looking to about 58 degrees and a big weather make or the way for us tomorrow. first a check of the commute with mike. >> good morning and thank you. you are talking about the fog. the low visibility in the north bay. the golden gate bridge, you will see why the fog is coming across. santa rosa and novato. a nice drive into the city. the bay bridge with the toll plaza. that shot blocked by low clouds in between san francisco and the bay bridge itself. we have a fog advisory, but no major issues. the light volume of traffic. hopefully a light flow, but we will see. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. employers could be sued if they refewed to hire blacks or latinos due to bad credit history or a criminal record. the equal opportunity employment agency sued a company for hiring

based on credit history information. the lawyers say background creeks can wrongly exclude a large percentage of applicants. last week's lawsuit is part of a controversial stepped up effort to eliminate that. >> a former dog walker is changed with stealing a client's jewelry and appear in a county courtroom. the 32-year-old from san mateo is charged with stealing jewelry worth more than $5500. he was a dog walkner october and november of last year. he clients gave him keys so he could walk the dog. they say he stole jewelry on several occasions. he remains in jail on $500,000 bail. beginning the first week of january, san francisco residents can start recycling christmas trees. city leaders will kickoff the curbside recycling program where which trees will be thrown into

a chipper machine. when the trees are chipped, they will be shipped to a west energy folt serve a new purpose as biomass fuel. today's demonstration takes place at the civic center plaza at 11:00 a.m. you may have noticed more company in your holiday road trip. more drivers are hitting the road and shelling out more for gas. according to aaa, gas prices have hit their highest points in more than two years. in oakland the average price is 3.31. in san francisco, 3.37. ? san jose it's 3.32. nearly 2/3 of the cost of gas is as a result of the cost of crude oil. >> gift cards are as popular as ever. most of you have at least one, but there things you need to know before you toss them in your purse or wallet. today in the bay's marla tellez is working on the story. good morning. >> good morning, laura.

the number one thing to remember is use it or lose it. many people don't. in fact $30 billion worth never get used. thanks to the credit card reform, there new rules that actually help us, the consumer. first of all, the cards must face fees and limitations on the cards. take a look at that, usually printed on the back of the card. secondly, longer expiration periods. the money on your card be good for at least five years from the date the card is performed. if your card does have an expiration date, you can still use unspent money left on the card after the card expires. no limit on inactive fees. lastly the card can be used online. what if you get a gift card to a store you really don't like? here are ideas to make the most of it. you can sell it for cash. swap it out with someone who

team in the last game of the season, sunday at home against the cardinals. we posted the news on our facebook page as soon as we heard from raj mathai. we would love to hear what you think about it. post your comments on your facebook page. who knows. we may read it live on air. a number of people in the bay area could end up calling in sick because they can't get back from their christmas vacations. a huge storm has blanketed the northeast, stranding thousands of airline, train, and bus passengers. live pictures from la guardia. more delays are expected today because of blizzard warnings from new jersey to maine on the east coast. airlines say they are working on rebooking passengers and considering adding extra flights when things eventually clear up. in atlanta where delta airlines has a hub, more than 850 flights are canceled. it's not the heavy snow caution the delays, but the gusting wind

that made it difficult to deice the plane. delta said they are expected to get back on track by this afternoon or tuesday morning at the very latest. we are keeping an eye on flights all over the u.s. this is flight explorer and shows a map of all over the country. most of it is green because it's the start of the day and could change as the morning goes on this morning. the storm that causes delays blanketed new york city. take a look at the video. a rare sight. time scare dusted in snow. pretty quiet. before the cars start moving and they come alive although it rarely sleeps. parts of new york and new jersey are expected to hit 12 to 20 inches of snow by today. >> the snow in philly does something had hasn't done. it caused the eagles to postpone until sides. had to be the first game since 1946. clean up is under way and they are trying to get rid of several

inches so the vikings and eagles can play. when they do, you can see it live here on nbc bay area. game time is at 5:00 p.m. closer to home, the clean up continues in one of the areas hardest hit by storms in southern california. bulldozers and work crews will be out trying to clean up. 140 homes were evacuated last week because they were below an unstable bluff. at least 26 of those homes suffered extensive damage. the city estimates at least $17 million in damage so far. storm damage in southern california is expected to top $60 million. this is what it looks like in the sierra this morning. this is a look at i-80 in truckee. not snowing now, but it's supposed to be back again. looks like a back up there. we checked with cal trans and as it stands now, 80 and 50 are open as long as you have chains. we looked at squaw valley's

website and received about nine inches of snow at the top and they are expected to open this morning. good powder to ski on there. it is now 5:08 and time to check the morning commute. >> we will touch on the live shot and interstate 80 at truckee is closed or stopped and the word was that all freeways are open. they have the chain requirements. i will check and let you know if we can get the update. we are looking at crossing the bay. at the toll plaza, there is a disabled vehicle and the lanes are open as far as remaining lanes. or the san mateo bridge. i will check on the siary for the folks at home. >> christina has a look at the forecast. >> good morning. it's a chilly start for a monday. a back to work and back to school monday. temperatures, you will need to bring a jacket or a sweater, but nothing too heavy. upper 50s today.

tina marie has died. she was known for lover girl and fire and desire. the protege of rick james. they did not mention a cause of death. the police said she died of natural causes. she was 54 years old. new this morning, nato said another service member was killed in southern afghanistan. all we know is that the service member was kill immediate a roadside bombing. 697 nato service members have died in 2010. that makes this the deadliest year of the nearly 10-year war. >> things continued to get worse on the korean peninsula. south korea's president vowed a relentless retaliation against the north if provoked again. the south is not afraid of war with the communist north. earlier the north promised to use nuclear weapons if necessary. the battle over the alaska seat

continued and he will plead his case with the judge today and he will not stand in the way of gop rival lisa murcowski being declared the winner. he said integrity of the process is vital, however he said even if the case is not decided, miller can be sworn in so that alaska has full representation on capitol hill. facebook is number when it comes to privately social media companies. the site has an enterprise value of $41 billion. officials figure the company is worth more than ebay or yahoo with the value shooting up 56% since the middle of the year. new york security firms set out to estimate the worth of facebook and is similar companies by using data from individual and institutional investors. most of the companies have not launched ipos, allowing

rising up to about 55 degrees by noon in fremont and ending up at 58 degrees today in san jose. lots of sunshine and the full forecast and a big winter storm coming up. thanks a lot. death panels sparked a political storm in 2009. they are panels that assist people with planning how to end their lives and they are about to take effect in the new year. today in the bay's marla tellez joins us now with how the obama administration plans to regulate them as of january 1st and what all of this means for you. >> good morning to you, brent and good morning at home. republican sarah palin actually referred to the plan as obama's death panels, referring and saying it would lead our nation towards government-sponsored euthanasia. democrats dropped it from the health care overhaul, but come january 1st, president obama will achieve the same goal through a medicare regulation.

under the new policy, the government will pay doctors who advise patients on options for end of life care, including how aggressively a patient wishes to be treated if they are so sick that they can't make health care decisions for themselves. the new rule said medicare will cover voluntary advanced care planning as part of an annual visit. supporters say it gives poem more control over the care they receive. opponents receive to the death panel and talk of euthanasia. an interesting note to take into consideration. it does not mention advanced care planning, but through the regulation-writing process and a tweak here or there, the president has got then through. it will take effect january 1st. reporting live from the satellite center, marla tellez, today in the bay. >> when it comes to holiday driving, the numbers are good.

chp is reporting that death due to dui are way down. between friday and sunday, there were three people killed by drunk drivers across california. that's down from the 12 killed last year. in the bay area, there were no fatal duis this weekend and when it comes to dui reafts, 507 drivers were arrested compared to 552 last year. that's also state-wide. 85 impaired drivers were arrested compared to 53 last year. >> per a battle is brewing between aspect ok police compared to city leaders. the police officer's association passed out flyers, showing the faces and contact information for five antioch councilmembers and the city manager saying they are responsible for layoffs. the city leaders defend the layoffs saying that the union is unwilling to compromise and force the move. starting january 1st, antioch is bound by contract to give officers pay raises. will the raises will cost the

the eastern seaboard and the thing that causes travel delays. we are keeping an eye on that. time now is 5:41. many people on the east coast wish they had another day off because of the storm. >> from new england to the deep south, it was a white christmas. right in the middle of the snow zone in washington, d.c., ironically avoided a big hit. >> here's a shocker. it's like the eye of a hurricane where it's not raining. this is like the eye of the storm where it's not snowing. all up and down the eastern seaboard up to boston to georgia and new england and beyond, we are seeing massive snow. look at the nation's capital. nothing here. lots of snow north of us. in philadelphia they had to cancel the eagles and vikings game because of the snow. in new york they talked about the airport delays and it's a big deal and so are the roads as they try to dig out of what is

much more than a foot in some areas. some areas got well over a foot and a half of snow. here's the shocker. the carolinas, southern virginia and even as far down as atlanta got snow. the first white christmas in 100 years. this was a really, really big storm. we skirted the eastern side of that storm and got a moderate dusting here in the d.c. area, but nothing like what our neighbors to the north and south saw. the big story today is going to be the airport delays. hundreds of flights that were canceled yesterday, we are expecting more today and starting to back up through the system. you will feel that on the west coast too. kim berly is here to talk about the local delays you may see as a result of the big east coast storm. >> thank you, tracy. so far, so good. the same is true for san jose,

san francisco experiencing problems already this morning. 20 inbound flights canceled. they don't expect flies to return to normal until at least tomorrow. that's because while we are get ag i reprieve from mother nature, the east coast has not fared as well. that is affecting travelers across the country and of course here as well. oakland international and san jose are affected since the airports don't have as many direct flights to the east coast. travelers are facing frustrations. you can expect all bay area airports to be busy as people start heading home. we talked to one mother and daughter who were delayed and just excited to find out they got rebooked on the same flight. >> they should book me center here to cleveland and cleveland

to newark. you are going out too? yea! we got lucky. >> airlines are contacting performs in advance to let them know about canceled flights, but it is a good idea to call and check online before heading to the airport. let's check in with christina to see how the northeast is faring. they will have to dig out of the mess. >> they are still under a blizzard warning, not because of the fact that it's still snowing heavily in the area, buzz because of the fact that they have gusty winds. that will kick up all the powder and driving conditions are very dangerous. time square believe it or not that you are looking at. the noreaster is pushing off to the northeast. if you head through the next couple of days, the snow showers deteriorate and this will be over the atlantic. the good news is it's getting better, but it will take a couple of days to big out of the heavy snow.

>> it's 5:45 right now. good morning. >> we will get to traffic and weather in less than two minutes, but men face terror charges in a british courtroom. british police arrested them last week and accused of them of plotting to set off explosives. it started on october 21st and didn't finish until they were arrested. they were released without changes. another package bomb was found in rome this morning at the greek embassy this time. that came three days after mail bombs did already explode in two other embassies in rome, injuring two people. heightened security helped them keep people safe. the building was evacuate and italian police are investigating. mail bombs accident exploded for chile and switzerland on friday and a group tied to greek anarchists claimed responsibility. >> the federal government's top

officials will upgrade against terror attacks. a new "usa today" investigation said there gaping holes in the plan that may be impossible to fix. "usa today's" report said the holes in security leave travelers more vulnerable. when compared to air travel, six terrorist plots aimed at the subway and rail systems have been exposed since 9/11. transit authority and security experts agree. the tsa has largely left rail to local governments. 5:47. a 14-minute drive towards the dublin interchange. 14 minutes and if you are heading eastbound, early this morning through the central valley. earlier shots of interstate 80 that is moving again.
