giant rain drops pelted me on my way in. if you're headed out you will get pel letted as well. i'm chris sanchez. here's your weekend forecast with meteorologist nick o'kelly. >> good sunday morning to you. i'm meteorologist nick o'kelly. tracking the latest storm system to hit the bay area, rain will be heavy at times on and off throughout the day today and winds gusting to 25 and possibly 30 miles per hour,s specially in the higher terrain. looks like the next several days will be wet and unsettled. a series of storm systems head our way. we have a transfer of somewhat drier weather towards friday. christmas day is still about a week away. we will have plenty of rain between now and then. today in some parts of the bay area, the wind gusts are causing some homeowners to shout timber. in the montclair neighborhood the saturated ground gave way bringing down this giant pine tree, crashed right into the house. the people who lived there had to call out an arborist to help clear out the debris.

the tree punctured a hole in the roof and the ceiling of their living room. no one was hurt, though. but the folks in the santa cruz mountains are still preparing for the worst that this series of storms will bring. people in the benloman area know if there is a power outage it could last several days. neighbors are picking up sandbags and keeping an eye on the river which is moving quickly but for now is only rising slowly. but, of course, rain in the bay area and sacramento often means snow is dumping in the sierra and that's what's happening this weekend. we caught up with skiers and snow boarders buying gear at helms of sun valley and they say they are excited to enjoy the fresh powder. we'll show you more on the folks headed to tahoe and get the information you need to know about driving there, whether you're headed there or whether you have friends and family headed there or coming back to the bay area. a storm of dissent is brewing against an east bay police department, a family of

an unarmed man shot and killed will announce their plans to sue the city's police department. oakland police shot 37-year-old derrick jones in early november. they were called out to investigate jones' girlfriend's claim he assaulted her. police say jones refused police orders to surrender. officers say they shot jones after he appeared to be reaching for a metal object in his waistband. police say that metal object ended up being a small scale used for weighing marijuana. this week in san bruno residents are preparing for the holidays despite remnants of the deadly gas line explosion and today people in the area will be able to voice their concerns at a town hall meeting with pg&e. jackie spear and pg&e's vice president of gas transmission will speak today at 2:00 at the san bruno center. this as an audit reveals the utility company may have taken short cuts during gas line

inspections that skip over problems like weak welding. it's one of the factors the ntsb says may have contributed to the explosion. tomorrow walgreens will team up with the government to give free flu shots to folks who don't have insurance in the east bay. starting tomorrow get a voucher at a public health office in oakland and eight underserved cities in alameda county and trade that in for a free flu shot at any walgreens pharmacy. if you need a flu shot and can't afford one, find more information on-line at flu.gov. facebook might want to take its own advice and watch what it posts on-line. the social networking site accidentally exposed a new website features it has in the works. facebook disabled the site for 45 minutes and then tweeted an apology after they caught the leak, but that was more than enough time for folks to get a sneak peek. so, just what was leaked? and what can you expect? published reports compiled by cnn say that a new memory feature that compiles photos and

status updates from years past and perhaps an outside world filter for your news feed. new this morning, president obama's making his last ditch attempt to relieve concerns about a nuclear arms pact with russia as it moves toward a final vote. in a let hours ago the president insists the so-called s.t.a.r.t. treaty won't limit the development or use of the country's missile defense program. an amendment that would have killed the treaty was blocked yesterday by a 59-37 vote. we are watching this one developing for you this morning. just as we watch lawmakers overturn the military's don't ask, don't tell policy yesterday morning which means service members will be able it to serve openly no matter what their sexual orientation. president obama is expected to sign the bill which will end the 17-year-old don't ask, don't tell policy. however the pentagon could take a whole nother year to carry out those changes. meanwhile a day after the senate failed to pass the dream act president obama is vowing he will try again with the next

congress. the dream act would have been a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants who came to this country as children but completed two years of college or military service while here. now, two bay area college students could be deported. 18-year-old elizabeth lee faces deportation to peru where she was born and 20-year-old steve lee, no relation to elizabeth, could be deported to peru where he was born. neither steve nor elizabeth came to the states as children. they came to the states as children i should say, and they no longer have family or friends in peru. still ahead on "today in the bay" -- tourists trapped as flames rip through a hotel. the frantic rescue and latest on the investigation. just how faux is that fur you're wearing? the nbc bay area exclusive and what's being done to close a legal loophole. better double check those presents you're putting under the tree. the gift on the kids wish list that comes with unexpected sex appeal.

taking a live look at the golden gate bridge and we can see the cloud bank in the distance. expect rain off and on. we're watching the radar. lots of greens and yellow and orange as well. 15 people are dead and 12 are recovering from injuries after a fire ripped through a hotel in the philippines this morning. fire fighters frantically rescued dozens of guests from the burning build. some were moved to tears upon finding 15 burned bodies on the top two floors of the five-story hotel. of the 15 people killed, nine were nursing students, the rest were members of the family that owned the hotel including three

children. at least 12 people were sent to the hospital with minor burns. it's not yet clear what caused this fire. eight people are recovering from injuries this morning as well after a tour bus flipped over in the rocky mountains. a bus carrying a texas church group apparently rolled off the road on to its side making a turn on an icy highway. the accident happened just after 8:00 near the town of gunson in colorado. eight people were injured in the crash, two seriously, everyone is expected to recover. rain isn't stopping construction crews from reaching a milestone on the bay bridge span this weekend. crews finished installing the third set of the tower sections ahead of schedule yesterday. that's nice to hear. this is a time lapse video of the process we can show you. initially call transleaders were hoping the project would be done by christmas eve. now, when the last piece is put in place next year the third tower will be the bay area's

highest landmark. both directions of the new span are expected to open in 2013. and now to an update on an nbc bay area exclusive investigation. the president is closing a legal loophole when it comes to labeling clothes with fake fur. an nbc bay area report discovered that some coats allegedly made with fake fur are actually made with real fur, often times from an animal called a raccoon dog. do you know if that's real or fake? >> that's fake. >> it's fake. you're sure? >> yes. >> with these tufts that's a signature characteristic of raccoon dog. my best guess would be raccoon dog fur. >> are you kidding me? okay. honestly didn't realize. >> lack can dogs are part of the dog family, but they resemble a raccoon. federal law up until now only required items to be labelled as fur if they continue fur value at $150 or more. but now the president has just

weekend. what can we expect for this week ahead as we run our errands. let's check our forecast with meteorologist nick o'kelly. >> good sunday morning to you. i'm meteorologist nick o'kelly. obviously a very active weather pattern. not just for us in the bay area but all across the west coast. and you can see from the satellite picture, a couple of the culprits. first of all, pinwheeling area of low pressure diving south out of the gulf of alaska has a lot of kolsds air with it. and when a system is this large it doesn't move very quickly. it's going to sit off our coast for the next several days and keep us in active weather pattern. speaking of active weather the jet stream racing across the pacific at almost 200 miles per hour and just like a fire hose it is aimed right at the bay area here for the next 12 to 24 hours we're looking wet and unsettled. winds will be in the range of 15 to 25 miles per hour wit

wightly higher gusts in the higher terrain, above 1,000 feet. no wind advisories posted yet but we'll keep you abreast of any changes. the sierra has been pounded bay series of storm systems and we'll continue to s t he snow and rain pile up in the next several days because a series of weather systems will rotate right through that jet stream and pound the bay and central and northern california. how much rainfall? that is a big question. most spots in the higher terrain at the santa cruz mountain range saw between two and three and a half inches with the last round of heavier weather. this time around we're looking at between an inch and two inches for places like benloman and around bonny dune, santa cruz mountains getting the bulk of this moisture. more like an inch, inch and a half we think, through the day today and into tomorrow. now there could be some isolated thundershowers embedded in this system as well. just unstable enough we may hear the rumble of thunder at times

today. temperatures will be in the mid 50s all the way through. 55 pacifica, 57 san jose, 57 san francisco and again, maybe the flash of lightning and the rumble of thunder at times out there today, with those isolated thundershowers. here's a look at the extended forecast and as we take a peek at temperatures they're not really going to go anywhere for the next several days. highs will remain mainly in the mid 50s. monday, possibly a few breaks in the overcast for a peek of sunshine, but you can see we're unsettled through with more wet weather tuesday and wednesday. possibly a break towards the end of the week. at this point could be another heavy rainstorm coming our way through next saturday. >> merry christmas. as we know, rain, sleet, wind, no match for santa no matter what he is wearing. check it out. about a dozen runners braved the santa -- braved the rain in santa monica for the speedo run this weekend. the runners sang christmas

carols as they jogged through the streets to raise money for an athletic program for the kids in the san bernadino district. the program encourages kids to become active in sports. it's a bit chilly for that. an oakland group with more than 35 years of singing experience together is very close to some major bragging rights and you can help them. they are among the finalists on the hit nbc show "the sing off." at stake a sony record contract and $100,000 and, of course, bragging rights. ♪ ♪ all i want is a little respect just a little respect ♪ >> they are from choked. the group is called the talk of the town and they are the talk of the town. the oakland group made its to the singoffs. they may be the eldest group on the show but they have some pretty serious young fans because one of the members is the head custodian at a

snow. travel on 50 and 80 getting up to the sierras is going to be difficult throughout the day today and looks like the fun's not over yet. the next several days, are going to be rather wet and unsettled for us. here's a look at the seven-day forecast. we have a chance of rain, could be heavy at times especially through midweek. drier weather towards thursday and friday and another storm for christmas day. this weekend a major break through for the victims of what has been seen as the largest ponzi scheme in history. and some local victims are reaping the benefits. robert pickhour was the widow of one of the largest beneficiaries of bernie madoff's schemes paid more than $7 billion to make up for other people's losses. she will pay. the money was earn in the fraud by her late husband who invested many years ago with bernard madoff. prosecutors say over time he withdrew $7 billion in bogus profits into his accounts. that amounts to more than a third of the money that

disappeared in the scandal again, his widow saying she's going to pay $7 billion back. the announcement is a welcome holiday surprise for many madoff investors including at least one couple here in the bay area. the chronicle reports lanor and charles will be getting back $750,000 in savings lost in the ponzi scheme. 70-year-old lanor inherited the money from her father and then invested it through stone. the money found its way into a madoff feeder fund. a short but busy week on wall street and traders will take care of business before the holiday break. cnbc takes a look at the upcoming week in the world of business. on wall street as in the rest of the country santa claus is coming to town and traders are getting out of town early. the markets will be closed on friday for christmas eve and that means there are four days to trade and four days to cram in a week's worth of economic news especially of the housing

variety. sales of new and existing homes are expected it to show increases for november. we will find out if home prices were still following -- falling or stabilized in some markets. new numbers for mortgage loans expected to show a continued movement higher and we'll learn if that combination of low prices but higher loan brats raitts is continuing to drive down demand for loans. both for new buyers and owners who want to refinance. one early christmas gafts for under water homeowners, freddie mac and fannie mae will be suspending foreclosures until after new years. many businesses are hoping the personal spending and income figures we'll see for last month will be higher, forecasting a solid finish for the holiday shopping season. to go with those numbers, we'll get a final reading on consumer confidence and two more would-be holiday blockbusters premier "true grit" and "little fockers." i'm sue herrera. get all your business news on

be equipped with larger missiles and precision bombs. more than 150 inmates are still on the loose this morning after a manhunt along the texas/mexico border failed to turn up a prisoner. the jail break from the federal prison in mexico occurred under the cloak of night, early friday morning. authorities suspect prison employees had a hand in the escape. u.s. border patrol agents were told many of the escaped convicts could try to cross the border and come into the u.s. the jail is only a couple miles from the texas border and the prison warden and other prison workers are now under investigation. in that case. tomorrow 24-year-old casey anthony will appear in court as she faces charges of murdering her own daughter caylee and as kerry sanders reports new evidence has been released including documents that shed light on anthony's state of

mind. >> reporter: for the last 26 months casey's life has consisted of back and forth trips to court, otherwise she spends 23 hours every day in a solitary cell. one hour a day she's allowed out to exercise. newly released evidence reveals, she spent much of her time writing, in letters casey writes, i was a great mom and i loved my daughter with everything that i have. i would give my life to have her back even for five minutes. the letters are highly personal. casey revealed a year after caylee was born she had a miscarriage and talks about being a single mother. my situation about living at home staying home all day and going out at night looking for mr. right i don't know one single mom who doesn't try to get their freedom regardless of how old they are. it took 31 days before casey revealed under pressure by her mother that caylee was missing. photos revealed at the same time casey was out partying.

on the 2011 xf. elected officials in washington are ending the year with a flurry of activities on critical national issues. for moreless turn to nbc bay area political analyst larry gurston, tax cuts, don't ask don't tell, all this debated on capitol hill. why so much activity as they're prepared to go home. >> the senate is meeting today as well. why? >> should work this hard all year. >> i think they do, but we just don't see it the way we're seeing it right now. why are all the things crashing at the same time. three reasons. first the economy, look that tax cut package came about because of the slow economic recovery. we're moving along but not fast enough. president obama cut a deal with republicans, the democrats screamed but, in fact, they

didn't have the votes. move on to the second one. second reason, the end of the business year so to speak, and with all the stuff that congress has, they've got to clean it up. it gets down to this point. led to consideration of don't ask, don't tell. we had the vote that closed off debate. the vote on the dream act they were not able to close off debate so that dies. still to come, will be a vote on the s.t.a.r.t. treaty, that very significant treaty with the russians to reduce nuclear weapons. third reason, changes in the makeup of congress. look, let's face facts with the changing of the guard in january, democrats want to get all they can right now while they have those majorities in both houses. everything gets tougher for them next year and they know it. let's act now. >> what about the huge budget bill, $1.3 trillion to fund all those programs, where are we there? >> to keep the lights on, that kind of stuff? >> yeah. got lost in the cracks. we have to remember any important vote in the senate

requires those 60 votes to end the day. the democrats don't have it. even now while their majority is larger than it will be in january, republicans on the other hand have rallied around the earmarks as a symbol of wasted spending, even though these earmarks most of them, many of them at least, were authored by republicans. kind of funny how that changes sometimes. let's remember something, earmarks we all talk about earmarks. they amount to .3% of the budget. what's the deal here? it's a symbolic statement, a symbolic statement and we know the importance of symbolism in politics. so, you know, here we go. one other thing as far as the big $1.3 trillion spending bill the best we can do is get perhaps a two-month, 60 day continuing resolution, we call this a cr in technical terms, feel important, and that will mean that the republicans will have that majority in the house and they'll have much more say on how that budget is spend come

january. you know, the rules are changing quickly. >> whonce they take the oath of office and see the changing of hands in congress what do you expect to see after that? >> a lot less. look, let's remember, this has been the most active congress of the last two years in a recent memory, perhaps you have to go back 30, 40 years. health care, banking reform, credit card regulation, the economic recovery act, so much more. people tend to forget about that. this has been a very active congress because the democrats had all the ducks lined up. now the republicans come in and that republican majority in the house is going to slow down the pace considerably. people who like this will refer to congress as deliberate. people who don't, will say congress once again is in gridlock. take your trick -- pick, whatever you like, but the fact of the matter is, whatever comes out of congress over the next two years it's going to be deliberate, it's going to be brief, and it's what everybody thinking about 2012. >> yes, that all-important.

all right. parents let's see if this sounds familiar to you. baby blankets, teaching your little ones wrong or right and letting them go out into the wild. one kenyan woman has done that more than 130 times with babies who are just a bit bit bigger than yours were at that age. nbc's maria ma new nose spent time with a family in nairobi, kenya. >> it's 6:00 a.m. and 3 week old whatseen is waking up. nearby 18 other sleepy orphans are in need of a stretch, a push and even a morning cuddle. >> come on. >> reporter: their keepers guide them every step of the way. for over 30 years the david shelledic trust has been rescuing baby elephants like

these. and they're teaching them what their moms would have taught them had they not been victims of poechg like alari. before rescued he wept by his dying mother's side for hours. those traumatic memories are one of the reasons keepers stay with the elephants 24 hours a day and sleep with them at night and feed them every three hours. >> they all have different characters. some are playful, naughty, calm, shy. >> how did you figure out to use a blanket. >> reporter: dame daphne has spent the last 50 years living with and learning from orphaned african elephants as the species is threatened by human conflict and ivory poaching. >> all that we know has come from her. she developed how to give them the care they need. >> reporter: she is the widow of famed conservationist david

shelledrick they raised orphans with their own children, but this has become her life''s work. >> there wasn't this big research team. it was you. >> none of the zoos could help us. they never ever have been able to raise an infant elephant themselves. >> reporter: a world renowned expert she has raised 130 elephants into adulthood and released them into the wild. but it's not been without heartbreak. she says one of the first orphans she raised from infancy, died from grief when daphne took a brief trip. >> i made that mistake. so, that was -- you learn the hard way. >> reporter: ever since the keepers rotate each night so no baby grows too attached. the work has always been a part of the family with the help of daughters jill and angela. >> for daphne, when you see the elephants grown, huge herd there, and she can stand back and say, but for i, it's a good feeling. >> you have to love them because

an elephant can read your heart. >> reporter: turns out the biggest lesson learned elephants are as human as the rest of us. and that was maria reporting. what lauky girl. let's get a look at our forecast with nick o'kelly. >> good sunlds morning to you. i'm meteorologist nick o'kelly. a very active weather pattern, not just for us in the bay area, but all across the west coast. you can see couple culprits, pinwheeling area of low pressure diving south out of the gulf of alaska has a lot of cold air with it and when a system is this large it doesn't move very quickly. it's going to keep us in an active weather pattern. speaking of active weather the jet stream racing across the pacific at almost 200 miles pera hour and like a fire hose it is aimed at the bay area here for the next 12 to 24 hours we're looking wet and unsettled.

winds are going to be in the range of 15 to 25 miles per hour with slightly higher gusts in th higher terrain ave 1,000 feet. no wind advisories posted yet but we'll keep you abreast of any changes. the sierra has been pounded by a series of storm systems andve we'll continue to see the snow and rain pile up in the next several days. because the series of weather systems will rotate through the jet stream and pound the bay and central and northern california. how much rainfall, that is a big question. most spots in the higher terrain at the santa cruz and mountain range saw between two and three and a half inches with the last round of heavier weather. this time around we're looking between an inch and two inches for places like benloman and around bonny dune, the santa cruz mountains getting the bulk of this moisture through the santa clara valley more like an inch, inch and a half through the day today and into tomorrow. now there could be some isolated thundershowers embedded in this

system as well. just unstable enough we may hear the rumble of thunder at times today. temperatures will be in the mid 50s through. 55 pacific, 57 san jose, 57 san francisco, and again, maybe the flash of lightning and the rumble of thunder at times out there today with those isolated thundershowers. here's a look at the extended forecast and as we take a peek at temperatures they're not really going to go anywhere for the next several days. highs will remain mainly in the mid 50s. monday, possibly a few breaks in the overcast for a peek of sunshine but you can see that we're unsettled through with more wet weather tuesday and wednesday, possibly a break towards the end of the week. at this point could be another heavy rainstorm coming our way for next saturday. >> for a lot of people the holidays just aren't complete without tamales and true to tradition nbc bay area's public affairs show is holding a tamale tasting contest.
