good evening, everyone. i'm garvin thomas. we begin tonight with a push for shoppers to spend more time in their neighborhood independent stores rather than in big chain stores or online. kimberly is live in san jose with the latest on what is being dubbed small business saturday. kim? >> reporter: that's right, garvin. i'm wedged right between black friday and cyber monday. small business saturday. it's a new push to get people to remember the little guys this holiday season. the movement was actually started by american express. customers that shop at small businesses the day after black friday. small business owners are excited about this concept, hoping it will draw in more customers. american express offered a $25 credit to their customers who patron small businesses. customers we talked to in the willow glen neighborhood say they know the value of shopping at mom and pop shops.

they can count on getting great one on one customer service. >> when you walk into a small business, you're actually meeting the owner and there's nothing like a business owner to really know what is needed to retain and please the customer. and so they will do almost anything to go out of their way to make sure that you get what you want and the level of service that you want. >> reporter: according to the small business administration, every $100 you spend in a locally owned business, $58 goes back into the community through taxes, payroll, and other expenses. small businesses revenue two-thirds of all jobs. it was really a threat on twitter and facebook page had more than one million followers. so perhaps this trend will become a holiday tradition. live in san jose, nbc, bay area

news. >> thank you, kim. business owners at san francisco's historic fishermen's warm have agreed to a $15 million plan to make it more appealing to city dwellers. jefferson street will reduce traffic and include more outdoor cafes. it's long been a top tourist attraction but many san franciscons consider it tacky and overrun with tourists. he says the goal is to change that perception. >> it will be a much more gracious street. it will have more plantings, a lot more space set aside. one of the healthy signs of a good street is when you see people stopping, not just walking along the street but stopping and sitting and eating their lunch. >> funding for the project has not yet been secured. the city's director says that the changes to jefferson street could begin to take shape within the next six months. locked and not loaded.

dozens of people strapped on their guns and took to the streets near an east bay restaurant today. the so-called open carry enthusiast gun carrying people were met at a restaurant by protesters who say that carrying weapons even unloaded is not safe. organizers say it's to remind people of self-defense and remind people of their second amendment rights. >> it's something that is a right that we enjoy and also it's actually reducing the crime rate here in society. >> they have actually more power than some platoons, fire power. but unlike soldiers, these people are not accountable. >> california gun owners can openly carry guns, as long as they are unloaded or carried near school or government buildings. time to get a check on the weather with jennifer hill. lots of rain today?

>> two, one! >> thousands of faces jammed pioneer courthouse square friday evening unaware that they were the targets of a massive car bombing. federal officials say that mohamed osman mohamud was scaling a bomb. >> the device was fake. it looked real. it was meant to be so the suspect believed that it was a real device. >> reporter: court documents showed that the sting was months in the making. but he told investigators that he had been thinking of a violent jihad for months. >> the individual that was arrested said in the affidavit that he chose portland because it's exactly the kind of place where this stuff doesn't happen. >> reporter: the bomb wasn't real.

let's call it spy game 2. the 49ers are front and center but as the victim. today the lead came down hard on the broncos for videotaping san francisco's walk through before their game in london last month. head coach must pay $50,000 and the team owes another $50,000 for breaking the rule. an investigation will be done to determine the bronco's video operation took a six-minute video of the niners walk through in london and then gave it to mcdaniels. the coach declined to view it but then did not report it. the patriots were punished for taping violations four years ago when they happened to be on new england staff. today they apologized. >> i apologize for not reporting the improper conduct of our video director that took place saturday in london before our game against the san francisco 49ers. it was an isolated situation

the san francisco zoo set out quite a feast. this was part of the thanksgiving weekend feast for the beast. carrot, apples, celery, and corn and pumpkin. perhaps the vegies did not hit the spot. the highlight was when one of the grizzlies took a dip in the pool and caught a fish with his bear claws. the feast of the beast goes on all weekend. you can catch feedings tomorrow until 3:00 p.m. >> it looks like he caught it in his mouth, actually. nbc news is next. we look forward to seeing you again at 6:00.
