forecast. i am kris sanchez. let's get a look at your weekend forecast with jen hill. today is about another change in the weather. rain started last night and continues through today, just through the afternoon and then some more cold air comes in. thankfully, not quite as cold as it was. so, today, clearing late. then, tonight, it gets cold an again dropping syllables. you might see snow on our local mountain ranges, not just in tahoe. then, on sunday, it is going to get chilly. coming up, we will talk about how long the chilly weather will last an our next chance for rain. this morning, a teenager behind bars accused of setting off a bomb during a christmas tree lighting ceremony. they arrested 19-year-old mohammed osmund mohammed. he was born in somalia and was a naturalized american citizen and student at oregon state university. he was monitored for months as

part of an undercover operation. agents say he e-mailed a personablperson believed to have terrorist ties. he could face life in prison. oakland is on the vrncreati i.d. card that could double as an alternative banking system tore the poor. the i.d. card would work as a full service debit card that would free folks from carrying lots of cash or relying on expensive cash checking stores. it could serve as identification for illegal immigrants. the contract was awarded by a company that plans to issue the cards getting them ready to go by march. >> maybe you avoided black friday shopping because you like to keep it local. today is the day for you. small businesses are making a play for shoppers.

today, first ever, black saturday for the little guy. they are spear heading the movement to get people to shop local mom and pop stores. martinez is hosting a small business saturday with many main street businesses offering specials throughout the day. there is an estimated 28 million small businesses in the u.s. so how was black friday anyway? the results are in. it turns out across the country stores are reporting more customers and sales than last year. the national retail federation is expecting holliday sales to bring in more than $447 billion this year. that is a 2.3% increase over last year. experts say extended store hours an early store openings on thanksgiving day gave black friday sales a much-needed boost. to another thanksgiving weekend tradition, college football and a cal game that you might want to see in person despite the rain. today is the bears' final home game of the season. it is also the last game for two years at the 87-year-old memorial stadium before it

undergoes a major facelift. as "today in the bay," we report the project could have a major impact on city streets and businesses. >> reporter: for a cal football fan, nothing beats the sound of a roaring crowd when the bears are driving down the field for a touchdown. >> it is obviously really exciting, especially being in the student session. you never sit down. >> reporter: next season, the cheers will be replaced by silence. the cal bears will be playing at at&t park while the 87-year-old memorial stadium gets a long-overdue upgrade. the walls will be resurfaced and the inside will be gutted from end zone to end zone, brought up to modern standards. >> i used to come in before the game. >> reporter: since 1966, getting a hotdog at top dogs before a cal football game became a tradition. >> it is completely packed with people, wall to wall. so, in other words, you have people pressing on the counter and then they are all the way

welcome back, take a live look at the clouds looming over san jose. drop some rain down a little bit. look at your forecast a little bit. i want to tell you about something the san jose firefighters are doing. they will have their campaign. the firefighters run out to drivers and ask them to donate money to support and treat burn victims. they fill the boot from 9:00 to 2:00 today. a very good cause. at a funeral for two marines killed during a north korean

bombardment, south korea's marine commander says there will be serious retaliation as the nation prepares to go through with military exercises with the united states. they anger not only north korea but a very concerned china. during today's funeral, the south korean commander said retaliation would be, quote, thousandfold after tuesday's attack on a south korean island. two civilians in addition to the marines were killed in one of the worst artillery attacks on the nation since the korean war 60 years ago. on that south korean island today, temporary shelters are going up for residents that lost their homes in that attack by north korea. officials say residents could be living in these temporary shelters for as long as two years until permanent houses are built. the island is home to south korean bases with a civilian population of about 1300 people. federal officials say top secret information considered so damaging that it could threaten the senate ratification of the

they managed to stop the man after the suspects stabbed one of them. the wound is not serious and the officer will be okay. good thing. still no comment from president obama this morning after black friday basketball game turned black and blue. the president needed a dozen stitches in his mouth. he was elbowed during a friday morning pick up game. the elbow turns out belongs to ray who works for the congressional senate caucus institute. he went up for a shot and accidentally hit the president who was playing defense. he plays a mean defense. in a statement, he calls the president a tough competitor and perhaps more importantly, a good sport. we are still waiting on an official comment from the president but a white house spokesman laughed when asked if the president will issue an official pardon. it is basketball, right? president obama's basketball injury is the latest in a string of presidential medical mishaps.

want to take a look? in may of 2004, president george w. bush scraped his chin and knees after falling off his mountain bike at his ranch in texas. two years after that, he fell while watching a football game on t vchl. president bill clinton popped his right knee at pro golfer, greg norman's house in 1997. president george h.w. bush collapsed after feeling ill at a stake dinner in january, 1992. overnight delivery this week, fed x was supposed to deliver a package from north dakota to tennessee considering radioactive rods but the rods broke free from their packaging. not only were they not delivered on time but it took fedex sleuths a few days to track them down. imagine the intense search for something so dangerous. they were finally found in the knoxville facility. fedex says that no one was in danger because the rods were still in a protective metal

it is dry there this morning. so far, we expect a dumping of snow a little bit later. in the sierras, skiers and snowboarders are giddy as kids on christmas morning. resorts are reporting conditions like they normally see in the middle of winter and the best early skiing they have seen in decades. squaw valley is seeing eight feet of snow and twice the number of visitors. 85% of the trails at kirkwood are open. alpine meadows says that a recent storm drop, 6 to 9 feet of snow on the slopes. we know that more is coming. rain on the way, though, for most of us here in the bay area. here is jen hill with your weekend forecast. today is kind of a mix bag. we had the rap last night, the rain this morning. a little bit of rain around this afternoon and some clearing skies. the cold air is moving in. that's what's dropping the snow levels for tonight. then, tomorrow, more cool air comes in and another chilly night is in the forecast.

let's go through the sky forecast. cold front sweeps through the area. as it does, it drives some rain in front of it. we have some lingering showers behind it. that cold air is what's dropping the snow levels. in fact, we are going to see about a half a foot of snow up in the sierra nevada on top of what they have already seen. it looks like it is setting up to be a really good ski season. let's take a look at the forecast for the rainfall for the day using one of our feature cast projects. noon, still some showers around, breaks in the clouds. sunshine coming in. maybe some rainbows as well. it is 3:00. showers lingering in the east bay, down in the south bay. still, a few showers coming on shore. notice the clouds. they again to leave the area by 6:00, clearing from north to south. that's when the colder air is going to sweep in. by 9:00 tonight, we see clearer skies across the area and also colder air slipping in. for sunday, lingering clouds

despite the best of intentions, the holiday shopping season will likely wrap up with plenty of returns. some of the unwanted gifts could wind up costing the person that gets them. as "today in the bay's" liz crenshaw says, if you open the box and try to return some items, you could get hit with restocking fee. >> they get a little bit angry. >> reporter: no one wants to be slammed with a restocking fee. >> it is not good for us or the customer. >> reporter: best buy and other retailers incur quite a cost for open electronics returned. they pass the costs on to the consumer. >> the biggest reason is that it needs to be checked out. >> reporter: can you take it in the back, tape it up and sell it as new. >> absolutely not. it has to be checked out by a
