new this morning, north korea said the u.s. and south korea are putting themselves on the brink of war. north korea appears to have launched artillery drills within sight and sound of an island earlier this week. none of the rounds from the drill hit, but they are being fired. the u.s. and south korea scheduled exercises in the yellow sea for sunday. the north calls it a provocation. the u.s. is asking china to ease tension and protesting military drills by the south and the u.s. they are concerned the drills are being held too close to chinese shores. it's black friday and bargain hunters are wasting no time checking off the wish list. bob redell is live at santana row best buy in san jose. they opened about an hour ago

it will cost you though. >> yes, sir. >> reason why the crowds -- it doesn't seem not crowded now. people are trying to get out. one reason why the crowds might be down, it was cold and i don't know how much of an effect that had. 32 degrees if not below that. a lot of these deals are not necessarily the ones earlier. similar ones have been out since before halloween. that may have diluted the crowd. you also have people who are waiting to do shopping later, hoping that maybe there will be better deals at the holiday shopping season. you have more people buying on line and that combination of things. that's according to experts. the combination of things having an effect on the lower crowd. then there is the other possibility that people are just bringing in the spending and this could be a sign of the economy. we won't know by the end of

around the world warning allies about another round of wikile s wikileaks. the state department believes that the website is planning to release classified do you means that could expose u.s. sources and compromise u.s. intelligence. wikileaks tells the paper the latest leak may be seven times larger than the amount of files from last month. they found a new drug tunnel between tijuana and san diego. the second they found in less than a month. it is running between a house and mexico and a warehouse. border officials and dee agents found the tunnel and arrested several suspects. security cameras caught a robbery at a medical marijuana dispensary in san diego. thieves rushed into a pot club where patrons were inside. from the nbc station, we speak

have seen here physically that north korea attacked this island. that's a clear violation of the agreement. >> leaders in north korea said planned naval drills between the u.s. and south korea join operations and are pushing in their words to the brink of war. this morning, crews will begin working to clear dangerous gasses from a mine in new zealand where 29 miners died. special equipment arrived at the site hours ago. officials say another blast ripped through the mine today a week after an explosion caused the worst mining disaster in new zealand in decades. no one injured in today's blast. the high levels of potentially explosive methane have been blamed for the explosion. officials say it could take week or months before they are able to recover the bodies. >> three teen boys are back on land after spending 50 days in

the south pacific. they survived on rain water, coconuts and a fish and a sea gull that landed on their boat. the three set off for the home island near new zealand and they went missing at sea. the out board motor broke down and that set them adrift. the families feared the worst and held a memorial service for them and then they were picked up wednesday by a fishing boat, mall nourish and dehydrated and badly sunburned, but otherwise okay. >> in the times of giving thanks, a university is taking a microscope to gratitude and acts of kindness. george lewis takes a look at the evidence from uc berkeley. >> thanksgiving dinner for l.a.'s homeless. for the hundreds of volunteers at the los angeles mission, a different reward. >> when you serve the people as you can see the look on their face and how thankful they are

you are looking at a beautiful live picture as we begin to warm up a little bit. the world health organization said secondhand smoke kills 600,000 people every year. this morning it released the first global study into the effects of secondhand smoke and performed the study and found that secondhand smoke is particularly dangerous for children. now the w.h.o. said 1/3 of those killed are children. it found breathing cigarette

smoke creates a higher risk of sudden infant death syndrome, pneumonia and asthma. 'tis the season for stressing out. the countdown to christmas is 30 days and many have much to do and too little time to squeeze it in. live in washington, d.c. with tips. good morning, brian. >> hi, scott. it turns out we are spending more tieing to get to the gifts and the people we love than spending time with them. that's part of the problem according to consumer reports. they broke it all down for us. surveyed more than 1,000 people and found we spend 15 hours in holiday gatherings and compare that to the 10 to 20 hours trying to buy the gifts. the 7 to 10 hours we spend traveling to give those gifts away and then you add up the other part of it, four hours in the check outline and three to four hours wrapping and to two hours giving them back at the check out counter.

it almost feels like we jumped into winder this week with the temperatures in the 20s and 30s for the third straight morning around the bay area. look at the numbers. 27 in gilroy. at 33 in san jose. you can see the numbers towards fairfield and concord. san francisco at 74 degrees and 38 in oakland. very chilly this morning, but one of the changes you will see is the high clouds from the north. we will get the combined effect of the chilly start and the high clouds blocking out the sun at times. temperatures around the bay area we are looking at 40s to low 50s for highs. after midnight, rain dropping through the bay area. if enough cold air is trapped in the valleys, out towards lake port or napa county or sonoma county, at least a start and crossing through the bay area. scattered showers into saturday afternoon. things turned clear and breezy as we head into sunday and highs only in the low to mid 50s.

cold air is going to drop more snow in the sierra and 1 to two feet of snow coming down mainly on saturday. factor that into your travel plans. a nice drive. saturday the snow will be flying and more snow as we roll into sunday. around the bay area, south of san jose in the mid 50s. i will bet for areas north of the golden gate, it may be tough to climb into the mid 50s. 40s to 50s and vacaville 54 degrees. for the weekend plans, plan on a little bit of rain for saturday. cool temperatures and sunday clearing and breezy and then with the cold air coming down, this will be a reinforcing shot of canadian air and more patchy frost into monday and tuesday. checking the commute. 680 as you pass mission boulevard northbound and blocking the number lane off to the side of the road. light traffic helping the 680

commute up towards the sunol grade. all travel times looking good down 101. up towards the east shore freeway, reports of large tire pieces in the number two and lane. northbound passing the oakland coliseum, but travel times looking already. the 580 commute, things looking fine across the east bay hills. it's chilly. we are seeing 30 degree temperatures across the benicia and car quinn as straight. as we head into san francisco, critical mass at 6:15 and lots of bikes out on the street. could see delays into san francisco late or this evening and the final stop takes you away from the south bay if you want to head down to santa cruz. you will see some of that as you approach the summid. it is still cold enough. patchy frost around highway 17 this morning. >> nice to have somebody join

me. all right. thousands of bay area shoppers doing their best to boost the economy while trying to save. bob redell is at santana row. the last hour you had a guy spend $6400 or something. >> $6400. he saved 3,000. we asked them what in the world do we need that stuff for. a bunch of other electronics. i have a lot of gifts to give out this holiday season. why aren't i your friend? i don't know if i spent that much over any holiday season combined. i hear the best buy and a lot of the door busters which were frankly a lot of good deals on flat screen tvs. a lot of them were sold out. the good ones are gone. what about you? how much money are you save something a ps 3 and a 40-inch tv. >> maybe $200 to $300. >> did you have to wait in line

beside this is line? >> yeah. not that much longer in the line compared to the one we are waiting in now. >> this is the line to check out. there were hundreds out here this morning and speaking anecdotally. seems like there was nowhere near as many people as we have seen in years past. could it be a sign of the economy. people are withholding their spending possibly and another theory is that there were more stores open earlier. you had more choices and people who might have been here last year have other places to go to. they might have done that. the black friday deals have been out there prior to halloween and people were spending then. it could be that people are waiting longer into the holiday shopping season and waiting to see if there will be a better feel. a bunch of factors going to the possibility of explaining why there were smaller crowds.

we have high clouds spilling in and the chilly start. the high clouds will be a reflector. that will take the incoming sun light that has been helping to wa up. north bay locations may see highs in the 40s to low 50s. a chilly start through 9:00 this morning. chilly temperatures with a filtered sunshine. mid-and high level clouds and it will be dry. tonight into tomorrow and the rain comes back. we will see a cool start to the weekend and we clear out and dry out as we go through the weekend. more frost. it will be setting up for monday morning as well. >> thank you much. darth vader returning to the storage facility. christie's auction house failed to sell a costume from the empire strikes back. it was expected to go for between $252,000 and $363,000.

no bidders could meet the lowest price. a british newspaper reports the bbc sky and virgin are in talks to broadcast william and kate's wedding in three dimensions and will be shown in theaters and pubs. the wedding will be on april 29th in london's westminster abby. that's our newscast for today. brent and laura will be back on monday. the "today" show is next and will have a local news update in a half hour. have a great day.
