before tonight's thanksgiving feast. that's because they will be in the sixth annual silicon valley turkey trot that kicks off at guadalupe park. races include the 5 k run and walk and the 10-k run and a fun run for the kids. more than 10,000 people are expected to take part and they hope to raise $350,000 for three local charities like the second harvest food bank and bob redell will be live at the starting line. he has a preview of that and will be moving locations and will show you that later on this morning. >> you are no doubt getting ready to feed your family, they are preparing for thousands of people who cannot leave home. live at the salvation army with a look at how it's going. good morning. >> good morning and happy thanksgiving. close quarters here at the salvation army. volunteers are hard at work here and have been here since 4:00

a.m. cooking. i want to bring you out. tell me about what goes into all of this. >> 500 volunteers and one ton of turkey. 2,000 pounds of turkey will be delivered. 4500 meals amount of lot of effort and love. >> tell me about those folk who is will be receiving the meals. >> we tried to identify folks that are home-bound. a significant number of them, the only person they will see is a volunteer that is delivers the meal to them. >> you are working year around to help those in need? >> yes. the salvation army is a 200 bed treatment program and at any given time, there were folks here going through recovery. primary program or the family reunionification. >> how many people are we talking about? >> 200 total and probably 400

middle class people seeking help due to unexpected job loss. >> it's cold and it's difficult and people are trying to make sure that they make ends meet. people are trying to make sure that they also get at least some comfort and good cheer. that's what we have. a responsibility at this thanksgiving time to thank the people and say we are going to do as much as we can to make them have a happy thanksgiving. >> they expect to feed turkey and ham dinners to people between 10 and 2:00 today. >> the thought of turning on the gas heater is not bringing comfort to people in one neighborhood. they are reeling from the san bruno gas line explosion. some families are preparing thanksgiving dinner today just a few doors away from empty lots and spaces where homes once stood. >> i feel very blessed. i feel that not only i, but a

lot of us have many things to be thankful for. i wish we could be back home. i wish there hadn't been a loss of life. >> families say they're thankful that they are alive and have each other, but they are concerned because pg&e may increase the pressure in two natural gas pipelines near the 1 that blew up. they will inform residents and the media before they increase the pressure. >> the pat down protest looks like a bust. there weren't major delays yesterday. organizers urged people to opt out of body scanners to agents to perform more pat downs and slow down the lines. most took the body scans and they think it was effective because the publicity put pressure on the tsa. >> oakland's mayor-elect is explaining why she got the boot before taking office.

jean quan got a boot on her car after she failed to pay $1400 in parking fines. she was not available to answer questions, but released the statement saying when i learned of the outstanding ticket, i like most oakland citizens paid them immediately. neighbors are not giving her a break. >> she deserved it. i pay all my tickets and i never had my car booted. >> doesn't matter who you are. if you don't pay tickets, you will get your car booted. >> the boot has been removeed from quan's car and the last time we checked it was parked in her official spot outside of city hall. >> right now american indian activists are staging a protest on the rock. the annual sunrise started a few hours ago and will continue until 9:00 this morning. activists will gatherer to commemorate the bay area's american indian heritage and protest the american

colonization. they show alcatraz was used as a hiding place for those trying to escape the california mission system. the rock was later used as a military base and more famously as a federal prison. >> san francisco city leaders are crunching the numbers and bringing the americas cup to the bay. the chronicle reports on the waterfront would save san francisco tens of millions of dollars. moving the sailing race to piers 10 through 29 instead of pier 50. that would cocost in upgrades and safety city money. a lot of people say having the cheaper option is the better way to go when san francisco is facing a lot of budget crunches and deficits and probably not a good idea to spending that kind of money to bring a family. >> at the same time it could bring a lot of money. >> it's probably wiping each other out. the amount you bring in if you have to do the repairs. maybe there is a cheaper way.

than last year. this is for charity. they expect to raise around $416,000 this year, $90,000 more than last year. the founder of the race, can we read into the economy based on the numbers as far as participation and the money being given out? >> we believe it shows a sign of a healthier economy. not only do we have nearly 4,000 more people signed up for the race, but our responseors which is where we generate most of what we give to charity is about $450,000 in just sponsorships. >> how are you able to get this many people out when they could be home by a warm oven? are. >> when the group created this race with applied materials years ago, the thought was a lot of people don't have anything to do morning before the heavy meal and what a fun and healthy way to start the holidays. typical silicon valley resident
