>> good morning. you rarely get up this early but you headed out shopping, welcome to our world. let's start with a very chilly black friday. >> good morning. chilly for the predawn shoppers. we have 20s and 30s again. this is the story the last couple of mornings. 34 in san jose and getting very close to breaking a few low temperature records. one thing you will notice is increasing clouds from the north and these clouds if you are thinking about heading out to the sierra for the weekend, a lot of snow is flying late tonight. saturday probably two feet of snow. snow levels close to 4,000 feet. lower in the north bay. mid- to upper 50s today. i think we will run cooler for the afternoon as more clouds spill in from the north.

over to concord, highs in the low 50s and we will talk you through the timing in a few minutes. back to you. >> thank you very much. black friday bargain hunters beating down the doors at several bay area stores. we start with bob redell who is with them at a best buy in stevens creek. some have been there since wednesday night. >> another long line out front. it's interesting that each though the line is fairly long, the line does not seem as long as it was last year. does that mean it means the thanksgiving holiday sales will be down? not necessarily. we were sitting here and their thought was more stores are getting open early. that could be drawing away the people. the black friday deals, some of these have been out here for over a month already since the start of october.

you have more people shopping on line and more people buying gift cards. this is what experts are speculating. therefore you don't need to get up early. these people wanted to cash in on the door busters. there is a $1,00046 inch television w a blu-ray player. a wii. what did you lineup for? that's the 50-inch plasma, $700 and normally $1,000. what time did you get out here? >> 9:00. >> how much will you save? >> $300. poor are is it worth it? >> you have several hundred people waiting for the doors to open and just under 30 minutes. first people here well over 24

hours. live in san jose today in the east bay. >> no cutting. >> bart gearing up for the busiest shopping day of the year. trains start at 6:00, giving passengers additional room for the bags and gifts and more park suggest available since many regular commuters have the day off. 500 parking spaces were added for travelers with long-term parking reservations. a daring thanksgiving rescue in the east bay, crews pulling a man to safety after he tumbled down a cliff. the hiker fell 30 feet down a rocky embankment above the castle rock recreation area, part of mount diablo state park. today in the east bay's george kiriyama has video of that rescue. >> a chp helicopter comes to the rescue of a man in castle rock park. in minutes they left the hiker in a canvas bag and fly him off

to safety. the young man was on a thanksgiving hike with his family and friend when is he decided to climb around on a cliff. he was hugging on to a rock when the boulder came loose. the man fell 30 feet backwards with the boulder landing on his leg. the chopper landed on a patch of grass. the hiker has serious injuries, broken bones and severe injuries to his leg. an ambulance drove the young man to the medical center in walnut creek where he spent thanksgiving evening with his family. today in the east bay. >> a bay area city is struggling with an ongoing problem. tent cities. some hidden and some right out in the open. they plague vallejo. tracy grant visits one of the cities and shows us how they found a safe place to spend thanksgiving. >> i know they say the citizens and the complexes behind me,

they are worried about fires or maybe the trash or what can happen. >> he knows what he's doing is not making him popular in this vallejo neighborhood. >> 55-year-old blair puts what's left of his belongings out and sleeps in this at the present time at night. his life imploded, losing his job, his wife, and house in the process. >> there is more than just me. you drive up and down through here, you find many, many homeless people. >> police are keeping an eye on him and many homeless encampments like this one. you have to squint, but it's big enough to house many people. in april, this cadillac dealership had become a full-blown tent city until police shut it down. they are humane because they are kicking people out, but not

giving them anywhere to go. >> it might be them next. or their brother or sister or mother. >> he liked a spot not far from here where a lot of people pulled over, but he had to relocate. >> they gave me plenty of time to go. they were decent. same with here. they asked me to move. >> all the city of vallejo can do is to come through on a regular basis and continue to sweep the homeless out of the area. tracy grant, nbc bay area news. >> danville will get into the christmas spirit. the city will hold the 34th annual lighting of the old oak tree. it will be followed by holiday music and entertainment. this event-long tradition, the tree lighting is at 5:15 along diablo road. the warriors get back to work trying to bounce back from a four-game losing streak playing

20s this morning. one of the changes is increasing clouds out of the north that will eventually bring rain. 2:00 a.m. tomorrow, if there is enough cold air trapped in the higher elevation values, we may get snow before the raindrops in saturday and skies will start to clear and it will be cool and breezy. around the bay area, around the east bay, temperatures in the mid 50s and sun to start. it will be cool once again. the high clouds limit the heating. highs only in the low 50s. the rain late tonight into saturday and clearing skies for sunday and cool and breezy. we may see another round of patchy frost for monday morning. a quick check of the commute, you will see that we are looking at mainly clear conditions around the east bay. you can see the speeds right on schedule. a quick check of the pass, no

you are looking at a live picture of the oracle arena. an oakland boy who received an organ transplant is keeping a promise he made. how he is saying thank you to a donor he never knew. >> makele got a gift. the kind of gift few can give. two years ago when he was just 11 years old, he was told he needed a new liver to survive. >> i needed a liver and when i got the liver, the kid died in an accident and he wanted it donate his organs and he did. >> the donation saved his and his mother said it was time to

block the sunshine. got the chilly start to the morning and a little bit of a cooler afternoon around parts of the bay area for today. tonight into tomorrow and rain returning with the areas in the north bay. some of the higher elevation valleys could have low snow to start. clearing and breezy and temperatures only in the low 50s. more frost again early next week. around the bay area we will see highs in the mid 50s after a frosty start to the morning. freeze warnings until things warm up and you see low 50s from napa northward. we will keep the afternoon temperatures cool across the north bay. rain for the east bay and the rest of the bay area for saturday and turn breezy at times to wrap up the weekend. >> now for your bottom line. will shoppers leave them with a lump of coal?

let's go to hampton pearson live in washington, d.c. good morning. >> good morning. as a matter of fact futures are lower ahead of the opening bell. investors are worried about the tensions between north and south korea and europe's debt crisis. the asian markets were down and there is no economic data in the u.s. and wall street is only open for a half day. stocks jumping on positive economic news, the dow closing at 11,187 and the nasdaq closing at 2543. buy more, save more could be the mantra as people look to capitalize on what may be the most heavily traveled plaque friday in years. up to 138 mill 1 people will shop, some opting to point and click instead of driving to the few stores open on thanksgiving. traffic peaked at 11:00 a.m.

yesterday and core metrics said sales were up 10% from last year and people were spending less per order. gm said the plug in electric volt will get 93 miles per gallon and combine city and highway driving while powered by the batteries. the volt gets 35 miles before a gas engine generates electricity and it goes on sale for $41,000 and will be available in california. then rolled out nationwide over the next year and a half. could be a good time to buy a flat panel tv. prices have been dropping and consumers held out for better deals leaving lots of sets on the shelves. new hd sets will be cheaper and tv makers have been getting great deals on the most expensive parts for the glass. >> continuing economic coverage, brian moore takes a look at what

are out. 20s and 30s up and down and even oakland closer to the water and down to 38 degrees. another frosty start. that will keep the afternoon temperatures running on the cool side. the rain comes back in and sunday we clear out and turn breezy. the clouds dropping in from the north. you will notice highs in the mid 50s after our chilly start to the morning. the freeze warning is still up through 9:00 for inland valleys and frost advisory through 9:00 as well. from napa northward highs in the low 50s today. tomorrow plan on rain. it it will be interesting. some of the higher valleys of the north bay may see low snow to start perhaps with the cold rain and it changes over to liquid precipitation for the morning and sunday we stay breeze to wrap up the weekend. let's check the morning commute. east shore freeway times looking
