yoursome with over the counter ant acids.

amber lilly is a finalist on disney called the next big thing. she needs your help to win. amber joins us this morning to talk a little bit about the competition and do some singing too. it's early for a teenager. we appreciate you being here. tell us about the competition and how you found out about it. >> next big thing say competition on radio disney and there five artists and each is feature for two weeks and people vote who they think should be the next big thing. we found out just by watching the preview season and this is the third season and they called us and said do you want to be-the next big thing. >> of course, right? have you been singing for a long time? >> since i was 5. eight years. it's been a while. >> do you get stage fright anymore? >> i don't. you get to the point where you enjoy what you are doing and it's all about having fun.
