hello and welcome, we're in wine country and i'm mary babbitt.you may dream of wine country living, but what about actually living in a winery? we're off to woodside,ca lifornia, in the santa cruz mountains wine country.that's where we found a one hundred year old stone structure that was once a cellar for a working wiinery there.on our open house tour, how this unique building was transforme d into a one of kind wine country retreat.this building was originally a wine cellar for la questa vineyard which was the grapes were planted in 18-83.in 19-02 construction began on the la questa cellar on a hill in woodside...it was completed in 1909 and then it stayed a wine cellar until the winery was sold in 1945 and in 1949 it was purchased and made into a home.this former winery is now home to suzie mcbaine and her husband pat -- the

third owners to live here. so much so that suzie and her husband pat shouldered an enormous three year restoration ...completely gutting the interior. architect jim caldwell's goal was preserving the integrity of the original building.this was the main entrance to the winery and so we thought it was really important to reestablish that as the front door of the house. what wasn't already old was made to look old.the steelwork you can see that connects the timbers we left that out in uh the rain for at least four or five months to get it nice and weathered and um rusted.you'll find those same weathered connection plates on old oak beams in the living room.we didn't need them stucturally but we wanted to create some interest in this high space.while salvadged beams can be pricy... there are recycled timbers as well so that are much less expensive than oak beams you can sandblast them you can distress them.the biggest phase of the restoration was shoring up the stone walls
3:33 pm
against earthquakes.this is the original stone wall and it was totally it's totally unreinforced we actually um sprayed on concrete onto the steel cage and so we ended up with about an 8 inch concrete wall.new interior walls gave interior designer suzanne tucker a blank canvas.we were trying to create an aged feeling to the house we didn't want you to walk in and say oh what a lovely new home.one way to get that look..."age" the walls.these are plaster walls and they are venetian plaster and they're called marmarino and what they have in them is marble dust, grounded marble dust.suzanne says you can achieve the same effect at home without splurging on the expensive plaster.take an under coat of a soft creamy color for example a yellow to get a richer color like that and some cheese cloth and you can simply sponge it on take it off use some cheesecloth that will take off the pigment
3:34 pm
and you can achieve this sort of effect. a key element in suzanne's designs for this winery home...balancing proportion and scale, especially in rooms with high ceilings.that meant adding a tall fireplace where none existed before.that carries your eye up along with the bookcases but then your eye comes back down and you notice the furniture the elements around so it's important to have that almost up and down effect.suzanne loves it when owners can personalize the home she helps decorate...like adding this confessional door that was an antique hunt find. but if i went back there and you opened...ok you ready to confess? there you go... forgive me suzie for i have sinned.and suzie easily established a theme for the home...everything became flora and fauna inside we've got cats we've got dogs we've got birds up in the rafters, they're everywhere.and it
3:35 pm
doesn't stop inside....a huge snail and five geese and two deer and a turtle fountain and a frog fountain and some piggies in the front.and this is benvenuta our friendly mare, to greet everybody.in preserving the former la questa winery, a unique home carries on its heritage.it truly is enchanting it's magical it's whimsical it's serene.it was worth all the time and effort it's given us great joy. in the sonoma county wine country, one couple did something most of us only aspire to. they built their own home on a large ranch, complete with vineyard views. as our open house tour continues, how their favorite wine country destinations inspired their dream home.we try to go to europe every other year and shop a little bitjim and ann van noy love europe... especially the wine
3:36 pm
countrywe've always traveled to wine country, whether its germany, rhine, or tuscany, or provence, or the champagne region um just because we've always been so interested in wine so much so, ann and jim uprooted their lives in los angeles and moved to wine country...not europe, but california.the climate and the landscape of the countryside of sonoma county is so much like umbria that you can actually like close your eyes and project that you're in umbria when you're actually in sonoma and vice versa.the van noys bought an old ranch in healdsburg with a six acre private lake.they planted a vineyard and built their dream home here, combining everything they loved about europe. one of the things we didn't want was just a typical replica kind of house. instead of a brand spankin' new american mansion, the van noys wanted their house to look like an old european hilltop home, right down to the ivy covered walls.we said you know lets grow ivy up the walls.. people said that it's
3:37 pm
going to look it's going to ruin the stucco. fine let it grow up the stucco. i said i want the look. hinged wooden shutters framing the windows... the shutters are actually working shutters which is surprising in the united states but you see them virtually everywhere in europe. and earth colored stucco... that took three layers to get just right.we were very concerned about building a home here that would fit the landscape and uh we actually picked dirt samples and rock samples and started to mix the color pallette for the houseyou'll find traces of europe inside the van noy home, as well, like the arched hallways and cathedral ceilings.we wanted to bring some of that back to california.the counters are french limestone.ann says she is inspired by ones she saw in european farm houses. we stayed at some fabulous spots in tuscany and saw that there are always these triangular shaped hoods that um the

italians use over the top of their fireplaces...so we tried to recreate that here.the van noys have an eye for detail because they are professional graphic designers. i'm liking this one an awful lot. the van noys now run the business from home, commuting just up a flight of stairs... into what they kiddingly call "the west wing.location just isn't as important. there's no reason to be in an inner city when you can live in paradise and still maintain a good business. and paradise it is. out fishing on his private lake, surrounded by his own vineyard, jim doesn't have to imagine himself vacationing in europe...his wine country reality is even better...as dreams go, the van noys reeled in a big one. next in wine country, living

nestled in the hills south of san jose, california. this wine country retreat is surrounded by wineries...and vineyards.on our next open house tour, a pairing of resort and vineyard living. how was golfing?pat and rebecca guerra always dreamed of living in a vineyard.. but they thought they'd have to change careers to make it happen.when we originally dreamed of living in wine country we always envisioned we'd have to take care of the vines.. and that we'd have to turn into...farmers basically" instead, the guerra's got their dream, a home surrounded by vines...without moving to napa valley and without ever getting their hands dirty. they're part of a unique development just south of san jose in the tiny town of san

martin -- called corde valle vineyard estates. it's a wine country experience that's quite close to uh silicon valley.. we're just 11 miles south of san josehere, huge, luxury homes on 3 acre lots are surrounded by vistas of lakes, mountains and of course...vines. the guerra's look out on merlot vines growing in their front yard. the vines are owned, maintained and harvested by the nearby clos la chance winery. they come, they take care of our vines we get the ambiance of living in wine country but they basically maintain them and take care of them for us and then do the work. we get the benefit of drinking a wonderful glass of wine when all is said and done. we have a special wine club that is set up by clos la chance for our wine owners so they get a couple bottles of wine every month or two and enjoy the fruits of their labor. if you have the money, and we're talking upwards of 2 million dollars... this is wine country living in grand style.the architecture takes its cues from the great

viticultural regions around the world, so homes you would see in the south of france, or andalucia or napa valley are at home herethe guerra's home may look like old normandy, but it's full of modern conveniences.. like the large kitchen with it's wolfe range and granite countertops.having these great islands with the granite and large expanses for cooking surface and preparation was something i really loved.when you entertain everyone is always in the kitchen right? they are all gathered around and i feel like i can be in the middle of my guests and still be doing what i want to be doing which is preparing their food.after the kitchen, rebecca's favorite room is the bathroom.this is my decompression room...i can enjoy a very calm soak in the tub and i'm still sitting in the midst of my vineyard here the best part is you can also drink a glass of wine while you're sitting here soaking.
3:45 pm
the homes at cordevalle embrace an indoor-outdoor lifestyle.most afternoons you'll find the guerra's taking in the view from their patio.it's just so beautiful to to sit out with wine and look at the lake and enjoy the vineyard which is right next to us.it is so serene yet you're so...yet with the physical proximity of the bay area means you can still be involved with all the business pursuits but enjoy the uh, the serenity of living in a resort. for pat and rebecca a day at the spa or on the links is just down the street at the 5 star resort of corde valle. homeowners have access to the private golf course and country club run by auberge resorts.i don't know of another place where you can live on a lake, surrounded by vineyards, surrounded by your own private reserve of uh permanent open space with a world class 5-star resort at your doorstep. it's resort living without the baggage."

valley wine country, one vintner created a home in the vineyards for enjoying indoor- outdoor living.but, the sky was not the limit when it came to funds.on this open house tour, how design savvy kept this home on budget without sacrificing comfort or style. this is our vineyard, we grow merlot grapes here, i am the grower, i'm responsible for my 20 acres of vineyard.darcie and david kent planted their dream vineyard in 19-91. darcie kent wine was born shortly after... but darcie says there was still something missing... that was always our dream was to have our house among our vineyard.we wanted this home to look like it was built at the turn of the century and during that period spanish eclectic was very popular.spanish eclectic is the perfect description of the 75-hundred square foot home. along the way the kents learned a few money saving

tips... like an alternative to expensive pine or oak flooring. the hardwood floor is a madrone hardwood, it is a ca native wood and it's only oiled, we don't do anything else to it, there's no varnish to it, it um we just maintain it with water once a week and then about once a month we add oil to it. and so you never have to finish a madrone wood. that's great. nope, and it's very hard, it doesn't scratch very easy.look up to the ceiling for another low cost tip. inexpensive fir planks was used on the hallway ceiling, giving character to a normally plain space.i like how, instead of beams, you've done planks over there.it's very inexpensive, it's as cheap as just putting dry wall up on the ceiling, it is the same cost, with installation, absolutely the same cost another way the kent's stretched their dollar was using inexpensive field stone tiles through most of the house and then splurging on mosaic tiles in small but key areas, such as room transitions, to draw the eye, making a big impact.darcie is

father gave me the word for monkey which is scimmia so it's become "villa scimmia"the name is italian, which mirrors the tuscan villa feeling of the home... during our open house tour, owner judith profeta taught me how to play a little italian bocce ball on her backyard court. i'm going to try and knock you out of the way does it bother you if someone talks when you're doing it (just as judie rolls) not at all, oooh,. whoa! one point for me alright, so you won that round.uh huh. well done it may be all fun and games now, but remodeling was a different story. it was supposed to last just five months, but quickly turned into an extended 27 month labor of love.we took all the floors down because we discovered there was no foundation and uh completely unleveled floors, and you know, as we opened up one thing, we kept having to open up another thing and then
3:54 pm
another thing and the next thing when judith wants something done right, there's no stopping her, especially when it came to a one-of-a- kind monkey armoire she purchased.we had to take the frame, part of the frame off, cut some of the legs and put them back on. we had to take the door frame out.judith doesn't take full credit for the creative interior of the house. she had lots of help from carmel interior designer mary ann carrigg. mary ann believes lighting is the key ingredient to focus on when decorating your home.to me it's an art form and i think everything in the room should be about art as well as function and how you live in the home. so, i do a lot of lighting. and i try to find very unusual pieces pieces like these kathleen cade designer lamps. they're made from vintage fabrics and antique bases. also unusual is this rolling bed tray.i said judie, this is for you.
3:55 pm
let me show you how this works and so i showed it to her and i said you can sit, you can have your laptop computer on here, you can have your wonderful champagne in the morning, it didn't take long to convince her. mary ann says having stories for and knowing the pieces in your home is a great way to entertain friends. you see their eyes traveling around the room and thinking oh, where did that come from and so it helps in the conversation as well.it also helps when you have as much fun decorating as a 'barrel of monkeys.'i call this home my sophisticated whimsy, i just think it's fabulous and it's romantic and every room that you go into, you just want to, i want to crawl in that bed me tooyeah, absolutely proof that wine country living can be a barrel full of fun it's really delicious, mom.
