i'm bob redell live in danville. open land right here has people living right here not so happy. >> an east bay city will soon say goodbye to a big box store. what could move in to take its place. it's another cold start to the day this monday, november 29th on today in the east bay.

good monday morning. scott is on assignment and we start with rob. his assignment is to tell us how cold it's going to be. >> very cold around the bay area. 20s and 30s and patchy frost again. stay tuned to your traffic report. you may have patches of ice in the north bay. 26 in napa. you can see the rain moved on and clouds to the north not impacting us. we will wake up to the chilly mornings and should stay dry for the next chance of rain holding off until thursday and rain off and on for the second half of the week. despite the chilly start, a nice day. the trend we have seen with the chilly afternoons and highs mostly in the mid 50s. same story as you get to the east bay hills. coming up, we talk about the chances of rain. today is looking good. in fact it's great. we have mike back with the

traffic early this morning. >> thanks a lot. let's check in with an accident already this morning in oakland. >> first of all, thanks to rob out here, holding things out. we look outside to westbound 580 at the off-ramp. all of the activity should be clearing up and chp has it wrapped up. as we zoom out of the castro valley, blips showing up, but highway 13 around the 580 split. a few cars going slower because a live look shows you how light the volume is. no major closures as far as construction goes. we are all back to work this morning as the congestion starts to build. >> a battle is brewing in an east bay community between a developer hoping to build dozens of homes and a neighborhood group saying it will add too much traffic and put pressure on

a school system that is too full. today in the east bay is live in danville with more on that development. >> good morning to you. what's behind me is mcghee ranch. this is over 400 acres of open space of mount diablo. it is normally used for horses and cattle. they developed over 100 acres and put on it about 85 homes. some of the people around here not happy. they set up a facebook page and a website to collect signatures for a petition against the project. almost 350 people have signed on and you should be able to take a look at that. opponents are not concerned about the loss and you believe the project will increase traffic and stress for local schools with students and bring renters into the area and they wonder about the impact on green

valley creek. they don't want a densely populated neighborhood. summer hill homes tells the county times that their company will try to work with the community on this. they are not surprised that there is opposition to this plan. they say sometimes folks look at open ranch land and think it's going to be like that. it's hard to see it as private land. the planning commission meets and it will be an opportunity for the public to comment. it will be an environmental impact report that's normal in a situation like that. they are saying that could take nine months to a year. this is months out if they were to get approved where they are putting a shovel into the ground. bob redell, today in the east bay. >> fremont neighbors will say goodbye to a barnes and noble store and hope a whole foods will move in by the end of december. a spokes person would only say

the grocer is interested in fremont. bookstore workers were told that barnes and noble decided to close after a landlord demanded an increase. it's located at the shopping center near fremont and maui boulevard. four people are a united states kood of robbing a designer store. three men stormed the store saturday. the group shoved a sales woman and took $9,000 in purses and wallets. a female get away driver helped them get away, but the police used the description to arrest all four people and recover the stolen items. the search is on for two men who tried to rob a liquor store in bay point. one of the men went into a liquor store yesterday and pointed a gun at the clerk and demanded money. the clerk fought back, struggling until a second man

came in and pointed a gun at the clerk. both rather than away without anybody. they left a blue or brown sedan. >> the travel rush continues at sfo. they saw a 4% increase in passengers for the-day thanksgiving holiday. flights were mostly on time and the airport duty manager said it was not as crowded as it usually is on the sunday after thanksgiving because some people are still traveling home today. >> i think it's because now they are starting to come home staggered. maybe sunday and monday where as it used to be everybody came home on sunday. >> no delays. we checked a couple of minutes ago. of the 440,000 passenger who is came through sfo in four days, only a couple of people objected to the screening procedures. oakland school leaders, police and kaiser will partner at 9:45 this morning to announce a major investment in oakland kids.

it will be at the oakland high school and kaiser funded nearly 800 community grants nationwide to help people in need of medical care, food, and housing. major league baseball manager will be in the east bay to kickoff a food drive. he is the cofounder of the animal rescue foundation. he will be at the alamo safeway store at 2:00 giving autographs in exchange for pet food. it started after a may 1990 baseball game between the a's and the yankees when a stray cat wandered on to the playing field. when he found out the cat would be euthanized, they found a home for and founded arf. bruce got the start and did not do well in the game against the dolphins. he threw two interceptions and one touchdown pass.

they did most of the offensive work, running the opening kickoff for a touchdown and catching a td pass. but the dolphin diagnosis their best work in the second half. the final score is 33-17 and dominated possessions. the raiders fall below 500. the former raider jerry rice was inducted into the football hall of fame and already we are talking about next year's class. the semi finalists were named yesterday and the bay area is well-represented. 26 people among them including 49er owner. he ran the team during the montana-rice era. three former 49ers and three former raiders. of the raiders, roger craig, charles hayley who has a couple of rings of his own and for the raiders, tim brown is leading the way. lester hayes and ray guy.

the nasdaq dropped to 2534, but rose 1% on the week. airlines are adding more seatsas they cautiously get the optimistic travel outlook. the carriers added 3% this month with more flights or bigger planes. we are out with the annual survey with passengers giving the highest marks to virgin america and southwest airlines. back to you. >> holiday shoppers hit keyboards and smart phones for cyber monday looking for deals on line. a vast majority of sales come without sales tax. in 1992, the supreme court issued a ruling shielding online retailers from collecting sales tax unless they have a physical presence in the customer's state. it's a legal loophole that the retail federation wants to close. >> the money at stake is upwards of $23 billion or more.
