shot across the bay. today, november 29th on today in the bay. good monday morning and thanks for joining us. >> i'm brent cannon. time is 5:00. rob is getting it started with a look at the hour by hour forecast. >> it's a chilly forecast in many spots this morning. san jose right now is 36 degrees. probably on the way to patchy frost around santa clara valley. you will appreciate the sunrise at 7:04. look at the lunchtime temperatures. 40s to low 50s and should hit mid 50s. as quickly as 7:00 tonight, temperatures are dipping back into the 30s. more on the frosty temperatures and checking the monday commute, here's mike. >> waiting on the sunrise and looking at the cold.

highway 17 and that's blocking the slow lane and a lot of folks will be heading out into the south bay. no major slowing. blocked by a crew and the big rig has to get there and the rest of the south bay and out of the east bay and the peninsula. >> today is the day online holiday shoppers have been waiting for. cyber monday means deep discounts whether you have access to the internet. today in the bay's chris sanchez joins us with tips. good morning. >> good morning to you. i'm here shopping in my cubicle. i don't need to whis her. 107 million americans or in five people say they plan to shop the deals on cyber monday since they are back at work. most of us have deals at home. here is one of the biggest online retailers. amazon. they are boasting up to 70% off

of 27,000 titles. we have been checking back and forth all weekend because in my family we refused to shop black friday. they have been around for a while. on this screen here, we have the deal that would e-mail timmy by walgreens. that's a site i have a relationship with. they say only trust websites you know and if you see a good deal on another website, make sure you check it out and ask friends and family if they shopped that before. also if you are logging on today, don't do it through an unsecure wi-fi hot spot. don't use the hot spot there. that can give access to hack fors are the user name. that can make you a victim. when you find a deal, watch the

expiration time. some of them are only available for a couple of hours. you don't want to fall victim to something that you think you are getting a deal and you end up paying more because it expired. finally what mama said is true. if it sounds too good to be true, it's probably not true. >> when someone gets an e-mail that says i pad $150 or free, people need to think about that. nothing is really free. >> okay so i have been checking my twitter account to seat deals people are talking about and there extraordinarily great deals that people are boasting, but they may not always be true. if it sounds too good to be true, bear that in mind and never use your debit card. that offers less if you are a victim of crime. they can empty your bank account and you have little resource. use a credit card and if you have one with a low limit.

at least that way if you are hacked and somebody steals your identity and credit, they only have access to ability bit of funds. >> good tips. thanks a lot. cyber monday is expected to be a good one, but may not be good for american business. for more on that, we turn to courtney reagan at cnbc world headquarters. >> good morning to you. the national federation said people shopped at the malls up 9% from last year and spent $45 billion. with the holiday shopping season just beginning, today is cyber monday when people get back to work and shop online from their desk. many retailers are offering web discounts for days and offering a cyber week with sdoubts beyond today like free shipping. cyber monday was the second highest spending day with shoppers buying $898 million

worth of holiday gifts. they are expecting an increase this year. they expect 106 million people to shop online today and they usually lose out on cyber monday with a lot of productivity with $600 million by some accounts. it's not just cyber monday. they lose an average of $3,000 per employee to holiday shopping at work during the entire holiday season. back to you. >> thank you very much, courtney. 5:05 and palo alto police are putting out a warping after a man tried to sexually assault a young woman. it happened on the street near the stanford shopping center. the woman told police she was walking to meet her mother after stepping the night with friends when a man pushed her to the ground and tried to remove or clothes, but she was able to get away. the suspect is described as a white man in his late 20s over 6 feet tall and 175 pounds.

he had short dark hair and a goatee. the travel rush continues this morning at sfo. the airport had a 4% increase in the number of performs from last year. flights were mostly on time and the airport manager said it wasn't as crowded as it usually is for the sunday after thanksgiving. people are still traveling home today. >> i think it's because now they are starting to come home staggered. maybe sunday and monday where as it used to be everybody came home on sunday. >> the airport duty manager said of the 440,000 passengers who came through sfo in the last four days, only a couple objected to the new screening procedures. >> one too many dogs could get you in trouble in one peninsula city. a foster city committee is cracking down on people who bring too many dogs to one of three off leash dog parts. it comes after two women got

into a fight at a park this past summer and a man was bitten trying to separate the dogs. the parks and recreation committee is set to vote wednesday and will pass on to the full city council. >> a well-known actor and comedian will be in the area. bob newhart will take part at the marin veteran's memorial for the first of four speeches by newhart. he will be in oakland, san mateo and back in marin. it is designed to be an open unbiassed forum for the exchange of ideas and enrichment of the community. >> a christmas tradition needs help if it's going to happen next year. organizers of christmas in the park say they need to raise $200,000 to be able to have that event next year. every year for the past three decades, two acres in downtown are transformed into a winter

showcase. it is open every year and open again this year, but organizers say recent budget cuts put it in jeopardy. locals say it would be a shame to see it go. >> i would feel ter fibl they didn't have it anymore. >> we need it definitely. it's been part of san jose. we can't stop is it. >> all of my children and grandchildren are grown, but we enjoyed so many years of coming to christmas in the park. it just seems like the community as large as it is, it needs it. >> a christmas in the park has always been free and they want to keep it that way. they put up doe nation boxes in the park and say if every visitor put in $1, it would be well-funned. 450,000 people are expected to go through the park between now and when it closes on january 1st. >> big tradition. it's 5:08 right now. want to check the roadways with mike for debris.

event. the arrest and attempted attack led to backlash against the muslim community. this morning the fbi is investigating a square off. they are offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the arson case. they say they cannot be sure the fire is directly linked to the bombing attempt in portland or this was a hate crime. other than the timing. the mosque suffered fire and smoke damage. >> kids are using an old spice for a new high. they are turning to nutmeg and posting videos on you tube. it makes a similar high to smoking marijuana. one drug counsellor said getting high with nutmeg can be as dangerous as any other narcotic. parents should not be hung up on what kids are using, but more concerned with why they get high. >> they should be more concerned about the fact that their kids

seem hell bent on getting high. >> police say there is no law against abusing a legal substance like nutmeg, but there dangerous side effects including increased heart rate, blurred vision and convulsions. pa. >> eating disother thanes in children are on the rise. the report shows about a half percent of teen girls have anorexia and 1% to 2% are bulimic. they are noticing the problem in teen boys. the americana academy of pediatrics said boys make up about 10% of eating disorders. be aware of the trends and stay familiar with detection and evaluation methods. the morning cup of joe may do more than wake you up, but lower your risk of brain cancer. researchers at brown university found people who drank a half cup of coffee or more a day had a 34% decreased risk of a brain

tumor compared to non-coffee drinkers. it's strongner men and only applies to gleomas. >> it's time to do something with the leftovers. if you have not eaten the leftovers by now, it's time to freeze them or toss them out. if the turkey and other fixings have been refrigerated, they should be okay to freeze. smelling the food to make sure it's good is fine, but never do a taste check. the agency said remember the old adage. when it doubt, throw it out. >> charitable giving is not enough to keep up with services. they hope it's the beginning of economic recovery. a national report shows about a third of the american charities reported an increase in the first months of the year and they expect more good news in the 4th quarter. they expect more good news in the 4th quarter. charitable giving fell

good monday morning. 5:22 and it looks chilly. it is 34 degrees in san jose right now. it is cold with patchy frost. not much wind in san jose and not much in oakland, but plenty chilly. 36 degrees in san francisco. as seen from san bruno mountain, a bit of a breeze. closer to the water, this morning we have the chilly temperatures and patchy frost and cool sunshine. that should take us through wednesday and for the far north bay, we may see a few showers. the rest of the bay area, we will start to see rain. it may have seemed like a wet start to the year, but the most part, we look at the rain areas north of san francisco at or above where we should be. drier further south, but this is just the start of the rainfall season. 180% of average is pretty impressive. we are not going to be adding to

rain totals today, as we head towards the middle of the week, more clouds are filling in and a better chance of rain. the next couple of mornings had frost and temperatures in the 20s and 30s. as we go into wednesday, thursday, and friday, rain will move through the rest of the area. the high country with chilly temperatures. as we head towards wednesday, more snow dropping in. today highs in the 50s and chilly sunshine. 57 degrees around san jose. low 50s across the north bay. a quick check of the with a chance of rain in the far north bay and thursday into friday. >> thanks a lot. the next time you go wine tasting, look carefully. the guy in the tasting room might be an nfl legend. >> the super bowl champion is known for crying tears of joy

store in walnut creek. three men stormed a store in the broadway plaza shopping center saturday. they shoved a sales woman and took $9,000 in purses and wallets. a female driver helped them get away. they used a description to recover the stolen items. two armed robberies are on the run. they tried to rob a liquor store in bay point. contra costa county deputies say one suspect went into a dave's liquor and pointed a gun at the clerk and demanded money. the clerk fought back and struggled. that's when a second man came in and also pointed a gun at the clerk. both men eventually ran away empty-handed. they believe they fled in a blue or brown sedan. new this morning, congress returns to work to deal with a plate of leftovers. lawmakers will decide whether to renew the bush era tax cuts due

to expire at the end of the year. they have to pass a spending bill to avoid a shut down. they will look at food safety edge slagz that gives more power over recalls, increase inspections and set higher standards for food procedures. of course democrats will try to tackle the dream act before republicans take control. the "today" show will have more on all of this starting at 7:00. >> facing a tough fight with angry neighbors. 85 homes are build on mcghee ranch southeast. neighbors are concerned about the increased traffic and overcrowding for local schools. a special planning commission meet suggest set on the project tomorrow night at 7:30 at the town hall meeting hall on front street. the developers are taking public

input on what should be included in the environmental impact report through december 16th. fremont neighbors hope that a whole foods store will move into where a barnes and noble bookstore will close at the end of december. a whole foods spokesperson would only say the grosser is interested in fremont. barnes and noble decided to close after the landlord demanded a major increase in rent. the bookstore is located in the plaza shopping center. >> oakland school leaders, police and kaiser will partner up to announce their support for the city's children. they will unveil a plan for oakland's kids before 10:00 this morning. the events will be at oakland high school. earlier this month, kaiser announced they funded near 800 community grants to help people in need of care, food, and housing. tony lo russa will be back to kickoff a holiday pet food

an 18-minute drive and the toll plaza is starting to show a few more cars off of 880 not a problem. the nimitz freeway in the a problem. the golden gate bridge starting to show a few more cars down towards the toll plaza here. further north, an easy drive from novato. rob, the north bay may see issues for a frost. you have yet to see anything, but the warning for folks. >> down to 26 degrees in napa this morning, patchy frost and a good possibility in the north bay with frost as well. we are getting close to freezing at 34 degrees. some temperatures near 30 around morgan hill. we are at 36 in oakland and san francisco the more mild location near the water. 43 and a little breeze fre the san bruno mountain. as we show you the view, clear skies and dry conditions hoping the temperatures drop off. a lot of clouds that will try to spill our way at times. you may see a high cloud or two,

revelations. they detail the relations between the u.s. and foreign diplomats. there seems to be a lot of explaining to do. what i that are saying is the biggest bombshell? >> it has to be the revelations that the u.s. was spying on secretary general and we are not just talking about the guys in over coats and hats. we are talking about an active program trying to get his dna, credit card numbers and his frequent flyer number. not just him. other top officials. 33 embassies around the world were apparently involved. there were delicate conversations with pakistan. the soudy kiaudi king abdullah's that we bomb the nuclear program to cutoff the head of the snake.

the gossip about member of the british royal family involved in an unidentified shenanigan. what it all comes down to is u.s. diplomats around the world losing a level of credibility and being questioned really about their methods and motives. >> how can the soldier accused of being the source in all this who is relatively low in rank have access to all the information? >> that are is a very good question. there a couple of answers. one is he is still a suspect. did all this information, this huge amount of information come from one person? it's not out of the realm of possibility. after 9/11, there was a lot of talk about information and intelligence sharing. what that did was knocked down a lot of traditional fire wall that is the pentagon would be able to look at the state departments and fbi and cia's most secret information so they could know what was going on and

so they can assimilate it. that was way a person of a low rank could be able to tap into what's essentially like floodwaters out of a dam and divert it for his own purposes. that's if this person really was guilty of what the united states suspect he was. >> quite amazing. so much te look into. thank you very much. >> new this morning, south korea now says it will no longer conduct a live fire artillery exercise on the island that was targeted last week by north korea. the military did not give a reason for the cancellation. new video this morning of u.s. training exercises in south korean waters. the foodage shows planes taking off from the aircraft carrier uss george washington. it shows meetings between south korea and navy officers. north korea is rate for an attack. the national committee said they support peace on the korean

in online sales. >> that's what they are hoping for. you guys are hard at work in the studio. we know that in five americans plan to look for cyber monday deals. of course none of the folks here in the newsroom. i found deals. i'm shopping in a professional capacity. my boss gave me the all clear. i am looking at one of the biggest online retailers, amazon. they have deals that expire throughout the day. some are good for an hour or less than that. also on this side, we found one of the offers that i got in my e-mail inbox this morning from children's place. it's cyber monday deal, 25% off. this could likely be trusted. i have a long standing relationship with this retailer and i used them before. that bring us to the first of our tips from the experts. shop only the websites that you know. if you get an offer from a website you haven't heard of, check around so thaw know you

are using the website that you can trust. make sure you use the secure wi-fi hot spot so hackers cannot get your password and user information. if you go to a starbucks or local coffee shop, make sure it's a secure hot spot. watch the expiration date on the deal so you don't think you are getting a better deal than you are actually getting. if it is too good to be true, you know the saying. it probably isn't true. >> when someone gets an e-mail to the effect of an i pad for $100 or free for filling out a survey. you need to think about that. nothing is really free. >> i have been checking my twitter could and nbc is my twitter name if you want to follow. there plenty of cyber minute deals to be had. some of them may not be legitima legitimate. make sure you use a credit card instead of a debbid card so that losses are limited.

also i would add one more tip. make sure you do a little work so your boss is not suspicious. >> i'm telling. wait. i don't have to. holiday shoppers hit the computer and keyboards and smart phones for cyber monday and looking for all kind of deals online as chris mentioned. a vast majority of sales come without any sales tax. a 1992 u.s. supreme court ruling shields online retailers from collecting sales tax unless they have a physical presence in the customer's state. it's a legal loophole that the retail federation wants to close. >> the money at stake is upwards of $23 billion or more. some estimates as high as $40 billion. >> many cash strapped states are anxious for shares of dollars each year, but the foundation said various state and local tax
